Conference programFollowing the success of the last two ACTivate conferences in 2014 and 2015, we have listened to feedback and are pleased to present an exciting program with over 70% of brand new sessions to choose from. ACTivate 2016 gives participants the opportunity to cater to their learning needs with the choice of 24 different workshops. Four sessions will be held throughout the day, with participants able to choose from one of six parallel streams per session to suit their particular curriculum focus. All sessions are interactive and cover both theoretical and practical aspects of HPE and sport. For ICT workshops, please ensure you bring along your own device, such as a laptop, iPad or Smartphone and internet connectivity. Participants will be provided with a list of apps, programs or other requirements for their relevant sessions prior to the conference.

Keynote AddressThe impact of sitting on children’s health: A movement schools can’t ignoreProfessor Jo Salmon

Professor Jo Salmon will provide the latest evidence of the impact of prolonged sitting on children’s health, and how even small increases in movement over the long term can benefit health. She will present the outcomes of a large intervention trial as well as novel pilot studies that have tested the impact of changes to primary and secondary school environments as well as teaching practices on children’s sitting and physical activity.

Alfred Deakin Professor Jo Salmon is Co-Director of the Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition, Deakin University. She holds a National Health & Medical Research Council Principal Research Fellowship, and is President of the International Society for Behavioural Nutrition and Physical Activity. She has published more than 270 peer review papers and book chapters and has been a Chief Investigator on 26 nationally-funded studies and 14 international studies. She has played a lead role in development and refinement of physical activity guidelines for children and young people in Australia. Elective Descriptions: Session A

Minor games to develop collaborative skills for middle years students

A1 A fun and practical session looking at the importance of teamwork during minor games. We investigate ways to get students moving

while developing both ball and social skills. Activities challenge students to think outside the box and work together to achieve a common outcome. Come away with practical ideas you can use in your lessons straight away.

Fitness testing - How to use fitness testing to improve student participation and motivation in all sports

A2 This session will look at how to implement fitness testing, normative data, and student goal setting with an in depth look at

how this data can inform future teaching and learning. This session will also present how this approach to fitness testing and data can help students understand fitness components (and how this connects to sport) while improving their motivation and participation in HPE lessons.

Screencast-o-matic (using as an assessment tool & for visible learning of unpacking an assessment)

A3 The focus of this session includes the relevant ICT resource screencast-o-matic for visible learning in the PDHPE Syllabus and

how this content can be incorporated into differentiating teaching strategies. Through examining this resource, and applying knowledge of teaching strategies, teachers will explore how they can develop videos that involve ‘authentic learning’ for 21st century learners. Screencast-o-matic is a handy tool for recording assessment scaffolding and sharing them with students. With just a few clicks, you can start recording your screen, and once you’re satisfied with your video, you can upload it directly to YouTube and with QR codes go from there.

SEC PE (PRAC)

New dynamic warm ups and injury prevention exercises using plyometric, landing, balance and resistance activities

A5 An interactive session that focuses on current warm up techniques used by elite athletes. The session will cover how to structure a

warm up that incorporates injury prevention exercises by using movement, landing, and balance and resistance activities to enhance the functional capabilities of students and how these can be applied in an everyday P.E. class. Participants will be given a practical resource which they can take back with them for use in the classroom.

Primary and secondary schools program: Tennis activities designed for large groups of students

A6 In this practical workshop, participants will experience a range of tennis activities specifically designed for large groups of school

students of varying abilities within a limited playing area using modified equipment. The workshop, which adopts common and complimentary aspects of the Game Sense approach, will also highlight the concepts of ‘play with purpose’ which involves guided play using questions to shape, focus and make visible player learning, the deliberate modification of task and environmental constraints to meet learning needs of the student at different stages of game development.

Introducing the Healthy Mind platter: 7 essential activities for health and wellbeing

B1 Schools are now seeing the benefit of incorporating Mindfulness practises into their curriculum and daily activity for both students

and staff. This session will introduce Dr Dan Siegel’s Healthy Mind Platter to teachers and some practical exercises that can be used with classes across all sectors of the system. The Healthy Mind Platter has seven daily essential mental activities necessary for optimum mental health. These seven daily activities make up the full set of “mental nutrients” that your brain and relationships need to function at their best. By engaging every day in each of these servings, you promote integration in your life and enable your brain to coordinate and balance its activities. This session will start you on this journey.

Appropriate scaffolds for short and extended response questioning in senior exercise/sports science

B2 ACT BSSS Moderation days regularly consider appropriate scaffolds for approaching short and extended response test

questioning in Senior Exercise Science/Sport Science. Teachers are always looking for more support in this area, especially when considering the different ability and interest levels of students undertaking these studies. Teachers often have both tertiary and accredited students in the one class for Year 11/12 and support strategies will be shared.

Thinking routines and learning improvement strategies

B4 Classrooms have routines that exist to manage student behavior and interactions, to organize learning, and to establish rules for

communication and discourse. Classrooms also have routines that structure the way students go about the process of learning. Rob will share some of the routines he has found ’work’ and ensure students remain on-task and engaged for a large percentage of the class.

Gymnastics is to sport what literacy is to reading

B5 Gymnastics Australia Launchpad Programs are all about fundamental movement! You will find that skills learnt in

gymnastics go across all sports, and are a necessary component of being able to fully participate in any sport. You will learn that the skills taught in gymnastics are indeed fundamental to enjoying a healthy life style which takes students well beyond their school years and will be used throughout their lives, with these fundamental movement patterns linked to the Australian Curriculum for Health and Physical Education. Practical information will enable you to set up and run safe gymnastics circuits in your school with the focus on maximum participation with minimal equipment.
