Plarn Mats Project Activity Plan

2nd Annual Wisconsin 4-H Statewide Service Learning Project According to EarthDay.org, about one trillion single-use plastic bags are used every day in the U.S. We’ve created a service project to put plastic bags to good use and help those in our community who are experiencing homelessness.

Youth involved in the Plarn Mats project will learn how to create plastic yarn (plarn) from bags, and then crochet those bags into mats. The mats will be donated to local organizations. The full activity plan includes an overview of the whole project as well as separate instructions for different parts of the project: Making decisions about your plarn mats project Collecting and sorting bags Cutting plastic bags into loops Making plastic loops into plarn Crocheting the plarn mat Donating the plarn or plarn mats Click the activity plan button to complete a short form and access the full Plarn Mats Service Learn-ing Project activity plan. Click the video buttons on this page to watch tutorials related to the project. The videos fea-ture Lily, 4-H youth leader and lead author of the activity plan. Later, use the Project Donation Survey button to let us know how much plarn or how many mats your group donated.

4-H Visits BREATHE By Greta Romberg Royal Wranglers

We were invited to Wild Rose Ranch on March 31, 2021 to learn about the BREATHE program. I have been working at BREATHE for the past 2 years and before that, I volunteered there for about 2 years. Chris Singer, owner of BREATHE, spent about 90 minutes telling us about what her program is about. We toured the stable, saw the horses and equipment, and watched a short video describing the program. BREATHE stands for Baraboo River Equine Assisted THErapies. From their website, here is a description: “BREATHE is a Wisconsin 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, providing equine-related activities for therapeu-tic purposes, (collectively known as Equine-Assisted Activities and Therapies, or EAAT). EAAT helps peo-ple from all backgrounds and all walks of life in a variety of ways, including increasing strength and flexibil-ity, improving motor skills, promoting speech and cognitive reasoning, and building relationships and social skills. BREATHE is a member of the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, International (PATH). Our instructors are PATH-certified.” Chris, her husband Ed, and many volunteers serve children and adults. People who have autism, cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome, or other difficulties can benefit from riding a horse. Some of these people can’t play other sports, but with help, they can ride a horse! Even people in wheelchairs can be helped onto a horse! On average, there are about 40 volunteers who help each season with the program. This includes people who take care of the horses, many who assist with individual lessons, and some who help with fund-raising. Fundraising is an important part of this non-profit organization. Each year there are some smaller and a couple of larger fundraisers, like a big Hoedown each fall and the Night at the Races each spring. People can also sponsor a horse if they are able. Having volunteers and doing fundraisers helps with costs. Each year the horses need grain, vet care, and sometimes other special things, like massage therapy! Plus, Chris uses the money to purchase needed items that help the riders, like special reins and saddles. BREATHE has 12 horses right now. Some are seasoned therapy horses, meaning they are calm, don’t mind being led around, and don’t mind different riders. Some of the horses are being trained more. The horses are always “tested” first to be sure they are good with children and all kinds of people. During a therapy riding lesson, there is usually one person who leads the horse and 2 people who walk on each side of the horse to be sure the rider is stable. Chris will instruct on what to do. Over time, the riders learn to give their horses basic commands, gaining confidence and building muscle strength! Chris sets up

games and activities the riders can do on horseback, like dropping balls in buckets or rings, turning around a barrel, color-matching, grabbing flags, weaving around cones, walking over poles, play-ing Simon Says and Red Light Green Light. Some days are “trail ride” days outside of the arena. BREATHE will be moving to a new loca-tion between Baraboo and the Lake Del-ton this spring. The new location will pro-vide more pasture space and an indoor arena, so lessons can happen all year long! Wild Rose Ranch in Baraboo has been very generous in letting the pro-gram reside there for the past several years. Thank you to Chris and Wild Rose Ranch for sharing an evening with us!
