“There are varieties of service,
but the same Lord.” 1 Corinthians 12:5 ESV
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
Jesus’ words to the church in Thyatira are recorded in The Revelation to
John: “‘I know your works, your love and faith and service and patient en-
durance, and that your latter works exceed the first.’” [2:19 ESV] If you
continue reading, however, you’ll find that Jesus also expresses deep con-
cern about other things that were taking place in the church and He urges
them to “hold fast what you have until I come.” Jesus is calling them to be
faithful to the mission of sharing the Gospel, to grow spiritually mature and
teach disciples – followers of Christ – about what it means to be members
of God’s family.
As most of you know Redeemer is moving into the fifth year of its exist-
ence as an Anglican parish with two locations, Franklin and Norwood.
There’s a danger that we can become too “comfortable” as we attend Sun-
day worship, assume that everything is working well and simply “relax”
and enjoy each other’s company as we worship together and pause for a
few minutes over coffee. The biblical model of Church, however, is not
one of comfort; certainly worship is an important part of our life together
but we’re also called to pray, to preach the Gospel, to read and study Holy
Scripture, to encourage and hold one another accountable as members of a
family, to grow spiritually mature and to serve others, within and outside
the parish. This can’t occur only on Sunday – it needs to happen through-
out the week.
It says in First Peter: “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one anoth-
er, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who
speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength
that God supplies – in order that in everything God may be glorified
through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever.
Amen.” [4:10-11 ESV]
The mission of the Anglican Church in North America is “Reaching North
America with the transforming love of Jesus Christ.” Our parish mission
states: “To celebrate the Christian faith acknowledging Jesus Christ as Lord
and Savior, uphold Scripture as the unchanging Word of God, and lead oth-
ers into a saving relationship with Him through Biblical teaching and fel-
lowship.” It’s clear that much remains to be accomplished. Your vestry

The Church of the Redeemer is a com-
munity of Christians
who seek to follow
Jesus Christ and lead others into a saving
relationship with Him
as it practices the Christian Faith within
the Anglican tradi-
tion.
The focus of the par-
ish is the reading and
studying of the Bible, through which God
has declared the Good
News of salvation from sin and the hope
of eternal life, and the
celebration of the sac-rament of Holy Com-
munion each Sunday.
The Church of the Redeemer is a parish
of The Anglican Dio-
cese in New England, The Anglican Church
in North America. It
is committed to work-
ing with Christians in all traditions and to
join with other parish-
es and our bishops to present Jesus Christ
in the power of the
Holy Spirit that peo-ple everywhere will
come to know Him as
Lord and serve Him
as King in the fellow-ship of His Church. OFFICE HOURS

believes 2012 is an important time to stay focused on mis-
sion as we seek to understand how God is calling us to
move forward as a parish. The vestry believes that minis-
try to families and youth is a very important part of our
mission and they have taken a step of faith by calling Pas-
tor Dan Sylvia to full-time ministry at Redeemer. As
Christians each of us is a vital member of a multigenera-
tional family seeking to live out our faith together.
This is time to discern our spiritual gifts and commit our-
selves to use them to build up the parish and to grow more
mature in our faith as we live together as members of the
family of God. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February
22nd. Lent is an excellent time to reflect on our life togeth-
er and to draw closer to God and to one another. During
Lent there’ll be opportunities to do this by studying and
sharing within a small group. Groups will meet at various
times and will all use a study series entitled “The Prodigal
God” which focuses on the essential message of Jesus
that’s contained within one of His most familiar parables,
the Prodigal Son. In the parable Jesus reveals God’s prodi-
gal grace toward both the irreligious and the moralistic.
This study should challenge all of us to see Christianity in a
whole new way. Please read Pastor Dan’s article about
small groups on page 3.
As your brother in Christ, I urge you to take time this Lent
to reflect on how God is calling you to use your spiritual
gifts to help build up His holy Church, the Body of Christ
in the world.
Grace and peace,
Father Jack+

NEW ROAD AHEAD: REDEEMER SMALL GROUPS In this month’s opening article Father Jack offered a picture of Church that calls for
more than once-a-week participation. As we grow in Christ we begin to realize that
following Jesus requires us to have a comprehensive faith, an everyday faith. Be-
lievers are called to a life that models the entirety of what the Bible teaches. We
cannot pick and choose what days and what things we give to God, we must give
Him our all. One way we will strive to grow in that reality during this year at Re-
deemer is by doing small groups together! Father Jack described family as multigen-
erational (the oldest of our body to the youngest = one big family!) and as I look to
God for His vision of Family Ministry here, I see no better way to encourage spiritu-
al growth than for ALL of us to enter into intentional day-to-day life with each other!
The New Testament is replete with examples of the early church meeting not just on the Sabbath to wor-
ship but meeting every day to discuss God’s word, pray together and to meet each other’s needs. Father
Jack, the Wardens and I believe this model is the basis for our parish to participate in small group minis-
try. Here is a list of ways small groups help us enjoy comprehensive and true biblical fellowship with
God and each other:
1. They meet the need for a biblical pattern. (Acts 20:20)
2. They meet the need for intimate personal relationships. (Ecclesiastes 4:9-11)
3. They meet the need for individual expression. (1 Corinthians 14:26)
4. They meet the need for effective evangelism. (John 4:37)
5. They meet the need for accelerating spiritual growth. (Ephesians 4:16)
6. They meet the need for developing leaders. (2 Timothy 2:2)
7. They meet the need for releasing every believer into ministry. (Ephesians 4:12)
8. They meet the need for individual accountability amongst believers. (James 5:16)
The next question is “what exactly is a small group?” A small group is a group of approximately 6 to 12
people (in special circumstances maybe more) that meet during the week to pray together, study God’s
word and how it applies to their lives and to encourage authentic care and fellowship with and for one
another. We envision these groups meeting in parishioners’ homes to encourage hospitality and warmth.
Each group will have a leader and a host that will help to facilitate discussion and keep everything on
track during the group meetings.
These groups are not intended to be simply Bible studies, but to be community builders! The goal of the-
se groups is not only for participants to grow in faith but to also care for one another and create/foster
true community here at Redeemer; to truly “…have everything in common”. These groups are great
ways for friends and those who are nervous about coming to a church service on Sunday to be welcomed
into our church family in a more intimate and caring way! The Clergy and Wardens have a vision that
each and every person at Redeemer will find great value in participating in a small group! Already
there are a few small groups meeting during the week at Redeemer and as the year progresses more and
more groups will be available. These groups will take place on a variety of days and times to offer the
greatest flexibility for everyone to have a chance to participate. As Father Jack stated, during Lent we
will be giving everyone the opportunity to take part in a small group using The Prodigal God (Tim Kel-
ler) study. Be in prayer and on the lookout for the ways you can be involved in this exciting next step at
Redeemer!
“All the believers were together and had everything in common…every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and
enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.”
Acts 2:44-47 Blessings, Pastor Dan

Lenten DisciplinesLenten DisciplinesLenten Disciplines
Are you looking for ways to deepen your walk with Jesus during Lent? Many people choose to take on
a new discipline during Lent instead of (or in addition to) “giving something up.” During Lent this
year at Redeemer you will have some special opportunities to do this.
Ash Wednesday LiturgyAsh Wednesday LiturgyAsh Wednesday Liturgy
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 22nd. The Ash Wednesday liturgy, with the imposition of
ashes and Holy Communion, will begin on February 22nd at 7:30 p.m. at Redeemer-Franklin.
Wednesday Evening Prayer during LentWednesday Evening Prayer during LentWednesday Evening Prayer during Lent
The service of Evening Prayer will be offered each Wednesday during Lent, beginning on February
29th, at 7:30 p.m. in the church in Franklin. “The Daily Office” provides an opportunity to hear and
reflect on appointed readings from Holy Scripture in the daily lectionary and offers a time for prayer.

The Prodigal God The Prodigal God The Prodigal God ––– Finding Your Place at the TableFinding Your Place at the TableFinding Your Place at the Table
Lent is time to be intentional about going deeper in our faith – a season to grow more mature in what it
means to live the Christian life, not only on Sundays but throughout the week. I urge you to read and
reflect on Pastor Dan’s comments on page 3 about the importance of small groups for our parish.
During Lent there’ll be multiple, small group meetings, on various days and at various times, so that all
parishioners can select a time that works for them to be part of a small group during Lent. Each group
will use Tim Keller’s book, The Prodigal God, as the focus for their time together. This short book
offers an unforgettable journey of exploring one of the most powerful, but often misunderstood para-
bles in the Gospels, the parable of the Prodigal Son. Each of the six sessions will also have time to get
better acquainted and to pray for each other’s concerns and joys.
Multiple signup sheets will be available to enable you to select the group you would like to join.
Sunday Worship in LentSunday Worship in LentSunday Worship in Lent
As reminders of our journey through Lent the following changes will be incorporated on Sunday morn-
ing. The color of the season is purple to reflect the penitential nature of the season. Our Lenten wor-
ship reflects this tone in several ways:
There will be no flowers on the altar.
Sunday worship begins with “A Penitential Order.”
The Kyrie eleison replaces the Gloria in excelsis.
“Alleluias” are set aside until Easter, spoken and sung.
A Solemn Prayer over the People replaces the Blessing.
Some of these practices go back to the early days of the Church and they are utilized to help us remem-
ber and meditate on the great Paschal mystery -- the salvation God won for us by the suffering, death
and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Healing Prayer
at Redeemer…
The Church of the Redeemer is
blessed with the addition of a
healing ministry with the “laying
on of hands.” Dick and Donna
Tomassini have brought many
years of experience to offer this
to our parish, friends and family. It is available
every Sunday following the worship service in
the room to the left of the doors going out of the
church.
There have been several testimonials declaring
the healing the Lord has done. Wendy DiRico,
Chris Miller and Christine Keddy have given tes-
timonials. Many of us have heard Mary Potter
sing again! Praise God.
I have been working with Dick and Donna on a
personal level and have not only received physi-
cal healing, but an immense inner peace. The
peace that surpasses all understanding – truly a
gift from our Lord.
The Lord has declared that we are all His disci-
ples and that praying and working together, shar-
ing and healing, that we draw together as a com-
munity and an intimacy is established. We are
His hands and feet and we are given His authority
to heal and support one another. All healing is
done in the Name of Jesus and in the power of
the Holy Spirit.

Tips for giving:
Cut out and post the Acts 29
weekly Food Pantry shopping list
as a reminder when filling out the
family shopping list.
Add the Food Pantry items to the list. Pick up
a couple of items to donate each week – it
will make a big difference to those in need.
Arrive at the store and can’t remember the
weekly item? A jug of laundry detergent or
paper products can be a default item as they
are always needed.
On a tight budget? Buy store brand items and
use coupons.

Junior Warden, James Gaul, reported
on the recent “visioning day” attended
by the wardens and clergy; 2012 is en-
visioned as an important year of plan-
ning for the parish (as we stay obedient
to our mission), a time to grow more
mature spiritually and to make plans for
the future. Small groups are viewed as
important in this process.
The vestry unanimously approved hir-
ing Pastor Dan Sylvia on a full-time ba-

The next Anglican 4th Day (A4D) Co-ed week-
end will be held May 3rd through the 6th at
Betania II in Medway, MA. The weekend be-
gins on Thursday evening and ends Sunday af-
ternoon. It offers an opportunity to draw closer
to Christ with fellow Christians in a friendly,
non-threatening environment. During the week-
end participants live and learn together as they
listen to and discuss talks given by lay and cler-
gy speakers. The talks present a vision of the
Christian life and information about our faith,
the beliefs we share and how to live them out on
a daily basis.
A4D is part of a world-wide movement within
the Church that seeks to draw believers closer to
Jesus and become more fully committed to the
Christian communities of which they are a part.
A4D encourages the formation of groups of
men and women committed to the mission of
the Church and living the Christian life in the
world. A4D is designed to provide a time away
to focus on what is fundamental to being a
Christian – to live in union with Christ and to
share Him with others. Information about A4D
within The Anglican Church in North America
is available at http://www.anglican4thday.com/
