For a better overview of the many monuments of silver-mining, a marked “mining trail” was opened in the spring of 1998, leading past the most important relics of mining and smelting. The route has two separate sections – southern and northern.

thE SoUthERn RoUtE

The southern route is suitable for families even with smaller children, and offers a view of the remnants of medieval mining. A circular route of 12 km, it begins and ends on Palackého náměstí in the historic town centre, and has 14 stopping points.

thE noRthERn RoUtE

The northern route is a medium-difficulty trail leading through the Na Vrších nature reserve, with information on the history of mining. It begins and ends at the restaurant Na Pašince on the hill of Kaňk and has 12 stopping points.

aRoUnD kUtná hoRa

A yellow-marked dirt trail leads on a 20 km circle around Kutná Hora. Starting from the rail station “Kutná Hora-město”, it passes the Church of the Holy Trinity, ascends the nearby hills, and also passes through the Na Vrších nature reserve.

BoBSLED RUn

Located in the Klimeška sports complex, the bobsled run is uniquely

positioned on three separate slopes. At 1565 m in length, it is the

longest in the Czech Republic and the second longest in Europe,

with an elevation difference of 42 m.

A single run is taken along two routes. The first route, with

a gentler slope, is 750 m, while the second, recommended for more

experienced sledders, is much steeper and only 575 m. The average

speed of the sleds is 36 km/h, though they can reach a maximum

of 58 km/h, depending on the decision of the rider. The total period

of time along the route is 7 min.

The parameters of the route have been set and determined

with the aim of making it both pleasant yet also suitably thrilling.

Other attractions in the complex are off-road quads, with a dirt track

of 300 m, a petanque lawn and a children’s playground, both

of which are free of charge.

This sports and recreation complex offers not only water attractions

but also volleyball courts, table tennis, croquet, and refreshments.

Included in the complex are a full-sized pool with water toboggan

and water slide, a “wild river” and a wading pool with water spouts.

Located in the pleasant surroundings of the Čáslav forest park, it

provides visitors with a great many sports opportunities. It contains

a track-and-field stadium with a running oval of a high-quality

surface, as well as tennis courts with adjoining changing rooms.

Recently added was a multipurpose sports field and a children’s

playground. The complex also boasts two football pitches,

one with grass and one with an artificial surface, as well as

a skateboarding area and (most recently) a field for petanque.

CLIMBInG

Though not located in a particularly mountainous region, the vicinity of Kutná Hora contains many climbing opportunities on rock-faces of gneiss and similar geological formations. One of the most famous is the group of cliffs in the valley of Vrchlice, leading from Kutná Hora to the dam below Malešov. Of the individual formations, it is worth noting the cliffs Hlavní stěna and Šimákovská stěna, with several dozen routes to the top of UIAA difficulty ratings from 2 up to 8-, primarily of a vertical character. A smaller climbing area can be found below Sion Castle, with its most difficult route rated 9-. Another traditional climber’s destination is Pašinka – the cliff above the old Kohout Mill with around twenty climb routes classified from 2 to 9-. A number of smaller rock formations with good climbs (primarily sideways) are found near the towns of Zásmuky and Doubravice. The only granite terrain is Tisí skála near Čáslav, with a short but extremely demanding climb, running from classifications 2 to 8+. There are no time limits for climbing.

A number of marked cycling routes are available through Kutná Hora and out into its surrounding countryside.Starting from Palackého náměstí in the town centre is an 8.8 km-long circular route leading to the Great Pond and back, following the blue and red trail markings.Another route from the same starting point is the marked vineyard trail, leading from the town centre to the Pod Sukovem vineyard and back. The route is 7 km.From the park below the Vlašský dvůr, a much longer (25 km) circular route follows the red trail markings up to the ruined castle of Sion. From the castle, continue in the direction of the village of Chlístovice along asphalt roads following cycling route 0096 to Malešov; from here, follow cycling route 0106 through Poličany back to Kutná Hora.Another possibility is a 33 km circular route from the town centre along cycling route102, leading through Sedlec to Malín and Nové Dvory. Over the hill of Kamajka and through the village of Chotusice, you arrive in Žehušice. The return trip follows cycling route 0113 through Rohozec to the chateau of Kačina. From here, cycling route 0128 leads back to Nové Dvory and thus to Kutná Hora.Another circle of 20 km leads from the centre of town along the red-marked dirt trail to cycling route 1, towards the village of Mezholezy and the viewing tower of Vysoká, returning through Karlov in the direction of Nová Lhota – still following route 1 – around the Vrchlice reservoir. Return to Kutná Hora by the red-marked trail.
