Our pupils are drawn from a broad ability range, and our selection process is designed to identify pupils who are able to benefit from our stimulating and diverse curriculum. All pupils at King’s are expected to make a positive contribution to the life of the School.

ENTRY INTO KING’S SENIOR SCHOOL (AGES 11–18) Continued OVERVIEW OF SCHOLARSHIPS

Entrance into Year 8 and Year 10Candidates for entry into Year 8 and Year 10 of the Senior School are required to sit our Entrance examination consisting of the following papers:

• Mathematics• English• Aptitude

All candidates will have a Taster Day with the year group they wish to join and an interview with a senior member of staff. A report will also be requested from the candidate’s current school.

Entrance at 16+ into Year 12Entry is based on interviews with the Headmaster and Head of Sixth Form and is dependent on GCSE results. Pupils must gain a ‘B’ grade (equivalent to a grade 6 in the new GCSE marking system) or higher in the subjects they wish to study at A level. Exceptions to this are at the Headmaster’s discretion.

Learning SupportWe provide Learning Support, from our dedicated Learning Support Department, to enable those pupils with specific learning difficulties to successfully access our academic curriculum. We welcome pupils with physical disabilities, provided that they are able to access all areas of the School site and our curriculum.

We advise parents of children with special educational needs/learning difficulties or physical disabilities to discuss their child’s requirements with the School before he or she sits our Entrance examination or Academic Scholarship examination so that we can make adequate provision for him/her. Parents should provide a copy of an Educational Psychologist’s report or a medical report to support their request, for example for extra time or other special arrangements.

Scholarships are offered each year to candidates who are able to demonstrate exceptional talent in their chosen field(s). Scholarships are offered for academic excellence, sporting prowess, musical, dramatic and artistic ability, as well as for all-round ability.

The aim of these Scholarships is to recognise and reward talent, and encourage Scholarship holders’ abilities. We offer Scholarships at 9+ (entry into Year 5), 11+ (entry into Year 7), 13+ (entry into Year 9) and 16+ (entry into Year 12).

The Scholarships available at King’s are summarised in the table below.

All Scholarships are won in open competition and are awarded solely on merit. Scholarship holders are expected to enhance the King’s community, become role models for their peers and enrich life at the School.

Scholarships can bring a fee remission of between 10% and 50% of the School fees, but please note Scholarships higher than 25% are only given in exceptional cases. A Choristership offers a 75% remission of the School fees, reducing to a 60% remission when a Chorister leaves the Cathedral Choir.

The number of Scholarships awarded in each category is dependent on the calibre of the candidates. The Headmaster’s decision is always final.

Scholarships are held for the duration of a pupil’s time in either the Junior or Senior School, provided his or her conduct is satisfactory and his or her level of work and commitment is in line with the expectations of a Scholar.

Scholarships given at 9+ will be reviewed in Year 6 for entry into Senior School. Scholarships given at 11+ and 13+ will be reviewed at Year 11 for entry into Sixth Form by means of an interview with the pupil.

In most cases, Scholarships are maintained or, if appropriate, increased in value for the Sixth Form.

Please note that Art Scholarships given at 11+ are reviewed at the end of Year 9 in light of the pupil’s GCSE choices.

KING’S GLOUCESTER KING’S GLOUCESTER7 8

We are proud to name this Scholarship in honour of Francis Gillespy who was the Headmaster of King’s from 1922 to 1930. Gillespy was responsible for a considerable amount of progress at the School during this time, including the acquisition of our sports ground at Archdeacon Meadow and the construction of many new buildings on our campus. As Headmaster he placed high importance on a well-rounded education, and encouraged pupils to be involved in all aspects of School life.

A Gillespy Scholarship may be awarded to boys and girls entering the Senior School who we believe will make a significant contribution to School life, both inside and outside of the classroom.

Pupils who receive this Scholarship will demonstrate good character, ability and potential. Gillespy Scholarship holders should display personal qualities such as enthusiasm, initiative, imagination and dedication as well as being able to demonstrate an ability to inspire and motivate others.

Holders of this Scholarship are expected to take part whole-heartedly in School life.

As we get to know children during the admissions process, the Headmaster will identify candidates that he thinks may benefit from receiving the Gillespy Scholarship. We do not invite applications for this Scholarship; the decision to award a Gillespy Scholarship is that of the Headmaster; he may choose to award more than one each year.

King’s has enjoyed a long history with Gloucester Cathedral and the Abbey that preceded it. For the last nine hundred years, we have been linked with the Choristers of the Cathedral, a relationship that is still strong today, as King’s continues to provide and to educate the boy Choristers of the Cathedral Choir.

Boys who enter the School as a Chorister play a central role in day-to-day life within the Cathedral, and feel privileged to sing in a beautiful and historic setting. Choristers have the opportunity to gain in confidence, as well as acquiring a musical knowledge and understanding of which many adults would be proud.

With a Choristership comes a reduction of the School fees by 75%. When the boys’ voices change and they leave the Cathedral Choir, the Choristership continues at 60% to enable the boys to continue their schooling at King’s right through to 18 years.

What is expected of a Cathedral Chorister at King’s?• A genuine passion for Music • Chorister duties take priority over other School and social activities • When a Chorister leaves the Cathedral Choir they are expected to be involved in choral singing within the School

Assessment for a ChoristershipVoice trials are held annually in March, but prospective candidates may ask to be heard at any time of the year, when special arrangements are made between King’s and the Cathedral’s Director of Music.

The Cathedral’s Director of Music conducts all Voice Trials; no special coaching or voice training is required or expected of candidates.

A prospective Chorister is asked to bring along a song that he enjoys singing; this can be a hymn, a carol, a nursery rhyme or even a pop song. Tests will also include those to measure the quality of the voice, the accuracy of the ear and the ability to pitch a note. Reading aloud is part of the assessment, as all Choristers must be able to read aloud with reasonable confidence.

Candidates for Choristerships will be required to meet the entry criteria for the Junior School and will be asked to complete a Taster Day before a place is offered.

BURSARIES

Our bursary programme is available for entry into Senior School.

A bursary is a form of financial assistance which is means tested. Bursaries are not dependent on merit but are awarded to pupils who are likely to gain most from a King’s education and who will contribute fully to the life of the School. Scholarships may be supplemented by bursary assistance if the financial circumstances of the individual family necessitate it.

All applicants are required to disclose, in confidence, their financial details on our Bursary Application Form, for submission to the Bursar, before a decision can be reached. Both parents are required to provide proof of their income and assets. The level of support varies according to parental need. However, parents need to be aware that the bursary fund is limited. Bursaries are always offered for 12 months at a time. The family is required to provide up-to-date information for every year that their child attends the School. Levels of support may vary with fluctuations in income.

If you feel you might be eligible for bursary assistance, please refer to the bursary policy on the website, contact the Bursar to discuss this further, or select the relevant box on the Registration Form and a Bursary Application Form (together with a copy of our bursary policy) will be sent to you automatically at the relevant time.

Please note that, whilst we would like as many as possible of those pupils who meet our entry requirements to take up a place, the bursary fund is limited.
