2 DAVID THORNTON The problems of landscape painting are infinite, especially when one is trying to impose the strictures of an individual way of seeing. My interest is with light, its components and the way light, colour and tone intertwine. Realism is ephemeral and dependent on culture and time, but subjective interpretation is of the individual and my primary driver. Of course, drawing and a determined attitude towards maintaining the discipline of drawing should never be forgotten. 2 MARGARET THORNTON It was exciting to discover the intricacies and reactions of the various techniques in silk painting. There are so many ways to manipulate the vibrant colours. I learn through persistence and experimentation and the results are constantly satisfying and new. Now the silk fibres are leading me in another direction and silk paper-making is adding a new dimension. Naturally being surrounded by trees in the hills I had to include some eco dyeing into the equation. Finding ways to combine these elements is both my challenge and stimulus. 4 PENNY MADDISON is an award winning artist specializing in Watercolour, teaching the subject and tutoring overseas and local painting tours. She has held four solo exhibitions and shared in many others with her work in collections here and overseas. Her love of watercolour has seen her deeply involved with The Watercolour Society of W.A. of which she is a Fellow. 10 SALLY EDMONDS. After a successfulcareer in design and reprographics in the UK print industry, Sally decided tobecome a full time professional artist in 2014. Her work reflects a passion forwildlife, especially birds. Using pastel, colour pencil, watercolours andoccasionally acrylics Sally leans

towards realism but deliberately veersaway from the more traditional style of

portraying wildlife preferring to use a bolderstyle with visible marks, large size, negativespace, dramatic light and exaggerated colour. She has won multiple awards for her work.

Sally supports local wildlife conservation centres and is also involved with The Military Arts Programme which gives free art classes to veterans andserving military personnel seeking to support the mental health of itsparticipants. 11 KARIN HOTCHKINArtist and Art Educator who has developed an appreciation for Naive Art aftermany years of study/teaching and being exposed to all aspects of Art. Duringthis time I explored and experimented with this whimsical and charming formof Art and hence developed my own Naive style. I am visually stimulated by thenatural beauty that surrounds me and form a relationship with my immediateenvironment, the land, homes, nature, animals, plants and the landscape. My Art can also be viewed as Abstract Expressionism with a strong focus onpattern, shape, colour, design and composition, which is often executed in aplayful way with a sense of joy. I make a conscious effort to not formalise mywork but rather stylise it and engage my inner child.

13 JOHANNA LARKINPredominantly focusing on wildlife and botanicals/nature, this self-taught artist has a passionfor her craft which is evidentin the beautiful artwork sheconsistently produces. Johanna has forged asuccessful career in the arts, having sold herartwork across 6 countries. Johanna says thatfor her painting is about identifying withsomething beautiful and recreating/capturing itwhether it be realism, impressionist, pastels, pencils, acrylics, or inks. Following her heart and allowingherself to experiment with different mediums andsubject matter has resulted in an array of beautifulartwork. Johanna sells prints and originals of her workas well as running a framing/printing business fromher studio and can be contacted on 0448 812 070 [email protected]

16 GAIL DOUST KEIRLE grew up on herfamily farm near Manjimup, before spendingher adult life in suburban Perth. In 2005 shemoved to Lesmurdie, and again connected tothe Jarrah and Marri forests which now inspireher to explore their beauty in watercolours. When Gail retired from full time work in 2008,she purchased a campervan to begin travellingthrough and around our amazing country.Instead of taking photos she began paintinginstead, learning to stop and really sink into

her surroundings. (And meet fellow travellers fromall over the world.) Gail’s paintings are notbotanical as such…they are interpretations ofwhat she sees….Her insights and influencescome during the many hours of wandering, observing and collecting. And many hours ofmeditating, sitting in, and being in awe of ourwonderful forests, deserts and waterways.Favourite inspirations come from, honkynuts, bark, leaves, bird’s nests, lichens, mushrooms and fungi. She is continuallylearning to be in tune with how things workas she pokes around and explores thedetails, colours, hues, shadows and the dancewithin the painting she is doing. What a way tocelebrate the wonders of our biodiversity! Whileconnecting to the flow and rhythm of seasons, shelinks into nature and place and thus re-creates hersense of belonging to our earth. Painting has become a large part of her lifeand passion… Gail says she wants her art always to be something that: Touches… Moves… and… InspiresGail enjoys sharing her passion with the many visitors to her studio andexhibitions. 7 HAYWARD STUDIO George Hayward studied Artand Design first at Cambridgeand later at Chelmsford in theUK. He pursued his ambition tobe a full time painter and alsoworked in ceramics on the Isle ofWight before emigrating toAustralia. Now fortunate to havehis own purpose built rammedearth studio in Kalamunda he isable to combine his own painting time with that of running “just paint” artclasses. His preference is acrylic although he also works in oils and pastel. With an impatient and spontaneous style, acrylics allow him the freedom herequires. Nature and landscape have always been a major influence in hiswork. However, he paints whatever stirs his emotions, especially those thatrise from deep within. Helen Hayward loves to paint, loves the process ofpainting and keenly continues to explore techniques which enable her toexpress feelings and emotions which arise from an intense connection withnature and the landscape. www.haywardstudio.com

15 SARAH KEIRLESarah is a ceramicist born in the Cotswolds, England and studied in Stoke-on-Trent, the heart of the English ceramic industry. She now lives and works in Lesmurdie, and specialises in hand-built ceramic pieces using slab, coil and pinching techniques fired to stoneware temperature. Recent sculptural pieces depicting native Australian seedpods havepredominantly been raku fired for added effect. Sarah also produces a ceramic jewellery range utilising hand-made ceramic beads produced and decorated by her to produce one-of-a-kind statement pieces. More examples of Sarah’s work can be viewed at: Instagram@sarahkeirle
