JOBIM to the artistic innovations of the inimitable jazz virtuoso PAT METHENY and young, prize-winning jazz vocal phenomenons, this season’s concerts highlight the greatest moments in the history of jazz as well as explore how this dynamic art form is evolving today. JAZZ ROOTS 2013-2014 series subscriptions, which include tickets to all six performances, are on sale to the public beginning April 29 with seating priority given to renewed subscriptions. Subscriptions range in price from $160-$790* and can be purchased through the Adrienne Arsht Center box office, 1300 Biscayne Blvd., by calling (305) 949-6722, or online at arshtcenter.org. Single tickets, if available after the subscription campaign ends, start at $25. “More than 50,000 South Florida jazz fans, including 5,000 Miami-Dade students, have filled the Knight Concert Hall over the past five years to experience the myriad styles of jazz -- from swing and bebop to funk and Latin jazz, and beyond,” said John Richard, president and CEO of the Adrienne Arsht Center. “This year’s JAZZ ROOTS season once again features an all-star roster of jazz icons: Neville, Jobim, Marsalis, Metheny, Botti and two Miami natives - Cécile McLorin Salvant and Nicole Henry, further demonstrating the Center’s commitment to showcasing the work of local talent,” Richard added. “From inception, the JAZZ ROOTS series focused on presenting concerts and education programs based on the rhythms of West Africa and thereby defining the music of the Americas. This season, we are presenting world-class, award-winning artists and musical styles from Brazil, New Orleans, and all points across America,” said producer Larry Rosen. “Equally important to our mission is to create opportunities for Miami based artists and Miami based music organizations. The concert lineup for the JAZZ ROOTS 2013-2014 six-concert season in the John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall is as follows: Adrienne Arsht Center, the University of Miami Frost School of Music, and Festival Miami present JAZZ ROOTS – A Larry Rosen Jazz Series: PINK PANTHER AT 50 - CELEBRATING HENRY MANCINI Tom Scott, Monica Mancini, Jon Secada, Shelly Berg, Nicole Henry, Cyrille Aimée, and The University of Miami Frost School of Music’s Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra November 1, 2013 at 8 p.m. John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall The 2013-2014 Sixth Anniversary JAZZ ROOTS season kicks off with a spectacular concert celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the iconic film, The Pink Panther, and its composer - the musical genius HENRY MANCINI, who is renowned for his memorable film and television scores. This one-night-only tribute program celebrates MANCINI’s career in an unprecedented multi-media setting with music and film projections from the composer’s hit films and TV shows, including The Pink Panther, Peter Gunn, Days of Wine and Roses, Hatari, Charade, Mr. Lucky, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and many more. The concert features an all-star roster of special guest artists, backed by the University of Miami Frost School of Music’s extraordinary HENRY MANCINI INSTITUTE ORCHESTRA. Guest soloists include international superstar JON SECADA; sultry vocalist and Grammy nominee MONICA MANCINI - daughter of the late MANCINI; the powerhouse vocalist heralded by the Huffington Post as “this generation’s First Lady of Jazz” NICOLE HENRY; and the Miami debut of New York based French singer CYRILLE AIMÉE, who recently took top prize in the first-ever Sarah Vaughan International Vocal Competition. Also on the bill are multi-Grammy winning saxophonist TOM SCOTT and Grammy nominated jazz arranger and Dean of the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music SHELLY BERG on piano. This special show will close the Frost School of Music’s annual Festival Miami celebration.

Knight Concert Hall The world-renowned JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER ORCHESTRA and its esteemed Artistic Director WYNTON MARSALIS will perform a glorious program of holiday big band favorites, with special guest vocalist CÉCILE MCLORIN SALVANT – the sensational 23-year old Miami native who won the 2010 Thelonious Monk Competition. SALVANT’s ability to refract the styles of such iconic performers as Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday and Valaida Snow with 21st century freshness, expressivity, and soulfulness gives new meaning to MARSALIS’ mantra “all jazz is modern.” The JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER ORCHESTRA is known for its stylistic authenticity and its stellar performances of choice instrumental arrangements from the books of such key swing era units as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, and Tommy Dorsey. The remarkably versatile orchestra, comprising 15 of today’s finest jazz soloists and ensemble players, was formed as Lincoln Center’s resident orchestra in 1988. JAZZ ROOTS – A Larry Rosen Jazz Series: AN EVENING WITH CHRIS BOTTI January 17, 2014 at 8 p.m. John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall This evening features a crowd-pleasing program headlined by Platinum-selling jazz trumpeter CHRIS BOTTI, who earned a Grammy Award this year for “Best Pop Instrumental Album” for his recording Impressions.Throughout his storied career, BOTTI has created a series of recordings that have made him a virtual genre-of-one in the realm of contemporary jazz while at the same time capturing the attention of the pop music world. The charismatic performer made his initial splash on the pop music scene during his stint with Paul Simon's band, and later achieved international notoriety as a featured soloist on Sting's Brand New Day world tour. Since then, BOTTI has thoroughly established himself as one of the important, innovative figures of the contemporary music world, playing to packed houses worldwide and selling more than three million albums. The star trumpeter has found a form of creative expression that begins in jazz and expands beyond the limits of any single genre, and he has earned both critical acclaim and mainstream appreciation for a succession of bestselling albums. This performance is being underwritten by Sue Miller on behalf of the Miller Family Foundation. JAZZ ROOTS – A Larry Rosen Jazz Series: PAT METHENY UNITY GROUP February 7, 2014 at 8 p.m. John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall South Florida is in for a once-in-a-lifetime musical experience when the PAT METHENY UNITY GROUP makes its Miami debut in February. A 20-time Grammy Award winner, PAT METHENY’s versatility as an artist is almost nearly without peer on any instrument. Throughout his 40-year career, he has continued to re-define the genre by utilizing new technology and constantly working to evolve the improvisational and sonic potential of his instrument. He has performed with artists as diverse as Steve Reich to Ornette Coleman to Herbie Hancock to Jim Hall to Milton Nascimento to David Bowie. METHENY has won countless polls as "Best Jazz Guitarist" and awards, including three gold records, as well as Grammy Awards in a variety of categories including Best Rock Instrumental, Best Contemporary Jazz Recording, Best Jazz Instrumental Solo and Best Instrumental Composition.

The PAT METHENY UNITY GROUP offers a platform for the guitar wizard to showcase the broad spectrum of work that he has created as a bandleader over the years in one all-star ensemble. The Group features a new quintet from the guitarist, with longtime collaborative drummer Antonio Sanchez, legendary sax-man Chris Potter, bassist Ben Williams, and multi-instrumentalist Giulio Carmassi as the most recent addition. The program will include highlights from the guitarist’s award-winning recordings as well as the new ensemble’s highly-anticipated 2014 release. JAZZ ROOTS – A Larry Rosen Jazz Series: NEW ORLEANS Aaron Neville and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band March 14, 2014 at 8 p.m. John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall New Orleans’ reigning prince of R&B and soul, AARON NEVILLE, and its world famous DIRTY DOZEN BRASS BAND will bring the essence and spirit of the birthplace of jazz to Miami as they take concert-goers on a musical journey through New Orleans style jazz, blues, and funk. Throughout his illustrious career, AARON NEVILLE has moved seamlessly back and forth between solo work and his role in the first family of New Orleans music, The Neville Brothers. His first hit single was the landmark “Tell It Like It Is,” which sold over one million copies and was awarded a gold disc. The beloved crooner went on to win Grammy Awards for his triple-Platinum collaboration with Linda Ronstadt Cry Like a Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind. His most recent recording, My True Story, represents a culmination of the soul/R&B legend’s 40-plus year career. A national treasure, the DIRTY DOZEN BRASS BAND is heralded with revolutionizing the New Orleans brass band style by incorporating funk and bebop into the traditional New Orleans style and extending the music from the Big Easy into the 21st century. This horn-funk powerhouse has stood the test of time and developed a deep following through 35 years on the road. The band has performed and/or recorded with David Bowie, Elvis Costello, the Black Crowes, Widespread Panic, and other major artists, and has toured over 30 countries on five continents. JAZZ ROOTS – A Larry Rosen Jazz Series: A TWIST OF JOBIM – A TRIBUTE TO ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM Lee Ritenour, Daniel Jobim, Luiza Jobim, Dave Grusin and special guest Joao Bosco April 11, 2014 at 8 p.m. John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall In celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month in April, the grand finale concert of the JAZZ ROOTS 2013-14 season will celebrate the phenomenal artistry of ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM – the prolific Brazilian composer/musician who introduced bossa nova to the world with “The Girl from Ipanema.” One of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century, JOBIM’s bossa nova style influenced and inspired his contemporaries as well as musicians today. Miami will be transformed into Rio when two generations of JOBIM’s family, including his daughter/singer LUIZA JOBIM and grandson/pianist DANIEL JOBIM, along with Brazilian vocal star JOAO BOSCO perform extraordinary renditions of time-honored tunes from the JOBIM songbook such as “Desafinado,” “Corcovado,” “Dindi,” “Waters of March,” and “Chega de Suadade,” many of which have been recorded by the international royalty of popular music. Also featured on this historic concert will be the multi-Platinum guitar master LEE RITENOUR, who started his professional career with Brazilian music legend Sergio Mendes, plus Academy Award-winning composer/arranger and pianist DAVE GRUSIN. Longtime artistic collaborators RITENOUR and GRUSIN have recorded several projects together, including the Grammy-winning Brazilian album, Harlequin, and the multi-artist tribute recording, A Twist of Jobim. JAZZ ROOTS – A Larry Rosen Jazz Series was co-created by the Adrienne Arsht Center in 2008 in collaboration with music industry entrepreneur Larry Rosen, and is currently celebrating its fifth anniversary season. As part of this groundbreaking series, the Arsht Center has presented a rich variety of thematically-based concerts exploring the spectrum of jazz. With six concerts annually, the series has featured hundreds of the greatest living jazz artists/ensembles on the scene today, in

addition to introducing Miami audiences to rising stars and local talent. JAZZ ROOTS has showcased every unique style and incarnation of jazz – from Latin jazz and fusion to bossa nova and straight ahead, as well as presented tribute programs honoring American icons Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane. Since its inception, the series has drawn more than 50,000 jazz lovers to the Arsht Center’s Knight Concert Hall for memorable evenings with such jazz superstars as George Benson, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Dave Brubeck, Chick Corea, Paquito D’Rivera, Michael Feinstein, Dave Grusin, Keith Jarrett, Eddie Palmieri, Tito Puente, and Sonny Rollins, as well as world-class ensembles, including the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, the Count Basie Orchestra, and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. Miami has never before seen a jazz series of this magnitude and success. Quincy Jones has heralded JAZZ ROOTS as “the most important new jazz and educational series in America!” This history-making series has sold-out more than two dozen concerts since it was launched five years ago.
