Dear Colleagues and Friends:

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you, your family and staff to the American College of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons 29th Annual Scientifi c Conference and Exhibition. Once again, the scientifi c committee has prepared an outstanding scientifi c and social program. I am pleased to see you in Kansas City!

The Scientifi c Chairman for this groundbreaking meeting is Dr. M. Franklin Dolwick. He, along with the Committee on Continuing Education, developed a fascinating program that includes lectures on endoscopic subcondylar fracture treatment, minimally invasive orthognathic surgery, risk assessment management of periodontal defects after third molar surgery and more! As in years past, an unparalleled faculty of nationally and internationally esteemed speakers will bring you the latest information on this broad array of cutting-edge topics. Thanks to our all-under-one-roof format, you need not miss a moment of the program.

In addition to the scientifi c program, Dr. Ray White will be awarded the 2008 W. Harry Archer Award and will give the Kurt H. Thoma Memorial Lecture. Dr. White is an experienced clinical researcher and currently serves as principal investigator of a series of clinical trials, designed to fi ll gaps in our knowledge of third molar treatment.

Your offi ce personnel are sure to benefi t from our professional and allied staff program assembled by Dr. Martin Dunn. The two days of lectures will encompass the review of systems and how it relates to these employees.

It has been my long-held belief that the ACOMS Annual Meeting is a unique and worthwhile experience, not just because of the magnifi cent quality of the material presented, but also because of the intimate, collegial atmosphere that we strive to promote. This year’s meeting is an opportunity to meet new members of the specialty, renew old friendships and welcome the residents of numerous training programs to the world of oral and maxillofacial surgery.

We are fortunate to have chosen this year to visit The City of Fountains, Kansas City, where the multi-billion dollar urban redevelopment program has resulted in breathtaking art, entertainment and retail venues.

Thank you for taking a few days out of your busy schedule to enrich your practice and your friendships at the ACOMS 29th Annual Meeting. I look forward to sharing an exciting and rewarding conference with you this year and for many years to come.

Sincerely,

Steven A. Guttenberg, DDS, MDPresident, American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons

Sincerely,

In the past 10 years, minimally invasive endoscopic techniques have been applied for the correction of soft tissue and skeletal craniomaxillofacial deformities and diseases of the salivary glands in the fi eld of OMS. The benefi ts of endoscopic procedures include small and remotely placed incisions and scars. The surgeon has the advantage of direct visualization of an illuminated and magnifi ed operative fi eld. Minimal dissection and manipulation of the tissues results in decreased pain and swelling, less overall morbidity and quicker recovery. Cost savings occur because of decreased operating room utilization and shorter hospital stay.
