Production and Market of Styrenicsin Russia and Ukraine in 2012

A production plant for AlphaporTM EPS in Perm became the first of its kind in Russia

The terms “styrenics” or “styrenic polymers” are used to describe a family of major plastic products thatuse styrene as their key building block. This family of chemical products includes polystyrene (PS),expandable polystyrene (EPS), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene co-polymer (ABS) and styrene acrylonitrileco-polymer (SAN). All styrenics except SAN, are commercially produced in Russia. Ukraine, the secondeconomy among the former Soviet republics, manufactures only PS (GPPS and HIPS) and EPS.

Russia

In 2012 Russian companies produced378,088 tonnes of polystyrene and styreneco-polymers in primary forms. Figure 1shows the Russian monthly output of styrenicpolymers in 2012. In particular, in December2012, the production of styrenics totalled34,061 tonnes and in Q4, 2012 — 103,071tonnes.

The Russian production of polystyrene lastyear showed a 12% YOY increase, to 362,000tonnes. The rise is mainly due to the launchof the second phase of the production ofAlphaporTM expandable polystyrene at Sibur-Khimprom's plant in Perm, which wasofficially declared operational in October2012.

The second phase began in July 2010 whilethe test works for the first phase of expansionwere still underway.

Construction of the first phase began inearly 2008 and the facilities came online inNovember 2010. The construction work onthe second phase had been completed byJanuary 2012.

The production capacity for AlphaporTM

EPS had been increased two-fold from50,000 tpy to 100,000 tpy.

With the launch of the second phase, thecompany had accomplished the chainrequired for the production of styrene at thecurrent site. The production chain consists

of ethyl-benzene, styrene and expandablepolystyrene units.

The total investment in the expansion wasabout RUR 8.6bn (USD 286m), includingUSD 31m for the second phase.

The engineering, procurement andconstruction management contract for theexpansion project was awarded to ChemistryChemnitz (Chemnitz, Germany). The samecontractor was also involved in installing amonitoring system for producing EPS duringthe first phase. The general design for the plantwas provided by VNIPIneft JSC (Research and

Design Institute for Oil Refining andPetrochemical Industry, Moscow).

Nizhnekamskneftekhim, another bigRussian petrochemicals group located in theRepublic of Tatarstan, launched a newmanufacturing unit for ABS plastics inNovember 2012 as part of its expansionprogramme aiming to increase the domesticsupply of ABS to Russia's growingautomotive industry. It produces about60,000 tonnes of the material per year.

Nizhnekamskneftekhim is also building anew polystyrene production line with a

capacity of 50,000 tpy at its Nizhnekamskmanufacturing complex.

With the new line, the company will haveat its disposal four PS manufacturing lines. The first three ones came on stream one byone in 2003, 2006 and 2008.

The company is also planning to introducethe latest technology of Toyo EngineeringCorporation for its proposed fourth unit.

The company will hire the services of ToyoEngineering Corporation for detailed designand equipment supply of the unit.

The new PS line is on target for mid-2013.Meanwhile, Penoplex, the only

manufacturer of extrusion polystyrene inRussia, plans to invest RUR 700m (EUR18m) in buiding a plant for the production ofheat insulation materials in the Tula region.

The company will fund the project by itselfand the plant’s capacity will be 650,000 cubicmetres of heat insulation per year.

The plant will be Penoplex’s eighthmanufacturing facility, giving the firm a 60%share in the Russian insulation materials market.

The firm has six production facilities – inKirishi, Taganrog, Novosibirsk, Perm,Khabarovsk and Cheremkhovo – and one inKazakhstan.

The Russian imports of GPPS in 2012soared 58% for 2012 and made up 65,000tonnes. The products of Styrosolutionaccounted for the lion's share of the supplies(57.4% from the total imports or 38,000

tonnes in physical terms). Styroloution wasfounded through a merger of styrenebusinesses except for PCV-S ÏÑÂ-Ñ) ofBASF (50%) and INEOS (50%). Followingthe results of 2012, supplies of Styrolutionskyrocketed by 167% as compared with thecombined exports of BASF and INEOS in2011. Almost 6,000 tonnes of GPPS or 8%of the Russian imports were delivered byTaiwan-based Taita Chemical. The latterraised its supplies by 22% against 2011.

Ukraine-based Stirol (Horlivka, Donetskregion) expanded its exports of GPPS by 3.4times in comparison with 2011. The significantrise of the Ukrainian imports occurred becauseof an increase in demand from polystyreneprocessors located in the south of Russia.

Ukraine

In December 2012, Ukrainian productionof polystyrene increased by 13.2% or 156tonnes against December 2011 to 1,337tonnes (see Table 2).

In December 2012, polystyrene outputdecreased by 33.9% or 686 tonnes againstNovember 2012.

In 2012, production of polystyrenedecreased by 11% or 2,276 tonnes against2011 to 18,402 tonnes.

In November 2012, production ofpolystyrene in the country increased by29.9% or 466 tonnes against November 2011to 2,023 tonnes.

Concern Stirol PJSC (Horlivka, Donetskregion) is sole Ukrainian polystyrene-maker.

In 2011, production of polystyrene in thecountry rose by 26.3% or 4,301 tonnesagainst 2010 to 20,675 tonnes.
