JA strives to empower youth to own their economic success. We know that teaching kids the key principles of work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy and then building on these principles as they grow, gives them an advantage; helping them to understanding the world around them. We know this because we witness to it every day at JA Northern Alberta & NWT.

Thanks to you, the incredible community surrounding JA, we had the privilege of engaging and inspiring over 25,000 kids in the 2016/17 school year. This was possible thanks to our wonderful network of over 600 volunteers who lend their expertise and experience throughout the school year, delivering over 980 programs to students in grade 3 through 12. Volunteers bring the ‘real world’ perspective into the classroom that helps to prepare our kids to succeed, as they explore what lies ahead.

2016/17 was an exciting year at JA; a year of growth and new opportunities. The community opened their doors to our Company Program students, providing greater accessibility to students with locations around Edmonton and surrounding areas. In partnership with NAIT, we hosted an exceptional Future Leaders Week for students in grade 7 through 9. Grande Prairie hosted our first ever World of Choices event which was a huge success and an event we hope to grow across our region.

May featured our annual Alberta Business Hall of Fame event, where we had the opportunity to celebrate and recognize three phenomenal business leaders; Dr. Herb Belcourt, Mr. Paul Douglas and Dr. Prem Singhmar. Each with an impressive list of accomplishments, our guests had the opportunity to hear about their journey through an intimate fire side chat.

IMAGINE A CANADA WHERE OUR YOUTH ARE EMPOWERED TO OWN THEIR ECONOMIC SUCCESS AND REALIZE THEIR POTENTIAL; ALL DOORS OPEN TO THEM

    TO EXPLORE.

    Message from our President

As our JA journey continues into the upcoming year, our team is excited for what lies ahead. As our world continues to evolve and change; we are as dedicated as ever to explore ways we can have an even greater impact on our communities. New partnerships and collaborations will help take JA to new heights, as we continue to inspire and prepare our kids to pursue and consider their futures.

Whether you are new to the JA family, or have been with us for a while, thank you. We could not do what we do, without your incredible generosity. We truly appreciate your partnership. Together we can give our youth the power to change their world…and ours.

    Best,

    Jen Panteluk

Job Shadow Day 2017We held our seventh annual Job Shadow Day on February 2, 2017, presented by the CPA.Returning Company Program students had the opportunity to shadow executives from Edmonton’s business community for a day; gaining valuable real-life work experience from prominent Edmonton leaders. These mentors taught JA students fundamental skills, including problem solving, time management, and relationship building.“There is nothing like meeting your student first thing in the morning – sometimes unsure of themselves, not really knowing what to expect – follow them through the day and see them grow, right before your eyes. Learning from each other. By the end of the day, they are different people, and it is rewarding to know that you have been a part of it. Job Shadow Day costs the sponsoring company practically nothing, but it has far reaching consequences for everyone involved. I highly recommend it, it’s good for the soul!”Les Kozma, C.E.T. This year, our Company Program had over 350 students participating in 24 businesses. Our Achievers worked hard to start a business, manufacture and sell products, and liquidate during the 18 – week program.

Social entrepreneurship remained a key component, where companies gave hours and monetary values to charities. Over $2,500 was donated to local organisations, including the iHuman Youth Society, Edmonton Public Library, Mustard Seed, Canadian Honey Council, Edmonton Food Bank, Ronald McDonald House and Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation.

At our 2017 Company Program Awards Night, over $24,500 in scholarships and trips were awarded to some of our top Achievers. Congratulations again to the recipients and to all of our Achievers on their hard work and dedication.

On May 3, 2017, over 800 guests came together at the Shaw Conference Centre to celebrate and honour three outstanding and inspiring businessmen as they were inducted into the Alberta Business Hall of Fame: Dr. Herb Belcourt, Philanthropist and Founder of Belcourt Construction, Paul Douglas, Chairman, PCL families of companies and Dr. Prem Singhmar, President, Singhmar Group of Companies.

Highlights We were honoured to show our team spirit by incorporating an Oilers theme into the evening to celebrate the home team being in round 2, game 5.

Junior Achievement student entrepreneurs and Company Program students showcased their products and passion for the business at always anticipated ‘CP Tradeshow’.

JA grade 3 students from Michael Strembitsky School brought the Canadian anthem to life with their rousing rendition.

JA Alumna and Board of Directors Chair, Nicole Janssen, inspired guests to invest in JA’s future with some help from our students.

JA President and CEO Jen Panteluk reflected on the work JA does, thinking of the impact programs could one day have on her young daughter.

JA Alumnus, Sam Goertz shared the impact JA programs have had on his life.

The Cervantes siblings spoke about their experiences at JA, the impact on their family and running companies.

Carrie Doll was our Master of Ceremonies and conducted a fireside chat with each of our three inductees

    Special Note:

Dr. Herb Belcourt had recently been diagnosed with stage four brain cancer when he was announced as one of our incoming 2017 Laureates. He said on many occasions that his goal was to make it to the event on May 3rd. Herb did just that and spoke at the Alberta Hall of Fame to an attentive crowd. We said goodbye to Herb on July 5, 2017, all the better for having known him.

World of ChoicesWorld of Choices, held for the very first time in Grande Prairie on March 30, 2017, gave 123 students in grades 10-12 the opportunity to join 28 local career mentors as they shared exciting aspects of their work. The program began with self-exploration where students selected the careers and mentors to network with throughout the day. After the motivational key address, students circulated through five, 20 minute roundtable sessions to interact with career mentors representing 27 different occupations. The forum was geared towards exposing students to their World of Choices while engaging in meaningful, relevant discussions to discover a myriad of career path possibilities that align with their skills, interests, and passions. Students left the forum excited about their future and better equipped to meet the challenges of today’s work world.

Future Leaders WeekDuring the last week of April, more than 3100 students visited NAIT to experience their JA programs in a post-secondary setting. Rebranded as Future Leaders Week (FLW) in 2017, the event was hosted by the JR Shaw School of Business and highlighted the personal success stories from six keynote speakers over our five days on campus. FLW has always been something to look forward to, but with help from nearly 200 volunteers and our keynotes, as well as being in the newly opened Centre for Applied Technologies, the student experience increased exponentially. With new standards set high, we’re planning FLW 2018 to be even better.

Big Pitch This year’s finalists for the Big Pitch competition were1. Infinote

    2. Memory Magnets

    3. Green Write

    4. Just Coast

    5. SNAP (wild card selection)

This year, five companies participated in the Big Pitch, which was held Saturday, April 8th in conjunction with the West Edmonton Mall Tradeshow. Our judges, Clinton Senkow (Influencive.com); Noreen Hoskins (e-Hub); Bill Fortier (CTV); Jill Miller-Barone (Telus) had a difficult decision after hearing the outstanding pitches from the companies, but ultimately decided to award the following:

    Green Write – 1st place $600

    Snap – 2nd place $300

    Infinote – 3rd place $100

Companies were required to donate 75% of their winnings to their charity of choice, and could reinvest the remaining 25% in their company.

Our VolunteersThank you to all our 2016/2017 volunteers. It is no small feat to head back into the classroom to lead our youth to be successful leaders of tomorrow. We could not have achieved a student reach of over 25,000 students without the hard work of our dedicated volunteers. In the 2016/2017 year, over 600 volunteers helped JA deliver lessons on financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship throughout northern Alberta. With all our volunteers, we want to celebrate this accomplishment; we are so grateful for the incredible support we have received from the community.

    Independent Auditor’s ReportSeptember 21, 2017 Edmonton, Alberta

To the Members of Junior Achievement of Northern Alberta and the Northwest Territories

The accompanying summary financial statements, which comprise the summary statement of financial position as at June 30, 2017, and the summary results from operations for the year then ended, are derived from the audited financial statements of Junior Achievement of Northern Alberta and the Northwest Territories for the year ended June 30, 2017. We expressed a qualified audit opinion on those financial statements in our report dated September 21, 2017.

The summary financial statements do not contain all the disclosures required by Canadian Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organizations. Reading the summary financial statements, therefore, is not a substitute for reading the audited financial statements of Junior Achievement of Northern Alberta and the Northwest Territories.

Management’s Responsibility for the Summary Financial Statements Management is responsible for the preparation of a summary of the audited financial statements on the basis described in Note 1.

Auditor’s Responsibility Our responsibility is to express an opinion on the summary financial statements based on our procedures, which were conducted in accordance with Canadian Auditing Standard (CAS) 810, “Engagements to Report on Summary Financial Statements.”

Opinion In our opinion, the summary financial statements derived from the audited financial statements of Junior Achievement of Northern Alberta and Northwest Territories for the year ended June 30, 2017 are a fair summary of those financial statements, on the basis described in Note 1. However, the summary financial statements are subject to conditions equivalent to those of the audited financial statements of Junior Achievement of Northern Alberta and Northwest Territories for the year ended June 30, 2017, upon which we issued a qualified audit opinion.

Our qualified audit opinion, as described in our report dated September 21, 2017 is based on the fact that in common with many not-for-profit organizations, the Society derives some of its revenue from sponsorships and donations, the completeness of which is not susceptible to satisfactory audit verification. Accordingly, our verification of these revenues was limited to the amount recorded in the records of the Society and we were not able to determine whether any adjustments might be necessary to partner contributions, excess of revenue over expenses, current assets, deferred contributions and net assets. Our qualified opinion states that, except for the effects of the described matter, those financial statements present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of Junior Achievement of Northern Alberta and the Northwest Territories as at June 30, 2017 and the results of its operations and its cash flow for the year then ended in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations.
