1 Introduction This Sales Introduction is an amendment to the “Sales Introduction SP3500 Portable Series” and the “Sales Introduction SAILOR SP3550 UHF”, both available on Cobham SATCOM’s extranet. Reliable radio communications equipment is paramount for people working in the oil & gas and tanker industry. Complicated production procedures make communication vital, hence the enhanced focus on high quality products for this segment. Any Tool pusher on a production platform or rating on a seagoing NLG tanker will enjoy the ease of use and reliability of the SAILOR ATEX radio. This unique portfolio of ATEX products is developed with the maritime user in mind. Traditionally products have been manufactured for the land based segments and then brought into the maritime segment. The SAILOR SP3500 ATEX Portables fits all maritime requirements - e.g. the radios are waterproof.

2 The SAILOR SP3500 ATEX Products The SAILOR ATEX portable series is part of the SAILOR SP3500 Portable family, which features seven models covering all maritime applications. There are three high-quality, durable ATEX models specifically designed for use in the hazardous offshore and tanker environment, whilst at the same time offering superb value:

SAILOR SP3530 Portable VHF ATEX SAILOR SP3540 Portable VHF ATEX GMDSS SAILOR SP3560 Portable UHF ATEX

The three radios are ATEX versions of the SAILOR SP3500 portable radios and offer the same strong features, and in addition the ATEX approval. The SAILOR SP3500 ATEX portables are versions of:

ATEX Version Related Standard Version

SAILOR SP3530 Portable VHF ATEX SAILOR SP3515 Portable VHF with scrambler and CTCSS

SAILOR SP3540 Portable VHF ATEX GMDSS

SAILOR SP3520 Portable VHF GMDSS

SAILOR SP3560 Portable UHF ATEX SAILOR SP3550 Portable UHF

The SAILOR SP3530 Portable VHF ATEX is programmed with the ITU maritime VHF channels, the SAILOR SP3540 Portable VHF ATEX GMDSS with the GMDSS channels, and the SAILOR SP3560 Portable UHF ATEX with the 16 maritime UHF channels. Additional 100 channels can be programmed into each radio.

3 The SAILOR SP3540 Portable ATEX GMDSS The SAILOR SP3540 Portable VHF ATEX GMDSS is the first GMDSS radio ever to also be ATEX approved. With this unique VHF the users can actually use the GMDSS radio on board a tanker. So far the GMDSS radios have not been allowed for use on board vessels that require ATEX equipment, as they may start a fire or explosion.

In an emergency situation the GMDSS radios have not been suitable to be used on board the vessel as they have not been designed for the usage in an area there may be highly flammable or contain explosive gasses. This has not been an optimal situation for the crew in such a stressful situation.

4 Unique Selling Points Most innovative ATEX portfolio the maritime industry has ever seen….. As mentioned above, the radios in these market segments have primarily been designed for land based applications, and some of them are far from optimal for usage in the harsh environment at sea. The SAILOR SP3500 Portable ATEXs are true maritime radios for operation in hazardous environment offering great values and features:

First ATEX portfolio made for the maritime segment

Compact design Durable maritime product, built to last Waterproof (IP67) Ruggedized Solid grip even in wet conditions Large tactile buttons and knobs, a joy to operate even with large gloves Excellent and powerful sound quality Easy to carry No large antenna No carry bag required in order to be compliant with the ATEX directive Large easy to read display with red backlight for protection of night vision

Smart stylish design World renowned SAILOR reliability you can count on First VHF GMDSS ATEX radio in the market

The SAILOR SP3500 Portable ATEX radios offer the same strong features as the non-ATEX versions:

6 What does ATEX mean? “Equipment and Protective systems intended for use in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres (ATEX) Directive 94/9/EC is a so-called “New Approach” directive which provides the technical requirements to be applied to equipment intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. The Directives is named after the French “Atmosphere EXplosible” and it has been mandatory from 1st July 2003. Manufacturers who apply its provisions and affix the CE marking are able to sell their equipment anywhere in Europe without any further requirements being applied with respect to the risks covered being applied. In effect this means access to the largest single market in the world, including over 450 million citizens. The Directive covers a surprisingly large range of equipment, potentially including equipment used on fixed offshore platforms, in petrochemical plants, mines, flour mills and other areas where a potentially explosive atmosphere may be present. The European market for such equipment is estimated at 3 Billion Euros per year. In very broad terms, there are three pre-conditions for the Directive to apply: the equipment: Must have its own source of ignition; Be intended for use in a potentially explosive atmosphere (air mixtures); and Be under normal atmospheric conditions. The Directive also covers components essential for the safe use and safety devices directly contributing to the safe use of equipment in scope. These latter devices may be outside the potentially explosive environment. These pages aim at providing information for both experts and non-experts. See the Relevant information on the implementation and application of the Directive. “ Source: © European Communities, 1995-2008

7 What does it mean in practical terms? The ATEX portfolio is designed to avoid mix of ATEX and non-ATEX equipment. For example it is not possible to use a non-ATEX battery on an ATEX radio. Also, the radios are clearly marked and have different colours to avoid any mistake. It is very important to emphasize this to anyone working with ATEX products. A dangerous situation could occur if non-ATEX equipment is brought into an area with a potential explosive atmosphere.

8 ATEX versus Factory Mutual etc. There are a lot of terms within this area of product for usage in areas which may contain explosive gasses etc. The ATEX standard is the latest and newest European standard. Another term previously used in Europe is Genelec, which was the term for the approvals in the past. Another common term used to describe these kinds of products is Intrinsical Safety, or just IS. The important thing to know is that to use these kinds of radios in Europe in areas that require this kind of products; then the products have to be ATEX approved. Many countries outside Europe do accept and acknowledge the ATEX approval. In the USA there are other approvals. The most used term is Factory Mutural, or just FM approval. The SAILOR SP3500 Portable ATEX has not been approved to this standard as of now. Cobham SATCOM may decide to obtain this approval as well.
