To the teacher: Objective: To reinforce reading comprehension, vocabulary building, and critical thinking by using novels in the classroom.

About the Choice Board: This ready-made literature choice board is ideal for use with any novel used in the 3rd-5th grade classroom. The board is derived from the multiple intelligences (which are listed at the bottom of each choice). The board is designed to allow teachers the flexibility to have the students complete three activities in a tic-tac-toe style, or to complete all nine activities.

Materials: Other materials that will be needed to complete the activities on the choice board are: dictionaries, drawing or construction paper, colored pencils, index cards, old magazines, glue, photocopies of a page from the novel, watercolor paints (optional), paint brushes (optional), and cups of water (optional).

Literature Activity Choice BoardNovel________________________________

Vocabulary: Pick 7 words from the reading passage that you were unfamiliar with. Look up these words in the dictionary, and write their definitions. Then write a sentence using each word. (Use “Novel Vocabulary” worksheet.)

MI: LI

Artist: Draw or paint a picture of one of the scenes in the chapter or one of the main characters. On an index card, write a 5 sentence explanation of the scene or a 5 sentence description of the character.

Alphabet Soup: Use the “Novel Alphabet Soup”worksheet and fill in at least 12 words or phrases about the book in the appropriate letter box.

MI: LI, LO

Collage: Use magazines to cut out at least 7 pictures that remind you of the book. Paste them onto a piece of construction paper. Label each picture.

MI: V, K

Grammar: Take a copied page from the book and color code the following things: Nouns (blue), verbs (red), adjectives(yellow), and adverbs (green).

MI: V, LI

Poem: Write a poem (at least 12 lines long) describing either a character in the story or a scene in the chapter.

MI: M, LIPrediction: Write one paragraph (6-7 sentences) telling what you think will happen in the next chapter.

Character Match Up: Use the “CharacterMatch Up” worksheet to compare andcontrast two of the main characters in the book.

MI: LO

Comic Strip: Draw and color at least 6 frames of a comic strip showing a scene in the chapter. Make sure to include “dialogue bubbles” so that the reader can follow along with the action.
