Adinkra History & Printing Workshop  Learn  the  ancient  art  of  Adinkra  printing  for  1  Day,  with  David  Boamah  

Adinkra  Art  is  one  of  Ghana's  vibrant  and  ancient  art  forms  developed  by  the  Akan  people.  It  involves  printing  Adinkra  visual  symbols  on  cloths  by  using  the  Aduro  pigment  made  from  Bark  and  stamping  the  symbols  using  carved  Calabash  and  wooden  

combs.  The  symbols  themselves  communicate  messages  that  give  wisdom,  aspects  of  life  and  it's  environment  to  the  people.  David  will  be  explaining  the  symbols  to  participants  for  their  deeper  understanding  and  appreciation.

Date:     Monday,  25  July  2016  Time:     9am  –  4pm  Venue:     Cross  Cultural  Collaborative  Studio:  Aba  House,  20  Beach  Crescent,  Nungua  Parking:  There  is  some  parking  available.    Fee:     90  GHC  per  person.  (Includes  a  talk  on  Adinkra  history  &  symbolism  and  all  materials.  You  get  to  take  your  creations  home).    Bring:     Bring  a  bottle  of  water  as  it  will  get  hot  and  your  lunch.  Otherwise  there  are  local  safe  eateries  along  the  road  or  Coco  Beach  Resort  

down  the  road.  

 

 

THE  WORKSHOP:  David  will  be  covering:  

• History   of   Adinkra   symbols,   how   the   stamps  and  Aduro  natural  dye  is  made  

• The  planning  of  your  own  design  layouts  • The  skill  of  using  the  wooden  comb  freehand.  

You  will  be  given  1  yard  piece  of  cloth  for  your  to  design  your   own   Adinkra   piece   and   take   home   after   the  workshop.

ABOUT  DAVID  BOAMAH:  David   has   been   lecturing   and   running   extensive   workshops   at  Ntonso's   Adinkra   Village   to   visitors   and   various   interested   adult  and  children  groups.  He  has  a  passion  for  maintaining  and  teaching  the   culture   behind   Adinkra   and   with   his   extensive   historical  knowledge  and  skill,  you  will  receive  a  high  quality  appreciation  for  this  art  at  the  end  of  the  workshop.  

 

 

 

THE  VENUE  &  FACILITIES:  Aba   House   is   an   established   artist  residential   studio   based   in   the   fishing  village  of  Nungua,  across   the  road   from  the   beach.   It   is   the   home   of   Cross  Cultural   Collaborative,   which   has   been  running   for   20   years   creating   artistic  collaborations   with   international   artists  together  with   local  artisans  and  helping  the   local   children   providing   education  with   numeracy   and   literacy   in   creative  ways.   There   are   bathroom   facilities  available.
