INTRODUCTION
Anumberofombustible5 5 - m r abagchargeassembliesweremanufacturedbybothmoldedfiberandspiral-wrappingprocesses.heseassemblieswererequiredbyARRAPCOMfo revaluationofrigidcombustiblechargesoncontainersasreplace-mentsornon-rigidbagchargescurrentlyinusefo rlargecaliberartillery.Useofarigidchargehasthepotentialforincreasingweaponrateoffirebyallowingautomaticloadinginadditiontoresidueeliminationandreductionintubeerosion.
Th econtractcopeofWorkwithmodificationconsistedofninetaskswithsubtasksnvolvinghreeasichargessembliesonsistingfariationsffourteencomponents,designandfabricationoffourtoolingsets,andastudyofaethodfmprovingetentionofhehargeuringeatingnheweaponbreech.hefivebasicformulacompositionsdesignatedbytheARRADCOMprojectengineerconsistedofvariationsinnitrocellulose,esins,andtalc.etweenJuly1980andJuly1982,1850chargeassemblieswereproducedbythemoldedandspiral-wrappingprocesses.

ProcessDescription
Thecurrentstate-of-the-artfo rmoldingofhighdensity,combustibleord-nanceitemsevolvedfromvariousslurrypreformandpressingtechniquesthatwereemployedduringthepastcenturyinth emanufactureofthreedimensionalshapesfromwoodcellulosefibers.asically,I tIsacommercialartformakinghollowwaresofapaperboard-typecomposition.
Th epresent,controlledconceptemployedbyArmtecinklnhigh-density,combustibleordnanceitemssdescribedinth efollowingsections.hemethoddescribedwasemployedtomanufacturethespacerandsleevesapplicabletuthisreport(fig.I).

Preformsar emadeinthefeltingtankbyvacuumaccretionofthefibersontoaperforatedandscreenedshape(feltingdie)havingexteriordimensionscompara-bletotheconfigurationofth eopensleeve.heperforatedshapeIsaffixedtoaminlfold,whichi sconnectedCoavacuumsource.
ThefeltingdieisImmersedmechanicallyintothefeltingtank,andvacuumforcelaapplied. Th elengthofImmersiontimeplusvacuumdictatesth eamount

Whenthepreform,orfelt,isremovedfromthefeltingdie,i tisasoggy,looselywovenratrix(approximately60%water)withawallthickness31/ 2timesgreaterthanthefinishedparttobemolded.
Th efeltingtankisrectangular.heslurryinputisfromthebottomcenterwitharectangularbafflecountedtogivea1/4-inchopeningorslotbetweenthebaffleandthetankbottom,thusdiffusinganequalamountofslurryinaildi-rections.hefeltingtanki sallowedtooverflowequallyoveraweiran dintoareturntroughonallfoursides.hisiedesignedogivehebestpossibledistributionoftheslurrymixturewithinthefeltingtank.Molding

Standardcommercialpapermakingequipmentisusedtomanufacturenitrocellu-lose(NC)paperrollsoftherequiredformula.herollsofNCpaperar eplacedonacommercialspiralcore-windingmachinewhichiscapableofproducingtubinginavarietyofdiameters,lengths,andlaminates.hapedpartsfortubes(bod-ie sandrings)ofappropriatesize*canthenbeproduced.heonedrawbacktothisprocessi sits . nit at, ontotubularcomponents.

Tasksdifferedinproductdesign(fig,2);formula(table2);andcomponentcomposition(table3).hesedifferenceswereintroducedtoevaluatetheiref-fectswithrespecttoresidue,tubewear,andperformancecharacteristicsduringfiring.
Twenty-fourformulabatchesweremadetoprovideforfeltingandmoldingofrequiredcomponents.osignificantbatching,felting,ormoldingproblemswereencountered.lightlyhigheroff-pressmoldedpartweightsanddensitieswereencounteredoncomponentscontainingtalc,aswasexpectedduetotherelativelyhighspecificgravityofthetalc.
AllcomponentsmoldedforGroupAwerela the-trimmedt odi-nensionwithspe-ciallydesignedrimmandrels.omponentswereassembledbyhandintochargeassemblyconfigurationusingacetoneasabondingagent.llcomponentswerechemicallyanalyzed(table4) .omponentswereinspectedforweightMttdimen-sionrioroassembly,swerethefinalchargeassemblies.esultsofhedimensionalnspectionar eshownntable.osignificantdeviationswerenoted.

TasksV,VIZandXrequireddesigningandmanufacturingtwolongchargessimiliartothoseinCroupAbutreplacingthemoldedcasesidewallswithtubesspiralwrappedwithNCpaper.heresultantdesigns(fig,3 )werea38.5-inchand0.0-inchchargessemblies.hesehargesredenticalroadesignstandpoint,withtheexceptionofoveralllength,andconsistofaspiralwrappedtubecutoength,woringscu tfromspiralwrappedmaterial,amoldedbaseignitercontainer,twomoldedbasecaps,andamoldedretainer*
TheNCpaperwasmanufacturedbytheHertyFoundation,Savannah,CA.,recog-nizedexpert*Inthisfield.piralwrappingofthepaperwasperformedbytheSunocoCorp.ofHartsviile,SouthCarolina,specialistsinspiraltubemanufac-ture.
HawmaterialstoproducetherequiredMCpaperweresuppliedbyArmtectoHertyoundation,longwithormulationnstructionstables ^nd).hepaperwasmanufacturedwithstandardpaper-makingequipment.heonlydifficultywahenterjectionfalcnormulaMF-2ndunevendistributionofdi-phenvlamine(HPA)onthefirstbatchonly.hepaperwasproduced,calenderedtothicknessof0.02^-inchto0.027-i^ch,andforwardedtoSunocofortubemanufac-ture.
AtSunocothepaperinrollswasslittowidthsof5inchesnd1/ 3inchesforuseontheirspiral-windingmachine, Sunocodesigned-and-builtieceof

equipment.ultiplerollsofheslitpaperar efedundertensionthroughanadhesiveapplicatorontoarevolvingmandrel.hestripmaterialisfedonabias,itheachubsequentrapcrossingtheseamofthepreviouswrap,husprovidingthespiraltubeconfiguration.hetubingi sautomaticallyforwardedonthemandreltoacut-offbladewherei ti scuttolength.hepapeiwaswoundonamandrelproducinga6-inch-dlametertubeatawindingsneedof2 7linearfeetofstripmaterialpe rminutetoproduce7. 6linearfeetot4-plytubingpe rminute.
SunocousedadhesiveGiM7950(aSunocoproduct)Ininitialwindingruns.Insomenstances,heresultingtubingappearedweakanddelaminated.fterconsultationwithArmtecpersonnel,SunocosubstitutedRhoplexN-495andRhoplexLC-45(RohmandHaasproducts)fortheadhesiveintheremainderoftheproduc-tion.ufficienttubingwasthenproducedbySunocoanddeliveredtoArmtecfortheequiredpiral-wrappedodiesndings.IthouldbenotedhatsomefiringtestresiduewassubsequentlytracedtocasesInwhichth eQ M7050adhe-sivehadbeenused.)
Thecartridgecasesidewallassembliesutilizingthespiralwraptubemate-rialsroducedyheore-windingachineeflectedowerensitiesndstrengthcharacteristicsthanthemoldedsidewrlls.saresult,onInstructionoftheARRADCOMprojectengineer,halfofthespiral-wrappedcaseswereimpreg-natedwithatwo-componentPolyurethaneresinforcomparativetestingwiththeirunlmpregnatedcounterparts.tsbasicallyapolyoi-dl-lsocyanatecarriedinxvienewithatwo-stagecure.ick-upofresinsolidsonthe1 5 5 - r a mcaseswaslot.ubsequentoughhandlingtestsevealednodelaminationonanyofhespiral-wrappedparts.
Concurrentlywiththemanufactureofthetubingforthespiral-wrappedcom-ponents,Armtecprocuredthetooling(table5 )andproducedthemoldedcomponentstocompletetheassembliesrequiredbythesetasks.ivebatchesmadetothetwodifferentformulationswererequiredtoproducetherequiredmoldedcomponents.Partswerefelted,molded,andlathe-trimmedtodimensionusingspecialtooling(table).omponentswerehand-assembledwithMR21adhesive.llcomponentsw e r *hemical vnalyzedtable4).omponentswereinspectedforweightnA dimensionpriort^ssembly,aswerefinalhargeassemblies.esultsofthedimensionalnspection*rshownntable.osignificanteviationswerenoted.

Si xformulabatchesweremadetoprovideforfeltingandmoldingofrequiredcomponents(tables2and3).trialrunusingDOW241resinprovedunsuccess-ful.fterconsultationwiththeARRADCOMprojectengineer,ArmtecreplacedDow241resinwithMarbon1600andDurolok.om edifficultywasobservedwithbatchfoamingwhentheMarbon1600resinwasusedlsonotedwaslowertalcrecovery,perhapsasaresultofthefoaming.
Toolingtoproducehemodularchargeswasabricatedbymodificationofexistingtooling(table1).artswerefelted,molded,andtrimmedtolength.Nosignificantifficultieswerenoteddespitehethin(0.80Inch)untaperedsldewalls.llcomponentswerechemicallyanalyzed(table4) .omponentswereInspectedforweightanddimensionpriortoassembly,aswerefinalchargeassem-blies.esultsofthedimensionalinspectionareshownintable7 .osignifi-cantdeviationswerenoted.

TaskI Irequiredthestudyanddertlgnofameansofimprovingth eretentioncapabilityofachargewhenInsertedintothechamberofthegun.hespecificrequirementwastoincreasethediameter(from6.30inchesto6.80inches).heheightoftheretentionsectionIs0.85inch.hismodificationwillJiccommcJatethechamberdesignofthe155-mmgun.
Twodesignapproacheswereevaluated:nadd-onringthatwouldhebondedtotheassembledchargeandamoldedbaseincorporatingalargerdiametercapof6.80inch.
Thedeaofnadd-onsectionwasdiscardedearlyInthedesignstudy-primarilybecauseofthepossibilityofunburnedresiduethatwouldbecausedbyth ethickcrosssectionatth eentrancebaseendofthecharge*necausethebondedsect I o . appearedtobemorereliable.
Therecommendedconfiguration(fig.5)itconsideredthemostpracticalandcosteffective.nInserti sincorporatedinthemoldingdie(figs.6and7 )togiveeitherconfigurationinasinglemoldingoperation.iththeincorporationofeithermoidinsert,th edesiredbodysectionconfigurationcaneasilybepro-duced.heconcepthasbeenprovenworkable.henecessaryprovisionshavebeenincorporatedinthetooling M thetoolingisavailableforutilization.Sumnarv
