ADTC Newsletter | Vol. 1 | Dec ‘2015 3

It is with much joy & anticipation that we celebrate the launch of the Newsletter of Arabian Dreams Toastmasters Club (ADTC) From Dreams to Reality for the term 2015 – 2016.I started my toastmaster journey with ADTC at the end of 2013. My journey has not been easy as I was constantly torn between work, family commitments & Toastmasters. At times I even wondered am I doing the right thing - taking away time I can spend with family & attending or preparing for a Toastmasters meeting? Fast forward to the present, the biggest lesson I have learnt is Toastmasters is more than just public speaking. Its friends & Mentors that are there when you need them. It's a confidence to put forth your thoughts across to a larger audience. Its opportunity & inspiration. But as Jim Rohn said “Your life does not get better by chance. Your life gets better only by change”. It's never too late when it comes to self development. Every small or big thing you learn has a ripple effect in other areas of life. This issue comprises of activities of snippets of past meetings of the club, Introduction of Excom & new members of the club & insightful articles from our members.I would like to thank TM Ganesh Raman, TM V.P.Menon, TM Chandresh Vasa, MTM Cheryl Pinto,TM Kumaresh, TM Hariharan, TM Prabhu Velan, & TM Ankit Mehra for their contributions to the newsletter. My sincere thanks to District Director DTM Sujit, Division Director TM Prabhdeep Singh for sharing their messages & International Toastmaster winner TM Mohamed Qahtani for a Q & A session for the newsletter.

Hope you all enjoy reading the newsletter as much as I have enjoyed putting it together, I'm honoured to be part of ADTC. Start turning your dreams into reality in the coming New year like I did with mine

Till this moment , I get times when I still can't believe it is true. but it has been a blessing and a chance to give my message to more people

4. What tips would you give to any toastmaster members for choosing a topic & winning a contest? Choose something universal, a message the entire world can relate to, and remember that your audience is your main focus . tell them what they want to hear

5. How do you manage so many visits to other clubs along with your work & family? It is very hectic and exhausting yet it is very rewarding . I love speaking and inspiring people and I'll keep doing it

Dear TMs of Arabian Dreams TM Club

Greetings on behalf of D20!

At the outset I must say though I haven't been to your club and do plan to visit soon.

Through this message I only wish to emphasize on four things.

1. Have respect for the program and adhere to quality in terms of the projects you do. Be sincere to the art, don't run behind the qualications alone. Don't do a role in leadership "because" it is needed for a higher award, instead do it for the love of the movement.

2. Do not be in a hurry to nish. You learn more when you pause and reect and more importantly enjoy the journey. So remember there's no rush, reach when you feel you have arrived.

3. Know why you are in your club or in the movement. Do not simply be a bench warmer just paying your membership. Be active in some role or the other, speaker, leader, mentor, coach or any small role in every single meeting. The more you give the more you get.

4. Do your own work. There may be laggards, people who wing their projects all kinds of miscreants who want the "easy" way out. True they may get "certied" faster, but there's a difference between real competence and a badge or a certicate alone. Do all work sincerely and the people will know your greatness anyway. Strive not to be great or greatest, but be a legend so your life and its time will serve as an inspiration.

If you get what you want out of Toastmasters you will never get out of Toastmasters.

ADTC Newsletter | Vol. 1 | Dec ‘2015 10

Few days, will mark the completion of the year 2015. The honor of getting elected as Division Director of Division F in this year is a challenge as well as an honor. The continuing journey in toastmasters has been very enriching. Every day! Every month and Every Year! I have been a toastmaster there has been a lot of learning around!

This life we live is our own and we have every year to decide, how we want to live! But our friends can always show us the light! If I have to give a message through this write-up, then my message would be to be a disciplined toastmaster. Everything what we do, requires discipline for achieving the effective results and the same principle applies here. The journey of toastmasters is the journey of developing communication and leadership skills. And so many researches prove that, these two are the most important skills for improving yourself and growing your career. Learning is what we try to do, every second of ours and toastmasters is all about learning. But we can always talk about how we learn. It is also important for us that we have an open mindset and we have to make efforts to learn. When we are ready to be positive, positive things come our way!

Arabian Dreams Toastmasters Club hold special place for me and whenever, I visit, I learn something new. I am very happy to see how the club has been progressing in this year and I wish the club and all its members a grand success!!

Very truly yoursStay Blessed!!!

Imagine the scene... A man sitting in pub enjoying the music with eyes closed. Apparently, he has had something in the afternoon that has made him BREAK WIND often. So, he decides to synchronise the FAT FEROCIOUS FLATUS with the music. If, it went fast or slow, loud or soft so did the atus. Then, a waiter walks up to him and serves him a drink which makes him open his eyes. To his amazement, the entire pub is staring at him. Oh! That is when the man realised that the music was playing through the ear plugs of his iPod. Technology, at times makes us forget who we are!IF NECESSITY IS THE MOTHER OF ALL INVENTIONS; LAZINESS IS THE FATHER. I am sure we all begin our day by brushing our teeth. We use mechanised tooth brushes, toothpaste and mouth wash to feel fresh. The INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE OF DENTISTS states that the chances of us becoming EDENTULOUS are nearly 40% higher as compared to our ancestors in spite of all the advancement. How many of us knew that the best cure for elbow disorders is brushing our teeth. The lack of time spent on brushing our teeth is a major cause of TENNIS ELBOW nowadays. Now, after the entire morning chore you are on your way to work. Let us say, you use the public transport. There is something very peculiar you would notice; HEADS SHAKING IN ALL DIRECTIONS. Seems like they are exercising for SPONDILITIS and some people are talking even to INVISIBLE FIGURES. The culprit is either a smart phone or a table. And, this for a short travels as much as an hour and a half. Wonder, how our parents and grandparents managed to travel long hours without any of these GIZMOS. A study by the Maldivian Government states that spouses spend 30% percent less time with each other and are dedicating that time to their gadgets. You must be wondering why Maldives after all! It is the country with the highest DIVORCE RATES in the world. It also said that 87% of this time is spent on Internet based applications such as CHATS and EMAILS. In spite of all these high speed communication systems we have today, we complain about not having enough time for our LOVED ONES or keep in touch with them. Imagine fty years ago, when a letter took seven days to reach your next door neighbour by post. Book a telephonic call and wait for it to be connected. Furthermore, if it got connected you had to scream so much that the person on the other side did not need a phone to hear you.As per the INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL FOR OPTAHLMOLOGY states that the most favourite pastime today is GARBAGE IN GARBAGE OUT. And, Men, Women and Children all alike, have today become slaves to it. Guess what it could be? It is the IDIOT BOX, the television. The World Health Organization claims that television is again one of the major causes for obesity in all adults and children and people spend nearly 60% of their leisure time watching the television turning them into COUCHED POTATOES. A recent study by SONY Electronics claims that the item most broken on purpose is the REMOTE CONTROL. How true - “PROGRESS IS MAN'S ABILITY TO COMPLICATE SIMPLICITY”.Our lives are precious and the moments we spend with our loved ones priceless. So, let us all experience the bliss of being among our loved ones. Firstly, PLAN IT – Block time in the day for your loved ones. The secret is PLAN YOUR WORK AND WORK YOUR PLAN. Secondly, STOP PROCASTINATING – There is never the right time. Anytime is the right time. The secret is IT IS NOT ABOUT TIMING, BUT TIME IN. And, lastly EAT AT LEAST ONE MEAL TOGETHER. The secret is THE FAMILY THAT EATS TOGETHER STAYS TOGETHER. Remember Leonardo da Vinci said “SIMPLICITY IS THE ULTIMATE SOPHISTICATION”. So, let us all today SIMPLIFY SOPHISTICATED SITUATIONS.

My Toastmaster Journey Begins I love public speaking and to train others, especially in my company. Sometimes, in those training sessions, I was not so uent and gasping for words. At that particular time, I was introduced to the Arabian Dreams Toastmaster Club by my close friend and mentor Mr. Kumaresh . Toastmasters! It was one of the best decisions I had ever made; but it wasn't without its challenges. I joined the Toastmasters Club in January 2014 and gave my Ice breaker speech in the same month itself. It was a pleasant but trembling experience. I felt very happy because I was speaking for 6 mts.15 sec without the help of the notes and so uently. I was appreciated by all for the script and the humour part. That appreciation pushed me to give my P2 in the month of March 14 and ran faster to nish my P7 before December 14.Then I took a big gap of not giving presentation for the next six months, but somewhat managed to regain my form to complete the CC by November 15.Trouble with Table TopicsMy rst challenge was the part of the meeting Toastmasters call “Table Topics”, where you are given a topic at random and you have to speak about it for two minutes. It sounds simple, right? It was real nightmare for me as many a times I was not able to complete more than a minute. Later I understood the trick of how to talk for the table topics. This experience helped me in the real life to initiate the speech condently with unknown people and diverting their attention to me.TMOD role:-TMOD role is like the Captain of the ship. I did the TMOD role two times and I learned a lot from that. I considered myself as a Compere who was hosting a big show. It was an amazing experience.Sergeant at arms:-This was my rst Excom role for the year 2014 - 15and I loved it. I was the opening batsman for all the meetings and usually started with a bang. This experience gave me the condence to speak anywhere, anytime.Secretary :-Currently I am the Secretary of the club for the 2015-16. I suggest all to come to Toast master club because, these are the bonus points for choosing Toastmaster.· It's never too late when it comes to self development as I started this exercise very late.· Toastmaster's clubs are positive energy reservoirs. It will make you feel positive because you are in the company of positive people which make you to learn better, perform better and your impact increases by many folds. · “Teaching is twice learning”. You will feel happy in helping others (Toastmaster) to succeed and share your learning with others.I welcome you all to join the Toastmasters and enjoy the envy of being a Toastmaster.

There are many times in life when we wish to say “NO” but we can't. We are worried what effect saying “NO” will have on our relationship with the other person. We just hate the thought of hurting someone else's feelings. It could be telling your mentee in Toastmasters “I can't write your speech for you”, refusing to buy that PS3 game for your teenage son, turning down a friends request for nancial help or even saying “NO” to your boss who dumps all his work on you. Whether trivial or tormenting, each of these moments is an exercise in that poorly understood power, namely, the power of “NO”.

If we don't get better at saying “NO,”· Other peoples' priorities will take precedence over ours.· Mere acquaintances—people we barely know!—will crowd out time with family and close friends.· We will not have the time we need for rest and recovery.· We will end up frustrated and stressed.· We won't be able to say “yes” to the really important things.· We would end up doing things which we will later repent doing.

Remember, every time we say “NO” to something that is not important, we are saying “YES” to something that is.Organizational psychologist Adam Grant, author of Give and Take and a professor at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, points to the power of “NO” as necessary to carve time for one's own goals and agenda. Without it, other people dictate your schedule and limit your accomplishments. Says Grant, "Saying “NO” is especially huge in establishing a work/life balance. Without that ability, work will cannibalize your life.”

No also makes other people respect you and your time more, Grant notes. "When you are able to say “NO”, people are careful to come to you with only meaningful requests, rather than simply asking for any help you might be able to give."As you get used to saying “NO” strengthen your ability to say “NO” while lowering its cost to your relationships. Several strategies can help you achieve that balance.

1. Replace your automatic “YES” with “I'll think about it.""I'll think about it" puts you in control, softens the ground for “NO”, suggests you are actually weighing important factors, and, most important, allows you the opportunity to think things through.

ADTC Newsletter | Vol. 1 | Dec ‘2015 14

A “NO” that follows thoughtful decision making is a more grounded fence than a “NO” that is fueled by emotional impulse.s International

2. Soften your language.Try "I'm not comfortable with that." "I'd prefer not." "I'd rather..." "Let's agree to disagree here." Or "That's a good/nice/interesting plan, but I won't be able to..." District 20, ToastmasterJust like we Toastmasters use the Sandwich approach in Evaluation, this last is a variant of the Oreo cookie communication strategy, in which you say something positive ("You are such a warm and charming person"), sandwich in the lling of a tactful No ("I don't think you and I have a romantic future"), and then end with another cookie ("I have so enjoyed the time we've spent together; you really make me laugh"). You are still delivering a clear and powerful “NO”, and the other person well understands that. This No, sweeter and softer, may go down better.

3. Contain your feelings.“NO” is best deployed pleasantly with an air of Zen calm. (Tricky, because you are likely feeling very far from it.) Outward calm helps quiet your inner turmoil. What's more, it will reduce the negative impact of your No on the brain of your audience. The jolt that No delivers is big enough without a tsunami of anger and invective.

4. Refer to your commitment to others.Say “NO” without appearing selsh or uncaring by referencing your conicting obligations to other people. "I'd love to help, but I have already agreed to help my mother/colleague/student then, and I can't let him/her down.”

5. Realize you represent others.Wharton's Adam Grant suggests that you are likely to negotiate more assertively if you recognize, or even imagine, that you are negotiating a salary on behalf of your family or negotiating a sale on behalf of your company. When it's not just your own interest at stake, you may nd it easier to say No to a lowball offer.

6. Rehearse.Ongoing situations—a demanding boss who keeps piling on the work, a needy family member who never limits her requests, a mate who badgers until you cave—can benet from your thoughtful, private rehearsal. You may design one clear, respectful No and keep repeating it no matter what comes your way. ("I cannot take on another project, Sir, because my plate is too full." "I cannot take on another project, Sir, because my plate is too full.") Repeat politely until the boss nally hears you.

Or, if you practice long enough, you might just become strong enough to listen to any inappropriate, uncomfortable, excessive request, pause for breath, and then deliver your one-word, no-explanation verdict: “NO”.

Warm RegardsVP Me”NO”n

Bang, the new, silver Honda Accord's windshield smashed by a Cherry, a cricket ball. The boys who were playing cricket at a distance suddenly disappeared leaving the batsman to lead the off-court settlement with the car owner. Oh, no it wasn't my fault; it was the bowler, defended the boy. Watching this from the balcony, I wondered, what makes this boy lie even after he was caught red-handed.Eve's lie sows the seeds of the modern human race and we, the descendants use white lies to keep us alive. White Lies, how many time did we used this technique in our lives? Almost every day during childhood and occasionally nowadays, or, is it the other way? Hello Dreamers, White lie, a minor, unimportant lie uttered in the interests of tact or politeness colors our life as long as it does not harm anyone.Don't rub and squeeze your eyes too much. It might drop from its place to stomach. I remember telling my son whenever he cried too much. He believed this till he was 8 years old. Son, if you lie, you will go to hell where you will be fried live: my mom told. Have you heard that the adolescent girls have to keep a piece of iron with them to keep away the roaming ghosts at night? These lies kept us disciplined. Wow, it is delicious; did you cook this? I guarantee that this one has extended many people's life including mine. Oh, honey, you look so gorgeous on this dress: it certainly saved me time and money. Honey, I will be ready by ten minutes – it will take another 3 – 4 hoursSir, your table will be ready by 5 minutes – you better look for another restaurantOh, yeah that makes sense – Complete nonsenseThank you so much, I just loved it – Please leave me aloneYeah, you are gorgeous on that dress – when will you get some fashion senseI am just 24, well built, good looking – never believe this in an online chat. These evergreen lies kept us happy in our social life.White lies in child age is unforgivable, during teenage is wrong, for lovers it is an art, for lawyers its their job, for the politician it is a must, for the managers it is a weapon, for employees it is an excuse and for a married men/ women it is a lifesaving skill. We lie for the fear of rejection, conict, punishment, harm and loss. While all is fair in love and war, sometimes white lies go overboard and cross its limits like the other day while I was in the plane, the hoax call about the bomb made us run helter shelter. Later I learned that it was someone's trick to delay the plane. Joe Biden lost his potential US presidential candidature because he lied about his law degree and eventually withdrew his bid. Of late White lies have progressed from a discipline tool to a survival mechanism. While many argue about the purpose and usage of lies as good and bad, the famous sage from TamilNadu, Thiruvalluvar said before 2000 years as, Even untruth might attain the value of truth: if it is productive of unmixed good, without the least blemish. Let us keep it this way and make the world an enjoyable and trustful without crossing the boundaries.

Everyone who joins Toastmasters, initially has a single objective – to complete ten projects and become a Competent Communicator (CC). Having achieved the CC title this year, I feel these ten projects not just make a speaker Competent but also Condent, Captivating and Charismatic Communicator. My journey to reach CC though took me almost 18 months to complete, I felt the importance should always be on how much you learn and improve from every speech that you deliver. For me personally, I have gained a lot of experience and now I understand the art of what goes on to make a good speech. The most important part of any speech in toastmasters is to achieve the objective of the project. For me, the most crucial project speeches are Project 2 – Structure a Speech, Project 4- How you say it, Project 5- Body language and Project 6- Voice modulation. These projects are the crux of any great speech and especially at the Advanced Level. To become a compelling speaker one must master these four projects; and the best way to do so is to read the Toastmasters manual- word by word. The manual really helps in dening and explaining the objectives and makes life much easier when you sit down to write your speech. There are two other methods I used during the course of last 18 months to develop my public speaking skills. First, to take my speech evaluations seriously. I often asked members in addition to my evaluator to give their honest feedback. To pluck a rose, one has to risk getting hurt by the thorns. At times, I did get blunt and 'on the face'feedbacks, but that is something which is required in order to get to the next level.Second is,Mentoring. Having your speech mentored really makes a difference. I practice and get a review of my speech from the mentor before actually delivering it on stage- Hence, there is time to edit my speech, bring in the necessary suggestions and deliver a speech of a higher standard. The rst objective of joining Toastmasters for me is over. But the journey to greater levels of public speaking has just begun!Take the plunge and commit yourself in completing your CC or for that matter your advance levels.Satisfaction is when a Toastmaster from another club met me last week and still remembered my holiday in Seychelles which was my Project 5!

My toastmaster's journey is about 4 years now. ADTC is my rst club as a Toastmasters Journey. I still remember the rst demo meeting held in Karama Center under the club name 'Karama Toastmasters club”. I have learnt a lot from this club. I have also served 2 years as a Treasurer for the club. During this tenure, I have completed my CC, CL and ALB certication. This club gave me the courage to start a new club with the organization which I work with.

I have discussed the concept with my Chief Financial Ofcer. He liked the concept of Toastmaster and asked me to go ahead with the formation of the club. It was a huge responsibility on me. I spoke to few senior toastmasters from our club (ADTC) and they have shown their full support to me. We have started CBD TOASTMASTER club in March 2015.

Let me tell you that being a corporate it has its own advantages and challenges. Being the corporate club, we do not have problem with funds. We do not have to nd the venue and pay for the charges. We do not have to worry about technical requirements i.e. laptop, projector and other meeting requirements. The biggest challenge is to bring the people to the club. When we had a demo session in the ofce, I had a great response from the staff. Everybody liked the concept well. We started the meetings. Initial response was very good. At the time I started facing the issue of attendance. The main reason I found is members getting stuck to their ofce due to work commitment. Since our meeting is after ofce hours, some of the members who stays in Sharjah, do not want to attend the meeting because it get them very late to reach home. These are some of the challenges I am facing till date.

At the same time, I must tell you that I have full support from the management. The president of the club who is also a CFO of the organization is always coming to the meeting apart from his busy schedule. I also want to convey a big 'Thank you' to some of senior toastmasters from ADTC that they have extended their full support to me. Whenever, I required they always stood next to me.

A toastmaster is my passion and I would like to continue to work towards it. I know there are challenges on my way but I am also sure that whatever knowledge I have and with the support of senior toastmasters from other clubs, I will be succeeding in my goal.
