    Installation Process

Preparing an ACT! 3.x - 6.x Database for Conversion

Because ACT! 2008 uses a SQL Server database, you must prepare, and thenconvert the ACT! 3.x - 6.x database.

Note the following considerations, and then complete the tasks as describedonpage 7.

Once you convert an ACT! 3.x - 6.x database to an ACT! 2008 database, youcannot open the converted database in or save detail to previous versionsof ACT!.

An ACT! 2008 database has special types of fields for phone numbers, addresses, and secondary contacts. If you added custom fields of these

types in your ACT! 3.x - 6.x database, use the Custom Conversion option. This option lets you map your custom fields to the ACT! 2008 databasefields.

ACT! 3.x - 6.x databases store date and time fields as literal values (forexample, an appointment scheduled at 1:30 P.M. in Arizona displays to allusers as 1:30 P.M., regardless of a users time zone). ACT! 2008 databasesstore date and time fields as Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), so the datadisplays according to a users time zone.

Fields that are set to "Not Allow Editing" in an ACT! 6.x database convertto Read Only fields in an ACT! 2008 database.

    ACT! 3.x - 6.x Conversion Checklist

    Task

If you use passwords, record the user names and passwords for use after

    conversion.

If you have multiple databases, set all the databases to a "home" time

zone before you upgrade. You can reset the time zone for individual

    databases after conversion.

If you synchronize remote databases, synchronize all data into one

database before converting. After you install ACT! 2008, you will convert

that database, and then create new remote databases to distribute to

remote locations and users. The Help describes how to create and

    distribute new remote databases.

Delete obsolete data in the existing database. See "About database

maintenance" in the ACT! 3.x - 6.x Help.

Compress and re-index the database. See "About database

maintenance" in the ACT! 3.x - 6.x Help.
