Acoustic Terms & Definitions
Absorption: The conversion of sound energyto heat energy. It varies with the frequencyand angle of incidence of the sound thatstrikes acoustic material. A “soft room” is aspace with highly absorbent surfaces whereasa “hard room” has surfaces of low absorbentvalue and are therefore highly reflective andreverberant.
Air-borne sound: Sound that travels throughair rather than through structure.
Air Gap: For effective absorption of sound en-ergy, the sound wave should pass through theabsorbent material during its maximum ve-locity (quarter-wavelength). The speed ofsound is zero when it meets a rigid barriersuch as the backing wall of a sound absorb-ing material. Increasing the thickness of thesound absorber or providing an air gap be-tween the absorber and wall will improve ab-sorption.
Broadband sound: A spectrum of sound con-sisting of a large number of frequencies, noneof which is dominant.
Critical distance: The distance from a soundsource at which the energy of direct soundand reverberant sound are equal.
Decibel (dB): The measurement term used todefine sound intensity. A 10 times increase insound intensity is defined as a Bel (namedafter Alexander Graham Bell); 4 Bels repre-sent a 10,000 times increase in sound inten-sity. A decibel is 1/10th a Bel; 40 dB equal 4Bels. A 1dB change in sound intensity is justnoticeable; most humans can distinguish a3dB change and consider a 10dB change astwice or half loud.
Diffraction: The change in direction of soundresulting from a discontinuity of a boundary(say, an open door).
Diffusion: A means to distribute sound en-ergy in equally probable directions.
Echo: A return of sound that is perceived as adiscrete sound.
Flanking transmission: The transmission ofsound by an unintended path.
Frequency: The number of back and forth vi-brations of air molecules (cycles) that occurin a second; expressed as Hertz (Hz). Some-times known as pitch.
Hearing: The ability of the human ear totranslate changes from ambient atmosphericpressure caused by sound energy into a sig-nal recognizable by the brain. Sensitivity tosound depends upon its frequency and en-ergy. The audible range of frequency for hu-mans is 20Hz to 20,000Hz, provided that atleast 0 dB of sound intensity (the thresholdof hearing) is present.
In phase: Sound waves that reach their peakcompressions (and rarefactions) at the sametime.
Insulation: The ability of material to preventsound from reaching a location either by re-flection back to the sound source or byacoustic resistance.
Inverse-square law: Sound intensity (soundenergy per unit of area) varies inversely withthe square of the distance from its source.Sound intensity decreases 6 dB for each dou-bling of the distance from its source.
Noise: Unwanted sound having no utilitywhich may be airborne or structure-borne.Like a pollutant, noise needs to be limitedand controlled to diminish its negative physi-ological, psychological, behavioral and cogni-tive affects.
Noise reduction coefficient (NRC): The arith-metical average, expressed as a decimal tothe nearest .05, of the sound absorption coef-ficients at 250Hz, 500Hz, 1000Hz, and2000Hz.
Octave: A doubling or halving of frequency.20Hz-40Hz is considered the bottom octavein a series of even-order harmonics that ex-tend without limit beyond the audible range.
Reflection: Sound and light are reflected offsmooth surfaces in a similar manner – theangle of incidence equals the angle of reflec-tion.
Refraction: The bending of sound waves trav-elling through media that conduct sound atvarying speed.
Resonant frequency: Any object will vibrate ata particular sound frequency, its natural reso-nant frequency, when disturbed by physicalforce or by sound having frequency equal toits resonant frequency.
Reverberation: The lingering of sound in anenclosed space after the original soundsource has stopped. A room with much re-verb is said to be “live”; one without reverb issaid to be “dead”.
Reverberation time (RT60): The time, in sec-onds, that reverberant sound energy in aspace diminishes by 60dB.
Sabin: The measurement unit, in inch-pounds, of sound absorption. One squarefoot of acoustic material having a sound absorption coefficient of 1 has a Sabin value of 1.
Sabine, Wallace C.: The father of modernacoustics and the developer of the Sabine reverberation equation; RT60 = .049 sec./ft. xVolume/Absorption Surface
Sound: A vibrational disturbance comprisedof alternating compressions and rarefactionsof air molecules. The compressions push airtogether and thereby cause higher-than-nor-mal atmospheric pressure, whereas rarefac-tions spread air molecules further apartthereby causing lower-than-normal atmos-pheric pressure. Total sound energy is thepotential energy from ambient air pressureand the kinetic energy of moving air mole-cules.
Sound absorption coefficient (“alpha”): Theamount, expressed as a decimal value be-tween 0 and 1 to the nearest .05, of sound en-ergy that is absorbed, or otherwise notreflected, by an acoustic material at a speci-fied frequency.
Sound masking: The process by which the au-dibility of one sound is diminished by the in-troduction of another sound. White noiseuses equal sound energy at all frequenciesand thereby favors higher frequency spectra.Pink noise balances sound energy over a se-ries of octaves and sounds less harsh.
Sound transmission class (STC): A rating sys-tem that provides an estimate of the insula-tion ability of a partition.
Structure-borne noise: The generation of un-wanted radiated sound caused by vibrationalforces in solid materials.
Wavelength: The distance a sound wave trav-els from compression to the next compres-sion. The wavelength (or period) of sound atany frequency can be computed by dividingthe speed of sound (1087 ft./sec.) by its fre-quency. At 20Hz, the wavelength of sound is56 feet long. These long sound waves givelow frequency sound (bass) its penetratingability.
