Donavant (educational outreach and committee chair) recommended Henderson for the appointment.

The UT Martin Department of Music held its first annual Contemporary Music Festival, Nov. 16-18, featuring the music of guest composer Dr. Viet Cuong. This three-day event began Nov. 16 with the department’s Music and Literature Concert in the Paul Meek Library, where students in the department’s Contemporary Music Group performed new pieces inspired by literary works. On Friday, Cuong gave a master class on compositional process in the afternoon, and ensembles performed pieces written and rehearsed by student composers

Dr. Angela Ammerman (top), assistant professor of music, was involved in these activities during November: Nov. 17 - Gave a presentation at the Virginia Music Educators Conference on Engaging English Language Learners. Ammerman discussed ways to reach students who have limited language skills through an increase in non-verbal cues, the selection of culturally relevant musical works, and the fostering of an identity as a musician; Nov. 10 - Was a featured conductor for the All East Orchestra where she prepared over 70 middle school string players for a concert. Ammerman worked with the students over the span of two days to incorporate improvisation, electric instruments, and even choreography into the performance for optimal audience engagement; Nov. 6 - The Department of Music hosted over 160 elementary musicians for the annual Treble Honor Choir. Directed by Ammerman, students spent the entire day at UTM rehearsing music and preparing for an evening concert. Music education majors performed music from around the world; Nov. 4 - The Department of Music hosted high school string players from all across West Tennessee for an All West Orchestra Prep Day. Micah Barnes (middle), Dr. Michael Mathenia (bottom) and Ammerman created and hosted this event in order to prepare students for their All West Auditions.

A French Embassy portrait of Dr. Bob Peckham, professor of French emeritus, appears in the Sept. 25 issue of Frenchlanguage.frenchculture.org (subscription issue), outlining recent advocacy projects. In recent activities, Peckham was a consultant for the Associated Departments of Foreign Languages in data context from the most recent Modern Language Association college foreign-language

enrollment survey. On Nov. 17, he was a session organizer and participant in the annual meeting of the American Conference of the Teaching of Foreign Languages at the Nashville Music City Center; the conference was the largest in the world this year with 8,000 attendees. The session's focus was on researched benefits of students singing in class, and diversity from the French-centered cultural model through music from a variety of countries in the French-Speaking world. The same day Peckham attended, as a member of the nominating committee, the Jacqueline Elliott award ceremony. This ceremony, held at Nashville’s Omni hotel, announces and honors the college foreign-language teacher of the year in the Tennessee Foreign Language Teacher Association.

in the department’s first Student Works Concert that evening. To conclude the weekend's events, students from the Honors Program attended a lecture by Cuong on Saturday afternoon, and UTM student ensembles performed a concert of his music that evening, featuring a world premiere that was commissioned by the Department of Music. This event was coordinated by Dr. Michael Mathenia, adjunct instructor, and the Department of Music in collaboration with the Paul Meek Library and the Honors Program.

You Tell Me

•Question – I’ve seen UT Martin billboards around West Tennessee, and now I see a different billboard that features both UT Martin and Dyersburg State Community College. The billboard is located on Highway 51 between Union City and Troy and can be seen on the left side when traveling south. What is the story behind this billboard?

•Answer – Dyersburg State approached UT Martin in September about sharing the billboard space to promote transferring using the Tennessee Transfer Pathway. The message (“Start Here > Go There”) encourages students who start at Dyersburg State to transfer to UT Martin to complete a bachelor’s degree. Dyersburg State is paying for the billboard space; the design emerged from a cooperative effort between Dyersburg State’s Office of Public Information and UT Martin’s Office of University Relations.
