South Amboy Business Meeting 11/5/14SOUTH AMBOY - One of the items discussed at the meet-ing pertained to street open-ing permits vs. zoning appli-cations. At previous meetings, residents had complained that they were paying fees for work that was not done on their property. Business Administrator Ca-mille Tooker said, “The City Attorney was asked to clear up the ordinance pertaining to work done by residents on their property. Some residents were given out Zoning appli-cations by mistake which did not pertain to the work that was done.” “If the residents did not touch the curtain or apron in front of their property a zoning permit was not needed. They will get the difference of the overpay-ment of the incorrect applica-tions that they filled out.”

Another resolution was ap-proving emergency appro-priation for Employee Group Health. B. A. Camille Tooker said, “The C.F.O. said the emergency appropriation of $136,000 to the Employee Group Health was because of the hiring of new employees.” Complaints about sewer and water payments discrepan-cies by two residents were ex-plained and resolved. One complaint was from an owner at 271 First St. In Sep-tember 2013 Middlesex Water replaced the meters and short-ly thereafter the remote for the meters broke and they were unable to obtain any readings. The problem was fixed, but when it was repaired, the me-ter gave a reading for all nine months of usage per apartment instead of one quarter. A spreadsheet was provided

by the resident. They believed there was an incorrect reading by Middlesex Water Company. Because of this discrepancy and the proof provided by the resident, they would get credit on their next bill. The NJDOT awarded the City a grant in the amount of $25,042.23. This grant came from the Highway Safety Fund/Safe Corridors. Additional road improve-ments were made. One im-provement included line strip-ping. The total contract price had decreased by $208.15 for a total contract price of $27,626.85. Unnecessary bid items were removed because of field conditions at the time of construction. Councilman Donald Apple-gate was absent.

Thank You for the

Opportunity Thanks to the voters of Perth Amboy, two years ago I was given the opportunity to serve as a member of this board. I decided to run because I had a goal of providing the best edu-cation for our children, which I believe should be of the ut-most importance to all of us...not just parents. The future of this city and country is in the hands of our children. Unfor-tunately, by every available measure, we know that the schools of Perth Amboy have been at the bottom for a long time, and I wanted to help change that. I came onto this board with great hopes that we could work together to improve our schools. But instead of finding a group of community lead-ers committed to improving education, I found total chaos. This district was in turmoil all due to what I feel was a char-acter assassination of the pre-vious superintendent. Some may say that the problem was caused by her when she spoke to the media about the state of

our schools. I am of the belief that if we do not face the truth of what is not working, we will never be able to succeed. It is true that I am not a per-son who measures her words or is politically correct. It is also true that I am not a hypo-crite, liar or one who sits back and allows illegal things to go on for political self-preserva-tion. I still care deeply about our community and about the education our children are re-ceiving. I still believe that we can change for the better. But I decided not to run this year because of one reason...Natalia, my granddaughter. I want to enjoy her at this time.

Therefore I am not able to give all the time and energy this district will need to fight all that is wrong with this board. I encourage all people to be attentive to what they are be-ing told and to ask many ques-tions. I wish the new board mem-bers the best and hope they do get the answers they need to make positive changes. Thanks again to the voters who gave me this opportunity to serve.

A Step Away From

Civilization On November 13, the New Jersey General Assembly took a major step away from civi-lization and towards barbarity by enacting legislation pro-moting suicide. A.2270 authorizes physicians to prescribe lethal medication overdoses by which a patient kills himself. The medical profession, which is about therapy and healing, would be fundamentally prostituted by this bill. Suicide is not thera-

peutic and death is not healing. Confusion about such basic ideas can be fatal. Proponents of the bill argue that this bill is about “rights” but it is society’s first and fore-most right and duty to protect people’s most basic rights, which above all includes their lives. When direct killing of any kind becomes legally and socially acceptable, every-one’s rights are threatened. This bill most directly threat-ens the most vulnerable: the ill, the aged, the disabled. It clearly sends the message: their lives are, at least some-times, not worth living.

Such radical embrace of the culture of death should not come on the basis of a 41-31 vote. To his credit, Assem-blyman Craig Coughlin voted “no” on this bill. To his shame, John Wisniewski voted “yes.” As a fellow Polish-Amer-ican, I find the description of such legislators coined by the contemporary Polish philoso-pher Zbigniew Stawrowski most appropriate: Wisniewski and his 40-other colleagues are “sleek barbarians.” I urge Senator Vitale not to join them.Sincerely (Dr.) John Grondelski My views are exclusively my own.

With the Deepest Love and Gratitude

With the deepest love and gratitude, I want to thank my love Wendy Leonardo, fam-ily, friends, supporters, vol-unteers, donors, opponents and the City of Perth Amboy. Above all, I want to thank God for all his blessings.

To have thousands of voters and their families asking me to represent them and be their voice is truly awe-inspiring. With pride I look forward to continue to inspire our youth and serve this great City of Perth Amboy. Congratulations to all of the successful candidates Joel Pa-bon Sr., William Petrick and Fernando Gonzalez. My best wishes and blessing to the new city council. All the candidates

for city council should hold their heads high; running for office is not easy. For me, it has been a very humbling, ex-citing and difficult experience. I am proud to have been one of you.Let’s all continue to get in-volved and work together for the future of our city. Thank you and God bless you all!

Sincerely,Jelmin Caba

A Whole Lot of History in and Around One Small Circle

Just looking down at City Circle, one can see a whole lot of history. Let’s start with the Historic Elm Tree in front of City Hall. There was a battle to keep that Elm Tree alive. Planted around the 1840’s it has seen a lot of history. In 1863 it witnessed the first flight of the dirigible Aereon by Solomon Andrews in Perth Amboy. That Elm Tree saw the First African-American man to vote under the 15th Amendment. Thomas Mundy Peterson was walking by City Hall when James Lawrence Kearny (son of Lawrence Kearny of the Kearny Cottage) asked Peter-son to come up and vote. We have a replica of the Lib-erty Bell in City Hall Circle. It is mandated by law that the Mayor ring the Liberty Bell at 2 p.m. on July 4th. The Commemorative Arch was constructed in honor of the Bill of Rights Bicentennial on Nov. 20, 1989. The Circle was initially known as Market Square. It was there that market and commerce took place in that circle. There are many historic homes on High Street, re-cently identified by a marker installed by the Historic Pres-ervation Commission. One of the homes is the Governor Larson Home. Morgan T. Lar-

son was Governor of New Jersey from 1929 to 1932. There was a horrible tragedy in the City that took place in 1921. The Eagle Hose and Chemical Company lost nine men (including his two broth-ers: Lawrence and George) in a horrific accident when the firetruck collided with a train going through town. Governor Larson took in 7 children left behind by his those two broth-ers. He made sure that each child got a College Education and was well cared for. Larson was also instrumen-tal in building the Outerbridge Crossing. City Hall itself is where the signing of the Bill of Rights took place. It is the oldest functioning City Hall in the United States in continuous use. It was also a Courthouse and City Jail until 1718. There was a fire in 1731. After anoth-er fire in 1765 it was rebuilt in 1767. In 1789 the Provisional Assembly first ratified the Bill of Rights. It’s on the U.S. National reg-istry of historic places. Next door is the Surveyor General’s Office. Built in 1684 it was a meeting place and re-cord archive. Thanks to all the meetings, New Jersey went from proprietary colony to royal colony to statehood. It’s currently under renovation.K.M. & C.M.

Perth Amboy Caucus/City Coun-cil 11/10 & 11/12/14 Meeting

PERTH AMBOY - R-548-11/14 Authorizing a one (1) year contract with Colgate Paper Stock Co., Inc., New Brunswick, NJ for the market-ing and processing of recy-clables. Department of Public Works Director, Frank Dann gave a detailed explanation of this resolution at the 11/10/14 Cau-cus Meeting. “Colgate Paper Stock Co. was contracted for this one year contract because two of the former recycling plants we used went out of business. The Colgate Plant in New Brunswick was the clos-est in our area. Our recycling has gone up a lot. Colgate Pa-per Stock Co. would rather we bring dry paper to their plant. Colgate will test the moisture in wet paper. If it exceeds their tolerance, we will not get cred-it. We monitor consumer price marketing.” Councilman Kenneth Gonza-lez said “The contract gave Col-gate first preference to rebid af-ter the one year contract ends.” At the 11/12/14 Council Meeting resident Alan Sil-ber recalled that an owner of another recycling company warned the City that commin-gling recyclables would not be good. Colgate Paper Stock Com-pany was awarded the contract for one year. The resolution was moved by Councilman Bill Petrick and seconded by

Councilman Fernando Irizar-ry. R-548 passed. Former Councilman Kenneth Ballut took exception with Resolution 571. R-571 -11/14 - Approving of the Raritan Bay Area YMCA’s Alteration of the Perth Amboy Community Complex gymna-sium exterior to add a plaque in honor of the late Jack Ce-rulo. Balut brought up the fact, “The YMCA still owes almost a million dollars to the City and when will the Y be turned over to the City?” He brought up the name of Tom Zambrowski who worked on the campaign of the Diaz Team. Balut said that the late Ce-rulo and Zambrowski were members of the UEZ. “How can the Y still owe us money when they get all these funds from different organizations who use the facilities? Tell me the last time the UEZ did something about the down-town?” He told the Council, “You grapple over a $10,000 water bill and neglect a million dol-lar bill.” YMCA President and CEO Steve Jobin said, “Cerulo was a great leader and served the community well over the years and deserves this honor.” The Resolution was moved by Irizarry and Seconded by Petrick. R-571 passed.

Election Over But Complaints Continue11/12/14 Council Meeting

PERTH AMBOY - Some resi-dents were still upset about the elections. Resident David Caba had a folder with over 500 ballots that were chal-lenged by the campaign man-ager of Perth Amboy United. Caba lamented the fact, “A lot of votes were trying to be suppressed and most of those votes were minorities. One ticket spent $100,000 and the other $20,000. This was an in-sult to Democrats.” Resident Alan Silber said, “The campaign manager for Perth Amboy United worked for a campaign in Asbury Park and they tried to suppress the votes there, too. Imagine if

you are a first time voter and your vote was thrown out. The County Clerk (E. Flynn) was at their campaign headquarters as well as all the Freeholders. I’m not saying there’s any-thing wrong with that. They wanted to support the Perth Amboy Democrats but didn’t want to count the votes.” Resident Iris Rodriguez warned the candidates that they have to be more vigilant in their campaigns and not have your campaign manager take control. “We need unity. That means all of us, 100%. A lot of the votes that were challenged were Perth Amboy residents.”

City Not Conducive

to Small Businesses

PERTH AMBOY - Business-man Pedro Wilson was con-cerned about the parking pay-ment machines and high water bills. “In Perth Amboy we have no way to win. If the parking machines are not working, it should be noted. Instead the Parking Utility are giving us parking tickets. Who is go-ing to spend all day in court to defend a $30 ticket? People can’t be bothered. They just go and pay it. A business came in from New York to open up a business in Perth Amboy and they were hit with a $10,000 water bill. We’ve had no elec-tions of Chamber of Com-merce Officers and they had to sell their property on Smith Street. Perth Amboy is not friendly to the small business community. I don’t go to any of the events of the Chamber or PAMA. There are almost 2000 foreclosures in Perth Amboy. Half of them are bank owned and the other half are due to owing back taxes.”

Loving Lifting and Liberating a Congregation for 31 Years

Bishop Donald Hilliard, Jr., Celebrates 31st Pastoral Anniver-sary at Cathedral International

News Release 11/13/14 PERTH AMBOY – Love, Lift and Liberate were the three things the new 26 year old pastor did as he took his place as senior pastor at the Second Baptist Church in Perth Am-boy, NJ. “Loving, lifting and liberating was the care this congregation needed as they had just undergone a church split,” said Lead Pastor, Bish-op Donald Hilliard, Jr. That was the scene in 1983, the be-ginning of a pastoral journey that has encompassed more than he and the congregation could have imagined. This month, Bishop Hilliard celebrates 31 years at the helm of Cathedral International, the former Second Baptist Church, with locations in Perth Amboy, Asbury Park and Plainfield. The celebration begins on Fri-day, November 14, 7:30pm at Cathedral International with a night of worship and celebra-tion. On Friday, November 21, anniversary guest speaker is the Rev. Dr. Jamal Bryant of Empowerment Temple, Balti-more, MD. Rev. Dr. DeForest Soaries of First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens, Somerset, NJ has been a close friend to Bishop Hilliard during the en-tire pastoring journey and will be guest speaker on Sunday,

November 23 at the 8:30 a.m. worship service. Both Soar-ies and Hilliard recently com-pleted three month sabbaticals from their churches. Rev. Dr. Jeffery Williams of King’s Ca-thedral, Providence, RI will speak at the 11 a.m. service. One of the many highlights of the 31 year journey occurred in 1995 when Bishop Hilliard was consecrated as Bishop. Today, he serves as the Pre-siding Bishop and Founder of the Covenant Ecumenical Fellowship and Cathedral As-semblies, Inc. In this role, he is the spiritual advisor and men-tor for pastors and churches across the United States and West Africa. Visit the follow-ing websites for a detailed re-port of the many accomplish-ments of the 31 year journey of Bishop Donald Hilliard, Jr.: www.CathedralInternational.org and www.DonaldHilliard-Jr.org. Everyone is invited to the 31st Anniversary services tak-ing place at Cathedral Inter-national, 277 Madison Ave., Perth Amboy, NJ. Photographs to accompany printing or electronic display are available by contacting Carole Dortch-Wright at [email protected].

Inaugural Charity Alumni Game Set for Nov. 26th at 6 p.m.

70 former football Perth Amboy Panthers and Carteret Ramblers to participate in football game as Boys & Girls Club fundraiserNews Release 11/12/14PERTH AMBOY (Novem-ber 12, 2014) – When Rod-ger Balton played Tight End and Safety at Perth Amboy from 1985-1987 Carteret was the team’s biggest rival. On Wednesday, November 26th, Rodger Balton and about 70 players will have an opportunity to meet up again in their first alumni game between the two foot-ball teams. Kickoff for the event will be at Waters Sta-dium and is set for 6 p.m. Players, who will take the field, graduated from one of the two high schools be-tween 1980 and 2010. The alumni game has a greater purpose than recre-ating the rivalry. Players, referees and coordinators will volunteer their efforts to support the Boys & Girls Club of Perth Amboy and Carteret. Funds will benefit numerous BGC programs including Diplomas to De-grees, a college readiness program, which provides a range of services to guide Club members as they work toward high school gradu-ation and prepare for post-secondary education and career success and Project Learn, which reinforces the academic enrichment and school engagement of young people during the time they spend at the Club. Stud-ies show that students do much better in school when they spend their non-school hours engaged in fun, but academically beneficial, ac-tivities. “It’s about two commu-nities coming together and rallying to ensure our youth have the opportunity in be-coming responsible and car-ing citizen,” said Tashilee Vazquez, Chief Professional Officer for the Boys and Girls Club. “Studies show that young people who en-gage in fun, but academical-ly beneficial activities and service afterschool they do much better in school, main-tain positive relationships with adults and avoid risky behaviors.” Perth Amboy Mayor, Wil-da Diaz, is excited for the game and the wager between

the communities, including community service in the winner’s city and a donation to their local food bank. “I have been a supporter of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Perth Amboy since its inception eight years ago and I respect the work that they do with our students. They ensure our kids have a safe place to go, but more importantly this organization provides an environment that sur-rounds them with great lead-ers for brighter future,” said Mayor Diaz. “The BGC programs in Carteret have proven effec-tive in our community. We have teamed up with BGC to serve over 700 Carteret kids and families and look for-ward building our campaign that great futures start in our communities,” said Mayor Dan Rieman of Carteret. About Boys & Girls Clubs of Perth Amboy & Carteret For the Boys & Girls Clubs of Perth Amboy & Carteret, there is one persistent dream – a world where every child is given the opportunity to succeed in life and experi-ence a brighter future. We serve with one purpose – to enable all young people es-pecially those who need us most, to reach their full po-tential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. Estab-lished by the Jewish Renais-sance Foundation, one of New Jersey’s most estab-lished nonprofit corporations (www.jrfnj.org), the Boys & Girls Clubs of Perth Amboy & Carteret is a part of a uni-fied nationwide affiliation of more than 4,000 Clubs who in all 50 states (and Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands) serve over 4 million children and youth every day. We are part of a national move-ment with over 100 years of changing and saving so many young lives. In Perth Amboy and Carteret, over 700 children and youth, ages 6-18, of all races, ethnicities, and income levels are served by our clubs. Novena to St. Rita

O holy protectress of those who art in greatest need, thou who shineth as a star of hope in the midst of dark-ness, blessed Saint Rita, bright mirror of God’s grace, in pa-tience and fortitude thou art a model of all the states in life. I unite my will with the will of God through the merits of my Savior Jesus Christ, and in particular through his pa-tient wearing of the crown of thorns, which with tender devotion thou didst daily con-template. Through the merits of the holy Virgin Mary and thine own graces and virtues, I ask thee to obtain my earnest petition, provided it be for the greater glory of God and my own sanctification. Guide and purify my intention, O holy protectress and advocate, so that I may obtain the pardon of all my sins and the grace to persevere daily, as thou didst in walking with courage, gen-erosity, and fidelity down the path of life. (Mention your re-quest.) Saint Rita, advocate of the im-possible, pray for us. Saint Rita, advocate of the helpless, pray for us. Recite the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be three times each. Dear St. Joseph, head of the most perfect household, foster father of Jesus and guardian of His mother Mary, I confi-dently place myself and all my concerns under your care and protection. I ask that, through your powerful intercession with God, you obtain for me all the help and graces that I need for my spiritual and temporal welfare and in particular, the special favor I now ask there mention or think of your home sale or any other petition, es-pecially family needs. Good St. Joseph, I know with confi-dence, that your prayers on my behalf will be heard by God and that He will grant my re-quest, if it be for His glory and my greater good. Thank you St. Joseph, for having responded to my call. Amen. G.T.A.

May the sacred Heart of Jesus be adored, glori-fied, loved and preserved throughout the world, now and forever. Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us. St. Jude, worker of Miracles, pray for us. St. Jude, helper of the hopeless, pray for us.Say this prayer nine times a day for nine days. It has nev-er been known to fail. Pub-lication must be promised.

Thank you, St. Jude F.M.J.
