    DAY 1CULTURALENTREPRENEUR-SHIP AND

    CoNTINENTALPERSPECTIvES //The three-day conerence, will kick-owith an exciting presentation by UKCultural Strategist, John Newbigin.During his keynote address the historyo data collection and measuremento the creative industries will beunpacked as well as how this has beensuccessully used in various countries.Representatives who will alsointerrogate cultural entrepreneurshipwill present continental perspectives.A panel comprising government

    ofcials will discuss the interactionswith the creative sector.

    During the course o the last decadethe export o South Arican creativeand cultural services to the EuropeanUnion has more than doubled. Ourexport o creative goods has howeverremained largely stagnant and weimport substantially more creativegoods and creative services thanwe export. These and other insightsorm part o an EU-unded researchproject coordinated by the Visual ArtsNetwork o South Arica, the British

    Council and Arterial Network South

    Arica, which will also be presentedon the frst day. Breakaway sessionswill conclude day one. Ownershipo content (copyright and the dividebetween developed nations and thirdworld countries), how useul the

    South Arican creative industries are(as part o public policy) and the roleand regulation o stimulating localcontent development will be debated.Delegates will then be invited to acocktail networking event, whichwill coincide with the Johann Louwexhibition preview.

    DAY 2ExPLoRINg PLACESAND SPACES //On day two, presenters will embarkon exploring places and spaces.Synergies between cities and arts andculture as well as the role o estivalsand trade airs and their economicdynamics will be interrogated. Thepresentations will ocus on trends andopportunities or cultural practitioners.During the aternoon, practicalexamples o advertising and marketingwill be under the spotlight lookingat, especially, how to improve marketpenetration and growing clients andaudiences. Delegates will then havean opportunity to attend breakawaysessions, which aims to share

    inormation regarding residencies,curating across borders (geographicaland sectoral). One o the breakawaysessions will oer development inthe areas o cultural entrepreneurshipand business acumen. Day two willconclude, setting the scene or anexciting last day, ocusing on digitalpossibilities.

    DAY 3DIgITAL ANDoNLINETECHNoLogIES //The fnal day o the conerence willoer extensive inormation regardingdigital and online technologies andhow these are breaking boundariesin an ever increasing, globalised, andinter-connected world. The digitalcreation o content, and delivery,as well as how relationships andaudiences could be expanded byutlising the vast range o onlineopportunities will be interrogated.Finally, presenters will explore how theInternet and digital spaces could beutlised or income generation.

    TRISH DowNINg(CHAIRPERSoN)Trishs career spans an unusual combination

    o an in-depth background in the arts

    and high-level corporate communications

    and marketing experience. Ater studying

    drama at UKZN and obtaining a Drama

    teaching qualifcation rom Trinity College,

    London, Trish pursued a career as an

    actress and voice artist, working extensively

    in theatre, flm, TV and radio. Trish runs

    her own Marketing & CommunicationsConsultancy, is a Council Member o the

    National Film & Video Foundation and is

    also a Trustee o the Arts & Culture Trust.

    BEv gILLESPIE(CoNTENT MANAgER)Bev Gillespie has worked with and in a

    variety o organisations: mainly (but not

    exclusively) with non-profts, including

    under and research organisations at a

    managerial level. She has also served in

    various governance positions. Recently,

    as a reelancer, she oers research,

    organisation development, acilitating

    change and mentoring services, mainly tonon-proft and civil society organisations.

    ANNALI DEMPSEYAnnali Cabano-Dempsey has been the

    arts curator or the UJ Art Gallery at the

    University o Johannesburg or the past

    fteen years. As an arts curator she is

    in charge o temporary art exhibitions as

    well as the UJ Art Collection. Annali is a

    practising artist with art works incorporated

    in public and private collections. She holds

    a Masters degree in Communications rom

    the North West University and is the Vice

    CEO or the Rendezvous Art project.

    JoSEPH gAYLARDJoseph Gaylard is a researcher, writerand arts manager, and currently serves

    as Director o the Visual Arts Network o

    South Arica (www.vansa.co.za). During the

    course o the past ten years he has led or

    provided technical assistance to a range

    o industry research and policy/strategy

    development projects across the creative

    industries, and has been an occasional

    lecturer at the WITS School o Arts.

    ANDR LE RoUxAndr le Roux is an Arts Administrator

    involved in cultural policy-making, lobbying

    and advocacy. He is currently the Managing

    Director o the SAMRO Foundation. He

    has ocused on institutional development,

    governance, strategy and policy development

    within arts broadly. Andr le Roux spent

    several years working in the arts at National,

    Provincial and local government level.

    vALMoNT LAYNEValmont Layne is a musician, curator, activist

    and arts administrator rom Cape Town

    South Arica. He completed a Masters

    Degree (MA) in History at the University

    o Cape Town ocusing on jazz, social

    dance and vernacular music in the Western

    Cape. He spent ten years at the District Six

    Museum in Cape Town where he established

    the Audio-visual Research Archives and

    its collections o music and oral histories

    rom the Cape. More recently he hasworked as a reelancer and is the Secretary

    General o Arterial Network South Arica.

    LISA PHASHALisa Phasha has been working in the arts or

    15 years. Starting out in flm and television

    with the British Film Institute, in 2000 she

    moved over to the British Council working

    on the development o international music

    programmes, based rom their ofces in

    London. Whilst there she developed a

    number o major programmes including the

    multi-award winning Selector radio show

    and pan-Arican event marking the 200th

    anniversary o the abolition o the slave trade.
