April is a jam packed month with a large focus on youth. The month started off in style with a visit from stunt squad Freestyle Now, who conducted workshops, mini jam session and bmx, scooter and skate competition in Pannawonica, Tom Price and Paraburdoo. They also provided entertainment at the eagerly anticipated Paraburdoo Skatepark Opening and Town Centre Celebration. The new skatepark has given Paraburdoo a huge boost in the provision of youth friendly spaces.

Some great youth activities are on offer through Tom Price Youth Support Association during National Youth Week 8 - 17 April including a Backyard Bash event and beat boxing sessions available to Tom Price and Paraburdoo. The Club and Capacity Development Team

NewsGive It a Go Day - Tom Price and ParaburdooThere were plenty of first experiences at the recent Give it a Go Days in Paraburdoo and Tom Price, as residents enjoyed the chance to try new activities and sample a variety of products.

In Paraburdoo eleven sporting clubs, eight community groups, four small businesses and the local police provided activities for the community on Saturday 5 March to an estimated 400 attendees. Netball hoops, soccer goals, indoor cricket, tee ball, football, dance and even knitting were popular with kids and adults, as well as the variety of product samples on offer from a range of local businesses. Kids could see inside the Police car, sound the siren, or sit on a number of motorbikes which were on display thanks to the Motocross club. The Emergency Services Siren Off made crowds gather. The Police, St John’s Ambulance and Volunteer Fire and Rescue Services each took turns at sounding their sirens, with the well timed musical backing of a local DJ. The crowd loved it.

The Tom Price Give it a Go Day was held in conjunction with the Community Markets on Saturday 19 March to create an extravaganza event for new and existing residents. Over 1100 people attended. Twenty local groups and clubs and fifteen market stalls participated; it certainly hit the mark with the Tom Price community. Local Police offered bike safety checks for riders as part of Bike Week celebrations, and a special appearance by celebrity dinosaur T-Rex wowed the kids.

Performances by the Tom Price Performing Arts group entertained the crowd in both towns, along with balloons, airbrush tattoos and bouncy castles.

Thank you to all clubs and groups who contributed their time and efforts, as well as to our event partners who helped bring the day to fruition. Give it a Go Days increased awareness of, and encouraged participation in, local sport and activity for people of all abilities. The event was made possible through a partnership between the Shire of Ashburton, Rio Tinto and the Department of Sport and Recreation. Photos by Tina Elliott Photography.

NewsBike WeekParaburdoo: On Saturday 19 March, the launch of the new bike racks coupled with a bike maintenance session at Paraburdoo Youth Centre marked bike week celebrations. Twenty youth and six adults enjoyed burgers and milkshakes as we said thank you to the Tom Price Youth Support Association through Paraburdoo Youth Centre and the Paraburdoo Men's Shed for the five artistic bike racks we have in our town centre area. The Men's Shed also coordinated a bike safety and maintenance talk and demonstration covering helmets, lights, brakes, tyres, levers, saddle, peddles, cranks and chains. The local police also provided a bike safety gift bag including a UV marker to write their name on their bike, scooter or skateboard and a handy bike safety information card.

Bike Week events were made possible by funding from Department of Transport, Westcycle, Rio Tinto and the Shire of Ashburton.

Tom Price: In an effort to encourage more students and parents to ride to school the two Tom Price Primary Schools decided to organise Bike Week events during weekdays on 15 & 16 March in conjunction with Nintirri, Rio Tinto, WA Police and the Tom Price BMX Club.

Each event had bike safety talks, bike maintenance talks from Phil Kerrison, President of the Tom Price BMX Club, bike related competitions with prizes provided by Rio Tinto and a free healthy breakfast prepared by the school P&C Association. The breakfast was funded through a $1000 grant that Nintirri secured from West Cycle.

Year 1 - 3 students at North Tom Price Primary School (NTPPS) also participated in a ride around Minha oval while year 4 - 6 students participated in an escorted bike ride in the school vicinity. Tom Price Primary School (TPPS) had a bicycle riding Police Officer at their event.

513 people including students, teachers, parents, younger siblings attended the two events. NTPPS had 187 student riders and TPPS had 182 student riders, a total of 369 student riders out of the potential 440 students or 84%. This is triple the average amount of students that generally ride to school.

The results were incredibly close, but North Tom Price Primary School had the highest percentage of student riders so won the inter school challenge. A trophy was presented to the school at assembly on 24 March. The trophy was hand made by a parent from the school, who recycled an old trophy and using bike parts salvaged from Tom Price rubbish dump.

Pannawonica: Bike Week has been a lot of fun in Pannawonica with lots of great events to promote bike sports for fun, fitness, and transport. Bike week started with Burrup Mountain Bike Club leading out on a Mountain Bike session for the children. Adults also participated in a MTB skills clinic and social ride through the beautiful Pilbara landscape.

The Pannawonica Primary School hosted a fantastic Bike Week 2016 event with kids riding to school early on their ‘blinged up’ bikes to enjoy a healthy breakfast. The local police delivered a bike safety talk, escorted several groups of children in a ride about town, and awarded several best dressed bike prizes.

The final event in town was a Bike Maintenance Skills Clinic where kids were able to undertake basic bike maintenance tasks, have their bikes set up correctly, and learnt how to repair a tube. Bike Week was enjoyed by everyone who participated.

Donations can be made until end of June, so please pledge your support to Team MVSC Tom Price at http://worldsgreatestshave.com.

Tom PricePublic Speaking WorkshopsOn the 8 March two prominent speakers in Peter and Violet Dhu presented well received workshops titled “Winning Presentation Skills” and “How To Have Difficult Conversations”.

Peter Dhu, an acclaimed speaking trainer and coach with over 20 years’ experience, shared his own inspirational story of success after his own fear of public speaking. He encouraged the attendees to move out of their comfort zone and provided keys steps to develop their presentation skills.

Violet Dhu has over fifteen years experience in helping people develop their interpersonal and communication skills. As an experienced social worker, trainer, and graduate of the Harvard Negotiation Institute, Violet has worked with many people who are dealing with difficult situations in their workplace. How To Have Difficult Conversations workshop was an intense and intimate educational experience for the attendees.

The workshops were made possible through funding from Shire of Ashburton and Rio Tinto, Nintirri Community Resource Centre and the Newman Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Ashburton ThunderOn Sunday 13 March the newly formed Tom Price and Paraburdoo women's football team Ashburton Thunder defeated Karratha Giants 4.3 - 3.5 in a women’s AFL exhibition game.

In the heat of the day, the ladies showed great sportsmanship and determination, attracting a large crowd to cheer them on.

Sara Mohammed, Helen Young and Maddie Clark were stand out players for Ashburton Thunder, whilst Katie Sherwood, Aileen Christensen and Kayla Skinner were notable mentions for the Giants. The regional tour and exhibition match was made possible by the Western Australian Football Commission.

PannawonicaParaburdooParaburdoo Women pledge to make positive personal changeThe Women of Paraburdoo got together for a glamourous cocktail evening to celebrate International Women’s Day for 2016.

The International Women’s Day event has become very popular - over 100 local women attended the night.

The attendees were treated with a glass of champagne on arrival, gift bags, raffle prizes from sponsoring local businesses and two very inspiring Guest speakers - Local Business Owner of Colours in the Pilbara, Hayley Freestone Gibbons and Gabrielle Iwanow, Rio Tinto General Manager Paraburdoo Region.

Each guest speaker shared their unique story and inspired the audience to think about how they can continue to make a difference to their own life and the lives of others around them.

Manager of the Karingal Neighbourhood Centre Joanna Wilkie said, "the 2016 International Women’s Day theme, Pledge for Parity made local Paraburdoo women think about their own personal journey. We wanted women to focus on how their individual story was powerful in its own right, and how each pledge they took to change something for themselves could make an impact to the immediate women around them and even generations of females in the future". During the event, attendees wrote a small pledge to themselves which will be posted back to them from Karingal in six months’ time. The aim is to see whether they have taken steps toward achieving their personal goals and further encourage them to follow their dreams.

The official proceedings came to a close with MC Sarah Johnston sharing a powerful phrase: “Here’s to strong women. May we know them, may we be them, and may we raise them”.

The event was made possible by volunteers, sponsors and Rio Tinto.

Youth Skills Clinics in PannawonicaOver the past 5 weeks, children in Pannawonica have had the opportunity to participate in a variety of different ‘come & try’ sessions. The aim of the skills clinics is to allow kids to try different activities, learn new skills, and possibly develop a love of a new sport. There were five different clinics and included Judo, Racquet Sports, Skipping, Bike Maintenance, and Boxing. Each clinic was well attended with over 30 children on average attending each session.

WACA visit PannawonicaThe Pannawonica Junior Sports Committee were delighted to host a visit from the Western Australian Cricket Association in support of the Milo Cricket program. Mark Sanders (Market Development Manager) and Steve Philippe (Country Cricket Manager) came with a wealth of cricket experience and expertise as well as a fantastic understanding of Youth sporting programs. They ran two skills clinics for our Junior and Senior teams and demonstrated a range of new concepts and ideas that have since been put into practice at our weekly Milo Cricket sessions. The visitors also ran an adult/coaches session at night. This was incredibly insightful and active; the adults were put through their paces much like the kids, and learnt the correct way to teach the fundamental skills of cricket. It was fantastic to see sport representation at such a high level in Pannawonica. The WACA representatives noted that Pannawonica has one of the highest registration rates per population in the state with 56 children registered and also has the highest female participation.
