COMPANY PROFILEAcoustica® is an Australian owned company founded in 1982 when perforated steel was a major component in soundproofing solutions. Today, the company is a global leader in the research, development and manufacture of leading technology sound control and noise abatement systems utilising visco-elastic technology.
In 1991 Acoustica® was the first to introduce polyester sound and thermal insulation materials to Australia, revolutionising the industry in overcoming health and recycling issues. This was followed by the adoption by SANIP (Sydney Airport Noise Insulation Program) of Acoustica’s residential dwelling pilot program as the specification for all dwellings included in the insulation program.
It was in 2005 when the NSW Government Industry Minister announced that Acoustica® had won the ‘Excellence in Innovation Award for Outstanding Innovation’, for the new QuietWave® plasterboard wall system. With a six star acoustic rating, QuietWave® has the highest drywall acoustic performance at half the thickness and 30Kg/m2 lighter than conventional drywall systems. Also in 2005, Acoustica was accepted into the prestigious ATS (Australian Technology Showcase) for ‘Revolutionary Technology for Acoustic Control’. The ATS is sponsored by the Australian Federal & State Governments to promote innovative Australian technology worldwide.
At the Australian Marine Industry Federation awards in 2006, Acoustica’s world patented Vybar® marine acoustic insulation was recognised with a commendation award in the ‘Innovative Product of the Year’ category.
In 2007 the Acoustica® Group was recognised in three awards. Acoustica was the winner of the innovation category of the Australian Anthill Magazine 2007 ‘Cool Company Awards’. The Federal minister for Australian Industry presented Acoustica® with the Innovation Award for the QuietWave® wall system. In the same year Acoustica® were finalists in the ‘Excellence in Innovation’ category for the ‘Western Sydney Awards’ for their new fire coating and fire rated products which was followed by the ‘NSW Pitchfest Awards’ for the QuietWave® revolutionary acoustic wall system and Vulcanite® low cost fire resistant ceramic.
The Acoustica Group in 2008 won the Engineers Australia ‘Small Business Ventures Excellence Award’ for their QuietWave® Eco Wall System. They were also finalists in the Banksia Foundation ‘Eco Innovation Award’ and the Environmental category of Innovic’s the ‘Next Big Thing Award’ for their QuietWave® Eco Wall System. In November 2008 Acoustica wins the ‘New Inventors’ Episode 42 and the ‘Peoples Choice Award’ for QuietWave® Wall System and was one of the five Grand Finalists.

AAAC 6 Star acoustic performance for impact and airborne noise
Angel Step® flooring underlay combines premium acoustic performance with minimum added floor height. Angel Step® achieves the highest possible AAAC (Association of Australian Acoustical Consultants) 6 Star rating for tile and timber flooring on a concrete substrate (test report No: 002 2007125).
The Building Code of Australia (BCA) regulates the minimum acceptable construction standard for buildings and in Clause F5.4 (a) stipulates the weighted normalised impact sound pressure level Ln,w plus the spectrum adaption term Ci. The BCA minimum impact standard for a floor in a class 2 or 3 building is to be no more than Ln,w+C1 ≤ 62. Angel Step® with an impact sound pressure level on a concrete substrate of no more than Ln,w+C1 of 40, exceeds the BCA requirements by 22 points.
Many apartment owners have become dissatisfied with the acoustic performance of buildings built to the BCA minimum impact standard of Ln,w+C1 ≤ 62, which some building industry members have interpreted as absolute rather than minimum requirements.
To address the concerns of the community and industry the AAAC introduced a star rating system to promote better standards of acoustic quality. Angel Step® acoustic underlay carries the maximum AAAC 6 Star rating compared to low end rating of 21/2 for the BCA, Ln,w+C1 ≤ 62 minimum acceptable standard, a level of amenity which many owners, occupiers and developers will find unacceptable.
Acoustic Performance
Test Results
Angel Step® test results are from Marshall Day Acoustics Report No: 002 2007125, 10 Dec 2007, with a base floor construction as follows:
The base floor/ ceiling construction, as shown in diagram, is considered to be representative of the performance of a typical masonry floor system that could be installed in an apartment that is required to achieve compliance with the impact sound insulation ratings detailed in the 2007 version of the Building Code of Australia; ie, Ln,w+C1 ≤ 62.A timber or tiling floor installed with Angel Step® 48P achieves an Ln,w+C1 40 6 star performance with a floor/ceiling construction as per figure.

Acousticaʼs EchoSorb® 25 and EchoSorb® HD 12 are both designed to combat noise in the medium to low frequency region.
Low frequency noise can be particularly irritating and stressful. Low frequency sound can be caused by traffic and aircraft noise, industrial noise, such as pumps, fans and boilers, and noise from amplified music. Sometimes low frequency noise can cause structural vibration and set up rattling.
ECHOSORB® 25EchoSorb® 25 sheet consists of 25 mm thick high density polyester, with a density of 300 kg/m³ and provides excellent sound absorption in medium to low frequencies.
Hang EchoSorb® 25 as a baffle, or glue to ceilings or walls. The hard surface can be painted, covered by fabric or simply left as is. As EchoSorb® 25 is water resistant it is suitable for outdoor use as a sound absorber for machinery such as air-conditioning units.
Echosorb® 25 comes in sheets of 1200 x 1200 x 25 mm.
ECHOSORB® HD 12
EchoSorb® 12 sheet consists of 12 mm thick high density polyester and with a density of 240 kg/m³ and, like 25, provides excellent sound absorption in medium to low frequencies.
While having slightly lower absorption qualities than EchoSorb® 25, EchoSorb® HD 12 is ideal for applications where space is a concern. Typical applications include work-station partitioning and free standing panels covered with fabric. For sound absorption that saves space Acoustica® recommends EchoSorb® HD 12.
Echosorb® HD 12 is available in sheets of 1200 x 1200 x 12 mm.

‘HELM HOLTZ’ BLOCK ABSORBER INSERTSCombining High Frequency & Low Frequency Absorption
Acoustica® ‘Helm Holtz’ Block Absorber Inserts combine excellent acoustic absorption and sound transmission loss capabilities.
While other walling materials reflect noise , adding to the original noise source, Acoustica® ‘Helm Holtz’ Block Absorber Inserts control both low and high frequency noise, combining acoustic performance with attractive and aesthetic design.
Acoustica® ‘Helm Holtz’ Block Absorber Inserts are used for a wide range of industrial and commercial acoustic applications, including theatres, auditoriums, cinemas, churches, radio and television stations, schools, factories, workshops, plant rooms, indoor sports centres, shopping centres and anywhere where reverberated noise is a problem.
When high frequency noise is to be absorbed, specially designed inserts are placed within the ‘Helm Holtz’ cells (Fig 1), allowing the absorption of sound across a range of frequencies.
Acoustica® ‘Helm Holtz’ Block Absorber Inserts are compatible
with Series 150 bond beams and part size blocks.
Acoustica® ‘Helm Holtz’ Block Absorber Inserts combine the high transmission loss benefits usually associated with a dense, non-porous material (such as a concrete block) with excellent sound absorption capabilities.

The Kliptex® frame system includes a hinged track to eliminate the possibility of damage to the fabric during installation and removal.
The unique locking mechanism ensures high tension of the fabric and eliminates the possibility of sagging.
Fabrics can be cleaned in-situ like any other upholstery products. Alternatively, fabrics can be easily un-clipped and removed for cleaning, redecorating or cycling of seasonal or themed printed fabrics.
The Kliptex® acoustic substrate will not flatten or twist and supports the hanging of wall art and other light objects. Additional design elements such as shadow lines and lighting can be incorporated. The ‘tackable’ substrate can be used as a pin-board in meeting rooms to mount charts and other printed material,
The on-site installation of the Kliptex® overcomes problems of prefabricated panels. Perfect alignment with adjacent architectural features and fittings is assured by the customised installation by factory trained personnel.

MARINE FLOATING FLOOR
For Sound & Vibration DampingAcoustica’s Patented Marine Floating Floor System controls noise transmission, by damping the highly resonant steel or aluminium floor structure and removing energy from the resonant vibration.
The Floating Floor System combines three layers of “viscoelastic” damping membranes combined with a needle punched sound absorber and two layers of marine ply that in combination offer the following advantages.
• The “Captive viscoelastic” vibration damping layer laminated between the two layers of marine ply, together with the first layer of damping material ‘floating’ over the resilient sound absorber are designed to absorb vibrations generated into the ply wood panels.
• The high-density (160 kg/m3) resilient double needle punched polyester matting act as a very efficient sound absorber as well as a vibration isolator.
• The “viscoelastic” vibration damping membrane in contact with the steel floor effectively dissipates the vibrational energy. The level of damping can be augmented, to increase energy dissipation in particular vibration modes. In this way, the response of a structure driven at a resonant frequency can be greatly decreased. This in turn can significantly reduce overall motion or acceleration of a system or product.
• The marine ply offers an excellent base to accept any type of finished flooring material.

REFLECTA-RANGE™ The Reflecta-Range™ (= Reflecta-Cell and Reflecta-Guard) provide a radiant and conductive barrier reflecting heat out in summer and reflecting heat back in winter. The Reflecta-Range™ has a patented coating to stop oxidization and corrosion due to condensation in metal and tile roofs providing for a long term ‘R-Value’. (Unlike some Aluminium foils, which react and dull when exposed to oxygen, reducing the reflectivity and eventually the ‘R-Value’ to 80% or more).
✓ Reflecta-Range™ surfaces with adjoining airspaces are powerful radiation barriers, reflecting up to 97% and emitting 3% of all radiant heat
✓ The Reflecta-Range™ ‘R-Values’ are the highest in the industry under a roof (up to R3.3 under metal roofs and R2.9 under tile roofs)
✓ The Reflecta-Range™ has been tested and certified as suitable for acoustic insulation
✓ ‘R-Values’ do not decrease due to effects of moisture, compression or temperatures above 30o
✓ Reflecta-Range™ rolls are 1500mm wide, saving up to 12% in material and 10% in labour costs
To save energy and help contribute to further reducing national greenhouse emissions, houses need to be insulated with a maximum use of reflective insulations, which would eliminate daytime summer radiation without stored heat (Fibreglass, Rockwool and other insulation store and later release the heat!) Reflecta-Range™ uses up to 15% recycled products, meaning a reduction in greenhouse gases. Demand is greater than ever for energy efficient insulation to conserve heating and cooling energy with easy installation. It is the foil that does the summer insulating, (not the fiberglass), and Reflecta-Range™ with a double-sided aluminium foil (99+% pure aluminium) insulates best with the dominant working foil surface facing downwards. Houses using foil insulations combined with natural ventilation can avoid air-conditioning.
✓ Reflecta-Range™ is ideal for new construction or retrofit installation, and is rated for commercial, industrial & residential buildings
✓ Reflecta-Range™ is an Acoustic, moisture and thermal barrier achieving the highest ‘R-Value’ under a roof. Combining the advantages of three products-in-one
✓ Reflecta-Range™ is very strong. With double sided woven scrim, it will support 2 tonnes every metre that the product is attached (it is much more tear resistant than competitive products)
✓ Suitable for use in walls, roofs, ceilings and under floors
✓ Reflecta-Range™ has a patented Anti-Slip component in its coating for added safety for installers
✓ Reflecta-Range™ addresses up to 93% of heat that enters a building
✓ No known allergenic impacts. Vermin are not attracted to eat, nor nest in the product

SONEX® ANECHOIC WEDGE SOUND ABSORBERAcoustica® offers a range of sound absorption foams for use in sound and broadcast studios, community facilities, commercial buildings and for industrial machinery
Sonex® Anechoic Wedge sound absorber consists of a contoured profile which traps airborne noise and dissipates it by absorbing the kinetic energy created by sound waves. With a surface area up to four times that of a flat surface, Sonex® collects noise from all angles, deflecting and directing it deep into the acoustic foam.
Sonex® employs a double-pronged attack on noise that no other material can beat
1. The patented shape of Sonex® (based on the same anechoic wedge principle used in major acoustic laboratories) presents a surface area up to 400% greater than flat surface materials. That means Sonex® collects noise from all angles, deflecting & directing it deep into the base of the acoustic foam.
2. The superior structure of Sonex® helps dissipate the captured sound energy within its millions of tiny air pockets.
Another critical measure of an absorber’s performance is its ability to control low frequency sound. Most absorbers do a good job of handling noise above 500 Hertz (Hz), however many acoustic problems occur at frequencies below 500 Hz. For these problems, the conventional wisdom is the thicker the acoustic material, the better it controls low frequency noise.’ That’s why Sonex® comes in a variety of thickness', from 25 mm – 150 mm to match the frequency of your noise source.

VISCO-ELASTIC DAMPING PADSevere vibration can cause failure of equipment components and a perception in the consumer that products that radiate noise or rattle excessively are of a poor quality.
One of the most effective and widely used methods for noise and vibration control is passive damping. Acoustica’s ‘Visco-elastic’ damping pad reduces the noise level caused by dynamic instabilities, or resonances, in a structure which is caused by excitation.
The damping pad is used to isolate vibration, absorb shocks and control noise by isolating mechanised devices from adjoining sheet metal and lightweight panel surfaces. The ‘Visco-elastic’ material dissipates the vibrating energy as heat, rather than radiating it as acoustic energy or noise.
Typical applications for the Acoustica® Damping Pad include vehicle doors, trucks and buses, whitegoods, speakers, business and medical equipment enclosures, computer cases and materials handling systems.
Acoustica® has developed a range of ‘Viscoelastic” Damping Pads from 1.5 kg/m² to 13 kg/m² which achieve different decay rates when attached to different gage materials. These dampening pads are effective over a wide frequency range of < 50 to 5,000 Hz
