  • Message from General Co-Chairs

It is our great pleasure to welcome friends and colleagues to Malaysia to join us for the International Conference on Ubiquitous Information Management and Communication (ICUIMC) on prospective information technology, 2012. We are very fortunate to have so many talented and well recognized people involved in the process of submitting papers, chairing sessions, reviewing papers, and organizing the conference. We also feel grateful for the great support from international and domestic collaborations. What makes us so happy is a large number of high-quality submissions to the conference. This was attributed to the very strong conference committee that worked so hard to make the conference advertisement reach so many people in the world. Even though the submission deadline is over, they still worked very hard with their committee members to turn around a very high standard review that led to the strong conference program. All are significant contributions which lead to the success of the conference this year. We are very proud of the conference program we have and assure you that you will find it very interesting, informative, and inspiring. In addition to the conference sessions, we have two high-profile keynote speakers. We invite you to attend and communicate with the keynote speakers as they are all distinguished in their fields. In addition, you can have a chance to relax and recharge your batteries for your research here at Kuala Lumpur. The city is notable with the remarkable cultural diversity. Ethnic Malays, Chinese prospectors, Indian migrants and British colonials all helped carve the city out of the virgin jungle, and each group has left its indelible mark on the capital. Eating, shopping and nightlife are undeniable highlights to anyone visiting this city. Besides, there are numerous parks and monuments dotted around the city that are waiting for you to discover. We believe you will gain an impressive and unforgettable memory here. Again, we would like to express our sincere appreciation for the committee members’ and referees’ contributions to help us prepare the event. We thank the Program Committee and the Committee Chairs for their hard work and support. We must also thank all authors for the papers on their precious achievements. We have no doubt of the successful ACM ICUIMC 2012, and we hope you will enjoy both the research excellence during the sessions and recreational content at the beautiful landscapes of Kuala Lumpur. Lastly, We hope that your stay in Malaysia will be a pleasant and memorable one.

Welcome to the 6th International Conference on Ubiquitous Information Management and Communication (ICUIMC) 2012. This year the conference is held in Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia, a city is dominated by the tallest skyscrapers in Southeast Asia and flushed with the proceeds of international trade and commerce. The ACM ICUIMC 2012 aims to provide a forum promoting new visionary approaches and interdisciplinary researches. The conference explores emerging interests and novel ideas in the area of information management, communication technologies and their implications for social interaction. This has also served as one of the most essential platforms for researchers and developers to exchange innovative ideas, information and significant research achievements; and provides a unique opportunity in which both technology and social science meet. Two main tracks for information processing management and communication will be held, covering both research and application works of information management, intelligent information processing, interaction management, networking/telecommunications, and social interaction. The conference includes two outstanding keynote speeches, 14 oral sessions, and three poster sessions. This year's program is extremely strong, and the review process was very competitive and rigorous. We received 456 submissions from many countries around the world. As a result of a careful review process, we selected 131 papers to be presented in the oral and poster sessions (28% acceptance rate). All of accepted papers not only provide novel ideas, new results, work in progress, and state-of-the-art techniques, but also stimulate future research activities in the area of information management and communication technologies. We are grateful to all of the authors, reviewers, and members of the program committee for their considerable efforts and contributions. Handling of submission and review of papers could not have been completed without their helps and cooperation. We also appreciate the enthusiastic effort by session chairs who accept our request to manage sessions of the conference. Beyond Ubiquitous Computing: The HoneyBee Ensemble Computing Environment Since the 1980s, computing environment has moved from a centralized environment into a distributed computing environment. The distributed computing environment has also moves from one phase to another. In the 1980s, this distributed environment was provided in the form of a client-server computing, followed by the Internet computing in the 1990s. The wide availability of mobile devices together with wireless network has changed the computing environment into mobile computing and later into pervasive or ubiquitous computing environment. In 2008, European Union Interlink WG1 task group has proposed that the next wave of computing environment should be the ensemble computing in order to answer four major research challenges in the current computing environment. These challenges are (i) massive number of nodes in a system, (ii) open environment, (iii) non-deterministic environment, and (iv) adaptation. In an ensemble computing environment, computing devices can communicate and work together to complete a certain task based on peer-to-peer protocol and supporting services. The advantages of this environment can be summarized as follows: ad hoc interaction, fluidity, transience and scalability. There are two models of ensemble computing: a swarm of bats or a bee-hive. In this paper we will describe our proposed model of an ensemble environment known as the HoneyBee environment. The discussion in this talk is divided into four main issues. The first issue is about the ensemble computing in general followed by a discussion on the formal model of HoneyBee environment. Some possible applications (two issues) within the HoneyBee environment will be described next. The fourth issue is concerning Agent Oriented Programming, which is considered to be the most suitable software development approach for this type of computing environment.

Sajal K. Das University Distinguished Scholar Professor Director, Center for Research in Wireless Mobility and Networking (CReWMaN) Department of Computer Science and Engineering The University of Texas at Arlington, USA

Cyber-Physical and Networked Sensor Systems: Challenges and Opportunities Rapid advancements in embedded systems, sensors and wireless communication technologies have led to the development of cyber-physical systems, pervasive computing and smart environments with important applications such as smart grids, sustainability, health care and security. Wireless sensor networks play significant role in building such systems as they can effectively act as the human-physical interface with the digital world through sensing, communication, computing and control or actuation. However, the inherent characteristics of wireless sensor networks, typified by resource constraints, high degree of uncertainty, heterogeneity and distributed control pose significant challenges in ubiquitous information management. After introducing the basic challenges, opportunities and applications, this talk will present a novel framework for multi-modal context recognition from sensor streaming data, context-aware data fusion, and situation-aware decision making with a trade-off between information accuracy (inference quality) and energy consumption. The underlying approach is based on dynamic Bayesian and probabilistic models, machine learning, information theoretic reasoning, and game theory. The talk will be concluded with open research issues and future directions.

  • Travel Information – About Malaysia & Kuala Lumpur -

    | About Malaysia |

Malaysia, is a federal constitutional monarchy in Southeast Asia. A bustling melting pot of races and religions where Malays, Indians, Chinese and many other ethnic groups live together in peace and harmony. Multiculturalism has not only made Malaysia a gastronomical paradise, it has also made Malaysia home to hundreds of colorful festivals. It's no wonder that we love celebrating and socializing. As a people, Malaysians are very laid back, warm and friendly. Geographically, Malaysia is as diverse as its culture. Malaysia is divided into 13 states and 3 Federal Territories, separated by the South China Sea with 11 states and 2 federal territories (Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya) in Peninsular Malaysia and two states and 1 federal territory (Labuan) in East Malaysia. One of Malaysia's key attractions is its extreme contrasts. Towering skyscrapers look down upon wooden houses built on stilts, and five-star hotels sit several meters away from ancient reefs. Cool hideaways are found in the highlands that roll down to warm, sandy beaches and rich, humid mangroves.

    | About Kuala Lumpur | Kuala Lumpur, which is the capital of Malaysia, function as the center of Malaysia's political, commercial and social life. It is a city of delightful contrast - a combination of modern cosmopolitan, sophistication and lingering old world charm; a juxtaposition of gracious colonial edifices, pre-war shop houses and gleaming copper domed roofs against a backdrop of towering skyscrapers. Narrow streets of quaint old shop houses open out to wide-open tree-lined avenues. The favorable climate accounts for the lush greenery and profusion of tropical blooms in a riot of colors - a truly fitting background for its happy mix of multi-racial populace of Malays, Chinese, Indians and other races. The end result is unique blend of age-old customs and traditions: colorful festivals, songs and dances and a rich variety of foods to tempt the palate. Experience the multi-faceted fascinations of Malaysia - right here in Kuala Lumpur.

    | Banking Service | The easiest and most secure method of getting your currency in Malaysia is no different than almost anywhere in the world. ATM's are located at the major bank branches, most shopping malls, airports, bus terminals, etc. As normal, a 4 digit PIN is required, so if your password has more digits, change it before you depart on your trip. Most banks works from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm on weekdays, and are not available on Saturday and Sunday.

    | Credit Card | Credit cards are widely accepted. Use credit cards for hotel deposits or payments or purchases in department shops. Use an ATM for topping up your cash. | Currency | The currency unit is the Malaysia Ringgit (MYR or RM) which is divided into 100 sen: Bills: 1 MYR; 2 MYR; 5 MYR; 10 MYR; 20 MYR; 50MYR; 100 MYR; 500 MYR; 1000 MYR. Coins: 1 sen; 5 sen; 10 sen; 20 sen; 50 sen; 1 MYR.

Kuala Lumpur usually has heavy sunshine during the mornings lasting till the afternoons, while the evenings may see rain and occasional thunderstorms.
