President’s Corner
Now that the Summer season is over,
it’s time to reflect and start thinking
about next season. It has been a
huge season, with record
registrations, huge numbers at our
competitions, joint relay competition
with Queensland Athletics and
finishing up with a huge IGA State
Championships last weekend.
Our AGM was held this month, and I
congratulate Ros McAlister, Rob
Gardner and Daryl Dickson on their
re-election to the Board of LAQ. Also
huge congratulations to Eddie
Fabian and Anne Bell who were
made Life Members of Little Athletics
Queensland. Both Anne and Eddie
have served Little Athletics as
officials and office bearers for many
years and the award is richly
deserved for both of them.
One issue I have with the AGM is the
number of Centres who send in their
votes. It is the right of every Centre in
Queensland to elect your Board, and
vote on the nominations for Life
Memberships. In all, we only had 54
votes returned, which means that
only around 27 out of 106 Centres
voted at the AGM. I urge all Centres
to exercise their rights as a member
of our organisation, and vote at the
next AGM.
Congratulations to everyone that
was involved in the organisation of
last weekend’s IGA State
Championships. If having over 1,900
athletes to organise over the
weekend was not enough, we also
had the Queensland Athletics Track
Classic on the Saturday Night. This
meant we had to finish on time on
Saturday to allow enough time for
the change over. Although this was
not easy to achieve, it was well
worth it, with many of our families
staying back to watch our Olympic
athletes competing, and meeting
many of the athletes as well.
The feature event was our 100m and
400m finals held during the Classic,
with our athletes having a unique
opportunity to not only watch, but
compete with the senior athletes.
On behalf of the Board I thank all the
officials who helped out over the
weekend, many of whom also
officiated at the Track Classic. It was
a very long and arduous weekend,
but there were no complaints,
everyone was there for our athletes.
Also I have to thank the Board
members involved, and the Office
Staff for all the hard yards put in over
the past 6 months to make it
happen.
In closing, I congratulate the 26
athletes who will be going to
Canberra next month to compete in
the Asics Australian Little Athletics
Championships. I look forward to
watching you all compete, and
doing your best for Queensland.

It is worth noting the competition is
also open to athletes from Summer
Centres so Centres looking for a
social or developmental opportunity
in the off season should consider
sending a team. I’m sure they will
have a great time in Townsville for
the Championships.
LAQ will also be running its Winter
Coaching Camp after the
Championships in the second week
of the school holidays so both the
Winter and Summer athletes will be
able to receive high level coaching
by LAQ’s coaches after the event.
Further information will be forwarded
on both the camp and the Winter
Championships so stay tuned.
Competition and Officials
Committees Expressions of Interest
The LAQ Board is now calling for
expressions of interest to join either
the Competition or Officials
Committee. This is a great
opportunity to have your say in the
running of the Association and to
contribute directly to the services
that are offered to the athletes.
The forms are included in this mailout
and are due back Monday the 6th of
May.
New LAQ Website Address
Little Athletics Queensland has
launched a new website address
which better reflects our new name
and branding. The new address is
www.laq.org.au
The LAQ staff email addresses will
also end with laq.org.au although
the old addresses will still work in
case it takes some time for people to
change over to the new addresses.
We’ve also made a number of
changes to the content and layout
of the website so please visit the site
soon to make yourself familiar with
the new layout.

Graduation Certificates & 10 Year
Athlete Participation Badges
Graduation certificates are available
to all Centres on request. Order

of the athletes in writing to the LAQ
Office. Please allow at least 1 week
for preparation of these certificates.
Honour Certificates & Year of Service
Badges
A great way to recognise the
hardworking volunteers at your
Centre is to nominate them for an
honour certificate or years of service
badge.
The Association offers these awards
for all Centres. To be eligible for an
honour certificate, members must
have been involved with your Centre
for a minimum of 5 years. There are a
number of years of service badges
available, including 10, 15, 20, 25
and 30 years. These certificates and

Healthy Centre Tip
Funding is vital to all organisations,
particularly sporting clubs. You may
not know, but funding is available
through grants at all levels of
government throughout the State.
This includes local Councils as well as
both State and Federal
governments.
Grants open and close at different
times throughout the year, so it’s
important to keep up to date with
when they open, and also when
they close so your Centre does not
miss out on the opportunity to apply
for funding.
Remember the old saying ‘you’ve
got to be in it to win it’? It’s true,
because if you don’t apply, you’re
not in with a chance!
The Australian Government
Volunteers Grant 2013 is now open
and is aimed to assist volunteers and
encourage volunteering. They
provide funding between $1,000 and
$5,000 to:
• Purchase portable, tangible,
small equipment items to help
their volunteers
• Contribute to the
reimbursement of fuel costs for
their volunteers who use their
own car to transport others to
activities, deliver food, assist
with medical appointments or
help people in need
• Contribute to the
reimbursement of transport
costs incurred by volunteers
with disability, who are unable
to drive
• Contribute to the costs of
training courses and/or
undertake background
screening checks for their
volunteers.
The Queensland Government
Community Benefit Fund Unit
administers the following funding
programs:
• Gambling Community Benefit
Fund
• Jupiters Casino Community
Benefit Fund
• Reef Hotel Casino Community
Benefit Fund and
• Breakwater Island Casino
Community Benefit Fund
These funds provide one-off grants of
$5,000 up to $150,000 for community
groups for various tasks and projects.
The new funding rounds for the
Gambling Community Benefit Fund,
Jupiters Casino Community Benefit
Fund and Breakwater Island Casino
Community Benefit Fund will open on
4 April 2013 and close 31 May 2013.
This is a great opportunity to get your
Centre Committee together to
discuss what you can apply for.
For more information on these grants,
please visit the website
http://www.olgr.qld.gov.au/grants/C
BFU/index.shtml
The Queensland Government’s Get
in the Game initiative supports sport
and recreation at the grassroots
level.
Get in the Game comprises three
funding programs worth $18 million
over the next three years.
Get Started, Get Going and Get
Playing are designed to get more
people, especially children and
young people, playing sport and
involved in recreation activities.
While the first round of funding for all
of the Get in the Game grants have
closed, another round will be
opening shortly. Please visit this
website for further details
http://www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/funding
/getinthegame/index.html
There were a number of LAQ Centres
who were successful in the first round
of Get Going and Get Playing
funding. Congratulations to these
Centres, they include:
• University of the Sunshine Coast
- $100,000
• Algester - $7,016
• Douglas Shire - $6,683
• Forest Lake - $10,000
• Mt Gravatt - $5,076
• Mulgrave - $9,940
• Redlands - $9,760
• Rosewood - $1,268
• Toowong Harriers - $2,600
The process was very simple and the
successful applications will hopefully
encourage other Centres to pursue
this opportunity in the next round.
The Secretary from Algester LAC had
this to say about the Grant
application:
Algester LAC was recently the proud
recipients of Get Going funding
through the QLD Government
Grants. We were lucky enough to be
chosen and will now purchase a full
set of 60 new collapsible hurdles with
trolleys. Our existing hurdles are not
4
all collapsible hurdles as
recommended by Little Athletics
Australia, so we thought the grant
may help us to correct this and
update our existing ones which were
getting a little old. We submitted the
grant application, which was
relatively simple but did require a
little planning and ensuring we got
the wording "just right". We look
forward to arranging delivery and
using these from the start of next
season, our 30th anniversary year.
These are only a few of the many
funding opportunities available for
your Centre. We encourage all
Centres to have a go, and put their
applications in for funding. You just
never know!
Remember, if your Centre has a tip
they wish to share, please contact
Shannon in the LAQ Office.

Rockhampton, Gold Coast, Aspley
and Deception Bay Centres for their
hospitality in hosting the above
Clinics.
We would also like to thank Ian
Thompson, Michael Hooper, Stuart
Dempster, Les Gearey, Josh

Little Athletics Program for Schools
(LAPS) - School Visits
With the start of a new season
approaching the Association is
currently planning School Visits for
Winter Centres. The School Visits offer
a great promotion for your Centre.
If Centres have any schools in their
area that you would like LAQ to visit,
or if any coaches are interested in
conducting LAPS visits on behalf of
LAQ, please contact Daniel in the
LAQ Office.
Introduction To Coaching Courses
This month has seen one course
conducted in Gayndah with 12
people attending. Again, weather
has interrupted the delivery of
scheduled courses with a number of
them having to be postponed to a
later date. Details of where and
when these courses will be run are
on the LAQ website.
If any Centre would like to host an
ITC, please do not hesitate to
contact Shaun Lethem on 0417 613
911 or [email protected] for
more information.
Winter Coaching Camp
The 2013 Winter Coaching Camp will
be held at the Townsville Sports
Reserve on Monday 1st & Tuesday 2nd
of July 2013, directly following the
IGA Winter Championships.
Winter Centres will be receiving
information and nomination forms in
the mail in the coming weeks. We
encourage all Winter Centres to
promote the camp to your athletes.
We have had a great turnout to our
Winter Coaching Camps for the past
two seasons and are hoping for the
same in 2013.
Summer Centre athletes are also
welcome to attend the camp.
Introduction to Coaching Course
We are seeking expressions of
interest from Winter Centres who are
interested in hosting an ITC Course
this season.
The aim of the ITC courses is to
provide parents, teachers and
interested sports people who have
little or no experience of the sport of
track and field with coaching
information and activities.
Introduction to Coaching courses
are designed for beginner coaches
to give a sound basic knowledge
and are particularly appropriate for
people coaching young athletes at
the grass roots level.
The cost is still $44 per participant
thanks to Medibank and their
continued support of the coaching
program
Costs of the course include an
ATFCA coaching manual,
attendance certificate, literature
and morning /afternoon tea.
The course is eight hours in duration
and covers all event groups on the
Little Athletics track and field
program. At the conclusion of the
course the coach will be able to:
5
• implement a coaching session
appropriate to the target
group,
• organise a group of young
athletes safely,
• implement a working model of
each event through the use of
drills, technical skills and games,
• rectify some of the more
common technical faults
associated with Little Athletes
For further information, please
contact Shaun Lethem on 0417 613
911 or [email protected]
Lions Mountain View Challenge
The Lions Club of Maleny is
conducting the Lions Mountain View
Challenge on Sunday 28th July 2013.
The main focus of the event is on
fundraising for the Lions Medical
Research Foundation, which
supports medical research at
Brisbane Hospitals.
There will be a Half Marathon of
21km, an 8km run and walk plus a
3km run which is for kids under 15
years.
The route for all runs and walks will
follow designated pathways with
marshals stationed along the route.
Water points will be placed along
the longer routes with hydration fluids
available at the end of the event.
There will also be a free sausage
sizzle after the event for all
participants and parents.
The event will start and finish at the
Maleny Showgrounds, where there is
ample parking and is very near the
main shopping centre for cafes.

2013 IGA State Championships
IGA State Championships were held
last weekend and had over 1,980
nominations, which is the largest we
have had for some time. The
weather was hot but there were a
record number of Personal Best
Performances and 38 Queensland
Best Performances (QBP’s) recorded.
The QBP’s will be presented for
ratification at the April Board of
Directors meeting. Congratulations
to all athletes, we trust that you all
enjoyed the weekend.
The Queensland Track Classic was
held on the Saturday night of the
Championships and was a great
experience that many families and
athletes chose to stay and watch.
Sally Pearson was also on hand to
meet and to sign autographs for our
athletes. We also had LAQ U13 – U17
athletes competing in their 100m
and 400m finals during the Track
Classic.
For the first time in history, we also
had a Wheelchair AWD athlete
compete with our other LAQ
athletes. Paralympian athlete Rheed
McCracken from West Bundaberg
LAC competed in the U17 400m and
800m as an exhibition athlete and
provided the crowd with lots of
excitement. Many athletes were
delighted to meet Rheed after his
races and get his autograph. His
performance was very much
appreciated by the LAQ
membership as evident by the
rapturous applause that rose from
the spectators as he crossed the
finish line of each event.
Any successful competition that LAQ
hosts is due to the Officials that
dedicate their time and effort on the
arena. Congratulations and thank
you to all that assisted in the many
roles required to run these
Championships. Your willingness to
assist where needed was inspiring
and it was also wonderful to see
many new faces on the arena. Your
dedication and determination to
keep the events running to the
timetable on Saturday allowed for a
smooth transition for the Track
Classic. So thank you!
This is part of an email sent to the
LAQ Office on Monday, that we felt
was worth sharing:
It has probably been remiss of us in
previous years to not thank you all
for the HUGE effort you all put in to
ensure the State carnivals run like
clockwork. Each year, we have
learnt more and more, and have
seen only SOME of what goes on
behind the scenes, and it is an
absolutely amazing process. From
my perspective, being involved in
another sporting association now, I
can assure you that the processes
LAQ have in place, the personnel,
the process to deal with disputes,
and the ability to adapt, is
fantastic, and something you
should all be very proud of!! (I am
probably only realising it now!!)
Again, thank you and our little
athletes, although some of them
not so little, had a great time, and
particularly the new ones this year,
had an amazing experience as did
their parents. The Track Classic was
an awesome addition. Thank you
to the officials on each event, who
also do an amazing job and
always make you feel welcome
and are only too happy to teach
you when you are learning
something new - as in timekeeping
yesterday for me!!
Images with Attitude had
photographers that were busy on
the grounds during the whole
weekend’s competition. Photos can
still be ordered by contacting
Belinda or one of her team on (07)
3800 8010.
Competing Centres will find
enclosed with this mail a complete
list of the result and a Performance
Certificate for each athlete who
participated. A complete list of
results can also be found on the LAQ
website.

Centre Carnivals & Pentathlons
LAQ Centres that are planning to
conduct a Centre Carnival or
Pentathlon, which will be open to

providing event details to the LAQ
Office for endorsement and
promotional purposes. Part of the
endorsement process is to complete
and return the attached Centre
Carnival Sanctioning Form along
with a nomination form, sample
program and relevant promotional
papers.
For an event to be endorsed by LAQ,
the Carnival and / or component of
the Carnival offered to U6 – U17

are a few financial incentives to help
get Centres representatives there.

subsidise all Centres attending
Conference on the basis of distance
of the Centre from the conference
