Trump Triumvirate Soon to Be OneBy Ray Schweibert

Who’s Best?By Christina Migioia

About two years after Trump Entertainment Resorts’ marina-district property sold for what was then consid-ered a steal, the smaller of the two Boardwalk casinos

owned by the company (formerly headed by the Donald), Trump Plaza, went for about half the amount Trump Marina sold for in May 2011. According to an Associated Press report, the Meruelo Group of Downey, California, purchased Trump Plaza for $20 million last week and plans to close the deal by the end of May. The sale is subject to approval by New Jersey casino regulators, and the transaction would represent the lowest price ever paid for a casino in Atlantic City, or roughly one-tenth what Trump Plaza cost to build in 1984. Trump Marina (now Golden Nugget) was sold to Landry’s Inc. owner Tilman Fertitta for $38 million in 2011. Trump Entertainment Resorts, of which Donald Trump now owns a 10 percent stake, is left with just one Atlantic City casino property, the Trump Taj Mahal. While a new name for the property is still undecided, it was reported that Meruelo will not continue to use the Trump name. According to its Web site (meruelogroup.com), the Meruelo Group is a minority-owned-and-operated holding company with vested interests in construction and engineering, and affiliated interests in real estate, food services and private equity. “Trump Plaza is one of the world’s most recognized gaming resort destinations and is an integral part of the Atlantic City landscape,” said Meruelo Group founder/CEO Alex Meruelo in the AP report. “Our com-pany is thrilled to have the opportunity to become the new owners of this property, and we are firmly committed toward establishing it as one of the elite destinations in Atlantic City and on the East Coast.” Trump Plaza is one of the smallest and lately one of the worst performing of A.C.’s 12 casinos. Its 2012 winnings were down about 25 percent from 2011.

Classic rock takes center stage on Friday, Feb. 22, when the iconic British band The Who plays Boardwalk Hall, and Revel teams up with Philadelphia’s classic rock sta-

tion 102.9 WMGK-FM to present a series of activities before, during and after the concert to keep the rock rolling. The radio station’s afternoon drive host and DJ, Andre Gardner, will begin the festivities by hosting a Who concert pre-party and live broadcast inside The Social at Revel from 2-7pm. Once the broadcast ends, Gardner will preside over a battle-of-the-bands event dubbed “Who’s Best Battle of the Bands.” The battle will feature four bands facing off for a prize package that includes a contract to play three separate paid engagements at The Social. The competing bands — Final Vinyl, The Dead Poets, Them Bones and Doc Hollywood — are well-known cover bands from the tri-state area and former WMGK House Band contest winners. Each group will play a 30-minute set of classic-rock covers, and the battle is set to end at 10:30pm when the winner is determined by the volume of crowd applause. In celebration of their victory, the winning band will launch into a second live performance at The Social that will coincide with the end of The Who’s show at Boardwalk Hall, and keep concert-goers rocking at Revel. The event is free and no tickets necessary. Attendees must be 21 or older. Visit revelresorts.com for more.

The Fall & Further Decline of The Mighty King of Love

Phil Lee has a hauntingly famil-iar voice. The self-described knife-thrower, raconteur, rapscallion and bon vivant began penning songs in his teens, picking up his first gig in the 1960s. Since then, he’s traveled the country — either truck driving to make ends meet or relocating for his music. On his new album, the pride of Durham, N.C. and Nashville, Tenn., wrangles togeth-er a dozen bittersweet and rough-hewn originals (including a co-write with Barry Goldberg — the pianist in Bob Dylan’s group when Dylan famously went “electric” at Newport in 1965 — on the opener “I Hated to See You Go” and a song he wrote with the late Duane Jarvis, “All You Need”), all which make for a strik-ing listen. Along with working with the Flying Burrito Brothers, driving a truck for Neil Young and playing drums for decades, Lee has carved a unique niche for himself in the alt-country, acoustic post-modern honky tonk world. — Jeff Schwachter

Down Under DivaMega-popular Australian-born singer/dancer/DJ Havana Brown will host the party at Borgata’s mur.mur nightclub Saturday night, Feb. 23.By Ray Schweibert • [email protected]

see more online @

nightlife >>

The talent-laden 28-year-old best known as DJ Havana Brown (birth name Angelique Meunier) has the

ambition and the glamorous good looks to match the singing, dancing and DJ skill sets that have made her highly sought-after on nightclub circuits worldwide.

She would also be quick to tell you, in her Australian-inflected voice, that part of the reason she has had charted two No. 1 Billboard Club/Dance hits, earned a 12-month DJ residency at renowned Paris Las Vegas’ Chateau nightclub, toured as the support act for Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, the Pussycat Dolls, Rihanna and others, is that she was given her parents’ blessings to pursue her passions early on.

“I honestly can’t say that I always saw myself doing what I’m doing, but leaving high school I asked myself ‘well, what am I going to be doing the rest of my life? What do I love doing?’” she tells AC Weekly. “And the thought of going to university and studying something that I didn’t really enjoy passion-ately, I’d think ‘is that what life is about?’ I want to enjoy myself, have fun, be passion-ate and live for the moment.

“I told my parents I wanted to take a year off and just pursue music, and they told me I should do it now because it’s not something you can do 10 years from now. You can go back to university at 40 years old but you can’t start your pop-star career at 40.”

Brown gravitated toward DJing follow-ing a stint as a singer in a band, eventu-ally signing with Island Records Australia (becoming the only female DJ to sign a major-label recording deal in Australia) and started releasing a compilation-album series called Crave that featured remixes of songs from other artists. That led to her series of touring support-act roles, and in 2009 she began providing remixes for Party People, a Saturday night radio show that broadcasts across Australia.

In 2010 she did a live vocal duet with Enrique Iglesias on the X Factor (an Australian music reality TV show) and in April 2011 released her debut single “We Run the Night” that would become certified triple platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association. A remix of the song featuring American rapper Pitbull reached No. 1 on Billboard’s U.S. Hot Dance Club Songs chart, and she recently released a second song that gained No. 1 status, “Big Banana.”

“I was DJing for years before I released my first single,” she says. “I always enjoyed just DJing and always had fun and loved what I was doing, but when I got to involve an element of performance and singing, I just felt like I was connecting to the crowd a lot more — almost sharing a part of me, which is more fun but can be a bit scary at the same time. They seem to feel what I’m

feeling and I feel what they’re feeling, and I can release a lot more energy toward them. So I don’t know if I could do just a DJ set anymore. For me, the standard is to be able to DJ and perform and sing and sometimes even incorporate my dances and do a full-blown performance in among the DJ set. That’s like my perfect night.”

Brown says that the trend of DJs gaining heightened celebrity status is one that has evolved over many years.

“Right now the music playing in the nightclubs and dance clubs is very popular, and you’re seeing more DJs coming forward and becoming artists known for their pro-duction work as much as their club work,” says Brown, who now resides in southern California. “These are popular times for dance music — styles like electro and house and dubstep and trap — that’s the trend. And since the DJs know what’s happening in the clubs right now, it makes sense to go to a DJ to produce something.

“We’re seeing it and noticing it more now [in the U.S.], but it’s been happen-ing for decades, especially in Europe and Australia,” she says. “DJs were always mak-ing music and putting music out constantly, it just maybe never made it to popular radio as much as it does now. It’s a great time for us, and a great time for me. I’ve never really saw myself as just a DJ, I saw myself as a performer and being technically involved. I’m in my element right now.”

Brown’s electronic image is currently part of a six-week run on the largest moving bill-board in Times Square, New York City.

“I haven’t seen it yet,” she says. “But actually, on my way to Atlantic City, I’m going to stop over in New York, I’m going to find a spot somewhere right in front of that billboard, have a coffee and sit there for maybe two or three hours looking at myself [laughs].” ■

Kozak’s Disappearing ActBy David Spatz • [email protected]

Last week, I witnessed something in a casino showroom that I haven’t seen in a long time.

I watched an old pro at work. During the course of his nightly shows at

the Comedy Stop at the Tropicana, Kozak the Magician performed two of the coolest tricks I’ve ever seen.

First he created a neat illusion by turning a small audience into a full house. Then he pulled off the ultimate disappearing act.

Magicians hate it when anyone gives away their secrets. But if there’s a magicians union out there, they probably won’t mind that I’m going to explain how he did one trick and why he did the other.

But first, some background.Five years ago, Paul Kozak magically

appeared in Atlantic City after a five-year run of his comedy magic show in Las Vegas. Kozak — Koz to his family, friends and fans — had sold Comedy Stop owner Bob Kephart on the concept of presenting an early-evening show several hours before Atlantic City’s original casino comedy joint presents its nightly chucklefest.

Kozak thought a show presented during the dinner hour might just have a shot at drawing people to the Comedy Stop, which is located in the Trop’s high-traffic retail, dining and entertainment complex known as The Quarter.

Kephart, whose club celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, gave Kozak a shot.

For the next five years, Kozak was prob-ably one of the hardest-working men in show business, and easily the hardest-working per-former in Atlantic City. Seven nights a week, 51 weeks a year, Kozak took the stage. He’d have worked that 52nd week, too, except the club was closed during Christmas week.

It was easy for Koz to attract a crowd on weekends in the 300-seat club. But from the beginning, weekday audiences proved to be his biggest challenge. Unless there was a big convention in town, or a midweek holiday, a typical weekday crowd often numbered in the dozens on a good night.

Rather than throw in the towel, Kozak, the best sleight-of-hand magician I’ve ever seen, pressed on. Regardless of whether there were 300 people in the room or 30, he performed with the same unbridled joy every night.

Which brings us to last week, when a smaller-than-usual audience showed up one night. Kozak could have cancelled the show, which some artists would have quickly done. Or he could have simply phoned it in.

Instead, Kozak treated the folks to a tour-de-force of magic and comedy.

Ten minutes into the show, he had the audience eating out of the hands that per-form some amazing legerdemain. Twenty minutes in, he knew the names of just about everyone in the house and began involv-ing them in the act. They were more than witnesses to Kozak’s tricks — they became

Koz closed his show that night by literally making himself disappear

— for good.participants.

For 75 minutes, Koz weaved his double-entendre and interactive comedy around some very cool tricks. Guys like David Cooperfield and Chris Angel have nothing on Koz and, in fact, could probably take a few lessons from him. His skill wasn’t lost on the audience, which rewarded him with several standing ovations.

That was the first trick that impressed me: Making an audience of just a dozen-and-a-half people seem 10 times bigger. He did it with an engagingly infectious personality, some really cool tricks and a level of old-school showmanship that seems to be miss-ing from the entertainment business.

He personalized the show to such an extent that each of the 18 people in the audi-ence probably felt like they were getting a private show.

Two nights later, Kozak — for the first and only time during his five-year run — pulled off the ultimate vanishing act.

Kozak had announced in advance he was going to perform this trick for the first and only time in Atlantic City, so his usual Sunday night audience was much larger than usual.

Koz closed his show that night by literally making himself disappear — for good.

Paul Kozak is moving to Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii, where he’ll become the featured performer and a partner in a beach-front restaurant and nightclub. Solving this disappearing trick was easy: It was an oppor-tunity he simply couldn’t resist.

Moving forward, Kozak said a series of young comedy magicians would fill his spot at the Comedy Stop. And while they may be able to take his place on stage and perform some pretty cool tricks of their own, they’ll have a long way to go before they can fill Koz’s size 15 shoes and his even bigger per-sonality.

Aloha and mahalo, Koz. n

Simple Ways to Save on Your WeddingAccording to a 2012 report in Brides maga-

zine, the average American couple spends just under $27,000 on their wedding, while

their northern neighbors in Canada spend slightly more than $23,000 on average for their big day. Clearly couples, regardless of which side of the bor-der they call home, can expect to invest a substan-tial amount of money for their weddings.

While many couples find the cost of a wedding is well worth it, others would like to find ways to save so their big day isn’t a budget-buster. Such savings aren’t always easy to come by, especially for couples with a very distinctive picture in mind of what their

wedding should be. However, even couples strongly committed to a certain wedding style might change their minds once they realize how much such a dream wedding will cost. For those couples as well as couples who simply want to save some money, the following are a few ideas to avoid busting your budget without venturing too far from your dream wedding.

• Trim the guest list. The guest list is per-haps the easiest place to begin saving money. Many reception halls will charge by the head, so consider if you really need to invite 150 guests or if 100 will do. Such trimming can save you a substantial amount

of money. For example, a banquet hall that charges $200 per guest will cost couples with a guest list of 150 $30,000 for the reception alone. Cutting that guest list to 100 reduces that cost by $10,000. When putting together the guest list, remove those candi-dates who would best be described as acquaintanc-es. This can include coworkers with whom you don’t socialize, as well as old college friends to whom you rarely speak. Distant cousins you haven’t spoken to in years can also be cut from the list.

• Don’t go overboard on the gown. Styles are ever-changing, so there’s a strong chance brides won’t be passing down their wedding gowns to their

own daughters someday. What’s popular now will likely seem outdated by the time your daughter walks down the aisle. Keep this in mind when shopping for a wedding dress, which can be made in the same design as the one you try on but with cheaper fabrics that are a fraction of the cost.

The disparity between gown costs in the United States and Canada should paint a good picture of how easily brides can save money on their gowns. According to a survey of wedding trends con-ducted by Weddingbells, an online resource for Canadian brides, the average Canadian bride in 2011 spent just under $1,800 on her wedding gown, while the average American bride spends

roughly $1,100 on her gown. Though the rea-sons for that disparity are unclear, it’s safe to say there are savings to be had for brides who don’t want to break the bank paying for their wedding gowns.

• Get hitched in the off-season. Many couples prefer to get married sometime between the months of May through October. During these months, venues and ven-dors, including limousine services, caterers, photog-raphers, musicians, and deejays, are more expen-sive. If you are willing to switch your wedding date to the off-season you can save a substantial amount of money. In addition, you likely won’t face as much competition for the best venues and vendors as you will during the peak wedding season.

• Trim your bever-age budget. The bar tab at the end of the recep-tion can be considerable, but there are ways to save money while ensur-ing your guests can still toast you and yours with

a few libations. Rather than offering a full bar, limit the choices to beer and wine, which will be perfectly acceptable to most guests anyway. In addition, rather than paying the caterer for the wine, buy your own and you’ll save a consid-erable amount of money. You may have to pay the caterer a fee to pour the wine, but that fee is neg-ligible compared to what you’d pay the company to provide the wine.

• Choose a buffet-style dinner over waiter service. Many guests will no doubt prefer a buffet-style dinner instead of waiter service, so take advantage of that and choose a more affordable buffet-style dinner that allows diners to choose their own entrees and side dishes.

When it comes to trim-ming wedding costs, cou-ples will have to make compromises. But those compromises don’t have to come at the cost of a beautiful and memorable event. n

Tips for a Great Best Man [email protected]

The best man toast can be one of the most memora-

ble parts of a couple’s wedding. Sometimes a toast is memorable for its humor and heartfelt sense of appreciation for the groom and his bride, while other toasts are more memorable for all the wrong reasons.

One of the reasons best man toasts can be so unpredictable is that giving a best man toast is such a unique experience. It’s some-thing many men never do, while those who do give a best man toast may only do it once in a lifetime. It’s understand-able to be nervous when asked to give a best man

toast, but there are a few tricks of the trade a best man can employ to calm those nerves and ensure his toast is memorable for all the right reasons.

• Practice makes perfect. Few people are capable of standing in front of a crowd of peo-ple and speaking off the cuff. A best man should take this into account and practice his speech before the big day. A spur -o f - the -moment speech may provide an adrenaline rush, but such an endeavor may come off as if you didn’t care enough to put the effort into writing a thoughtful toast ahead of time. In addition, practicing the

toast once it’s been writ-ten will make you feel more comfortable and confident in front of the crowd. If possible, prac-tice in front of a friend or family member so you can solicit feedback. A friend or relative might be able to help you fine-tune the speech, which in turn can calm your nerves once you’re hand-ed the microphone.

• Avoid alcohol. Getting liquored up prior to your toast is a recipe for disaster. Though it may seem like a good idea to employ alcohol to calm your nerves and lower your inhibitions, it’s not a good idea. Consuming alcohol before your toast increases the chance that you will end up embarrassing the bride and groom as well as yourself.

• Get to the point. Men and women who have attended their fair share of wedding recep-tions no doubt have sat through a long-winded toast from the best man or maid of honor. Such toasts can bring a fes-tive reception to a grind-ing halt, and guests will likely tune out before the best man or maid of

honor gets to the point. Being succinct should be a goal for a best man with regard to his toast. Avoid long-winded walks down Memory Lane in favor of a toast that thoughtfully cuts to the chase and lets everyone get back to celebrating.

• Spin a yarn. While it’s important to be brief, don’t be so brief that no one at the reception learns about your relationship to the groom. Share a humor-ous anecdote from your mutual past to illustrate the type of relationship you and the groom share with one another. This story should have an ele-ment of humor but don’t include anything too embarrassing, and all ex-girlfriends should be considered off-limits.

• Congratulate the couple. Because nerves play such a significant part in many best man toasts, it can be easy to forget to congratu-late both the bride and groom. Don’t just toast the groom at the end of your best man speech; toast his new bride as well. n

Popular Love [email protected]

There are many different ways to convey feelings of affection. Some people pen poetry, others bestow gifts, while still

others feel moved by music and lyrics. Songs have long been a popular way to convey emo-tions, and love songs have been performed by artists from nearly every musical genre at some point in time. Although music is subjec-tive, some love songs have stood out as fan favorites. Commonly featured at weddings or as the backdrop on romantic evenings, the fol-lowing songs are considered some of the more popular love songs of all time.

1. “Love Theme From ‘A Star Is Born’” (Evergreen): This Barbara Streisand classic from the hit film helped Streisand earn both an Academy Award for Best Song from a Motion Picture and Grammy Award for Song of the Year.

2. “Up Where We Belong” Few people can forget the ending scene of An Officer and a Gentleman when Richard Gere sweeps Debra Winger off of her feet. The song “Up Where We Belong” by Jennifer Warnes and Joe Cocker from the movie will always be a romantic favorite.

3. “All My Life” Former Jodeci members K-Ci and JoJo created an enduring romantic song with this pop hit.

4. “Save the Best for Last” This song became Vanessa William’s signature song and a smash hit.

5. “Be With You” Mary J. Blige emphasizes sticking with the one you love by being loyal.

6. “I Do It for You” This Bryan Adams hit was nominated for an Oscar as the theme for the 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

7. “I’ll Make Love to You” This Boyz II Men song was one of the longest-running No. 1 hits of all time.

8. “Lovesong” The Cure’s Robert Smith penned this song as a present to his wife, Mary, in 1988.

9. “Sweet Love” Anita Baker’s soulful hit helped turn her from a budding R&B singer into a household name.

10. “Love Me Tender” His good looks and gyrating hips helped thousands of women fall in love with Elvis Presley. However, this sig-nature love song endeared the famed crooner to many others. n

Tenacious D at House of Blues

T enacious D is the comedic satirical rock duo featuring actors/comedians Jack Black and Kyle Gass. While Black is better known for his film roles (School of Rock,

King Kong, Kung Fu Panda), the duo was an underground hit in the L.A. music scene, had a TV series on HBO and released a movie, Tenacious D: Pick of Destiny. The pair’s latest album is Rize of the Fenix, which All-Music.com called, “A rousing comeback for Tenacious D.” — Lori Hoffman

Kings Lounge stands out as one of the most ambitious regional restaurants to open in a long while.

Fit for a KingBlending Asian and Middle Eastern culinary influences, Kings Lounge is the first upscale restaurant venture of Egyptian-born owner Michael Beshay. By Frank Gabriel • [email protected]

As the Atlantic City International Airport/FAA Tech Center continues its inexorable expansion, a rippling

wave of service industries should now begin to appear along the largely empty travel cor-ridors leading to those transportation hubs.

We specifically noted the need for an improved airport-area food scene in a col-umn two years ago. If the initial entry in that growth zone is any indication, things are indeed looking up.

Kings Lounge, the first upscale venture from Egyptian-born local pizzeria owner Michael Beshay, stands out as one of the most ambitious regional restaurants to open in a long while. Sharing a building with a rather nondescript bar called Christie’s, Kings Lounge couldn’t be any more dramati-cally different. Décor, crafted personally by Beshay, is an exotic Middle Eastern/Asian confluence. Dramatic red and black shades, a massive corner fireplace, unusual design elements — like one wall’s soothing bamboo waterfall — plus well-spaced seating gener-ate a dreamy, international room.

Food sampled did nothing to diminish that thinking, beginning with complimen-tary hummus, piped onto a plate and accom-panied by a basket of warm, shredded pita bread. More elastic, almost peanut buttery, than those you’ll find in stores, this ochre blend was light and bright on the palate. The creamy, natural flavor of chickpeas remained front and center, unencumbered by excess garlic or seasoning. This authen-tic Egyptian recipe derives from Beshay’s mother’s family kitchen, and is the only item served at King’s Lounge not fashioned by executive chef Christopher Cassel.

My appetizer, steamed clams, includ-ed more than two dozen greenish cock-les. Imported from the Barents Sea north of Scandinavia, these were pearly gems,

slightly smaller than little necks with shells resembling those of scallops. Presented in a cool, dual-sided bowl nicely suited for shell discards, the tiny mollusk’s lively flavor was noticeably different from local Atlantic species.

Bathed in golden, lustrous broth of ele-phant garlic, chardonnay and lemon, it was akin to getting two different items — ten-der, juicy clams along with a bowl of warm, inviting seafood soup — an ideal culinary antidote for the final, lingering weeks of win-ter. Portioned like mussels — a much less expensive shellfish — it’s also an exceptional value at only $12.

Our other starter, the first item on the

menu, was a house signature. The Kings crab and lobster roll brought two well-formed pieces of Asian pastry. Tightly wound, they opened to reveal a filling almost-entire-ly composed of seafood. A sriracha-tinged remoulade dip and a petite seaweed salad completed the well-organized plating.

Another specialty, the Kings salad, includ-ed three of the world’s healthiest foods; spin-ach, raspberries and walnuts. Thin slices of red onion, surprisingly ripe tomatoes (where did these come from in the dead of winter?) and sheep’s milk feta each added complimentary aromas, textures and tastes. Tossed with strong raspberry vinaigrette, the ingredients paired superbly, although a

bit less dressing might have presented them more directly.

Entrees began with seared blue ginger diver scallops accompanied by truly fiery wasabi mashed potatoes, baby corn, sugar snap peas, sweet red chili puree and assort-ed ponzu sauces. The five scallops ranged from quarter to half-dollar sized shapes. Each was caramelized and topped off by a zingy stripe of blue ginger-galangal. The fresh, mildly flavored seafood worked like an artist’s canvas for the colorful pallet of accoutrements delivered, in hues of greens, yellow, red and purple.

My jumbo lump Peekytoe crab cakes were pan-seared and liberally provided at three per entrée. Peekytoe, or more accurately the Atlantic rock crab, is a species most often found in Maine’s coastal waters. Originally a nuisance catch for fishermen, they were ingeniously renamed in the last decade, leading to a marketing-based demand for their clean, sweet, chunky meat that is ide-ally suited for cakes — perhaps the Jersey shore’s most ubiquitous and popular dish?

If you consider yourself to be an afi-cionado of local crab cakes, you owe it to yourself to sample this variant. Plated with smoky, cumin-tinged Israeli couscous and assorted vegetables the crisp discs of seafood were ladled by a beneficial orange-cilantro drizzle.

Again demonstrating the kitchen’s ability to make something special out of the seem-ingly ordinary was a fig and date crème bru-lee. The moist pudding was laden with those desert fruits and accompanied by a garnish of plump, sliced strawberries.

Our other sweet was equally curious, but delicious — red velvet bread pudding. Dense and rich, it offered big chunks of cake blend-ed and baked with soft, binding custard. ■

“It’s been amazing; it’s been crazy. We can really see the impact this record had on people.”

5 Questions With ... New Found GloryBy Casey Harper • [email protected]

With seven studio albums, two EPs, and two cover albums, New Found Glory has continued to deliver its dis-

tinct raucous sound for more than 15 years. Having formed in 1997, the band served as one of punk-pop’s favorite purveyors, espe-cially as the genre took prevalence in the early 2000s. Unlike most bands these days, NFG has managed to keep its original mem-bers. Jordan Pundik, Chad Gilbert, Steve Klein, Ian Grushka, and Cyrus Bolooki comprise the quintet, which has put out chart-topping hits like “Hit or Miss” and “My Friends Over You.” Most recently, the band embarked on the Sticks and Stones anniversary tour to celebrate the 10 years that have passed since the album’s release. Gilbert, lead guitarist, took some time to phone in from California and talk to AC Weekly about the band that has become fam-ily, before its current tour hits the House of Blues at Showboat in Atlantic City Friday, Feb. 22.

New Found Glory has been together now for more than 15 years, and you’ve managed to keep all the original members of the band together.

Yeah, I think that at times we all don’t like each other, and then other times we do. ... But the one thing we all have in com-mon is that we love this band more than anything else. We know all of the amazing things that have happened to us in our lives, whether it be our loved ones, our friends, places we’ve seen across the world — it’s only been because of this band. It’s sort of opened up all these amazing things for us throughout the years, so we all are able to drop our personal differences to be able to continue seeing where this band takes us in our lives. ... I’m at the point where I’ve lived with them longer than I’ve lived with my own brother!

One of the things that New Found Glory

is often praised for and that your fans love about you is the lyric writing. How do you continue to find inspiration to keep your music and message so genuine?

I feel like it’s all where your head is at with writing music. There are people who write music as sort of a business thing. They want to get big and famous and popular, and sort of do whatever it takes, or adapt, and want to write a hit song. I’m not saying that New Found Glory has never written a song that has been popular, and I’m not saying that if we happen to write a song that gets played all over the radio again and is a huge hit, I’d hate it, no, I’m completely fine with that. But, with us, how we continue to be inspired and everything is we write music that strictly comes from what we’re going

through. Our music is a reflection of our per-sonality, things that go on in our lives.

You have such a loyal fan base, many of whom have been there since the beginning, so as you continue on the current tour, how has it been a different experience than previ-ous tours?

It’s been amazing; it’s been crazy. We can really see the impact this record had on peo-ple. They’re singing these songs louder than [it’s been on tour for] a long time. Even back when the record was out, which is saying a lot because when this record was out we were playing arenas and amphitheaters.

There must be, for both you and the fans, a sense of nostalgia at these shows.

Yeah, totally. And the cool thing about it is it’s almost like a celebration for every-body. It’s about our fans, and they’re able to hear that record, which [may be] their favor-ite. And in our encore we play songs from all of our records. And that’s what’s really cool about NFG — we’ve done a 10 year [celebration] of our self-titled record, which was insanely crazy, and now we’re on the 10-year tour of this record. We were never a band that had one album that people liked, and the others are just like eh.

There were rumors circulating about a hiatus, but you have dismissed that term. So how would you describe NFG’s future plans?

Busy! We’re doing a tour at the end of May. When we first booked the Sticks and Stones tour we did it at the end of last year and it was only 20 or less shows, it was a very short tour. So that’s why Jersey wasn’t on it [initially, but we eventually] decided to bring it there. And then at the end of May we’re doing a tour across the northern part of America and Canada. And then we have time off over the summer. Then in the fall we’ll be doing another hopefully package tour, teaming up with another band within a similar genre. It’s going to be busy as far as new music, too. We wrote three new songs and we’ll be releasing a live album with the three new songs that will come out around the time of that tour in the fall. We have a lot going on. As far as writing a whole new album, that wouldn’t be until around 2014. We’re releasing a lot of fun things this year that our fans are going to be psyched about. They’re going to love these three new songs — it’s going to hold them over until there’s a new album. ■

Pete Townshend talks about growing up before and after the Who formed as the U.K. rockers bring Quadrophenia and More Tour to Boardwalk Hall Feb. 22 By Ed Condran • [email protected]

Pete Townshend is energized again. During recent Who tours, the leg-endary vocalist-guitarist-songwrit-

er appeared to lack the fire, which has never left his co-conspirator vocalist Roger Daltrey’s belly.

But during the Who’s “Quadrophenia and More” show two months ago in Philadelphia, Townshend was full of vigor. (The show comes to Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City Friday, Feb. 22.)

One of the most literate rock lyricists was windmilling, jumping and smiling through-out the Who’s loud and satisfying set at the Wells Fargo Center.

“This is the time to have fun,” Townshend said during a recent book signing in Philadelphia.

“Who knows how long it’s going to last?”Townshend is speaking from experience.

Half of the Who’s remaining original lineup — bassist John Entwistle and drummer Keith Moon are deceased — Townshend has looked back at his life, which spans from cursed to charmed, while writing his engrossing recently released memoir Who I Am.

Townshend touches on his turbulent childhood, in which he was abused by his domineering grandmother.

“I had to sit my mother down to talk about what happened to me from when I was four-and-a-half to six-and-a-half,” Townshend said.

Townshend also looks back at his father, a saxophonist, who was often on the road when he was a child and his “mum,” a sing-er, who constantly cheated on his father.

She had five abortions. Those dark formative years inspired some

of Townshend’s finest work as the Who’s driving creative force, such as the rock opera Tommy.

But it wasn’t just personal issues, which helped form Townshend. He was a product of the times. The seminal guitarist-vocalist was born in war-torn West London in 1945.

“We were seriously disenfranchised,” Townshend said. “That’s the way it was for those born between 1945 and 1950. We didn’t know what we were going to do, so the music was really vital.”

Townshend, who is just glad to be around (“since I was 11, I’ve been waiting for bombs to blow us to bits,” he said to the 800 or so gathered at the Philadelphia book signing), told tales of drug indulgence as well as his favorite Keith Moon story. He waxed about how the late, loony Who drummer convinced a minister that he was possessed by an Indian couple.

“That was absolutely hilarious,” Townshend said. “I’ve never met anyone remotely like him.”

Townshend then went on to detail the ups and downs of being in the Who. He also explained how easy it is to bust a

Rickenbacker and how difficult it is to break a Stratocaster.

Townshend admitted that he was prone to destroying his guitar when he didn’t feel the show was good enough.

“These days I just try to put on the best shows so I can keep my guitars,” Townshend said.

Townshend doesn’t bash equipment much these days as a senior citizen, but he doesn’t have to engage in such destructive behav-ior.

There’s an elegance the elder statesman possesses now that was missing during his halcyon days. Townshend can’t jump any-more, but, yes, he can still windmill better than any other guitarist. But it’s enough to just watch him deliver the goods in his inimitable manner.

Townshend will go down as one of the greatest rock writers in history. His music is provocative and has such great depth. It’s a pleasure to immerse yourself in the Who, which somehow to this day pulls it off live without two of its major players.

There was never a drummer like Keith Moon, who was beyond eccentric.

“It’s amazing that the Who continued on without him,” Tommy Smothers said.

“When the Who was on our show [The Smothers Brothers] I just marveled at what Keith Moon was capable of doing.”

But the late maniac has been gone for more than 30 years. Bassist John Entwistle was the rock of the band. He was quiet yet sturdy and an underrated songwriter. But the Who marches on with drummer Zak Starkey, who is Ringo Starr’s son, and bass-ist Pino Palladino.

The Who’s modern-day shows remain intense, entertaining and loud. Enjoy the shows while you can since Townshend is a man of many passions.

While holding court during his book sign-ing, he noted that he enjoys doing much more than playing in the Who.

So even though he is enjoying the current tour, who knows what the future may hold? Perhaps this is the final tour. But after experiencing the Who’s uneven “It’s Hard” tour back in 1982, I thought that was the end of the line for one of the greatest live bands in rock history.

You never know when it’s going to be over — just as the Rolling Stones appear set to embark on a very profitable tour 50 years on. But you get the feeling with the prag-matic Townshend that it’s not about money, it’s about music.

The current show — in which the Who plays its 1973 album Quadrophenia, as well as some of the band’s other classic tunes — covers a number of musical bases and Townshend appears to be enjoying this jaunt more than the one back in ’82.

It’s fabulous that Townshend and Daltrey, who once belted out the unforgettable line, “I hope I die before I get old,” are still mak-ing a solid contribution to world of music at an advanced age.

Someday we’ll all miss the Who. ■

“We were seriously disenfranchised. That’s the way it was for those born between

1945 and 1950. We didn’t know what we were going to do, so the music was really vital.”

On the 1973 MCA release Quadrophenia, Pete Townshend and his bandmates revisited the

rock-opera concept they made success-ful in 1969 with the double-album (and film) Tommy. With Quadrophenia, also a double album and film (the latter featur-ing a young Sting), Townshend’s songs tell the tale of a young mod in London coming of age in the mid-1960s. The album, a fan favorite, features some of the Who’s most powerful music — with stellar synthesizer work — including the songs “The Real Me,” “I’m One” and “Love, Reign O’er Me.”

“We haven’t [worked out all the details] but we thought it would be so much fun

to announce it on Valentine’s Day.”

Miss America Is Coming HomeThe Miss America Pageant is leaving Las Vegas for a return to the BoardwalkBy Lori Hoffman • [email protected]

The classic Miss America theme song, “There She Is Miss America,” with its lyrics about, “The dream of a million girls who are more than pretty can come true in Atlantic City,” is relevant once again.

As was announced Wednesday, Feb. 13, the Miss America Pageant is headed back to Atlantic City, where it was founded.

The Atlantic City region was shocked when the pageant packed up and headed west to Las Vegas in 2006.

However, the pageant organization remained based locally, and after a seven-year run in Sin City, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s spokesman Michael Drewniak confirmed Feb. 13 that the pageant would return to the Boardwalk.

This was followed by a Thursday morning (Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day) Boardwalk Hall press conference with New Jersey Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno, who formally announced the return of the pageant, although all the details have not been worked out yet.

Guadagno announced that, “[Our] team worked very hard and in the space of just six weeks is able to announced today and to welcome back to Atlantic City, the Miss America Pageant. I want to congratulate the CRDA, the Atlantic City Convention and Visitors Authority, and the Atlantic City Alliance as we celebrate the return home of the Miss America Pageant. We haven’t [worked out all the details] but we thought it would be so much fun to announce it on Valentine’s Day.”

She went on to praise Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson and the Atlantic County Board of Freeholders for being aware that the Miss America contract was expiring.

“They called the Governor’s Office in early December and later Levinson called me and said, ‘Can we bring the Miss America Pageant back to Atlantic City?’” She also

noted that they are working on a three-year deal. It will take place in September 2013, but the date has not been finalized. Pageant fans get ready to say, “Show me your shoes,” because it was announced that the Miss America Parade would also be back on the Boardwalk.

“Thankfully, the Miss America Pageant is back where it belongs,” Atlantic City Mayor Lorenzo Langford says about the announcement.

The pageant began as a bathing suit competition designed to extend the tourist season by an extra week after Labor Day in the “Boardwalk Empire” era of 1921 when 16-year-old Margaret Gorman won the title.

In was the following year when Gorman’s title officially became Miss America.

As the years passed the pageant became a national treasure and one of the top-rated TV shows in its 1960s heyday when master

of ceremonies Bert Parks would sing “There She Is Miss America” to the winner. It has also earned recognition as one of the world’s largest scholarship programs for women.

The pageant suffered from its old-fash-ioned attitudes in a changing world and in its final years in Atlantic City it struggled for TV ratings to the point that ABC declined to renew its broadcast rights in 2004.

When the pageant came to an agreement with Country Music Television (CMT) to broadcast the show, it was moved to Las Vegas and the next pageant took place on Jan. 21, 2006. In 2011 the pageant returned to ABC.

Perhaps the biggest surprise is that it took this long for the Miss America Pageant to return to its former home. Donald Kravitz, who has covered and photographed the Miss America Pageant for many years, had an interview in 2007 with Miss America Organization president and CEO Art McMaster that suggested there was a lot of disappointment among the pageant organiz-ers and volunteers about the move to Las Vegas.

“We as an organization would entertain any approach that made the Miss America Organization stronger and, of course, we would entertain any approach from Atlantic City,” said McMaster in 2007.

“So all it would take is a phone call from the right group?” asked Kravitz, six years ago.

McMaster stopped, looked back and smiled, giving Kravitz the impression that the organization was willing to listen and negotiate.

It took six more years, but the pageant is back in the city where it all began.

(Read Kravitz’ 2007 interview with Art McMaster at acweekly.com as well as a brand-new interview conducted between the two this week.) ■

ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY’S CULTURAL CALENDAR

®

The South Jersey Poets Collective (SJPC) is a local organization dedi-

cated to sustaining a com-munity of artists interested in writing and sharing their poetry. It is comprised of a wide-ranging group of about 40 poets who meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month at Dante Hall Theater of the Arts [14 North Mississippi Ave. in A.C.] in what is called the World Above Poetry Night series. Each segment starts around 7pm with an open-mike format that is free and open to the public, and is followed by a reading from a featured special-guest poet. On Wednesday, Feb. 27, the SJPC’s special guest will be Paul Siegell, author of three books of poetry — wild life rifle fire (2010), jambandbootleg (2009) and Poemergency Room (2008). — Ray Schweibert

In mostly wide-open races, predictions and preferencesBy Lori Hoffman • [email protected]

Here are my predictions and preferences for the Academy Awards, which take place Sunday, Feb. 24, on ABC, with

Seth MacFarlane as the host. For a more detailed analysis, go to acweekly.com under the Arts & Entertainment/Movie Reviews tab for my three-part series.

Best Supporting Actor• Alan Arkin, Argo• Robert De Niro, Silver Linings Playbook• Phillip Seymour Hoffman, The Master• Tommy Lee Jones, Lincoln• Christoph Waltz, Django UnchainedPrediction: Robert De NiroPreference: Robert De Niro

With all five nominees previous winners, De Niro’s great comeback performance wins in a tight race over Tommy Lee Jones.

Best Supporting Actress• Anne Hathaway, Les Misérables• Helen Hunt, The Sessions• Sally Field, Lincoln• Amy Adams, The Master• Jacki Weaver, Silver Linings PlaybookPrediction: Anne HathawayPreference: Helen Hunt

Anne Hathaway looks like a lock to be smil-ing Oscar night, but I’ll be smiling if Helen Hunt pulls off the upset.

Best Actor• Bradley Cooper, Silver Linings Playbook• Daniel Day-Lewis, Lincoln• Hugh Jackman, Les Misérables• Joaquin Phoenix, The Master• Denzel Washington, FlightPrediction: Daniel Day-LewisPreference: Bradley Cooper

Daniel Day-Lewis has picked up a stagger-ing 32 awards for Lincoln; after Sunday it will be 33. Bradley Cooper settles for more respect as an actor.

Best Actress• Jessica Chastain, Zero Dark Thirty• Jennifer Lawrence, Silver Linings Playbook• Emmanuelle Riva, Amour• Quvenzhane Wallis, Beasts of the Southern Wild• Naomi Watts, The ImpossiblePrediction: Jennifer LawrencePreference: Jennifer Lawrence

Despite the historic possibilities with the oldest and youngest nominees ever in this category, the race comes down to rising stars Jennifer Lawrence and Jessica Chastain. The Zero Dark Thirty torture controversy gives the edge to Lawrence.

Best Director• Michael Haneke, Amour• Ang Lee, Life of Pi• David O. Russell, Silver Linings Playbook• Steven Spielberg, Lincoln• Benh Zeitlin, Beasts of the Southern WildPrediction: Steven SpielbergPreference: David O. Russell

This category is a joke and everybody knows it. Kathryn Bigelow and Ben Affleck got shaft-ed and nobody has a clue how it happened. From these five nominees the edge goes to Spielberg.

The Oscar Derby: Best Picture• Amour• Argo• Beasts of the Southern Wild• Djanjo Unchained• Les Misérables• Life of Pi• Lincoln• Silver Linings Playbook• Zero Dark ThirtyPrediction: ArgoPreference: Silver Linings Playbook

The three films with the most acclaim are Lincoln, Argo and Silver Linings Playbook. With the recent surge of Argo, and the desire to honor Affleck, his film passed Lincoln as the favorite, despite the latter’s 12 nominations.

Quick Picks: In the rest of the catego-ries, the predicted winners are: Animated Film, Frankenweenie; Foreign Language Film, Amour; Cinematography, Life of Pi; Costume Design, Les Misérables; Documentary Feature, The Gatekeepers; Documentary Short, Redemption; Film Editing, Argo; Makeup, The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey; Music Score, Lincoln; Original Song, “Skyfall”; Production Design, Les Misérables; Animated Short, Adam and Dog; Live Action Short, Curfew; Adapted Screenplay, Argo, Chris Terrio; Original Screenplay, Michael Haneke, Amour; Sound Editing, Argo; Sound Mixing, Argo; Visual Effects, Life of Pi. n
