Congregation KTI Launches Paver Project

This is a great opportunity to make your mark at KTI!

The KTI Paver Project will use personalized engraved pavers to create a patio to the right of the front door of the main building at KTI. Benches will be placed next to the patio for

rest and introspection. “We want to give our congregants and school families the opportunity to help beautify KTI, create a relaxing outdoor space and contribute to KTI’s

future. I know that those who buy pavers will get a kick out of seeing the names of their family members every time they visit KTI,” said Jessica Berkowitz who initiated this

project.

We know how important it is to commemorate life cycle events and to honor loved ones. This project is a perfect way to do that!

The pavers come in two sizes — 4”x8” and 8”x8”. The pavers are shaped like bricks but

are light in color to complement KTI's facade. Pavers can be used to remember loved ones, celebrate bar or bat mitzvahs, weddings, confirmations, births, baby namings,

graduations and other life cycle events. The smaller pavers are $118 and the larger pavers are $180 each.

By purchasing pavers, you will be supporting KTI now and you will be part of its future.

We are also happy to consider donations of shrubbery to improve the setting for our patio.

From the Rabbi

On Shabbat HaChodesh, the Shabbat on or immediately preceding the month of Nisan – the month in which we celebrate Passover, we read a special maftir portion from the Torah (Exodus12:1-20). This year, Shabbat HaChodesh falls on April 9, and it is also Rosh Chodesh Nisan. The maftir contains a description of Passover, and it is a good reminder that Passover is six weeks away (the first seder is Friday night, April 22), and it is time to begin to prepare. I am struck by the beginning of the maftir reading. God says to Moses, “Speak to the whole community of Israel and say that on the tenth of this month each of them shall take a lamb to a family, a lamb to a household. But if the household is too small for a lamb, let him share one with a neighbor who dwells nearby.” In other words, no need to do this alone – share with your neighbor, invite your friends to share this ritual meal. We do this at our seders. The seder is a time to invite guests or to be a guest, to share a ritual meal with others – to connect, to create history, and to make sure that everyone has a place to go and enough to eat. At the beginning of the seder we say the words, “Kol dichfin yeitei v’yeichol - Let all who are hungry, come and eat. Let all who are in need, come and share the Pesach meal.” It is a beautiful invitation, but not one that necessarily includes an expectation of an RSVP. However, there are plenty of ways to help those who need something to eat. As we begin to clean our pantries to prepare for Pesach, please consider donating unopened food to one of the local soup kitchens or food pantries. As part of our annual Purim-to-Pesach food drive, there will be bins around KTI where you may leave your donations. Please remember to bring a "pasta grogger" to the Purim Carnival and/or the Megillah reading. The unopened boxes of pasta, which make enough noise to drown out Haman's name, will be donated to the soup kitchen at St. Peter's Episcopal Church. In addition, there is a Passover tradition of giving Maot Chittim – literally “money for wheat” or money for those who need help buying matza for the holiday. In our community, we have expanded Maot Chittim to include donations to feed the hungry, whether they need matza or food in general. In fact, when you add your name to the list for selling hametz, your donation will be given to Mazon – the Jewish Response to Hunger, which feeds hungry people around the United States. An estimated 200,000 people in Westchester County go hungry. 53% of students at Port Chester High School are eligible for free or reduced priced lunch. According to worldhunger.org, "In 2014, 14.0 percent of households (17.5 million households, approximately one in seven), were food insecure. Children were food insecure at times during the year in 9.4 percent of households with children. These 3.7 million households were unable at times during the year to provide adequate, nutritious food for their children." It is not enough for us to simply utter the word “kol dichfin yeitei v’yeichol – Let all who are hungry, come and eat” – we must take action to truly feed those who are hungry. Please join me in taking action to feed the hungry in our local community and around the country, so that at the seder, we will truly be able to say, “hashata avedei, leshanah haba’ah b’nei chorin – this year we are slaves, next year we will be free people.” B'yedidut (in friendship), Rabbi Jaymee M. we sent sufganiyot (jelly donuts) to more than 2,700 soldiers.

themselves on the line in order to defend Israel.

Neshama Body and Soul combines movement and prayer. Our intention is to connect our

physical and spiritual selves through strength-training, mobility, core work, and prayer. In

using both exercise and themes from Jewish liturgy, we dedicate ourselves as whole beings -

body, mind, and spirit.

Neshama Body and Soul is open to all regardless of age, gender, or religious background, and is

led by Rabbi Jaymee Alpert and Fernando Martinez (trainer).

President’s Message

Dear Friends:

In recent years, KTI has taken several measures to increase security in our buildings and on our grounds. This past year the Board of Trustees formed a KTI Security Committee, chaired by Dr. David Berman. David and the Security Committee are active participants on the UJA/Federation Westchester Council and regularly consult with the Port Chester Police Department. As a result of these discussions, the PCPD has increased their patrols of our grounds and has been given permission to use our grounds as a post.

Recent current events serve as a reminder that schools and houses of worship are often targets for those looking to do harm to the innocent. We must be extremely vigilant. To this end, KTI has contracted with a professional security firm to provide on-premises security whenever classes are in session, during school programs, Shabbat services, holidays, and special events. As has been our policy, the doors to the Gantz Building will continue to be locked at all times.

With the decision to engage a professional security service comes unanticipated and presently unbudgeted expenses. The cost to KTI for this expanded security is expected to be in excess of $75,000 per year.

Until the end of the present school year, these costs will be paid in part by a security surcharge of $180 per child in our Early Childhood Program and Religious School, and in part from our operating funds. This approach is similar to that taken by other synagogues throughout Westchester. This will provide us with the necessary time to determine how we will fund this expense in the future. Your contributions and tax deductible donations are, as always, greatly appreciated.

The safety and security of our students, congregants, clergy, staff, and guests are of utmost importance to us. The Board of Trustees with the guidance of security professionals and our Security Committee has and will continue to assess our security needs and plan.

As always, the Board of Trustees and I welcome your feedback and we are available to discuss this and any other matter of concern you may have.

As most of you know by now, Andrew, Sophie, and I welcomed our new baby boy, Jack Marshall Sklar, into the world this past November. I wanted to take this opportunity to express our overwhelming sense of joy and gratitude for welcoming our son into such a wonderful community. What an amazing outpouring of love we have received! His bris was on a beautiful Sunday morning, so we were very glad to be able to see many KTI members there, along with our family and friends. We were already enjoying raising our daughter Sophie here, and we are so glad to be able to introduce Jack to Jewish life through the warmth of KTI. K.T.I. Early Childhood Program It’s hard to believe it is already March 2016! It seems as though we were just celebrating Hanukkah and the New Year a moment ago. The ECP has been very busy since our last update. School reopened on January 4th and the action began immediately. Several of the classes came back to school in furry slippers and comfy PJ’s to have a fun pajama day! Others celebrated a bit later in the month. Children enjoyed a delicious “breakfast” of pancakes and waffles for snack. They played games and read “bedtime” stories. For winter the children are learning about the season and the many exciting things that happen when the temperature drops: ice, snow and how it melts, hibernation, migration, and animals in winter. The school had an especially fun time celebrating a “Bear Day.” Classes gathered in the sanctuary ballroom and played games, read stories, sang with Tina and had yummy snacks. In January we also celebrated Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Though our school teaches tolerance and understanding of all people every day, on this holiday we make a special point of emphasizing how important it is to accept and enjoy the differences in people. The children made projects like dream-catchers, hands of many colors and peace plates to help them understand this message. We also had a big turnout for our New Year Tot Shabbat on January 22nd. It was wonderful to see the younger religious school students come too. Please come and join us for our next Tot Shabbat on March 11th. The holiday of Tu B’Shevat, New Year for the trees, came at the end of the January. In the classrooms children were taught how important trees are for us and the environment through stories and fun projects. They made their own trees and thought about what kind of tree they would be! We also celebrated Tu B’Shevat with a school-wide festival. Families came to the sanctuary ballroom on Thursday, January 28th to have fun with Rabbi Alpert, Robin Goldberg, teachers, and their friends. There were crafts projects, songs and yummy treats for all to enjoy. It was great fun for everyone. The beginning of February began with a fun celebration – pajama day for the 2s! All gathered in the sanctuary ballroom for “nighttime” fun and “bedtime” stories! Our new semester of after-school classes also began in February. Three and four-year-olds have the opportunity to explore popular programs such as Happy Feet soccer, Story Jumper, Smart About Art, Science Inspired by Nature, Little Top Chefs’ Cooking, Clay, Rhythm, Story and Math Madness – just to name a few. In addition to the regular classroom winter curriculum, ECP children enjoy all of our visiting specialists. In February, the dentist came to say hello to the classes and taught the children about eating healthy foods, brushing teeth correctly and how to keep a healthy smile! We also will continue to have visits from our animal friends at Nature, Sports with Steve Stone, music with Tina, and Mad Science. Due to the continued success of our vacation camps, we ran one during February break. Children who are 3 to 6 years-old have the opportunity to come to school during vacation and have loads of fun! This program is open to KTI and non-KTI students. Here’s hoping for an early spring!

KTI Religious School Purim is coming, Purim is coming…which also means that Passover cannot be too far behind! This also means that our Purimkiyadah is not too far off either. What is a Purimkiyadah and how did it get started? Those are really good questions. A few winters ago we had the misfortune of having a snow storm every Tuesday. Some of you may remember that year too! Well our annual Chanukiyadah (the Religious School Color War for Chanukah) was snowed out that year. All the kids were upset as the highlight of the winter had been canceled not once, not twice, not three, but four times! We had to do something, so we decided that we should hold our annual celebration of Chanukah in warmer weather, which turned out to be Purim time! So…why not celebrate Chanukah during Purim? Well we thought that was silly – after all we should celebrate Purim during Purim. If we celebrated Chanukah during Purim then when would we celebrate Purim? Rosh Hashanah? Things would get totally out of control and no one would ever know or remember when the holidays were actually supposed to be celebrated. We would have utter confusion (much like this explanation is turning out to be)! That first year we took the teams that the school had been broken up into for the Chanukiydah and replaced the names with Purim related names…and called the event the Purimkiyadah! As is our custom, the Chanukiydah is filled with fun and games, team building, and respect. The Purimkiydah is filled with even MORE fun and games, team building, respect and EXTRA silliness (what do you expect it’s PURIM)!

As the Rabbis said (you know those FAMOUS Rabbis) “usually good comes out of not so good” (isn’t that so Jewish?) and now not only do we hold a Chanukiydah every year to celebrate Chanukah,but we also have a Purimkiyadah to celebrate Purim! We now have two highlights in the school year, one in the winter and one in the spring, because two is always better than one! In fact this year, because it is a Jewish leap year, we add an extra month to the calendar (so all the holidays, in fact, fall when they are supposed to) so there are TWO months of Adar (the month of Purim)…only reinforces our idea that two is better than one!

Also this coming month, to ease you into Purim we are holding our annual KTI Purim Carnival on Sunday, March 20, 2016 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Social Hall! Come in costume, come with your children, come hang out with your friends while your children bounce in our bouncy house or play one of our carnival games!

The month of Adar and Purim time are suppose to be filled with silliness and fun, and I hope that this article lived up to that silliness!

CANTOR’S DISCRETIONARY FUND - Funds dispensed by Cantor for musical programs and activities. CAPITAL FUND - Contributions will enable us to tend to much needed infrastructure improvements without having to rely on our general fund, which supports our day-to-day operations. EARLY CHILDHOOD FUND - Funds are used for books, toys and special programs for the nursery program. GENERAL FUND - Supports general maintenance of synagogue facilities. HESED FUND - Donations will be used by the Committee to fulfill acts of loving kindness, bringing comfort to those in the community who are in need. JANET HEISER LOUNGE FUND – Donations will be used to refurbish the common area outside of the Daily Prayer Room for social and educational events. KIDDUSH FUND - $118 donation to co-sponsor kiddush and $360 to be a sole sponsor. Funds are allocated to subsidize Saturday morning kiddushim and collations on Friday night and holidays. LADIES AID FUND - Ladies Aid, an auxillary organization of KTI, has been in existence for more than 110 years. Funds are dispensed to the needy in the community on a case by case basis. MARK JACOBOWSKY GABBAI FUND - Donations will cover Torah reader fees and synagogue beautification projects. MEMORIAL PLAQUES - $360 for a brass plaque hung in the Daily Prayer Room in memory of a departed loved one. It is lit each year during the week of the Yahrzeit observance. PERMANENT SEATS - $1,500 per seat. A brass nameplate reserves seat(s) for family members during High Holiday Services. PRAYER BOOK FUND - $36 donation used to replenish supply of weekday, sabbath and holiday prayer books. RABBI’S DISCRETIONARY FUND - Funds dispensed by Rabbi as she sees fit for charitable and educational purposes. RELIGIOUS SCHOOL FUND - Funds subsidize enrichment programs and materials for the Hebrew School. TREE OF LIFE - $180 per leaf for the Tree of Life in the vestibule of the main building to commemorate special occasions. YAHRZEIT & MINYAN FUNDS - Donations are used to purchase or replace religious items - torah covers, kippot, lace coverings, taleisim, havdalah sets- and for maintenance of Memorial Boards.
