PARABLE of theTWO Winged Church

"There once was created a church with twowings.

One wing was for large group celebration andthe other wing was for small groupcommunity.

Using both wings the church was able to fly

high and nigh into the presence of God andto soar gracefully all over the earth fulfillingthe purpose of the Creator.




One day the jealous wicked serpent, who hadno wings, challenged the church to fly withonly its large-group-wing. The serpentapplauded loudly when the church becameairborne (though it was a clumsy effort) andconvinced the church that with practice itcould fly just as well using only that onewing. Deceived from that day, the two-winged-church began to see itself ashaving only one wing.




(This happened during the earthly reign ofConstantine, which was only three hundredyears after the Creator had used the two-winged-church to thwart the plans of thewicked serpent who had no wings.) Thesmall-group-wing became weaker andweaker from lack of exercise until itatrophied into a lifeless and uselessappendage beside the oversized large-group-wing.




The two-winged-church that had glided highin the heavens was now one-winged, littlebetter than the wicked serpent who had nowings. The Creator of the church was verysad. He knew that the two-winged designhad allowed the church to soar in theheavens into His presence and do hisbidding on earth.




With only one wing the church was forced totry even harder to just lift off of theground. Even if it managed to becomeairborne it was prone to fly aimlessly incircles, unable to travel any distance fromits original point of departure. Spendingmore and more time in the safety andcomfort of its bird house, it grew fat, lazyand contented with an earth boundexistence.




From time to time the church rememberedthat it had once flown with two wings anddreamed that it could do so again. But nowthe strong large-group-wing was sodominate that it would not accept help fromthe weaker side. It was too late.




The Creator finally created a newtwo-winged-church. Once again theCreator had a church that could fly into Hispresence and soar high over all the earthfulfilling his purposes." Bill Beckham

2. Last 1700 YearsIn 312 A.D. Constantine, the first"Christian" emperor, imposed aninstitutional CATHEDRAL form upon the

church. Since that time theology haschanged from church to church, the

type of worship has been different,approaches to leadership may havevaried, but a constant in church historyover the past seventeen centuries has

been the cathedral structure.

on a special day of the week(Sunday)

does something to them(absolution or healing)

or for them (a ritual or

entertainment) "

Jesus' system (The Twelve) was designed toturn out producers and not consumers.



Why Small Groups?

In the New Testament small group, they metin homes. Contribution and productivity ishigh.



Why Small Groups?

We cannot produce New Testament fruitunless we have a New Testamentstructure. The large group structure byitself produces consumers. That is why inmost churches 80% of the people areconsumers, while the other 20% are theproducers.



Why Small Groups?

The problem is the large group system - it isan information system. And transformationis difficult in a large group system.

Small groups, however, offer a transformationsystem. In small groups people can

become contributors, and not justconsumers.

In prison, one of theharshest of punishments

is solitary confinement.

confinement.
