Veronika Burian, born in Prague, got her first degree in Industrial Design in Munich, Germany, before moving to Austria and Italy to work as a mix between product and graphic designer. She graduated with distinction from the MA in Typeface Design in Reading, UK, in 2003 and she started to work as full-time type designer at Dal-tonMaag in London for a few years. She moved back to her hometown Prague and is now living and working in Spain. She dedicates her time to Type Together, an independent type-label that she co-founded with José Scaglione.

José Scaglione works as both a graphic and typeface designer and is a co-founder of type foundry Type Together, where he has published many award-winning type families. “Barely called in to a legitimate save, the Polish goalkeeper dealt effectively with the few crosses Villa did manage to throw into the box. Early on, he came out and made an authoritative claim against Chris-tian Benteke. It laid down a marker that showed he would not be intimidated by the big Belgian.”

“There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral book. Books are well written, or badly written. That is all.”

As Adelle is displayed in a larger size, it displays the typeface’s unique quirks. Adelle surprises by sharply cutting and accenting its edges at different angles (seen below.) These rather sharp changes, as surprising as they may at first appear, make the typeface ultimately all the more visually enticing and fascinating.

Adelle's italic form has some

significant changes from its

regular form. For example

its lowercase a and g letters

lose their double stories and

change to a larger counter.

It's capital Q, meanwhile,

changes its tail.

One of the common uses of Adelle in print and digital media has been in editorials, like the fake one provided for your pleasure.

TYPE

IN USEhow adelle is used in “the real world.”I may be a cranky old man writing to myself, and many critics may call me out of touch, but I believe my editorials on typefaces that are used in editorials are important as they call attention to typefaces that participate in one of the most important and underrepresented roles in our modern day society – that of someone complaining or voicing their opinion behind a keyboard.

It has come to my attention the typeface Adelle has been showing up a lot more lately, and has started to show up in a lot more editorials. To be perfectly frank, despite my generational disconnection with this relatively new typeface, I am intrigued to see how Adelle plays out. Adelle broke into the typography world in 2011 and has been gradually found in more and more things. The story of Adelle and its rise to glory isn’t a new story by any stretch of the imagination,

but I must acknowledge that despite this Adelle’s story is a heartworming one that is sure to inspire many aspiring typefaces that dream of making it big.

I may be criticized for being an old softie, but I miss the days when typography didn’t feel as elite and digital as it was now, and seeing a typeface like Adelle that doesn’t entirely fit to modern day typography’s perfect, sharp serif or san serif beauty standards is a welcome change of pace. Adelle has many strange yet beautiful imperfections that never feel too awkward or purposefully loud. Pleasing to the eye and successfully fitting into the editorial scene, this writer looks forward to using Adelle for the foreseeable future.
