We, the Alberta Cultural Society of the Deaf, would like to wish you all a wonderful new year! We hope the time we all spent looking back at 2017 and celebrating with our close family and friends help recharge our energy for 2018! Sometimes it is hard to believe how much things can change and stay the same over the years. As we look back at 2017 we would not be where we are if it were not for our hard working and dedicated volunteers and staff. We would like to thank and appreciate our numerous donors, volunteers, and administration team for all of their past, current, and future successes. Due to their efforts, we have several exciting events and training opportunities we would like to announce.
With our drive to develop Deaf awareness, we partnered with the Edmonton Eskimos to provide official Canadian anthem signers at every Eskimos home game. This experience is truly enjoyed by the Signers and an honor offered to recognized members of ACSD for their continued support of our community. We appreciate the signers for their beautiful display of O’ Canada in ASL.
We are excited to be invited to participate in the University of Calgary’s Diversity Week with a 3 hour showcase of Deaf Culture. Volunteers are working with the organizer to set up an exhibition of Deaf produced short films focusing on our unique experiences. This is a wonderful opportunity to bring awareness to the next generation and bringing positive impact to how individuals in Society sees the Deaf and how we can benefit each other through understanding our unique cultures. We have chosen Audism Unveiled (Dawn SignPress) and several hard-hitting talks posted on TEDxGallaudet on the topic of Deaf Gain.
ACSD places great value on preservation of our culture and our language. This comes with supporting our community with continued learning opportunities about ASL. We have 2 training seminars on Semantics coming up this spring. We are thrilled to have Christine Spinks give a workshop in Edmonton on March 2nd and Angela Stratiy, in partnership with ASLIA, will be providing a training seminar in May, to be announced in the spring newsletter.

We are proud to bring a unique event to Alberta. Joanne Cripps, CCSD’s Executive Director, will present on DeVIA, Deaf View Image Art. DeVIA represents the expression of the Deaf experience in life, struggles, successful victories, and our unique view on the world we live in. This is a rare opportunity to discover an emerging art category that can help us realize our raw experiences and ways to express it through countless kinds of art forms. Art could be painting, crocheting, sculpting, quilting, electronic media, performance, or any form of creativity used to express an idea, emotion or viewpoint. Check out the flyer on her talk in Edmonton on April 14, 2018.
We are proud to continue our signature ASL awareness and training seminar “ASL Immersion”. Our ASL Immersion director, Shauna Durston, is working hard on organizing our 2018 ASL Immersion events in Edmonton and Calgary. We recognize the original creation of ASL Immersion by the Manitoba Cultural Society of the Deaf. Please view the flyers attached for further information.
We have our next Board of Directors meeting in Edmonton on February 24th, 2018.
This meeting is open to the public. Come check out our meeting of ideas, enjoy some refreshments, and talk about how we can make our community grow and prosper!
We have an updated ACSD membership form with revised registration fee information. Membership gives the ability to vote and propose ideas to the organization and costs only $15. Please see the flyer for more information.

The Canadian Cultural Society of the Deaf (CCSD) is pleased to announce a successful 18-month project titled: Unlocking Culture; Connecting Communities funded in part by the Government of Canada's Social Development Partnerships Program(SDPP) – Disability Component’. This project, spearheaded by CCSD, sought out 40 Sign Language instructors to participate in Unlocking Culture: Linking Communities (“Unlocking Culture”). Unlocking Culture aims to increase ASL and LSQ literacy levels and quality of instruction by applying the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) standard to the ASL and LSQ teaching process in Canada. For more information, please contact [email protected].
Don’t forget to come to our office and buy some great tasting DefT tea canisters or bags to support the Deaf Culture Centre’s social enterprise. All sales out of our office goes to DCC in support of their hard work in bringing Deaf Canada together.
Here’s to a wonderful start to 2018!
Sign your heart out,

Edmonton Eskimos 2017
Anthem Singer / Interpreters At Commonwealth Stadium
This Edmonton Eskimos Season 2017, these volunteers were chosen to sign the Canadian National Anthem at all home games here in Edmonton, along with interpreters. It was great public awareness for the Eskimo fans to see the signers using our beautiful ASL. I thank all the signers and interpreters for their contributions this year.
National Anthem Signers and Interpreters: Yasmiin Hassan (ASD Student) with Colleen Mason
Emil Kvarnberg with Alicia Ponicano Bonny Milliken with Laura Patterson
Gwendolyn Lathe with Helen McLeod Anita Mazzuca with Laura Patterson
Brenda Hillcox with Megan Richelhoff Dena Ruiter-Koopmans with Diane DeAndrade
Nancy Lynn Dillon with Helen McLeod Shauna Durston with Alicia Ponciano
Crystal Wolfe with Carla Durpas
Those National Anthem Signers were selected based on criteria including: their participation in ASL workshops and trainings, and their ongoing willingness to volunteer and help with ACSD events. ACSD was also able to form a great community partnership with ASD to have one student sign at one of the games. Lastly, I would like to thank Edmonton Eskimos for having our signers and interpreters to perform O'Canada in ASL. Thank you all again, we look forward to continuing this program in the season 2018. See you next year, Sandra Reid
