UT Martin’s Bachelor of Science degree program in engineering has been reaccredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, the global accreditor of college and university programs in applied and natural science, computing, engineering and engineering technology.

Professor Andrew Brown, lecturer of communications, visited the Tennessee Boy’s Ranch in Millington on Sept. 28 with four seniors in his integrated marketing and strategic communications class. The trip consisted of an on-site listening tour and mini marketing audit. The students will now meet with their teams,

develop a strategic marketing plan, and competitively pitch their ideas back to the Boy’s Ranch leaders in early December. This opportunity provides the non-profit with professional consulting while also giving the students a hands-on learning experience and allowing them to serve the West-Tennessee community.

(l-r) Bill Waterman served as principal euphonium, Charles Lewis as principal flute and Douglas Owens as bari sax.

Dr. Bill Waterman, director of athletic bands; Charles Lewis, lecturer of music; and Dr. Douglas Owens, associate professor of music, performed in the inaugural concert for The Winds of Distinction on Sept. 30. The newly formed professional wind band based

near Paducah, Ky., is comprised of professors from various universities and regional musicians. The group performed at the Clemons Fine Arts Center in Paducah, Kentucky, and plans to add more concerts in the near future.

This past summer, Dr. Nathan Howard, associate professor of history, presented two papers at national conferences. He gave the first paper as part of the North American Patristics

Society annual meeting May 25 in Chicago. The paper was titled “Basil of Caesarea as Soldier-Theologian.” He delivered the second presentation at the Christian Scholars conference June 7 at Lipscomb University in Nashville. The title of this paper was “Sacred Virility in Basil of Caesarea.” Both presentations discussed how prominent bishops in post-Constantinian eastern Rome (late 300s) shaped their identity as clergy according to classical Greek expectations of masculinity. Howard argued that elite bishops identified themselves with an idealized manhood that recalled the ancient warriors, athlete, and orators of the Homeric and classical Greek past.

Dr. Richard Robinson, associate professor of communications and WUTM 90.3 faculty adviser, and

Rodney Freed, instructor of communications, attended the Tennessee Association of Broadcasters Annual Conference, Aug. 15-16, at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Murfreesboro. Whit Adamson (far left), TAB president, is congratulated by Freed at the event where Adamson was honored by the organization for 25 years of service to the association and a 45-year broadcasting career. Freed currently serves on the TAB board of directors, representing non-commercial broadcasters, and also serves as president of the WLJT-DT board of directors.

YoUTMs provide a quality engineering education.”

The UT Martin engineering program offers concentrations in civil, electrical, industrial, mechanical and manufacturing engineering.

Sought worldwide, ABET’s voluntary peer-review process is highly respected because it adds critical value to academic programs in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines, where quality, precision and safety are of the utmost importance.

Developed by technical professionals from ABET’s member societies, ABET criteria focus on what students experience and learn. ABET accreditation reviews look at

A BANNER PROJECT – New messaging banners are being placed on light poles around the quadrangle and near residence halls, replacing the first such banners that were purchased in 2015. New this fall are “Welcome Alumni” banners purchased by the Office of Alumni Relations that will be removed following homecoming and reused in future years. The messaging banners are purchased through the Office of University Relations budget with major support from the Division and Finance and Administration and the Physical Plant. The Physical Plant places the suspension brackets and also suspends the banners in a two- to three-day project. The banners were designed by David Deaton in university relations. Earlier, new road banners were purchased and placed along University Street.

•Question – Is there a policy on the use of drones at the university?•Answer – Yes, the University of Tennessee System has approved policy SA0950 – Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS or drones) – as of Feb. 1, 2017. This policy applies to all persons who use or intend to use UAS either on university property or in connection with university employment. All persons must obtain approval for the operation of a UAS from the campus UAS coordinator prior to operating a UAS on university property. University units must notify the Office of Risk Management about UAS purchased with university funds. Further, university employees who plan to design, build, modify, and/or dismantle UAS must give notice to UT Martin’s Export Control Office. Ted Council, in the Office of Environmental Health and Safety, is UT Martin’s UAS coordinator. Dr. Joan K. West, Office of Research, Grants, and Contracts, is the university’s export control officer. The complete policy and procedures can be found on UT Martin’s Environmental Health and Safety webpage.
