Coping Skills A coping skill is the way that you handle your anger, stress, anxiety, fear or any other
feeling!
A good coping skill is one that helps you feel better in the moment without hurting
yourself or anyone else. It is also one that doesn’t get you into any trouble now or
later.
A poor coping skill is one that might feel good when you use it, but ends up hurting
you or other people. Using a poor coping skill for a long time can be harmful.

Science Activity – Waterproof Penguins
We are exploring how penguins keep their feathers waterproof.
You may need help and support to read, understand and complete this activity. Ask
staff, parents and carers if you need someone to help you. you may have to wait until
they are free to help you.
WARNING: Make sure you are in the kitchen with parents or carers when you
do this activity as we do not want anyone slipping on wet floors.
This activity is designed to show the effect of spreading water-repellent (repellent
means a material that does not let the water in), product over an absorbent material
(absorbent means a material that soaks the water up like kitchen towel). Birds, such
as penguins, use their beak to spread oil from a ‘preen gland’ (near their tail) all over
their feathers.
In this activity crayon is used (as it is wax based) to make part of the paper water
resistant. When sprayed, water should form beads on the paper penguin that has
been coloured with crayon, but soak into the black and white untreated paper
penguin. This effect is also used in the clothes we wear, to make jackets waterproof.
Question:
1 Do you know how penguins keep warm?
Penguins are in the water for long periods at a time, but need to keep their feathers
in good condition and waterproof. They spread oil all over their feathers, from a
gland near their tail, the oil helps to make the tips of the feathers waterproof, and this
keeps the fluffy part of the feather dry so that it can hold a layer of air against the
penguin’s body.
Activity:
You need to use crayons, which are made with wax – this works in the same way as
the oil from a penguin’s preen gland. You need to turn the page for the penguins.
Colour in one penguin’s tummy, as completely as you can, using whatever colours
you like – but don’t get any crayon on the other penguin. To test if the wax has
worked, we are going to spray two paper penguins with water – one penguin whose
tummy is coloured in with wax crayon, and one penguin who is not coloured in at all.
Tell us what happened to your penguins when you sprayed them with water?

Method
1. Pre heat oven to 220C/ fan 200C/gas 7 and lightly grease baking tray.
2. 350g self-raising flour into a large bowl with half tsp salt and 1 tsp baking
powder, then mix.
3. Add 85g butter cubed, then rub in with your fingers until the mix looks like
fine crumbs then stir in 3 tablespoon caster sugar.
4. Put 175ml milk into a jug and heat in the microwave for about 30 secs
until warm, but not hot.
5. Add 1 tsp vanilla extract, then set aside for a moment.
6. Make a well in the dry mix, then add the liquid and combine it quickly with
a knife – it will seem pretty wet at first.
7. Scatter some flour onto the work surface and tip the dough out. Cover
the dough and your hands with a little more flour, then fold the dough
over 2-3 times until it’s a little smoother. Pat into a round - about 4cm
deep.
8. Take a 5cm cutter (smooth-edged cutters tend to cut more cleanly, giving
a better rise) and dip it into some flour. Plunge into the dough, then
repeat. You may need to press what’s left of the dough back into a round
to cut out more scones.
9. Brush the tops with a beaten egg, then carefully place onto the hot
baking tray.
10. Bake for 10 to 15 mins until risen and golden on the top and place on a
cooling tray.
11. Eat warm or cold served with jam and clotted cream to taste -
Scrumptious!
We hope you enjoy eating
Jonathan’s Scones.
