Automation—Israel

Business Environment Automation is a company that provides IT services to about 250 municipalities in Israel. Automation provides three types of IT services:

1. HR and Salary System: Provides HR and salary services to municipalities’ employees. This system runs on three mainframe systems using ADABAS/Natural and ADABAS/COBOL.

2. Finance System: Provides financial services to the municipalities. This system runs on a mainframe system and also on Solaris, using ADABAS/Natural.

3. Billing System: Provides billing services to the municipalities. This system runs on mainframe and Solaris systems, using ADABAS/Natural.

Business Need Automation wanted to save costs and close its three mainframes within two years. They also wanted to save costs by eliminating the ADABAS/Natural maintenance expenses. They wanted to move all three applications to work on Unix and Windows systems, using either Oracle or SQL Server databases.

They also wanted to improve the services they provide to their clients, in order to keep them with Automation and avoid competition. Moving to Java on an open system would allow them to add much more sophisticated services.

Source and Target Environments

Business Environment GDC is a distribution and logistics company in home entertainment and was founded in 1969. GDC had its core, mission-critical system running on mainframe/MVS with external access for resells and consumers as well as the producers of the goods. The distribution market is very competitive and key issues such as quality, speed, and costs are essential for success.

Business Need Cost reduction was needed to stay competitive while keeping the quality and speed that was ensured by the in-house developed mainframe applications. GDC therefore wanted to move their applications forward to a new and more open technology and save costs on licenses and operating costs to their mainframe system.

APH—Venezuela

Business Environment APH is a software house that develops and sells software packages for banking in South America.

Business Need APH would like to sell one of its internal packages to a large number of banks. This package is based on ADABAS/Natural; for this reason, any bank that purchases this package must purchase an ADABAS/Natural license as well. This requirement makes the package costs very high. In order to reduce costs for the final customer, APH decided to migrate this package to Java which does not require any special licensing.

Source and Target Environments

Source System

Mainframe/MVS with

• 2,500 ADABAS/Natural programs

• 100 ADABAS views

Business Need Coates Hire wanted to save costs by closing their mainframe within one year. They also wanted to save costs by eliminating the maintenance expenses related to Software AG products.

Coates Hire also wanted to improve the services they provide to their end users, as the current system is too slow, with response times of up to few minutes.

Another need was to streamline their IT shop by using a unique database: Oracle, and unique language: Java, for all their IT systems.

Leumi Bank—Israel

Business Environment Leumi bank is the second largest bank in Israel. The bank is using ADABAS/Natural for their main banking applications and all the online activities between the bank and its branches are performed by Natural applications.

Business Need The bank would like to migrate its ADABAS/Natural applications to DB2/Java in order to reduce the costs involved in maintenance of the ADABAS/Natural software. The cost reduction would result from saving the maintenance cost to Software AG, and by using the IBM zAAP processor that runs Java loads and reduces the number of MIPS.

Also the bank would like to improve it service to its customers, and moving to a modern environment and relational database would enable that.

Source and Target Environments

Source System Mainframe/MVS with:

• 60 ADABAS/Natural applications

• 7,000,000 lines of code

Target System

Mainframe z/OS system with:

• WebSphere application server supporting J2EE

Current Status BluePhoenix has successfully completed a pilot and currently negotiating the project start. The pilot included conversion of one of the bank’s applications to Java/J2EE. Since the bank cannot migrate all 60 applications at once, but would like to do it in stages, the pilot also demonstrated coexistence capabilities in which:

• Some of the ADABAS tables were migrated to DB2 and some remained in ADABAS. The migrated Java application is working with both DB2 and ADABAS.

• The migrated Java application is interfacing with other nonmigrated Natural applications.

• The migrated Java application is invoking COBOL and Assembler routines that were not migrated to Java.

KAS Bank—Netherlands

Business Environment KAS bank is an investment bank with branches in The Netherlands and the UK. The bank is using ADABAS/Natural with their main banking applications.

Business Need The bank would like to migrate its ADABAS/Natural applications to C#/.NET environment in order to reduce the costs involved in maintenance of the ADABAS/Natural software and eliminate mainframe costs. Also the bank would like to improve service to its customers, and moving to a modern environment and relational database will enable that.

Source and Target Environments

Source System Mainframe/MVS

• ~ 15 ADABAS/Natural applications

• ~ 3,000,000 lines of code

Target System Windows system with:

• .NET

• Application migrated to C#/ASPX

• SQL Server database

• JCL migrated to Windows scripts

Current Status BluePhoenix has successfully completed the migration of one of the applications, which is ready for production. As the bank cannot migrate all 15 applications at one time, but would like to do it in stages, the migration also demonstrated coexistence capabilities in which:

• Some of the ADABAS tables were migrated to SQL Server and some remained in ADABAS. The migrated C# application is working with both SQL Server and ADABAS.

• The migrated C# application is interfacing with other nonmigrated Natural applications.

Department of Energy—USA

Business Environment The US Department of Energy’s primary mission is to advance the national, economic, and energy security of the United States. The Energy Information Administration (EIA) is the section of the US Department of Energy providing statistics, data, and analysis of resources, supply, production, and consumption for all energy sources. The applications that are the subject of this project are used to collect and process data related to oil and gas resources.

Business Need EIA has maintained three major oil and gas applications for over 20 years. The applications comprise a number of differing and, in several instances, proprietary technologies—principally Software AG’s ADABAS and Natural. In recent years, EIA has found it difficult to maintain these legacy applications due to a scarcity of programming resources, and the increased costs associated with the aging technology. However, the business rules at the core of the technology provide effective support to the organization. EIA determined that it would be cost effective to engage BluePhoenix to migrate the legacy code and data to the more modern Java and Oracle technologies. Their desire was to position the applications for future growth and to leverage current and emerging technologies.

Source and Target Environments

Source System IBM OS/390 with:

• ADABAS and VSAM databases

• Written in Assembler, COBOL, Easytrieve, FORTRAN, JCL, Natural, and PL/I

Target System Linux platform with:

• Oracle database

• Written in Java

• JCL migrated to KShell

Current Status Upon completion of a Global Assessment and Detailed Analysis of EIA’s applications, culminating in a final report and recommendations, EIA engaged BluePhoenix to perform the migration of legacy applications and databases to the new technologies. Code and data migration activities are well underway. The project is on time and within the budget projections, with completion planned for early 2010.

Source and Target Environments

Source System • Natural/DB2 batch and online programs running on IBM mainframe OS/390

Target Environment • Natural migrated to pseudo-conversational COBOL/CICS programs

• DB2 remained on the system

Current Status This project was completed successfully and the application is now in production. The project was completed whilst working alongside subcontractor MOST Technologies.
