Church Worker ConferenceIn early May, Vicar Peter, Stephanie and I all attended the (required) B.C. Church Workers’ Conference in Parksville. The presenters were two lay theologians from the 1517 Project in California. They addressed the topic of young adults leaving the church. Their pre-sentations were very relevant and very engaging. Syn-odical President Teuscher and Regional Pastor Mohns and Seminary President Gimbel were all in attendance and gave us updates on what is happening in the larger church.

Team Klemtu 2019!This will be our second year traveling to Klemtu, BC to “be the church” and to encourage the Christians living in this remote part of the province. The dates of July 18 to 25 have been confirmed by the elders of Klemtu and the BC Mission Boat Society, and the planning has begun. Thank you to all who contributed to the PoCo City-Wide Garage Sale and bake sale on April 27, with the proceeds supporting Team Klemtu 2019 – with thanksgiving we received over $900!

The team members are: Stephanie Mayer (lead), Jordan Mayer (BC Mission Boat rep), Loa Wilson, Bill Wilson, Selina Intile, and Deanna Hautz.

Please pray for our team now, that in our planning we will find effective ways to connect in Jesus’ love with our brothers and sisters in Klemtu.

God Revealed - Nature CampWe are REALLY excited to be offering a unique alternative for our summer children’s camp this year. Shelley Frick is going to be leading a Nature Camp at Mossom Fish Hatchery in Port Moody. The chil-dren will be bussed from the church to the Hatchery each morning, where Shelley will teach them various things about God’s creation – the creek, the fish, the forest, insects, birds, the sun – and how all these things work together. We will supplement her teaching with Bible stories based on the days of creation, and activ-ities that support the theme for each day. We are hop-ing to have the kids sing on the bus on the way to and from the Hatchery. When we return from the Hatchery, lunch will be served to any children that are staying, and afternoon options (from outside groups) will take place for any who register. The morning Nature Camp is free, and takes place from July 15 – 19, for children aged 4 - 11.

If parents choose, their children can stay for the optional lunch – at a cost of $20 for the week. There are also afternoon options for the children put on by outside individuals or groups: Sportball; Nature’s Art Camp; Critical Thinking Math & Science Camp. These three options are available at a cost of $125 / child.

Handchimes, anyone?Are you interested in being part of a handchime group? The handchimes are square tubes with a hammer on the outside – when you move the handchime, it sounds similar to a hand bell. The school has a set of hand-chimes, and Jasmine Allen, the music teacher at the school, has given us permission to use them.

It is not difficult to learn to play a handchime, and this group could include anyone from about age 10 to seniors, so it could be a family affair! You don’t need to know how to read music, although being able to count would be very helpful!

Red Letter ChallengeOne of the books / ideas that I was made aware of at the Best Practices for Ministry Conference in Febru-ary was the Red Letter Challenge, authored by Pastor Zach Zehnder from Florida. The concept deals with key words and teachings of Jesus (in red if you have a Red Letter Bible), specifically: BEING, FORGIVING, SERVING, GIVING, and GOING. We ordered books and other materials in early April to use after Easter. Books were given away to visitors (and to our own members) on Easter Sunday. Since then, I have used RLC resources for Sunday small group study and for a series of sermons. The series will conclude in June, as follows:

Many people from Hope have been reading the devotions and challenges in their own personal time with God. At least one small group is planning to use the RLC material in the fall. Please feel challenged yourself to read Jesus’ words and to put them into prac-tice in your own life.

VicarVicar Peter Knelson has another 8 weeks to spend with us. He has grown in his confidence and development toward being a future pastor. He has preached more often than normal for a vicar. He has led a Bible Study group both here at Hope and at Mt. Calvary. He has been involved in the cooperative confirmation retreats we have held with other area churches. I have tried to give him a wide variety of experiences in order to pre-pare him for being a pastor, including developing the budget for the coming year, attending a Ministry Con-ference in the U.S., observing and/or participating in a Baptism, a funeral, and Confirmation Day. We usually

spend Wednesdays and Fridays together doing sermon studies, debriefing things he has done or led, discuss-ing books I have assigned him to read, and generally talking about pastoral ministry and growth topics. Often Stephanie will join us on Friday mornings for a time of prayer. I will have one more evaluation report to fill out in July to complete my responsibility as the supervising pastor. We are planning a special day for Peter and Laurel on Sunday, July 28 (even though he is preaching at Mt. Calvary that Sunday). Watch for more details in up-coming bulletins.

Wedding!After having only one wedding in 2017, for the sec-ond year in a row it looks like I will have no weddings in 2019. However, Kaitlyn Horton and Liam Brett are being married on June 15 (by Kaitlyn’s grandfather, Pastor Ruf). Please pray for them, encourage them, bless them as they begin their journey as husband and wife.

Bible Studies / Small GroupsDuring the course of the year, we have had a number of Bible Study groups taking place. On Sunday mornings here at the church, the young adult group and Front to Back (reading the Bible from beginning to end) have been constant ways for people to engage with God’s Word. Small groups meet in homes on Monday, Tues-day, Wednesday and Thursday evenings, with almost 40 regular participants. The seniors group meets on Thursday mornings twice a month in Pitt Meadows. This past year, most of the groups have used small group materials provided by St. John’s Lutheran Church in Orange, California. Small groups will resume in the

fall, and there is always room for more people to par-ticipate. The Sanctuary Course on mental health was offered two times during the winter / spring, with over 30 people participating. It has helped to educate and inform people about issues around mental health, and will help us as a church to demonstrate compassion to those who struggle. Small Groups will resume in the fall. Please consider how and when YOU will partic-ipate!

Status of Team LeadersOur Team Leaders continue to provide various min-istries that we appreciate. The Sunday Team (led by Christine Intile and Simon Verboom) organizes the various people who volunteer during our Sunday morning worship services. Jean Gettle (the Celebration Team) has great ideas for special events to get people together (bowling, picnics, meals, etc.) The Commu-nication Team (led by Leah Wilson) looks after the church web site, communicating with both our church family and the larger community. Bill Demetrioff and the Financial Team have been instrumental in leading the church and school to a cost savings with respect to pension and benefits. (Bill is stepping aside from that responsibility.) Children’s Ministry (Jennifer Watson) is responsible for Sunday School and works with Pas-tor Laverne and Stephanie on the spring and summer camps for children. (Jennifer is also stepping aside.) The Youth Ministry Team Leader is Brenda Horton, but because Stephanie Mayer has that responsibility as part of her job description, the actual Youth Ministry is led predominantly by Stephanie. The Young Adult Team Leader is Julie Diack, with the main activities being a winter Young Adult Retreat, and reg-ular Sunday morning studies. There are currently no leaders for the Spiritual Care Team and the Facilities Team. However, Ken Youck is paid by the school as a maintenance person and has done a tremendous job in the last two years keeping the building in good work-ing order.

You might want to verbally appreciate any or all of these Team Leaders, especially if their volunteer min-istry has been a blessing to you personally.

Food Bank Fund“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat.” Matthew 25:35

We managed to come out of April with a small pos-itive balance of $54. So we continued with faith and hope into May and our first delivery on May 13. With hope and prayers we should make it through May with the second delivery scheduled for May 27. Fortunately, the cost per 1,600 lbs load has remained unchanged at $256. To cover the food bank’s needs, we are planning the first delivery on June 10 followed by the second shipment on June 24.

Above average contributions on May 12 of $195 ensure adequate funds for the May 13 delivery.

Total deliveries for 2019 up to May 12 amount to 14,400 lbs of potatoes plus 97 lbs of non-perishable food items from the narthex.

Meanwhile...In early July, Brenda Horton is leading three of our

senior youth (and three youth from other local con-gregations) to the National Youth Gathering – being hosted at Trinity Western University.

The theme of the Youth Gathering is “WORTH-LESS: There is NOTHING you are worth LESS than.” This theme was chosen in collaboration with our main session speaker, Pastor Glenn Worcester, and here are some of his thoughts on the theme:

Are we actually worthless? Well, that depends on your perspective. If you look at it from your own per-spective, there are two questions to ponder: What do you have to offer God? and What you can do to make yourself worthy before God? The answer is nothing. There is nothing you can do to make yourself worthy before God, and nothing you have to offer God that makes you valuable. The only thing you bring to the table is your sin. You cannot save yourself from that sin. So, from that perspective, you could see that, in

fact, you are worthless in God’s presence as you stand before him a poor, miserable sinner (1 Timothy 1:15).

If you look at it from God’s point of view, you will see that He created you (Psalm 139:13-14), and He redeemed you through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus paid the price for your sins on the cross, that price being His life. In the logo, you see the cross within the word “worthless,” and we’re reminded of the blood He shed for us with the use of red letter-ing. Our theme verse is Romans 5:8 because it tells you that you are not worthless “but God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” The King of Kings died for you, while you stood there in your sin, proving that “there is NOTHING you are worth less than!”
