What Lightroom Is NotLightroom is not Photoshop

• Graphic artists, medical illustrators, web designers, photographers and more all use Photoshop

• Not specifically organized for photo editing workflow

• Photoshop has better pixel editing capabilities - use PS when extensive local adjustments are necessary (photo retouching)

• Use Photoshop for montages, filter effects, manipulated images, adding text effects, etc.

• LR and PS are full integrated• Start in LR and jump to PS as required

How Lightroom Works

Basic Concepts

The few essential principles every Lightroom beginner needs to master

How Lightroom Works

The Catalog

Concept: The CatalogYour actual photos are not stored in LR.

Lightroom only contains information about your photos in a database file called the catalog.

• What the catalog contains:• Links to where the photos are on your hard drive

• Previews (large and small) of your photos

• Any develop changes (enhancements) you’ve made.

• Metadata from the camera & metadata that you’ve added

• Keywords, labels and ratings

Because it’s a database, you don’t hit ‘Save’ every few minutes. All changes are recorded as you go along.

Concept: The Catalog

Lightroom Catalog• Contains preview images of all photos

• Contains information (metadata, ratings, etc.) about your images

• The actual images are stored on hard drives, CDs or DVDs

The Sears Catalog• Contains graphics of its products

• Contains written information about products

• The actual products are in a store or a warehouse

This is Very ImportantOnce you’ve started using Lightroom:In order for the catalog to remain accurate …

1. ALWAYS move, copy, rename or delete photos using Lightroom

LR will not be aware of any changes made in Explorer or Finder.Delete or move a photo outside LR, it will still appear in the catalog

(If someone puts a book on the wrong shelf in a library,

the card catalog will not help you find it.)

2. ALWAYS start out in Lightroom if you plan to edit a photo in some other software (Photoshop, Elements, Painter, etc.)

The catalog will then automatically update and register the changes you’ve made elsewhere

How Lightroom Works

Non-Destructive Editing

Concept: Non-Destructive Editing

Adjustments are not applied to the original image. They are saved separately in the catalog as a recipe or ‘set of instructions’.

A copy of the edited image is created when you output your photo

(print, web, e-mail).

A preview of your image is created on the screen and in the catalog

This is HUGE

Think of your original images as negatives stored safely in a vault.

Changing History

“The Recipe”• Every enhancement you make to a photo is permanently stored in the catalog as a sequential list called the history.

• This means at any time in the future you can revisit any stage of development in a photo and alter it if you so choose.

• You can even go back to the original and start over…

General Lightroom Workflow• You ‘import’ your photos into the LR catalog

• Your catalog starts out empty• If photos already on your hard drive: ADD to catalog• New photos from camera: COPY to hard drive and catalog

• You organize your photos in the Library Module• Add descriptive terms (keywords) so you can find them later• Choose your favorites (flag or rate)• Sort them into groups (collections)• Delete any rejects

• You adjust and retouch in the Develop Module• Crop and straighten• Make tonal and color adjustments• Sharpen, remove noise, do lens correction• Add effects (B&W, split toning)

• You export copies of your favorites to eagerly awaiting outside world using Export or one of the output modules (Slideshow, Print or Web)

The Take AwayLIGHTROOM NEVER ALTERS YOUR ORIGINAL IMAGE FILE• Any or all adjustments made to an image can be undone at any time because they are stored in the catalog database. • You can have more than one version of a photo or ‘recipe’ called virtual copies

• ALWAYS USE LIGHTROOM AS YOUR MAIN PHOTO SOFTWARE• Move, rename, delete photos ONLY from within Lightroom• Only access other photo editing software from within Lightroom

•Photoshop, Elements, Painter, Various Plug-ins, etc.

NON DESTRUCTIVE EDITING IS YOUR BEST FRIENDBe creative without any fear of ruining your picture
