Whether for painted steel or molded polyethylene

drums, our facestocks have been chosen for their

ability to withstand harsh environments and outdoor

exposures. In fact, some of our drum portfolio

facestocks have passed BS 5609 Section 2 and

3 Marine Immersion label testing, including a three-

month exposure to saltwater, as part of International

Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG certifi cation).

Our Drum Portfolio facestocks are combined with our

best-in-class adhesives to offer needed versatility.

The adhesive must also wet-out quickly to become

permanent, remaining highly durable over a drum’s

long-term exposure to the elements.

Easing the BS 5609 Certifi cation ProcessTwo certifi cations are important to converters who are

helping clients adhere to GHS standards: BS 5609 Section

2 and 3. Section 2 certifi cation deals with the actual label

materials. Our Drum Portfolio features BS 5609 Section

2-certifi ed facestock, liners and adhesives. Meanwhile,

various combinations of printers, ribbons and inks must be

certifi ed under BS 5609 Section 3. To make this process

easier for converters and end users, Avery Dennison now

offers both BS 5609 Section 2 and 3 certifi cation.

Our certifi cation library contains a multitude of certifi ed

materials, printers, ribbons and ink combinations. The

portfolio matrix allows converters and end users to check

various printing methods and descriptions at a glance.

Our laboratory, which is certifi ed for BS 5609: 1986 by

Underwriters Laboratory (UL®), helps you alleviate major

bottlenecks for BS 5609 testing such as long waits and

high prices. Typical testing can range from $2,000 - $4,000,

and can take months to complete. But the Avery Dennison

testing lab can quickly certify for Section 2 and Section 3 at

no cost to you.

If you are already certifi ed under Section 2, Section 3

certifi cation can typically be achieved in under a month.

But if you need both certifi cations, we can facilitate them

concurrently, thus helping you achieve certifi cation within two

to three months.

BS 5609 Section three

BS 5609 (British Standard 5609)BS 5609 establishes specifications and test methods to determine whether labels will perform under marine conditions.

The four-part standard includes two technical sections

> Section two covers the base material of the pressure-sensitive, adhesive-coated label.

> Section three covers the final printed labels, including inks and ribbons applied to materials that were certified in Section two. Printed labels are tested for print key effectiveness, legibility, print permanence, resistance to abrasion and weathering from light, salt spray and sand.

Certification Service

Typically, the regulatory burden of Section three falls on label converters, who are responsible for certifying the printing systems, inks and ribbons printed on Section-two certified base materials. To simplify the BS 5609 certification process for converters, Avery Dennison offers Section three testing and certification. Process

> Select Avery Dennison BS 5609 Section two certified materials (Marine Test)

> Print labels with all applicable inks, ribbons and varnishes » Note: it is mandatory to print black and red inks, additional colours can be added

» Print layout: original GHS label design or sample label (request via sales representative)

> Fill in “BS 5609 Section three request form” > Send 20 labels and the completed form to the responsible Product Manager, Hans Eichenwald (address on next page).

> Labels are tested in the Avery Dennison laboratory (duration 4 - 6 weeks)

> Certificate is sent to the converter

BS 5609 certification of labels is required to meet GHS (Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals) and IMDG (International Maritime Dangerous Goods) regulations, in case chemicals are shipped overseas.
