    Lesson Description for DayEdit

Students will be introduced to addition and will perform tasks withincenters to help familiarize them with the process of addition.

, sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbalexplanations, expressions, or equations.

K.OA.2. Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and

subtract within 10, e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the

    problem.

K.OA.3. Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more

than one way, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each

    decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 5 = 2 3 and 5 = 4 1).

K.OA.4. For any number from 1 to 9, find the number that makes 10

when added to the given number, e.g., by using objects or drawings,

and record the answer with a drawing or equation.

K.OA.5. Fluently add and subtract within 5.

    GoalsUnit Goals:Edit

    1. TLW recognize the meaning of addition.

    2. TLW begin to manipulate numbers by simple addition.

    Lesson Goals:Edit

    1. To use concrete objects to solve addition problems

    3. To use pictures to solve addition problems

    4. To use objects to solve addition problems

    5. To use pictures to complete addition sentences

    6. To create and act out addition stories using objects

    7. To use the problem solving strategy make a model to solve problemsBack to Top

MethodsAnticipatory Set:EditShare lesson goals and objectives with students: they will be

introduced to addition concepts and will complete addition sentencesby working in groups and individually.

The teacher will present students with the following problem: It's yourbirthday and you have invited 3 friends over for a party. Your momtells you that she has invited 2 of your cousins to join the party. Youyou need to by enough birthday hats for each person at yourparty. How many hats will you need in all?

The teacher will then ask students why they think addition isimportant in their everyday lives. The teacher will lead students in adiscussion of when they think they would need to use addition. Theteacher will allow students to discuss this in small groups.

The teacher will then show a video explaining simple addition.

Introduce and Model New Knowledge:EditThe teacher will chose a student to hold an addition sign and anotherstudent to hold an equal sign. Students will then be chosen to act asnumbers within the addition problem (ex. three students will standbefore the addition sign and 1 after to model 3 1=). Students will thenmove to the right of the equal sign to reveal the answer.

Teacher will use SMART Notebook software to model the proposedquestion (birthday hats) from the anticipatory set. The teacher will

then use the SMART Notebook lesson to model other additionproblems on the board. Students will be asked to visit the board tointeract with the lesson and help to solve the problems.

Teacher will model on the board how students will create additionproblems by rolling each die to fill in numbers for the problem.

Provide Guided Practice:EditAfter modeling several problems using dice on SMARTboard, teacher will divide students into small groups and presenteach student group with 2 giant dice and an addition recordingsheet. Groups will be monitored as they take turns rolling dice andrecording addition problems on sheet.

Provide Independent Practice:EditTeacher will set up 4 centers for students and assign groups to eachcenter. Students will be given 10 minutes to complete each center.

Center 1: Students will use giant dice to complete addition recordingsheet as practiced during lesson.

Center 2: SMART Board center. Students will use the SMARTBoard to play addition games on websites.

Center 3: Giant Number Line: Group of students take turns pullingcards with numbers from 1 to 5. Students pull first card and move to

that number on the line. They pull a second card and move thatmany more spaces. Students observe the number where they landand other members of the group record the problem and answer.

Center 4: Adding Bears. Students turn over cards with additionproblems. They model the problems by representing each numberwith bear counters. They then move all the counters to the right of

the equal sign to reveal the answer.

    Wrap-UpEdit

With the help of the teacher, each group will be asked to demonstratean addition problem from their center using the "human additionproblem" activity.

Teacher will ask students to recall why addition is important in theireveryday lives. Students will share their new beliefs with others attheir tables.

AssessmentFormative/Ongoing Assessment:EditObservation and questioning during independent activities.

Visit centers to monitor success and correct any errors.

Assess student understanding by monitoring closing activity sharing.

Summative/End Of Lesson Assessment:EditAssess student understanding by reviewing any written work.Teacher will use following questions to evaluate work:

    Are answers accurate?

Does work show a clear understanding of the process of addition?

Does work portray a recognition of the meaning of addition?
