In thewake of the recent rape of a photo-journalist in theShaktiMills compound in Lower Parel, most dahi handimandals have been expressing outrage and have por-trayed messages condemning violence against womenGoing one-up on all this, the Shiv Senawent ahead and

distributed swords to the female govindas, claiming it wasfor their self-protection and safety. In January this year, the Sena had planned to distribute

knives towomen as a ‘haldi-kumkum’ gift on the birth an-niversary of BalThackeray on January 23.Thesewere Chi-nese knives, which can be folded and kept in small purses, and the party had planned to distribute 18,500 knives ofthem across the city through their shakhas.Issues arose after several government authorities stated

that it was against the law, as only a knife with a bladebelow six inch in size is permitted. The Chinese kniveshad blades of just three inches, but the plan was shelved. The ADC spoke to Abhijeet Pendse of the Shiv Sena,

who said, “The swords are a symbol of warriors and ofbravery. With the rise in cruel rapes and crime againstwomen, these swords are a gift to help them fight againstthose harming them.”

the digital video recorder ofthe Close Circuit TelevisionCamera (CCTV) installed in-side the shop so that the po-lice would find no cluesagainst them.Initial findings pointed to-

wards the involvement of anemployee identified as Cha-gan Lachela who had left forhis native village in Rajasthana week before the crime. Moreover, the mobilephone of the suspect wasmysteriously out of reachever since.A police team led by PSI

Wednesday’s sensa-tional firing on AjayGosalia is stronglybe-

lieved to be the handiwork ofMumbai’s underworld, whichwas approached by the landmafia of thewestern suburbs.Gosalia, popularly known

as Ajay Borivali aka AjayGanda in the city’s bookie cir-cles as well as underworld, isa noted fixer, well knowncricket bookie, is known forhis proximity to the city po-lice’s encounter specialistsand is a ruthless land-grab-ber, according to a highlyplaced crime branch officer.Recently, Ganda gained

popularity, particularity inthe western suburbs, byboasting about his proximityto a deputy commissioner ofpolice (DCP), attached to thespecialized branch of Mum-bai police. If sources in the crime

branch are to be believedthen, during the recently

ended IPL-6 season, Gandasquealed on rival bookies andthe police were successfullyable to arrest several big timebookies. This, added thesources, helped Ganda, whowas operating via other book-ies, to operate his illegal bet-ting business smoothly, asmost of his rival bookies ei-ther went underground orwere behind bars. Moreover, Ganda is known

for settling disputes and fix-ing deals and also for his ac-cess to all the underworldgangs of Mumbai. Presently,he is believed to be a closeaide of gangster Chhota Sha-keel.

Ganda’s life, andattempts to snuff itIn early 80s, Ganda, who usedto stay in a chawl in Borivali, came in contact with a gang-ster named Nandu Kadam. The latter was the friend ofChhota Rajan, the don inexile. In 1983, Ganda becamefriends with Rajan, throughKadam. In the 80s, Ganda was in-

troduced to gangster-turned-terrorist Dawood Ibrahim, who had fled the country in1984, by Rajan. It was Ganda

who used to pass on the in-formation about the city’sbusinessmen as well asbuilders in the western sub-urbs to the D-gang, who thenwould extort money fromthem, informed sources inpolice. In the 90s, apart from sev-

eral gangsters, Ganda was a

friend figure to most of theencounter specialists, includ-ing the recently acquittedcop, Pradeep Sharma. In 1997-98, for the first

time, an attempt was madeon Ganda by Nilesh Kokam, one of the sharp shooters ofthe D-gang, and his aides. This attemptwasmadewhen

Ganda, along with his rela-tives and friends from Mum-bai police, were celebratinghis son’s birthday bash atGarden restaurant in Malad. It was during the attack thatan officer, who was thenposted with city’s crimebranch, killed three peoplethen and there in the restau-rant. Rajesh More, BheemBengali and a person namedNilesh, originally fromAhemdabad, were shot dead.Kokam had fled from thespot.Again in 2011, just outside

Jaya Talkies in Borivli (West),unidentified assailants fired, but Ganda managed to sur-vive unhurt. Investigationsrevealed that it was a self-or-chestrated attack planned byGanda himself, said sourcesin the crime branch.

With regard to the recentattempt on Ganda, policestrongly speculate the role ofa person named Bablu Singh, said crime branch sourcesprobing the case. However, investigators, at this juncture,

are not able to establish theprecise role of Singh. The lat-ter knows Ganda very welland, in the past, he hadworked for Ganda, said po-lice.

ENOUGH REASONS TO SHOOT HIM

According to a Shiv Sena MP, requesting anonymity, “Till early 2000,Ganda was very close to the Bal Thackeray family. However, he had startedmisusing his proximity to the family and exploited several builders bygrabbing lands. In fact, he had cheated a few family friends of theThackerays to the tune of a few crores. Following this, the Thackerayfamily severed connections with him and the Shiv Sena’s mouthpiece,Saamana, carried a story along with Ganda’s photo, which clearly statedthat the Thackerays had no connection with him.

Setback to MBMC ‘munnabhais’By Suresh Golani

Adivisional bench com-prising Justice K.R. Shri-

ram and Justice V.M. Kanadeof Mumbai High Court hasdirected the state govern-ment authorities to take stepstowards the implementationof the Model RecruitmentRules in the Mira-BhayandarMunicipal Corporation(MBMC). The directionscame after social activist San-jay Tiwari filed a writ petition(No.661/2013) seeking imple-mentation of recruitmentrules early this year.

Under Section 457(3) of theBPMC Act 1949, it is manda-tory for the civic administra-tion to draft its recruitmentguidelines and seek a finalapproval from the state gov-ernment authorities. Infa-mous for its high profilerecruitment scams, out-of-turn illegal promotions andbackdoor entries, the civicadministration had been shy-ing away from sending theproposal of Model Recruit-ment Rules from the pastfour years. However, officials claimed

that the draft proposal has

been tabled in June this yearbefore the state governmentauthorities. With the judiciaryintervening in the issue, thestate government authoritieswill nowhave to take steps to-wards sanctioning the ruleswithin sixweeks of the receiptof the order (issued onAugust21, 2013) and file a compli-ance report. It has been al-leged that rules have beenbent for unqualified officialswho have been hurriedlyawarded illegal promotions totop posts without the requi-site permission from the con-cerned authorities.

WR’s drive to curb trespassingBy Kainaz Choksey

Inorder to keep anti-socialelements at bay besidespreventing accidents, the

Western Railway launched anintense drive to curb tres-passing at Andheri station onWednesday. Railway Protec-tion Force (RPF) personnelwere deployed at Andheristation at vulnerable spotsprone to trespassing.During the drive, 155 peo-

ple whowere caught crossingtracks were apprehendedunder Section 147 (Punish-ment for trespass and refusalto desist from trespass) of theRailway Act. A total fine ofRs.1,35,000 was collectedwhile 20 persons were sent tojail for 10 days.“The main aim of the drive

is to prevent the loss of

human lives. These driveswork as a deterrent againstpeople’s tendencies of cross-ing the tracks and endanger-ing their lives. The railwaycommuters are slightly ca-sual when it comes to follow-ing the rules of using FOB’s (Foot Over Bridge) and Sub-ways instead of crossingtracks,” said Sharat Chan-drayan, Chief Public RelationOfficer,Western Railway.“TheWestern Railway also

conducted this drive to deteranti-social elements and en-croachers from trespassingon the railway’s properties,”added Chandrayan.Over a period of time,

through several studies onbehavioral science and thethinking pattern of peoplecrossing the tracks, theWest-ern Railway has found that

along with punitive action, social awareness to bringabout a behavioral change inpeople’s thinking is neces-

sary. As such, several cam-paigns are organized to strikean emotional chord withpeople. These includeNukkadNaataks (street plays)at stations, poster cam-paigns, radio spots, cinemaslides, advertisements andannouncements. At the sametime several measures weretaken at ground zero, such aspainting the sleepers on rail-way tracks yellow at vulnera-ble spots so that personcrossing tracks is able tojudge the speed of an on-coming train. Intimidatingposters are also put at suchlocations to dissuade peoplefrom trespassing.Infrastructural develop-

ment is also beingundertakento accommodate the increas-ing crowd at stations, to pre-vent accidents. This month,

an escalator was started atVile-Parle station for the con-venience of commuters.Moresuch escalators will be pro-vided at Dadar, Andheri andBorivali stations by the end ofthis year. 25 escalators havebeen planned for theWesternRailway’s suburban sec-tion.103 Foot Over Bridgeshave already been providedon the Churchgate-Virar sec-tion for easy dispersal andEast-West connectivity, while

17more are being provided. On June 15, the ADC had

reported about the initiativeby the Western Railway tocurb accidents at unmannedlevel crossings, as nearly 40per cent of railway accidentstake place at such places. TheWestern Railway has startedan awareness initiative, usingnon-conventional methodson the suburban section, mostly from Virar onwardsup to Dahanu.

3,800 offenders bookedApart from special drives, regular vigil at vulnerablespots is being kept by RPF personnel and people arebeing dissuaded from crossing tracks. This year from January to July, 3,800 people were

booked under Section 147 of the Railway Act forcrossing tracks and a fine of Rs.19.5 lakh was collectedin totality while 40 people were sent to jail.

IT is interesting what some of the Indianmedia have to say about the latest Pak-istani attack on Indian soldiers across the

Line of Control in the Poonch area resultingin the killing of five of them. “Don’t GetMiredin Anti-Pak Jingoism” warned The EconomicTimes (August 9). “The Government” said thepaper “should go ahead with the talks be-tween Prime Minister Manmohan Singh andhis Pakistani counterpart, nevermind the jin-goistic rhetoric inside Parliament and on tel-evision.” Pakistan, according to the paper“has multiple power centres and India has todeal with all of them simultaneously at thatlevel”. India’s aim, added the paper “should beto strengthen the elements within Pakistanwhich realise that terror now threatens toconsume Pakistan itself and seek to try an-other track.” New Delhi, the paper furthersaid “must not fall into the trap” built by ter-rorists of “weakening the civilian govern-ment” in Pakistan.

PM-Sharif talksThe Asian Age (August 9) believed that “it is

not the right time for P.M.-Sharif talks”, sug-gesting that “Dr. Singh needs to find a way toavoid the meeting and instead, find ways toengage at a lower level.” At the same time thepaper said “itmight be in the fitness of thingsif the government gave some sign of under-standing the sense of injury among the peo-ple on the beheading of Indian soldiers inJanuary and the killing of five jawans earlierthis week.” The paper congratulated the Op-position for saying “the whole country stoodwith the government on the Pakistan ques-tion.” A columnist, Neena Gopal, writing inthe paper also said India “must keep talkingwith Pakistan giving valid reasons for that ad-vice. Dr. Singh, she said, “must de-link dia-logue from conflict-resolution.”Hindustan Times (August 9) argued that

India’s response to Pakistan’s “grave provoca-tions” must be “tempered with pragmatism”.However much it may stick in our throat, there is no getting away from engaging Pak-istan” said the paper, adding: “To be very re-alistic, India’s best bet is to talk to them andat least gauge what measures can be taken toavert such incidents in the future.” “No one”said the paper, “in their sane minds wouldwant the region to be plunged into a war”, soit would be better “for our politicians not toecho the belligerence seen among the pub-

lic.” “We can only hope” said the paper, “thatthe restraint shown by our Foreign Ministryand the Army is not taken for cowardice…” Ifwe are to believe the Defence Ministry, theArmy is not given freedom to react the bestway it can and one wonders how the Armywill futurely react to Pak terrorism. Under-standably many columnists have expressedtheir views on this provoking subject, some ofthem strongly.SwapanDas Gupta, writing in The Times of

India (August 11) pointed out that “just toolong India has been clutching at straws, try-ing its best to strengthen the ‘good’ Pakistanivis-à-vis the ‘bad’ guys in the seminaries andcantonments.” He emphasised that Pakistanhas detected ‘openings’ in “a weak and frac-tured government in Delhi” and added: “It istoo late in the day to inject cement into thespine of the present Indian dispensation. Thegovernment seems a passing show… Is aunited Pakistan any longer in India’s largernational interest? The answer will suggest long term strate-

gies.” Dasgupta has not said it openly but

from what he has said, one gets the impres-sion that as a “long-term strategy” Indiamustwork towards dismembering Pakistan furtherwithout the least sense of guilt, “bymeans fairor foul”. It must be further divided by giving, for example, not just moral support to theBaluchis, but arms equipment and training totake on their evil bosses in Islamabad. Andmuch the same effort must be made to sepa-rate Sindh fromPakistan and there is no needto be apologetic, about it. If Pakistani ‘terror-ists’ (another name for armed units in civilclothes) can attempt to fund uprising inKashmir, India should be free to pay back inthe same coin. The UPA government may

think that it high statesmanship not to fall aprey to provocation from Pakistan, but BabaRamdev reflected public opinion fully whenhe said as quoted inHindustan Times (August11) that the Centre must adopt “an eye-for-an-eye approach” and kill at least 50 Pakistanisoldiers for the five killed in Poonch.Several columnists writing in TheNew Sun-

day Express (August 11) also had strong viewsto express. Thus, Saroj Gaur, a former Alla-habad University Professor and a Rights ac-tivist advised the External AffairsMinister “tohave a hard look at the statement of 40 formerIndian military and civilian leaders that callsfor a radical shift in Indian policy. Among thesignatories are two former Army chiefs, an AirForce chief, two heads of RAW, a former Di-rector of the Intelligence Bureau, a DirectorGeneral of BSF, two foreign secretaries andtwoHome Secretaries, whose knowledge canhardly be questioned. Nothing that “short ofwaging a war, there are many options thatIndia can explore” Saroj Gaur said India“could execute more aggressive retaliationagainst infiltration across the Line of Control, limited raids on jihad training camps and tar-get the terrorist leadership.”

UPA’s Pakistan policyAccording to Gaur “the UPA’s Pakistan pol-

icy can best be viewed as a tragic waste whereit has nothing to boast of any tangible gainsachieved in return for its obsessive pursuanceof its one-point agenda of ‘Peace With Pak-istan At Any Cost”. The paper’s editor-in-chiefPrabhuChawla damned theUPA governmentfor lacking “long-term perspective” and forshrinking “their horizon from a globaloverview to becoming mere camp followersof the US take on international diplomacy.”Chawla said that “no neighbour takes us seri-ously” and “the Indian government is goingout of its way to conceal the truth from thepeople.” “When Pakistan based terrorists andISI henchmen murder Indians, our rulersdisturbingly don’t even catch a cold… Ourdiplomats are busy playing golf and smokingcigars in Nepal, a playground for extremistsfrom China and Pakistan”. It is clear that thepublic anger is rising steadily and oneshouldn’t be surprised if in a public display ofdistrust the public demands the resignationof the UPA government and fresh elections. The UPA government is unfit to rule anylonger from Delhi.

UPA is unfit to rule any longer

Where was Yasin Bhatkal before hestayed in a hide-out on the Bihar-

ONEofmy friendswas retiring; hewas a bigindustrialist, and he was retiring because

of my advice. I said, "You have so much andyou don't have a son; you have two daughtersand they aremarried in rich families. Nowwhyunnecessarily bother about all kinds of wor-ries — of business, and income-tax, and thisand that? You have enough. Even if you liveone thousand years, it will do."He said, "That's true. The real problem is

not the business, the real problem is I will beleft alonewithmywife. I can retire right now ifyou promise me one thing, that you will livewith us.”I said, "This is strange. Are you retiring or

am I retiring?" He said, "That is the condition.Do you think I am interested in all these trou-bles? It is just to escape frommy wife."Thewifewas a great social worker. She used

to run an orphanage, a house for widows, anda hospital particularly for peoplewho are beg-gars and cannot pay for their treatment. I alsoasked her in the evening, "Do you really enjoyall this, from themorning till the evening?"She said, "Enjoy? It is a kind of austerity, a

self-imposed torture."I said, "Why should you impose this torture

on yourself?" She said, "Just to avoid yourfriend. If we are left alone, that is theworst ex-

perience in life."And this is a lovemarriage, not an arranged

marriage.Theymarried each other against thewhole family, the whole society, because theybelonged to different religions, differentcastes; but their imprints gave them signalsthat this is the right woman, this is the rightman. And all this happens unconsciously.

That's why you cannot answer why you havefallen in love with a certain woman, or with acertain man. It is not a conscious decision. Ithas been decided by your unconscious im-print.Particularly people in India go on using

women as if they are just servants.Theirwholework consists of taking care of the childrenand the kitchen and the house, as if that's theirwhole life. Have you respected your wife as ahuman being? Then, if anger arises, it is natural. She feels

frustrated because her life is running out andshe has not known any joy, she has not knownanybliss, she has not knownanything that cangive meaning and significance to her life….Have you just sat by her side sometimes,

silently, just holding her hand, not saying a

word, just feeling her, and letting her feel you?No, that is not done in India at all.Wives and husbands have only one kind of

communication: quarrelling. I have been ac-quainted with thousands of Indian families, Ihave stayedwith thousands of Indian families. While I was traveling all over the country I wasstayingwith somany families that I have cometo know almost all kinds of families, but veryrarely have I seen husbands and wives re-spectful to each other. Using each other, ex-ploiting each other, reducing each other tothings, but never respecting each other's di-vinity— then this hell is created. One of the great Hindu saints, Tulsidas, has

a strange statement: Dhol gamar pashu aurnari.Ye sab tadan ke adhikari. He is categoriz-ing women with drums— dholmeans drum, gamar means idiots, pashu means animals, and nari means woman. All these four areconstantly beaten. The dhol, the drum, willnot work if you don't beat it. So for thousandsof years Indian women have been beaten. Ithas been taken for granted, there is no ques-tion. I have come across situations where ahusband was beating his wife and I could nottolerate it and I entered their house, and I wasamazed:more than the husband, thewifewasagainst me, saying, "He is my husband, youcannot interfere in our affairs. If he is beatingme, it is perfectly okay."So deep has the conditioning gone.

Mumbai’s spirit is back?AS in the past we get satisfied bysaying that Mumbai’s spirit is backand we ask ourselves: Why shouldwe fear? The question can be an-

swered in affirmative as the cases ofrape against women is on the in-crease. In all we fear the aftermathof these kind of incidents and theposition of the victim as she goesout again for work. People think ofher past and she is separated fromthe society for no fault of hers. Thiscauses anxiety and tension to thevictim. Better to avoid love in openas it attracts miscreants to take ad-vantage. After all the happenings, the position is becoming bad toworse. A simple living and highthinking can bring cheer to life. The photojournalist’s rape

brought shame to theMetro city. Allalong we were trumpeting thatMumbai is safer than other metros. As a matter of fact, the city womensuffer because of molestation, eveteasing and rape more than otherplaces and only few cases are re-ported. After Nirbhaya’s rape, the af-

fected persons had the confidenceand came forward and reported thematter to the police. In the past, thematter was hushed up at the houselevel and the culprits got thecourage to repeat such acts. It istime for parents to keep their girlsand boyswithin the limit and not gobeyond and expose their love lifeoutside the four walls and then fallprey to such bad elements. Preven-tion is better than cure and it is wisenot to go to isolated places at oddhours and invite trouble.

APROPOS ‘FSL to speed up reportsin gangrape case’ (ADC, Aug 28), itis good to learn that Kalina ForensicResearch Laboratory (FSL) hastaken up at the right earnest to geton with the lab tests of the samples

collected at the crime site like theearth comparison, DNA, clothingand other elements to nail the fivecondemned scoundrels now in thecity police’s custody as otherwisethe excellent effort byMumbai Police who hadmanaged to nab all thesedemons , would be a waste. In fact,it is a second national heinouscrime post the December 16 lastyear’s ‘Nirbhaya’ case. Once theforensic lab’s inferences are drawn, these demons should be brought tojustice bya fast track court at the earliestin such a manner that any one whowants to commit suchan inhuman act in future, will thinktwice before he does so. It is indeedawkward to answer questionson the frequent rapes being com-mitted in India while one is abroad,as I had to face such a situation

while I was in Europe last week.— Bikram Banerjea,Mumbai

Our gutless youngstersI WAS shocked while reading thenews recently about the gutless Os-hiwara crowd when an actor andher friend were fighting with bagsnatchers. Our ‘young’ public, is‘brave’ in shouting slogans againstanti-women crimes only when theyare in a big crowd. At the most theycan join the candle march or theycan hold placards. Unfortunately, Iwas not present there at that time.Otherwise I would have certainlyhelped these two to fight against thebag snatchers and hand them overto the police, though my age is 66,and also I have a spinal problem. Iwould have not preferred to be acoward, mute spectator at all.

LETTER OFTHE DAY

WHATEVER said and done, Indianeconomy suffered a huge loss asthe rupee touched a new lowagainst the dollar. By seeing theposition the foreign investors arenot going to come in. If peoplehave expectations that the rupeeis going to slide still further, theywill hold back investments.Wehave seen the crash of Indianrupee value in the last twomonths as Indian Rupee was over-valued at that time. The positionappears to be bleak unless anduntil the flow starts coming in andthe rupee goes up again. To whatlevel remains to be seen. Thoughthe global economy is on thedownward trend, the present po-sition of the Indian economy isour ownmaking. We were runninga sizable CAD for the couple ofyears but Indian Rupee was com-pletely stable due to free flow offoreign funds. The extended pe-riod for which we run Indianeconomy without catching upwith the world market gave a bigleeway and the free fall of IndianRupee began. Now everything hasgone out of hand and it is time torecover, otherwise, the rupee willcross 70 per dollar and more. It istime to resurrect and not to brushaside the present position by say-ing not to despair as our FM is try-ing hard to save his head.

— R.S.Meenakshi, Chembur

THE speed at which the Rupee istumbling down and down day byday, even the common peoplehave now started to doubt of theinternational nexus among thepresent Indian govt., the US andthe EU, of course, for the mone-tary benefit of the ‘present Indiangovt.’ even at the cost of all their‘vote banks’ known as ‘aamaadmi’ from all the castes viz.Muslims, Hindus, Jains, Sikhs,Parsis, Buddhists, SCs, STs, OBCetc. indiscriminately. Otherwise, there is no prima facie reason inpresence of the ‘economist’ PrimeMinister and the finance minister. If these Harvard qualified econo-mists are honestly unable to con-trol such a tremendous tumblingof our Rupee, they should take ad-vice of the Nobel Prize winner In-dian patriotic economist AmartyaSen at once. Or they should gothrough the steps taken by two

former PrimeMinisters late LalBahadur Shastri and late MorarjiDesai and implement their eco-nomic strategies to stop the tum-bling of our Rupee as well as tocontrol the daily spiralling foodinflation on a war footing. Other-wise the Rupee will come down tothe level of Rs. 100/- per US dollarwithin next few days.

— Hansraj Bhat, Borivali

RUPEE plummets to 66.24 againstdollar on fears that Food SecurityBill widens the fiscal deficit fur-ther and created panic in marketand the sensex crashes to 590points by the way. Now, after all,the blame game started onceRupee slided to a new low. Thecoffin of Indian economy is car-ried by P. Chidambaram andPrimeMinister Dr. ManmohanSingh and followed by Congresspresident Sonia Gandhi and Presi-dent PranabMukherjee (as thepredecessor of Chidambaram) atthe back. Since the full blame ison the present FM, he is trying topass on the buck to his predeces-sor. Now Chidambaram opinedthat there are domestic factorsthat led to the fall of rupee againstdollar. One of them is that we al-lowed fiscal deficit to be breachedand current account deficit toswell because of certain decisionthat Congress-led FM did be-tween the year 2009 and 2011-thatis by the present President. Itbrought growth and stability but itcost us in terms of fiscal and cur-rent account deficit. It was indeeda veiled criticism of his predeces-sor PranabMukherjee. Now it isvery clear that how PranabMukherjee was pushed to the postof President to save face of theUPA Government.

THE ‘only downward’ rollercoaster ride of the ‘ru-pee’ has gotme thinking. The second syllableof the currency is indeed relevant– because very soon the onlyplaces that will accept it are pub-lic toilets. Maybe we should alsonow call it the Rue-pee. In just 66balls (years) the rupee has scoreda century against the BritishPound and a double century

against the Kuwaiti Dinar. And re-call – till 1970 the Indian rupeewas an accepted currency in theMiddle East. And how about anew symbol – perhaps the middlefinger? And what has the muchtom-tommed crown prince to sayabout all that is going on now?Surely he will not have the guts tobe PM in 2014. And has someonedone all this just to ensure thatthis does not happen – becauseonly he can do what is necessaryas he did in 1991? But he will wait

till the appropriate moment. Tillthen you can play monopoly withreal rupees and no one will cheatbecause it is just not worth it.

— T.R. Ramaswami, Kandivli

THE value of Indian rupee isfalling at an alarming rate with In-dian economy heading for disas-ter situation hitting the commonpeople very hard. The record fallagainst US dollar continues to hogthe limelight and it has also lostground and breached key levelagainst a host of other currenciesincluding British pound, euro andSwiss franc. Adding to rupee’swoes against US currently standat nearly Rs. 70 the British poundcrossed Rs. 106 level, euro Rs. 92,Swiss franc Rs. 75, Canadian dol-lar Rs.65, Australian Rs. 60, while

New Zealand, Singapore,Bruneian and Libyan dinarcrossed Rs. 50 level. Even moreexpensive foreign currencies likeKuwait dinar at Rs. 240, BahrainiRs. 180, Omani rial Rs. 175 andLatvia Rs. 130 which proves thatthe Indian government havefailed totally to control the slide ofthe Indian rupees which has be-come cause for concern. The ur-gent need of the hour is that theIndian government must tightenthe measures like cutting the costs

and removing subsidies on fertil-izers and other items by reducingthe fiscal deficit to bring back theeconomy in the proper shape andin stable condition.

— Bhagwan Thadani,Mumbai

AS the exchange rate of rupeeplummets against the dollar, pullseven sensex below 18,000, itshows that there is no controlfrom RBI or the Finance Ministerat the Centre to have check offalling rupee in the last eightmonths. The Indian exporters arenowmaking more profit and fam-ilies of those working overseas aregetting more rupees for every dol-lar remitted by such persons toIndia. But foreign tourists comingto India will pay less dollars fortheir vacation in India. Also, im-

ports have become costly, affect-ing consumer durables. So, its in-deed a mixed bag for Indianeconomy-which is more bad thangood. Rupee’s fall will also have adirect impact on foreign investorspulling of Indian equity marketsand the students studying abroad,as they will have to cough upmore in rupee terms. A muchneeded fillip is needed throughReserve Bank of India or elseRupee will touch Rs.70 mark be-fore the end of this month.

— Jayanthy S.Maniam, Sion

THE rupee’s fall has been over-done and the rupee trading at 68to a dollar is too fast too soon andshould retrace in the short runthough the rupee looks weak inthe long run. Here are some ur-gent steps need to be taken tohelp rupee save some ground.1. People should use home

made products which saves for-eign currency and at the sametime encourage Indian economyand growth. We consume barrelsof coke daily and skipping thatwould mean saving huge foreigncurrency.2. India is a great tourist attrac-

tion with rich historic heritage.Develop it professionally so thatwe earn foreign exchange revenuewhen loads of tourists visit ourcountry for leisure and pleasure.3. The brightest brains are

found in India and wemust makeour educational institutions worldclass so that India becomes aworld education hub and attractsa lot of foreign students.

« PLAY: QTP’S DOUBLE BILL — TWO CAUTIONARY TALES

If you want to spend yourweekend soaking up some culturewith great plays, QTP has a treatin store for you at Prithvi theatre.

The two cautionary tales that will beperformed include one futuristicdystopia as well as a retelling ofhistory and both serve as warnings forthe irresponsible development andunchecked apathy that can devastatea country. Director Quasar Thakore Padamsee

At the age of just 25, Ben Gold is one of the multi-talented

names in the electronic dance music scene and will be

performing at blueFROG tonight. Ben, who has been

brought here by music events and artist management company

Power Struggle, combines a highly acclaimed career as a

leading studio engineer with that of one of the brightest young

stars in the trance soundscape, playing at some of the world’s

leading clubs alongside world class DJs. Not only has he been a

regular feature on Armin’s ASOT Trance 500, his new track,

Mesocyclone, has already gained support from EDM giants

such as Armin van Buuren, Markus Schulz, Gareth Emery,

Jochen Miller, Tritonal, Judge Jules, Sean Tyas and Ummet

Ozcan. Below are excerpts from his interview:

Are you excited about your debut tour to India? What have you

been hearing from your fellow DJs about their experience here?

India has been one of the places I have always wanted to

perform at. I always hear great feedback from fellow DJs

about their shows and the people. I’m glad I am finally coming

to India!

Being a DJ today seems to be all about glamour and attention.

Give us an insight into your life.

It’s certainly not all glamour, but I’m extremely lucky to be able

to do this job. I spend a lot of time on my own at airports, on

flights and in hotel rooms, all to be able to perform all over the

world; it’s worth every second! My Macbook is a mini-version of

my studio that I have at home, so I’m able to work on set-ups

and ideas for new tunes whilst I’m on tour. I go to the gym as

often as I can as it’s important to stay fit and healthy when

travelling every weekend. I love my job and wouldn’t change it

for anything in the world!

Tell us a bit about your A State of Trance (ASOT) experience.

What preparations go into creating a fantastic set like that one?

Playing at any ASOT party is always a highlight in your career.

They put on the biggest trance parties in the world. I spend time

making and sourcing exclusive new material for my sets at

ASOT. It’s a good opportunity to showcase your new music to

the world.

Do you have any message for your fans, who are waiting to see

you play live in a few hours? Are they in for any surprises?

Firstly, I am so happy to be coming to India. Over the last few

years, I have seen a huge increase in fans from India on my

social platforms. I’m always a couple of singles ahead so expect

to hear new Ben Gold music which you wouldn’t have heard

anywhere else, alongside some of your favourites!

DESIELEPHANT

When I heard that Watches &

More were re-launching in anew avatar, all I expected wasa different design and a new

colour scheme. However, they havedrastically changed from being just a retailstore to a place where you can beentertained while you shop — somethingthat they call ‘shopatainment.’

The store follows an open-door policywhich makes it very inviting. As far as thelayout is concerned, apart from a smallseating area in the centre, it is quitebarren. The watch displays are lined upalong the wall and the centre is left empty, allowing you to browse around whileenjoying the loud music or watching thevideos on their plasma TV — all a part oftheir ‘shopatainment’ concept.

With vintage watch advertisements anda bohemian wall that aims to showcasethe transition of time (it includes itemssuch as the typewriter, the Kolkata handrickshaw and a manual taxi meter), thedécor is impressive.

And if that wasn’t enough, they alsohave a small refreshment counter whichserves sodas and juices, as well as a shop& win scheme where you get the chance towin a prize if your name is selected in alucky draw (right now, the prize is amountain bike). They also plan to havegigs at the store to increase theentertainment factor.

You must think that all this made usforget about the watches. However, theactual merchandise is not unusual. Theyhave a range of brands from Fossil andEspirit to Antonio Bernini and PierreCardin. They are also the only chain inIndia with Madison Newyork and Westar.

When you visit, don’t forget to checkout the special discounts display. Theyplan to have discounts all year roundand you can get as much as 50% off on selected timepieces.

With there being a threat to the habitats of the largest land animal in the

world, father and son duo, Marc and Mike Spits, initiated the first open

air art exhibition called the Elephant Parade in 2007 at Rotterdam. With

a strong motive to conserve and encourage the welfare of the lives of the Asian

elephants, the parade includes creative, life-sized models of elephants from

various parts of the globe. These models are created by fashion designers from

across the world. Since the first elephant parade, the event has been taking place

in a number of countries and this year, along with the UK National Tour, the

Elephant Parade visited the US (from August 23-25 at Dana Point in California) for

the first time. This specific parade was on our radar for a long time as jewellery

designer and owner of luxury jewellery brand Mirari, Mira Gulati was also

participating with her elephant design.

Talking about her participation in the parade, Mira says, “The elephant parade

is a brand in itself and over the years, it has shown immense growth and helped

in best possible way to conserve the welfare of elephants. Elephants are an

essential part of Indian wildlife and saving their endangered lives is a must. The

elephant designed by us will show off the rich culture of India and our love for it.”

The figurine that she created for the event is that of a seated elephant with

several beautiful Indian motifs. The elephants displayed at the parade are

auctioned towards the end of the event and the proceeds are donated towards

the Asian Elephant Foundation.

Eat, an all-day café, owned by thefolks behind the lounge Escobar, has opened up in place ofChocolate Affair, which shut

down quite some time ago. Eat’s menuoffers all-day breakfast, soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers, pizzas, mains andof course, desserts. The café has an understated but

impressive décor with a lot of brown, white and wood. When you enter, you seea staircase going down to your left andalong that are seating booths. At firstglance, you’ll notice that there are justthree booths, but when you reach the endof the stairs, another flight of stairs takes

you down to the basement which alsoserves as part of the café! We’ve seen a number of wall

installations in many city restaurantslately (Jam Jar Diner, The Pantry) andthere was one here as well in the form ofrecycled crates with small items perchedon them. Frankly, it’s the duplex seatingarrangement that we like most. After settling in, we first ordered for a

Iced Green Tea with lemongrass, mintand ginger (`200) and a Berry Mango IcedTea (`200); both of them were refreshing, but the latter was too sweet. In the nextround, we asked for a Lobster Salad withgreen beans, apple, avocado and truffleoil (`490), and were told that lobster wasnot available but they could replace itwith smoked salmon. The salad wasdelicious — yummy dressing that didn’tdrench the vegetables, crunchy, freshlettuce and generous chunks of salmon— but wasn’t filling and demands theprice of a main course dish, which wethought was unfair. Next up was a GrilledJalapeno Popper & Cheese Sandwich(`370) served with potato wedges and abasic salad on the side. With the first fewbites, the sandwich seems like theultimate cheese delight, but eventuallyyou get tired of the excess cheese. Our pizza feast comprised of Roasted

Garlic Spinach & Tomato Pizza (`450) andSpicy Sausage & Gorgonzola Pizza (`550).The pizzas were served on wafer thincrust — light but filling — and thesausage and gorgonzola combination gotthe most votes by the pizza lovers at ourtable. The BBQ Chicken Burger (`420),that had a generously thick anddelectable patty sandwiched betweenbrown bread sesame buns also fared wellwith our picky palettes. We ended ourmeal with Blue Velvet Cheesecake (`240),Three Layer Chocolate Cake (`240) andSuper Chocolate Brownie (`240). Thecheesecake looked too pretty to dig intoand was equally delicious. While the cakeseemed a little dry, the brownie madeimpressive amends for it.Overall, our eating experience here was

better than average. But, what will makeus visit this café and not the many othersin the vicinity? Eat hasn’t nailed that yet.

Kerala food is usually a hit

with me, so when I heard

Keys Hotel was holding a

Kerala food festival, I had to rush

over, just to see what was in store.

The menu for the day included

soup, salads, starters, main

course, desserts and a special

roast of the day.

My eyes goggled at the site of

Crab Rassam, so I had to try that! I

have no problem with pepper, but

the dish should come with a

warning because the heady

concoction can leave unsuspecting

customers spluttering. I’m

favourable to meat in most of my

meals, but here, the vegetarian

starters also shone! I’ve never

savoured the humble (and usually

very oily) tendlis (ivy gourd) as

much as the Kovakka Kondatum

and even the cauliflower in the

Pookose Ularthu was a hit. The

non-vegetarian platter was

delicious as well, but very spicy.

The Kozhie Pepper Fry (chicken)

and Mutton Sikandari Taj stood

out. I enjoyed the special roast

tender quail tremendously, along

with the delicious Kulamauu Meen

Curry (fish). The chicken curry

(Kozhie Varutharachattu) paled in

comparison but was still good.

The bottle gourd

Churakaparippu Koottu was a

yummy curry and the appam was

the lightest, softest, most melt-in-

your-mouth one I’d ever had.

The sweet dishes on offer at the

buffet were well-made but not

spectacular. The menu needed to

be translated for me, because

while identifying dishes was easy,

remembering the names was

harder than I had anticipated — but

it made the evening that much

more interesting.

The food gets thumbs up from

me. The festival ended last month,

but head down for a taste of their

food and ask their chef to whip up

some of these dishes; you won’t

leave disappointed.

Iusually enjoy making small talkwith airport immigrationofficers, who are often my firstpoint of contact with the

country that I am about to stepinto. Their questions are alwayscentered (rather gleefully!) aroundthe numerous visas and entrystamps adorning my weather-beaten passport. But, that day, theofficer I was standing in front ofwas far from amused. “You’re notgoing directly to your resort?” heasked for the second time, as Ipatiently repeated my plans for thenext six hours. Shaking his headwith disbelief, he bestowed on mypassport the all important entrystamp and with an exasperatedthud, I was waived through. But, it really wasn’t his fault, you

see. I was an oddity for him, doingone of the most bizarre things atraveller to the Maldives does. Before ensconcing myself in thecreature comforts of the ultra-hipprivate island resort that I wasbooked into, I had chosen to spendhalf a day traipsing through thewonders of the capital island ofMale (pronounced maa-lay) on theKaafu Atoll to soak in the localculture and pulse of the countryone normally eschews in favour ofthe ubiquitous resorts — placesthat are far removed both indistance and ethos of the capital. As an archipelago of 1,200

islands, with only 200 inhabited, the Maldives is a cluster ofemeralds in the Indian Ocean, withMale as its unpolished, undiscovered diamond. At justunder six square kilometers in size, the entire city can be covered onfoot in less than a day. Stepping offthe water taxi, I knew I’d have to letmy keen sense of discovery take mewherever it fancied with no set agenda. But, side-stepping my sense of

discovery, I paid heed to my senseof smell as I navigated my waythough the bustling fish market.Fishmongers garrulously shoutedout in Dhivehi, the local Maldivianlanguage, bargain-hungryhousewives in long gowns withcolourful headscarves jostled forspace with chefs from resortscoveting the catch of the day — themarket was a hive of frenzy andbonhomie, doubling up as theperfect orientation to my Male sojourn. Continuing along that same

vein, the fruit and vegetable markethoused alongside its ‘fishy’counterpart was another greatintroduction to local daily life. Withstalls selling exotic fruit such as thehairy rambutan, snake fruit andthe stinky durian, this market is

also the unofficial town meetingplace with unique rope hammock-chairs where locals converge fordaily tea drinking sessions overplates of desserts such as thecylindrical huni folhi made from amixture of Patna rice flour, gratedcoconut and coconut palm syrup.Picking up a few pieces to takeback home, I also indulged thetourist within by buying a fewcurios made from shell andcoconut husk from a shop a fewminutes away on Male’s northernend of Chandhanee Magu. I madeall my purchases using US dollars, the de facto tourist currency in theMaldives. Though they do have theMaldivian Rufiyaa, they prefer touse the dollar for commerce withtourists both at resorts and in Male, while locals use the rufiyaa. As it was a Friday, I followed a

group of men wearing skull caps asthey made their way to offerprayers at the beautiful HukuruMiskiy also called the FridayMosque. Just outside the mosque, Iwandered towards the modest,security-free President’s housecalled the Muliaage. The house ispainted in white, with turquoisehighlights on the windows anddoors along with a bright coral-coloured roof. The grounds of thehouse are also the resting place ofMoroccan scholar Abul BarakatYousef Al-Berberi, who is believedto have introduced Islam to theMaldives in 1153. I, sadly, wasn’tfortunate enough, as the Presidentwas on a state visit.I did get lucky as far as a superb

Though notreasonable at USD 20 (`1,354) , themeal was a great way to get into thegroove of the city as I got a chanceto dine and swap tales with locals. But, like all good things, this tryst

had to come to an end. And, as theafternoon sun reached its prime, itwas time for me to board my seaplane to yet another sanitised, cookie cutter resort and leavebehind an island city full of souland character. A place thatepitomises the cliché ‘off thebeaten track’ with all its might!

A WALK ON THEOTHER SIDE…The Maldives isn’t just about swaying palm trees, soft-sand beaches and decadentprivate island resorts as Raul Dias finds out on his half day tryst with its capital— the diminutive island city of Male that is as quaint and cultured as it is beautiful

Ambit Capital calls a ‘Buy’ on TTK PrestigeCMP: Rs. 3347 Target Rs. 4070TTK Prestige’s sales growth in Tamil Nadu, according to our recent channelchecks, revived to 15-20% YoY due to a strong and early monsoon and re-duction in power cuts during July-August. Non-south sales growth momen-tum remains strong at 35-40% YoY along with a substantial reduction incredit outstanding with dealers to ~20-25 days from ~40 days a year ago. With the long-term value drivers intact, we expect revenue growth of 21% YoYin FY14 and 23% revenue CAGR in FY13-18. Hawkins’ recent update in theAGM around the new intended product launches is a risk worth watching outfor in 2HFY14. We reiterate our BUY stance with a target price of Rs 4,067.Sales growth of 15-20% YoY in Tamil Nadu during Jul-Aug: Our channel

checks in Tamil Nadu suggest that retail footfalls and demand have sub-stantially improved in Jul-Aug, due to: (a) a strong and early monsoon; (b) re-duction in daily power cuts to less than 2 hours in Chennai (from 4-5 hourspreviously) and to 5-6 hours outside Chennai (from 14-15 hours previously);and (c) a weak base effect from 2QFY13. We expect revenue growth fromsouth India (57-58% of TTK’s overall revenues) to increase to at least 10%YoY in 2QFY14 from a decline of 13% YoY in 1QFY14.Non-south sales momentum remains strong at 35-40% YoY: Despite the

high base of FY13, non-south sales growth has remained strong thanks to:(a) lack of any new product launches by Hawkins so far; and (b) addition ofdistributors and strengthening of the ground-level sales team across statessuch as Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. The average number of days ofcredit outstanding with dealers in north India has also reduced substantially

to 20-25 days currently from 38-40 days a year ago.Valuation: TTK Prestige’s long-term value drivers

remain intact. This includes expansion across prod-ucts, geographies and distribution channels amidst awell-thought strategy for capital allocation, pro-moter’s succession planning and strengthening ofthe middle management team to cater to the scala-bility of the business model. We expect revenueCAGR of 23% and PAT CAGR of 24% in FY13-18. OurDCF model generates a valuation of Rs 4,067/share,24% upside. We reiterate our BUY stance.

Kotak Securities calls a ‘Buy’ on NTPCCMP: Rs. 130 Target Rs. 160Ahead of peers. We upgrade NTPC to BUY (from ADD previously) with a tar-get price of Rs 160 as the CMP ignores the inherent strengths of the companyrelative to peers—(1) disproportionate allocation of coal due to proximity tocoal mines, (2) higher off-take due to low-cost take or pay arrangements, and(3) consistent earnings growth with continued investment in new projects. At1.1X P/B, NTPC trades at a 45% discount to historical trading multiples, ig-noring the inherent strengths of the company.Proximity to coal mines will ensure higher coal allocation compared to

peers: Proximity to coal mines, dedicated evacuation infrastructure and sup-plement through captive coal blocks will likely allow NTPC to continue to enjoya disproportionate allocation of domestic coal supplies. A bulk of NTPC’s ex-tant power plants receives coal supplies through dedicated MGR facilities, with 75% of coal supplies from pit-head locations. Only two coal sources(MCL-Talcher and SECL-Korba) are not fully meeting coal supply commitmentscurrently. Proximity to coal sources will continue to enable NTPC to enjoy adisproportionate allocation of coal for both extant as well as new plant ca-pacities. Even for incremental capacities, nearly 30% are dependent on cap-tive coal. Dependence on MCL/SECL, which have a larger supply deficit, isrestricted to ~35 mtpa (30% of coal requirements).Low cost of generation will keep it ahead of peers on cost curve: With low-

cost domestic coal continuing to dominate fuel sourcing and a relatively age-ing fleet (with a mix of new and old plants), average cost of generation forNTPC will continue to be superior to that of IPPs—NTPC had an average fuelcost of Rs 1.7/kwh in FY2013 compared to >Rs 2.5/kwh for private sectorplayers. While cost of generation is less ominous for NTPC (under cost-plusregime), efficient players such as NTPC will continue to enjoy a higher off-take as state distribution utilities become more cost conscious. At 1.1X P/B, NTPC trades at deep discount to historical multiples, ignores earn-

ings resilience: At 1.1 P/B and 9X P/E, NTPC is trading at historical lows, whileignoring the inherent strength of the cost-plus business model as well as the 9%CAGR in earnings factored by us (over FY2011-16E). We upgrade NTPC to BUY(from ADD previously) with a revised target price of Rs 160 (Rs 165 previously). While fuel security remains an area of concern, cost plus sale arrangementmakes NTPC relatively better-positioned in comparison to IPPs with lower fueland off-take risk even as availability-based incentive ensures resilience of earn-ings. In our view, improved visibility on the capacity addition program beyond theimmediate 14 GW targets as well as clarity on sustenance of returns despite coalavailability issues with a pending regulatory review will provide long-term earningsvisibility, which is critical for stock performance.

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY:The Nifty rose substantially on Thursday (August 29, 2013)a net 124.05 points (2.35%) and closed at the 5409 pointlevel. But given the macroeconomic situation just now, whether we can afford it (food security plan) right now?Timing is not right, timing is an issue. We should not dothis because of electoral considerations. We should doit because it can be done, it needs to be done. And thisis a desirable thing to happen.

YoY growth in the first two quar-ters of this calendar year wouldbe the seventh worst on record

since the introduction of GDP quar-terly data in 1996 and the lowestsince 2002, estimates ZyFin, formerlyBluFin, which has introduced amonthly macroeconomic lead indi-cators that tracks consumer outlookand the business cycle in India.

It projects Q1 FY’14 (or Q2CY’14)GDP growth at 4.3%, well below con-sensus estimates of 5% signallingthat the Indian economy is in deepcrisis

The silver lining however is on theinflation front. ZyFin’s Monthly GDPGrowth Indicator (MGGI), whichtracks inflation on the basis of theGDP deflator, has witnessed a col-lapse in the sequential GDP deflatorinflation from 6.7% in Q4 FY’13 (orQ1 CY’13) to a Seasonally Adjusted

Annual Rate (SAAR) of 1.7% in Q1FY’14 (or Q2 CY’13) with the monthlyestimate for June at 0%. ZyFin esti-mates that inflation for the yearwould fall below 6% for the first timesince the year 2007, excluding thecrisis quarters of 2009.

There are four components ofZyfin’s GDP growth estimate. Theyare (with approximate weights inparentheses): Agriculture (19 %),Manufacturing (15 %), Construction(7 %) and Services (59 %). All sectorshave contributed to this sequentiallow growth of 4.2 % , with manufac-turing being the biggest culprit. Thissector registered negative growth of -0.6% SAAR in the second quarter.Construction was also a drag ongrowth, registering a SAAR of around2.6 percent, less than half its long runaverage of 7 %. Service sector growthslowed down as well to 6.3% SAAR,well below its long run and expectedaverage of 9% SAAR.

Speaking on the Q1 estimates, De-bopam Chaudhuri, VP Research,ZyFin said, “The decline in manufac-turing sector in June quarter was ex-pected given the slowdown inintermediate sector observed sinceApril 2013, with production of rawmetals like copper, aluminium andpig iron shrinking, compared to theprevious year.”

Highlighting the negative trend, hewent on to add “If one were to takethe IIP data and the conventional an-nual year-on-year growth, one ob-tains a negative growth rate of -1.5 %SAAR for Q1 FY’ 14 (or Q2 CY’13); thethird most negative on record for themanufacturing sector. The latestnumbers of ZyFin’s Business CycleIndicator (BCI) have signalled cau-tion, and the sequential GDP esti-mate for Q1 FY14 confirms theoccurrence of a sharp decelerationfrom the near 8 % level witnessed inQ4 FY13.”

The Food Security Bill, which willsubsidize food grains for 75% of

India’s rural population and 50% of thecountry’s urban population is creditnegative for the Indian governmentbecause it will raise governmentspending on food subsidies to about1.2% of GDP per year from an esti-mated 0.8% currently, exacerbatingthe government’s weak finances” saysMoody’s in a report released yesterday.

According to it “India’s fiscaldeficits are already higher than thoseof its emerging market peers. Be-cause the bill will take effect only inthe last few months of the fiscal yearthat ends March 2014, it will not sig-nificantly affect the fiscal 2014budget. However, it will raise futuresubsidy expenditure commitments, hindering the government’s ability toconsolidate its finances”.

In addition to the fiscal effect, thegovernment subsidies will con-tribute to India’s already high foodinflation.

As “we have noted previously,India’s fiscal deficits contribute to thecurrent account deficit by keepingdomestic demand high, thus in-creasing imports. Loose fiscal policyhas also underpinned recurrent in-flationary pressures. Inflation furtherwidens the current account deficit bylowering the competitiveness of ex-ports and of import -competing sec-tors. India’s current account deficithas widened in recent quarters, peaking at 6.8% of GDP in the quar-ter ending December 2012 from anaverage of 1% in the first half of the2000s. The almost 18% depreciationof the Indian rupee against the USdollar over the past three monthspartly reflects this widening, “ saidMoody’s.

Rising Food Subsidies Will ExacerbateMacroeconomic Imbalances, Says Moody’sBy A Business reporter

Do you really know whatyour capital is costing you? Is it

possible to sell your products belowcost and still make a profit? Canyou increase your profits withoutincreasing your investment in work-ing capital? How do you manage fi-nance effectively in recessionarytimes? Are you aware of the toolsand techniques of managing busi-ness finance?

To answer these Dr Anil Lamba, author of the bestselling book, Ro-mancing The Balance Sheet, willconduct ‘Understanding Num-bers’, a two day training programmeon Finance for Non-Finance Per-sons on September 13 & 14,2013 at MCA Club, BKC. Should Import Duty On Refined Palm Oil Be Raised?By A Business Reporter

With the current duty structurethe profitability margins and

liquidity of the domestic edible oilcompanies in general, will continueto be under pressure, says CARE rat-ings in a report on the sector. Ac-cording to it, ‘Fresh import duty onrefined palm oil is the only solutionfor the survival of refiners”.

India is one of the largest producersof oilseeds in the world with an area of26.54 million hectares under cultiva-tion producing 23-28 million tonnesof oil seeds every year depending onthe monsoons. The per capita con-

sumption, though grew by 8.1 per centover the last five years up to FY12, isconsiderably low as compared to theglobal average. As consumption ex-ceeds domestic production, India hasto largely depend on imports forbridging the demand-supply gap.

As India imports about 60% of itsdomestic consumption of edible oil,the free fall of the Rupee against USDin recent times will make importscostlier by about 10%. Since the edi-ble oil prices are already subduedand present palm oil prices are rul-ing at about 70% of the last year level, the ultimate impact on revision offinal domestic price will be marginal.

Your character of Manav speaksabout social change for good andyet urges the youth to achievesuccess any which way. Why thisdichotomy?Yes. Manav believes that greed isgood and greed in a person helpshim to progress and have a good lifeand this progress leads to his bet-terment and thus leads to the bet-terment of the country and societyin general.

You talk about greed. What isyour greed?Greed can be of many types. Toachieve more can be greed or tosustain what one has can be greed.Even if a person wants to work ateighty it can be considered as a pos-itive greed. To do good work canalso be considered as a greed be-cause it is good for the person andeveryone especially in today’s cir-cumstances where the rich and thepoor alike are unhappy and our filmspeaks about this subject.

Why do protests generally gowrong?Because that’s what our film is say-ing, that a revolution can only hap-pen if the youth of the country

come together for a cause and taketo the streets.Do you feel non-violent protestscan be taken up by youth? Our film denotes only non-violentprotests. I feel even the greatest iconof peace and non-violence Ma-hatma Gandhi was a very angryman because without anger youcannot fight for your ideals andfrustrated anger in a person canlead him to fight for his cause andlead him to victory. Gandhiji usedhis anger in a good manner and fora good cause.

What exactly is the theme ofSatyagraha? It’s the story of a young man whohas lost his father and a father whohas lost his young son and how theycome together and think togetherand fight for the same cause. So it isactually a father-son story.

Describe the character youportray.Manav is a modern guy, a big busi-nessman, a financial genius whowants to achieve more and moreprofits in any way possible and be-lieves in greed because itmakes youwork hard to progress in a positive

manner and we are not sending amessage to the youth that theyshould protest in any manner butthat they should realise the youthpower and how the youth can leadthe country to a great future.

Do you feel the message given inthe film will be accepted by theaudiences?Yes. I feel so because it is a simplemessage and the way it passed on tothe youthwill be accepted by societyand the whole country in general.

Do you do films for Prakash Jha?I do films only if it has any enter-tainment value. In fact, when Arak-shan was offered to me I told Jhathat the subject doesn’t have anypotential and I refused the offer andmy prediction came true becausemost of the audiences didn’t under-stand the film and it didn’t do well. But I realised the potential in Satya-graha and immediately said yes tothe film.

How has your experience beenworking with Bachchan saab?I have done many films with himbefore too and have learnt a greatdeal from him.

Ajay Devgn is very excited about his role of Manav in Prakash Jha’s forthcoming film Sayagrahaconsidering his long, fruitful association with producer director Prakash Jha. ADC’s Sandeep

Hattangadi caught up with the reclusive star for an impropmptu interview. Some excerpts.

Ajay plays Manav in Satyagraha!

You have lost weight and are looking superfit. What brought about this transformation?I have never looked better [smiles]. I follow a disciplinedlifestyle, eat once a day and do yoga. That’s about it. I havelearnt to live in themoment and love it. I feel so light-headedand free! I only want to do good work and more good work.

Why is there no end to the period of strugglefor you? The struggle just doesn’t seemto end!Nothing can keep you down except yourself. If yougive up, it’s the end of you. You can’t give up ifone film is not a hit. As I said, whatever I’ve beenoffered, I’ll perform to the best of my abilities. The rest is destiny. There’s no time to think now.

You have been given opportunitiestime and again by the industry.I’ve been very fortunate, despitemy films thatdidn’t do well in the past. Yes, it does affect theeconomics of the film. But all the filmmakers Ihave worked with have wanted to work withmeagain. An actor should always have the atti-tude of a newcomer.

Your forthcoming films?I make a guest appearance in AkshayKumar’s film. The reason I did his film is be-cause it is a big banner. As for Aditya Chopra’sfilm directed by Shaad Ali, I fell in love withthe subject and am looking forward to startshooting for it in September. Things are lookingup for me (smiles).

Many young viewers might not think much of Govinda but sample a lit-tle bit of Raja Babu, Sajan Chale Sasural or Coolie No 1 and witness thebrilliance of an actor who could not only make the ridiculous enjoyablebut also acceptable. Suneel V. Gaur and Rajesh V. Gaur met the ever op-timistic Govinda for an interview. Having known us for a long time, helaughed and greeted with his usual phrase for us: “Jahan na pahunchaRavi (sun), wahan pahuncha kavi (poet).” Excerpts:

I’ve been very fortunate: GovindaBy Chaitanya Padukone

‘Don’t underestimate the power of a common man ’, iswhat Shah Rukh Khan’s character reiterates in the re-

cent blockbuster hit Chennai Express. Yet again, the mega-might of the ‘aam aadmi’ as a collective rebellious forceagainst corruption, happens to be a part of Prakash Jha’sSatyagraha.

Winsome actress Amrita Rao who is part of the Satya-graha ensemble formidable cast which has AmitabhBachchan, Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor and ManojBajpai in stellar lead roles, appeared ecstatic. Wasn’tthe petite Amrita feeling ‘overshadowed’ amidst sucha galaxy of mega-stars .

Counters the exuberant Vivah girl, “On the con-trary, it’s my privilege to act with iconic superstarlike Amitabh Bachchan in Satyagraha, with whom Ihave scenes almost throughout the movie as I playhis daughter-in-law. It was such an amazing learningexperience for me working with Bachchan-Sir who ishumility and chivalry personified.

“In this political thriller, I play a modern qualifiedschool teacher called Sumitra who gets victimised, even as she ardently pursues her dreams. My topical, realistic rebel role has a strong common-man-connect,” insists the chirpy Rao who will continueto be seen in her patented pretty-woman-next-doorimage, although it’s a more intense role.

Meanwhile, Amrita, who was recently seen in awacko role in Jolly LLB, is also excited about her up-coming movie Singh Sahab The Great where sheplays a journalist-reporter opposite Sunny Deol.Notmany are aware that Amrita religiously lovesto watch the black ’n white Hindi movies of the50s era . Confides the Main Hoon Na actress,“It has always been my discreet dream towork in a recreatedmovie of the ‘blackandwhite’ golden era and dance on-screen to one of those racy retro-melodies,” smiles the cherubicactress who is euphoric that“today’s fast-paced ‘WhatsApp’generation will connect with the in-spiring patriotic song woven around the devotional musi-cal mantra Raghupati Raghav Rajaram (Gandhiji’sfavourite) when they watch Satyagraha.”

I’d love to act in a movie of the 50’s genre: Amrita Rao

Trauma by Another NameWhen the city and na-

tion is rocked bycrimes against

women, memory goes back tothe 1978 film Ghar, perhapsthe only Hindi film that dealtsensitively with the subject ofrape.

Written by Dinesh Thakurand directed by Manik Chat-terjee, the film told the story ofhow a loving couple’s life fallsto pieces when the wife israped. Vinod Mehra playedVikas and Rekha, his wifeAarti. Newly married, deeplyin love (beautiful Gulzar-RDBurman songs to express theiremotions) they are busy mak-ing a home. One day, they goto see a late night film—thetheatre was Chandan in Juhu, which back then was in a de-serted spot, over the years thearea has developed into abuzzing space.

They are attacked by agroup of drunks—Vikas is hiton the head and falls uncon-scious, and Aarti is raped. When they return from hospi-tal, she is in a state of trauma. She keeps reliving the incidenther mind and believes that sheis defiled. Her husband is un-able to reach into her space ofpain, because she thinks thatafter what happened, he couldnot possibly love her, his car-ing must be pity.Vikas’s tryingto pretend that nothing hap-pened is also a way of denial. There is also the fear thateveryone is looking at themand judging them, eventhough they are in no way toblame for what happened. One can imagine that must bewhat goes through the mindof a woman who has beenraped, particularly in a societywhere chastity is so highly val-ued. The subject was handledwith an empathy that has

rarely been seen in Hindi cin-ema. So disturbing was it, thatfor months afterwards, girlswould avoid going to that partof Juhu.

Till then, most Hindi filmsused rape as titillation or as aplot point to give the hero an

excuse to confront the villain, because his sister or wife hasbeen raped and he needs totake revenge. So many films

had the rape victim dying orcommitting suicide, because apatriarchal society could notcontemplate a ‘normal’ life fora woman whose ‘izzat’ hadbeen lost. Occasionally, thehero who ‘accepted’ such awoman was projected as anoble soul.

Amiya Chakrabarty’s 1953film with the unsavourytitle Patita (fallen woman),starring Dev Anand and UshaKiron was a rare film in itstime, in which a woman whois raped is accepted into soci-ety with her child, even if theman who loves her has tolaunch elaborate charade toconvince his mother. Therehave been other filmslike Ram Teri Ganga Maili HoGayi, Prem Rog (both by RajKapoor) that make a case, aftermuch melodrama, for the ‘ac-ceptance’ of a raped womanby a man and consequently,

by society. There is the matterof the terminology used infilms—izzat lut gayi, barbadho gayi, zinda laash ban gayi, aisi zindagi se maut behtar, etcthat convey that rape is theend of a woman’s existence.

Shabana Azmi once recalledan instance when she had toargue with the director of oneof her films, in which the char-acter of her daughter wasraped and was expected tosuddenly appear in blackclothes and look tragic. Sha-bana wanted the girl to wearregular clothes and be reas-sured that what had happenedwas not her fault.

It has become even moreimperative now to deal withthe issue of violence againstwomen with maturity and un-derstanding, by first doingaway with the term “izzat lutgayi.” The very concept of ho-nour has to change.

In the backdrop of the Mumbai gan-grape case, actress Kareena

Kapoor feels that its time to reassessthings and bring in stricter laws to en-sure women safety in India.

“It’s difficult to be secure in India. It is not safe. I think we need tochange our laws, we need to re-assess things. Because the youth ofthe country is in anger... I am hopingthrough them we will be able to re-assess laws of this nation,” Ka-reena told PTI.

“These unfortunate inci-dents used to happen insmall places.. And now inMumbai. Rapes are happen-ing all over the country…Thereare places where things are notgetting reported... Maybe I feel itis because of lack of education,”she said.

“My sister has a six-year-olddaughter so we want her to besafe when she grows up. And Iam hoping that when shegrows up there will be somekind of change in the societyat least by then she wouldbe 16,” she added.

The 32-year-old actorfeels media has a responsi-bility to disseminate infor-mation and at the sametime highlight the guilty but“cinema cannot provide asolution to any problem ingeneral.”

“Cinema is not meant to dosomething, the government mustdo something.

We are actors we are not politi-cians. It is a bonus if there is an in-spirational feeling among peopleafter watching a film. But ultimatelyits a film so it is meant to entertainpeople,” she said.

pears that your opponents have theupper hand, but you will win the day even-tually. Handle the situation in a dignifieddiplomatic manner and you would havewon the admiration of all concerned. Youwill be entertaining everyone till quite lateat night. Trying to please everyone couldtell on your nerves especially after a toughday at work.

LEO (July 22 - August 21): Lookforward to new developments andwork offers. Take your time to pick

and choose what you really want. Apurchase of some property or house will bean asset that you have been planning forlong and are now within your grasp. How-evermake sure to buy a house having readypossession. Take time to choose what youreally want from life. Strong romantic influ-ences around are tempting. You could getdrawn into an association with a person

who could become difficult to forget.

LIBRA (September 22 - October22): You may be feeling a littleunder the weather for no apparent

reason at all. Subconsciously youmay be seeking a change, which does notseem to be happening right now. If youare patient you will hear some good newslater in the day which gladdens yourheart. Destiny at times works faster if weleave burning issues alone and get onwith life. A good time to party hard andmeet your friends.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 -December 20): Wait a while be-fore thinking of making any

changes in your working environ-ment. A change of job or work at this junc-ture is not advisable. Do not be carriedaway by attractive promises of financialgains and avoid investing any money inventures about which you know very little.

AQUARIUS (January 20 - Feb-ruary 18): Personal initiatives willhelp a lot, but joint ventures or

teamwork could be more beneficial.Someone from overseas will be in touch.Keep your mind open to new ideas andviews. Financially it is a rewarding day.You can look forward good news in themail. TAURUS (April 21 - May 20):Though you are doing very well foryourself at work youmay still suffer a

few anxious moments regarding a newwork proposal. against time to meet deadlines. Bepatient with those who exasperate you.Handle finances with great care. All thehard work that you put in will help you inthe long run. CAPRICORN (December 21- January 19): No doubt that youhave been working very hard both at

work and at your relationships, butsomehow you have been running into prob-lems andmisunderstandings. However a cer-tain development todaymaymake you realizethat your efforts were not in vain. Dinesh, two otherboxers allege bias inWorld C’ship trials

PPAATTIIAALLAA:: The selection of the Indian teamfor the World Boxing Championships hasrun into a controversy with three pugilists, including Arjuna awardee Dinesh Kumar, threatening to take the panel to court evenas Olympian Akhil Kumar vowed to sue oneof them for dragging his name into thefurore.Dinesh (91kg), Dilbag Singh (69kg) and

Praveen Kumar (+91kg) have alleged thatthe coaches and the selection committeeignored them, despite their "goodperformance" in the trial bouts whichconcluded yesterday.Asian Games silver-medallist Manpreet

Singh (91kg), Asian Championships silver-medallist Mandeep Jangra and reigningnational champion Satish (+91kg) were theboxers who were picked ahead of them forthe October 11 to 27 World Championshipsin Kazakhstan. The three dissenting boxerswere beaten in exciting open trial boutsyesterday in front of a packed hall of fellowboxers and a selection panel whichincluded veterans such as Mehtab Singhand Padam Bahadur Mal besides IndianBoxing Federation Secretary GeneralRajesh Bhandari. "We will take the selection committee to

the court for this unfair decision," Dineshsaid at a press conference.

‘CHHOTA TYSON’ AT CROSSROADSAFTER RAVAGED BY INJURIESA colossal name in Indian boxing despitehis diminutive frame, M Suranjoy Singh iscurrently at a crossroads after failing tomake the cut for the World Championshipsdue to an injury-ravaged body which couldnot recreate the magic that gave him thenickname 'Chhota Tyson', at the just-concluded national trials here. The 27-year-old is best remembered for

winning an unprecedented seven back-to-back international gold medals, includingthe top honours at the AsianChampionships and the CommonwealthGames, between 2009 and 2010. But lifechanged drastically for him after he lost hismother in December 2010. His formdipped and the last major internationalevent in which he made his presence feltwas the 2012 World Military Games wherethe Manipur-lad settled for a bronze medal. His physical breakdown started with

minor niggles becoming majorcomplications so much so that he had togo under the knife for a troubling knee, which is getting better but not yet a 100per cent. "Life changed completely at theend of 2010. Losing my mother wasmassive blow and it took me a lot of time tocome to terms with it. And eventually someinjuries also began to hamper me. I stilldon't feel fit," Suranjoy, who competed non-stop between 2009-10 in the 52kgdivision, told PTI in an interview.

BARCELONA, SPAIN: LionelMessi missed a late penaltyattempt before Barcelona

clinched the Spanish Super Cupdespite being held to a 0-0 drawby 10-man Atletico Madrid.Messi had a chance to put the

result beyond doubt in 89th butfired his penalty kick off thecrossbar to finish a forgettablenight for the Argentina star yes-terday.Barcelona eventually claimed

the trophy on away goals follow-ing the 1-1 draw in the openingleg last week. Atletico's disci-plined defense stifled aBarcelona's attack featuring Ney-mar making his first starting ap-pearance for his new club. And the visitors enjoyed the

best scoring opportunities otherthan Messi's penalty attempt butweren't able to get the criticalgoal, mainly because ofBarcelona goalkeeper VictorValdes. Atletico's chances werehurt in the 81st when Filipe Luiswas given a red card for appar-ently hitting Dani Alves. Thescoreless draw meant Neymar'sfirst-leg goal was the difference."I'm happy with the title. When-

ever there is a title in play whatcounts is winning it," Barcelonacoach Gerardo Martino said. "Butas far as the team goes, I want to

see more. Above all in these typesof games, we need to find moreprecision and the ability to createmore spaces."Messi was back for Barcelona

after missing one game due to aleft thigh injury sustained in theopening Super Cup match lastweek. But the four-time worldplayer of the year was not hisusual dynamic self, lacking hisspark and finishing touch. He un-characteristically scuffed a close-

range shot off a pass from SergioBusquets to start his off night.Martino gave Neymar his first

start in his fourth official game forBarcelona since his move fromSantos in June. Messi and Neymarhad only previously been on thepitch together for seven minutesbecause Martino said he wantedto ease the 21-year-old Brazilstriker into his new team. Butthose eager to see the two togetherwere disappointed. While Messi

was below par, Neymar wasn'table to exploit his speed and drib-bling against Atletico's physicaldefense."I think that individually they

both played well," Martino saidof the pair. "It's true they didn'tfind one another or combinemuch. With Neymar playing onthe left and Messi tending tomove out to the right, they are faraway. But I don't doubt they willfind each other."

dians will be high on confidenceafter securing their semifinal berthwith an unbeaten record. The Sar-dar Singh-led side spanked debu-tants Oman 8-0, followed by winsover defending champions SouthKorea (2-0) and Bangaldesh (9-1)

to top Pool B.Malaysia, on the other hand, fin-

ished second in Pool A after theywon against Chinese Taipei andJapan but lost to Pakistan in theirPool A engagements. Fully awarethat two more wins here would en-sure their ticket for next year’sWorld Cup at The Hague, Nether-lands, the 11th ranked Indians can-not afford to relax in the businessend of the eight-nation tourna-ment, and especially against anunpredictable side like Malaysia.India, who never missed out on aWorld Cup berth since the tourna-ment’s introduction in 1971, willlike to avoid the repeat of yet an-other debacle after the 2008 Beijing

Olympics, where the Indian teamhad failed to qualify for the firsttime in the history of the game.Having played Malaysia on nu-

merous occasions, the Indians, who start as favourites, know verywell that the hosts on their givenday can upset top teams of theworld. Another factor which willwork against India in the semifinalis home support. “It is a very cru-cial match for us in the recenttimes. Malaysia is tough oppo-nent. You cannot predict them. Wewill have to play against the entirestadium tomorrow as they willhave home support behind them,”Sardar said ahead of the semifinalencounter.

BANGALORE: Saina Nehwalmay be the reigning queenof Indian badminton but

Pusarla Venkat Sindhu, the 18-year-old from Hyderabad repre-senting Awadhe Warriorsprovided strong indication thatshe is one for the future, with an-other impactful performancedowning All England championTine Baun with a measure of easeat 21-16 21-13 to level the scores1-1 in the well-fought IBL semifi-nals against Mumbai at the Kan-teerava Indoor Stadium inBangalore. Earlier top men’s player in the

world, Malaysia Lee Chong Weiproved far too strong forAwadhe’s RMV Gurusai Duttwinnng 21-15 21-7 to provideMasters a 1-0 lead. Buoyed by the presence of

owners —- legendary SunilGavaskar and Telegu star Nagar-juna cheering from the sidelines,Lee didn’t disappoint them with aclinical effort. At the first break, the world No

1 lead 7-4 but Gurusai reducedthe margin to 12-14 at the secondbreak. Gurusai provided Lee withsome anxious moments withdown-the-line smashes and im-pressive net play.

Although he committed nineunforced errors compared to fiveby Gurusai, the experiencedMalaysian bagged the first game21-15.As for Gurusai, he hung in

there after forcing some long ral-lies, but could not breach the ex-traordinary racquet workdisplayed by the Malaysian. After losing the first game, Gu-

rusai came under far too muchpressure as he conceded the firstbreak of the second game 2-7against the Masters’ icon player.Lee capitalised on the retreat-

ing confidence of Gurusai and

played some magnificent bad-minton, reminiscent of a balladpranced by a beautiful damsel, leading 14-2 in the second break.“I’m very happy after the win.

I’m thankful to all the fans for alltheir support. I think now ourteam is in a good position to reach the final,” Lee said

after beating Gurusai.Sindhu has been going from

strength to strength, havingbeaten players ranked above herin this premier edition of the IBL.Today she encountered an out ofsorts Tine Baun who uncharac-teriscally made errors galore even

as Sindhu smashed her way to adecisive and deserved win. Buoyed by their icon players

Sindhu’s success, who said afterbeating Tine Baun, “I’m thankfulto the crowd for all the support. My coaches told me how to playmy game. As an icon player, I tellall my team players to give theirbest,” the men’s doubles pairingof Markis Kido and Mathias Boe

Lanky Russian Vladimir Ivanovthough given some anxious mo-ments in the first game pulled offa 21-20 21-19 win over KSrikkanth to level scores at 2-2setting the stage for a grippingdecider in the mixed doubles en-counter. In a tension-packed tiewhich saw Srikanth give his all,the Russian just about managedto pip the Indian in the first gamewhich in fact saw Srikanth havematch point. The Russian Rocket as Ivanov is

called heaved a huge sigh of reliefas an overtly aggressive Srikanthcalled the tune for the major partof the first game, only to see theRocket surge ahead in the tenseclosing stage of the game.
