Math The students have just finished an exciting study of geometry. They learned a lot of vo-

cabulary and explored lines, angles, triangles, and quadrilaterals. The students also

learned how to use a protractor to measure angles. They are just beginning one of our

biggest units of the year: fractions! Students in Mrs. DuVall's and Mr. Lyke's math

class are making use of interactive notebooks to help them organize vocabulary, tips,

and resources to help make math easier to understand.

Science The students are currently engaged in an

exciting study of magnetism. Students are

experimenting with a variety of objects to

learn about what magnets are attracted to

and what they are not attracted to. Many

students began the unit thinking magnets

stuck to metal but have now learned that

magnets only stick to items made mostly of

iron or steel. Students will also explore the

force of attraction or repulsion and deter-

mine how to measure the force of a mag-

net.

ELA & Social Studies ELA and Social Studies really meshed in 4th grade as our students have been learning about Colonial America in many dif-

ferent ways. In addition to our Social Studies text book, the students read, discussed, and wrote in response to the nonfiction

books If Y ou Lived in Colonial Times and The Scoop on Clothes, Homes, and Daily Life in Colonial America. The students

did many comparison activities to see how life has changed since colonial times and how some things are very similar to today.

The students also took part in a deep study of colonial tradespeople. They

learned about what different

trades did, the tools used, and the

skills needed. They al-

so discovered that many of the

trades relied on each other. This

lead to discussion on what it

meant to be interdependent and

how important all members of

the colonial village were to each

other.

At the end of this study, stu-

dents created posters describing

their tradespeople and presented

them to their classmates. In Mr.

Smith's classroom the students presented their posters in a Gallery-Walk while

their peers listened and took notes. Additionally the students wrote expository

paragraphs describing their tradesperson using evidence from articles and a

podcast.

Free Summer Meals

for Kids

Will your church,

organization or summer program

serve children this summer?

More than 7,000 Steuben County children rely

on free and reduced-price school meals. When

school is out, many of these children don’t get

the food they need.

You can help! Free meals for children in your

program 18 years of age and younger may be

available from the Addison Central School

District Food Service through the USDA

Summer Food Service Program (SFSP).

For more information, contact Pam Drumm at

607-359-1113 or via email at

[email protected] or Julie Mitchell at

359-1124 or via email at

The Red Cross

Cub will be hold-ing a blood drive

at the high school on March

9th from 8am-2pm. Contact Sonya English at 359-2241 to make an appointment.

Sixteen year olds may donate blood, potentially dou-

bling the amount of blood donated by high school students.

High school students currently account for 13% of the

blood collected in the New York-Penn Region of the American Red Cross, donating almost 50,000 pints of

blood last year. But since the Region must collect at

least 7,000 pints each week in order to meet the needs of local hospital patients, the eligibility of 16-

year-olds could help save thousands of additional lives.

All sixteen-year-old donors are required to bring a

completed consent form with them to their donation appointment. These forms require the initials and

signature of a parent or legal guardian. Consent forms are available from Mrs. English, or can be

downloaded directly from the American Red Cross website at redcrossblood.org/students/sixteen/nyp.
