To Spend or Not to Spend…. For a lot of us, we spent or are spending the majority of our working years tucking money away for retirement. What we don’t necessarily think about, is that there is a possibility that we may need to spend our money on services such as homecare, chore services, home repairs/modifications to accommodate an unforeseen disability, assisted living, etc. It is amazing though how even one small service such as cleaning assistance or Meals on Wheels, can make all the difference in someone’s life and not take a huge toll on the pocket book. It is also important to remember that being proactive and putting the “little” things in place may help divert a bigger problem from occurring. For example, maybe you could use the help shoveling your sidewalks because you aren’t as steady on your feet as you once were. Paying someone to help you with this task could save you from taking a fall or injuring yourself, which would then require an array of more expensive services and medical bills. Options Counselors at the Aging & Disability Resource Center are available to assist you with weighing your options and possible costs associated with various services to help you decide how to spend your well-earned dollars. With the State of Wisconsin’s Medicaid dollars being lim-ited, there are benefits for everyone to try and make their own dollars last as long as possible. It is very reassuring to know if you do need financial assistance in obtaining the services you need that there are programs available to help. So to answer the question, “to spend or not to spend”...spend wisely and don’t be afraid to pay for the help you need. Being a consumer of healthcare related services is the same as being a consumer of anything else. Healthcare related services come at a wide array of costs. Rates de-pend on so many different factors, that it is very important to “shop around” and be extremely honest with providers as to what help you are looking for. The Aging & Disability Resource Center can support you through making those choices when the time comes; we’re just a phone call away! Approximate costs for various services:

The type of Assisted Living Facility is based on how the facility is licensed: ♦   Residen al Care Apartment Complex (RCAC): Residence for adults that consist of independent      

apartments. Each apartment has own lockable entrance, kitchen with stove, private bathroom,     sleeping and living areas. Can provide an individual with up to 28 hours of assistance per week.   

♦   Community Based Residen al Facili es (CBRF): Residence for 5 or more adults. CBRFs may provide   either private or semi‐private rooms that do not have a kitchen. They may or may not have a private bathroom in each room. CBRFs are able to provide a more significant amount of care.  

♦    Adult Family Home (AFH): Residence for 1 or 4 adults. Able to provide similar services to a CBRF but cannot exceed 4 residents.
