Description: Current research in regenerative medicine and stem cell advancements for sports injuries and osteoarthritis.

Bio:

I treat people with acute sports injuries as well as non-sports injuries, and I manage injuries that occur in most parts of the body. I choose treatments based on strong evidence of long-term outcomes, and I’m conservative in my approach. In other words, I start with the least amount of intervention that gives the most positive results, and I move forward with additional treatment if necessary.

In addition to seeing patients at NYU Langone, I serve as the head team physician for the athletic programs at NYU and Long Island University, the chief medical officer for the New York City Public Schools Athletic League, and as a team physician for the U.S. Open tennis tournament.

Title: Assessing Physiological Readiness for Pregnancy and Postpartum

Description: Childbirth is called "labor" for a reason - it's hard work! When expectant moms stick to light resistance and cardio as their main sources of physical preparation for delivery and motherhood, they are shortchanging themselves. Not only do you want to minimize risk to your pregnant clients but you also want to maximize their performance during labor and their subsequent recoveries.

In order to most effectively design a pregnancy program it is imperative to understand how the body changes throughout the nine months, what it must endure during labor, and how the activities of daily living of motherhood place new stresses on a compromised body. Once you have performed a needs analysis of these three distinct, yet interrelated phases then you will be guided to the appropriate assessments to test for your clients' readiness. These assessments will form the basis of their programs, providing your ladies with the best preparation possible for their big day.

Bio:

After I spent most of my childhood and adolescence smacking balls on a tennis court I decided to channel that athletic passion into a career helping others improve their movement competency. In so doing, I discovered how important those physical tools were to developing the strength and confidence necessary for my clients to pursue their passions.

During my six years at a gym in my hometown of New York City I helped clients experience joyful days of sprinting on the tennis court, negotiating a marathon course, scrambling after grandchildren in the park, kicking butt in the delivery room, digging in the garden, and even scaling the Great Wall of China.

Itzik Zur, PhD

Title: The Science behind the Mind-Body Relationship in Sports: How Emotions Influence Athletic Skill Execution

Description: In this presentation, Dr. Zur discusses how emotions can impact physical performance, specifically looking at the science behind the mind-body relationship in sports. Although the industry has made significant strides in recent years toward preparing athletes, there is still room for growth, particularly when preparing athletes to manage and process emotion in competitive spaces. Dr. Zur’s call to action is to recognize the importance and power of emotion on physical activity. He argues that it is our first and basic form of communication and that we need to acknowledge its impact on every element of our lives, including sports.

Bio:

Dr. Itzik Zur’s Ph.D. research focused on how emotions, specifically anger, can affect fine motor performance, response-time and accuracy. Dr. Zur conducted the research with two international authorities on emotions and sport performance; Professor Lew Hardy and Professor Tim Woodman from Bangor University, U.K. His research involved comparing various mental elements (i.e., emotions) with physiological bodily responses.

As part of his work, Dr. Zur utilizes a bio-feedback system that records EMG muscle tension and other physiological activities which has deepened his appreciation on the many factors associated with peak performance.

Dr. Zur has worked with athletes from the U.S Olympic team and U.S. Karate team, and he continues to work with athletes of all ages and skill levels. For three years, he served as a full-time Sports Psychologist for the Bney-Yehuda Soccer Club, one of the top youth academies in Tel-Aviv, and helped to train the Israeli counter terror unit. Dr. Zur has also worked with Wall Street traders and start-up teams and currently works with a private practice in New York.

Dr. Zur has a black belt in karate and in his spare time teaches karate at Saint Ann’s school in Brooklyn (when he is not playing soccer with his local team).

Title: Reinventing the Wheel: Fitness for the Autism Population

Description: 31% of adolescents with autism are clinically obese and nearly every individual with ASD has gross motor and strength deficits. This time is now for the fitness industry to recognize this as a niche population that greatly needs service. In this presentation, Autism Fitness Founder Eric Chessen, M.S., breaks down his PAC Profile approach to Physical, Adaptive, and Cognitive functioning and how fitness professionals can provide the best outcomes for those with autism.

Bio:

I began working with the autism population about a decade ago as a summer camp counselor. Even then, prior to foreseeing my career, I was fascinated with the few children I met with Autism. While taking graduate courses towards a degree in general psychology, a classmate asked if I would be interested in applying my fitness background to a program for teenagers on

Page 9: ACSM 2017 PRESENTERS - · PDF fileACSM 2017 PRESENTERS: Dennis Cardone, DO Title: Biologics and Recovery for Athletes and Novice Exercisers Description: Current research in regenerative

the Autism Spectrum. At that time, I was unsure of what I wanted in a career. I was hired to develop and implement fitness programs for several students who, in addition to having autism, exhibited some gross motor challenges. While developing fitness programs for my students, I underwent intensive training in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). I integrated the teaching strategies from ABA with my working knowledge of exercise, and steadily began developing my own model and methods for implementing successful fitness programs for children with Autism. Around the same time, I was researching, or attempting to research the most effective fitness programs for young people on the autism spectrum. I found virtually nothing on the subject. It was at this point I realized what I wanted to do with my career; to be an advocate and resource for bringing fitness to the autism community. My career as the “autism fitness guy” grew slowly. I began working with new clients who made great progress in their physical, emotional, and cognitive health. I started writing for autism publications, speaking at various functions and workshops, and filmed my first DVD. In 2008 I changed from my company name from Theraplay-ny to Beyond Boundaries Fitness, as my goal became to bring fitness to as many children and families as possible. Paul Gallo, Ed.D.

Title: Twenty years of blood flow restricted strength training: Unprecedented hypertrophy or unfound hype

Description: In 1998, Shinohara et al. reported a 26% increase in strength after four weeks of isometric training for subjects who worked at 40% of the maximal voluntary contraction, a stimulus traditionally considered insufficient for strength gain. However, this was only the case when the exercise was performed with blood flow to the working muscle restricted by external cuff. Follow-up studies involving dynamic exercise confirmed this effect and put blood flow-restricted strength training on the “research map” with well over 200 publications on the topic to date. However, despite the obvious potential for low-load hypertrophy training for clinical populations or when other circumstances exist that prevent heavy lifting (e.g., for astronauts during space travel), at present, there is no evidence that blood flow-restricted strength training is being routinely practiced in fitness or rehabilitation facilities except in Japan where “KAATSU” has been adopted in a number of settings. The purpose of this presentation is to review 20 years of blood flow-restricted strength-training research to tease out fact from fiction.
