OPPORTUNITIESADTI is a division of
APPLIED DRILLING TECHNOLOGY INTERNATIONALADTI is a division of Transocean, the world’s largest drilling contractor. We have offices in Aberdeen and Houston, and through our parent company we can access operations worldwide, providing engineers with varied international development opportunities.
ADTI has more than 30 years of experience with turnkey well drilling and project management operations. We’ve drilled over 1,600 wells, totalling more than 16 million feet of hole worldwide for a wide range of operators, from small independents to super majors. ADTI has faced all types of challenges, drilling wells to depths in excess of 20,000 feet and designing and completing the world’s first 15,000 psi subsea well.
Turnkey is a proven business model of drilling wells whereby ADTI accept the risks of getting the well drilled to the target depth and charges a fixed price to the operator for taking those risks. Some of the risks taken during turnkey operations are rig downtime, mechanical failures, geological hole problems and logistics. Thorough planning, outstanding execution and years of experience are the key attributes of a successful turnkey contractor.

The flexible, accredited five year Graduate Development Programme (GDP) allows motivated graduates to become a valued professional with ADTI.
The five year development programme takes new Graduates through three key career phases to becoming Senior Engineers responsible for multi-million dollar operations. Practical ‘hands-on’ rig site experience is augmented by formal technical training. This parallel training philosophy facilitates enhanced career development limited only by your desire to succeed. In addition to technical and practical operational competencies, all ADTI engineers develop the commercial and contractual business skills that make ADTI’s Turnkey operations “leading edge”.
ADTI’s Graduate Development Programme (GDP) is run in parallel with the IMechE’s Monitored Professional Development Scheme (MPDS). The programme is designed to develop the Graduate Engineer to attain a high level of engineering professionalism and responsibility.
Each Graduate upon joining the development programme is assigned a Mentor, an ADTI senior engineer, to provide oversight and guidance. Upon completion of the five year development programme, the Graduate Engineer should be in a position of responsibility to apply for Chartered Engineer Status.
ADTI were amongst the first in the oil industry to gain accreditation through the IMechE for our Graduate Development Programme (GDP). We are currently accredited by both the IMechE and the Energy Institute (EI), which is an independent verification of our robust and successful programme.

THE ADTI GDP
EACH GRADUATE IS ISSUED WITH AN ADTI WELL ENGINEERS COMPETENCY TASK BOOK, WHICH IS A PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT RECORD BOOK.
The Well Engineers Competency Task Book covers the core competencies that we expect our graduates to develop over the course of a five year period of training and initial career development. The task book is divided into three main areas of competence:
PERSONAL
BUSINESS
TECHNICAL
Over 370 different competency tasks are defined, which each engineer must complete during the first five years. The engineer takes complete ownership for completing the tasks and getting them approved and signed off by their Mentor.
This competency based programme ensures that you’ll learn the wide variety of skills necessary to becoming a competent Well Engineer.
REWARDING YOUR DEVELOPMENT
To recognise and reward you for developing your professional competencies, ADTI has a Performance Related Pay (PRP) uplift programme, enabling you to get an uplift in salary each year of your five year development programme. A PRP uplift is earned when you complete a minimum number of competency skills within fixed intervals and undergo an appraisal by your line supervisor and mentor. Which tasks and the order you choose to complete your competency taskbook is completely your choice.
PRP is independent of the company discretionary merit awards, which can help boost your financial remuneration even further. At ADTI, our PRP programme moves you up the salary scale quickly, enabling you to access many other package benefits, serving as yet another reward for participating in this first-class development programme.
“One of the advantages of working for an
international company is that there is an
opportunity to travel. In the next few years,
I may move abroad for up to a year and
therefore know I must be flexible.”
“Working in the drilling industry is a challenging and rewarding career as no two days or projects are the same. The technical boundaries of equipment and current practices are being pushed further, while attempting to complete the wells as economically as possible. This is a dynamic and continually changing career. You never know what challenges face you tomorrow.”
“I started my career with ADTI like everyone else, on the rig, working with the drilling crew. Starting at the wellsite gives you hands-on experience of drilling operations and the basis for understanding how a well is drilled. This is an essential part of your training in becoming a competent and valued Well Engineer. My relief and I were the first Trainee Well Engineers to work with ADTI on Magnus, and we were accepted and treated as ‘normal’ drill crew, no ‘soft’ option just because you have a university education. Working twelve hour shifts in the hostile North Sea is a bit different from working in an air conditioned office!
You soon learn that common sense and attention to detail are two of the most important aspects in the drilling of wells. The work is hard and demanding but the crew spirit teaches you how to work together to get the ‘impossible’ done.”
“Looking back, I never would have
thought I would get to where I am now,
a Chartered Engineer and in a good
position of responsibility. The training
scheme gave me the confidence
to become the very best I could be.”

Your career. Your choice. Your future. 76 Your career. Your choice. Your future.
”IT IS A COMMON BELIEF AT ADTI THAT THE WAY TO LEARN IS WITH HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE.”
OUR DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME CONSISTS OF THREE PHASES:
Phase I: ‘Training Period’: Offshore Training
This initial period of practical training, which each Graduate Engineer goes through lasts for a period of nine to twelve months. You’ll start with five weeks of induction and intensive safety classes to facilitate your transition offshore. This offshore training phase, where you work your way through some of the different rig crew positions, exposes you to the different offshore operations, providing a solid grounding and core knowledge of drilling operations and practices. A greater understanding of rig capabilities will later allow you to optimise well plans. As you gain more experience and technical knowledge, this forms the basis for your continued development as a Well Engineer. Of even greater importance, you become a member of the drilling crew, which builds credibility and better understanding. At the end of this phase you will take six weeks of ‘core’ Well Engineering technical courses to build upon your practical knowledge.
Phase II: Wellsite Drilling Engineer
Equipped with the core technical training, you will be assigned to your first responsible professional role. A Wellsite Drilling Engineer (WSDE) is a member of the offshore engineering supervisory team, reporting directly to the Drilling Supervisor.
During this phase, you will learn to implement the technical well programmes, which have been designed by the onshore Engineering team. You will gain supervisory as well as technical skills, essential to your career ahead. In order to gain operational experience, ideally each Engineer will spend eighteen to twenty four months in this role, rotating through different projects to gain a full range of operational exposure.
Phase III: Developmental Roles
Advancing from WSDE into developmental roles, you are encouraged to try out different areas within Well Engineering, to try to determine the path that interests you and plays to your strengths as an ADTI member. There is a map of potential career paths on page 7. Typically, engineers move onshore into the Engineering team, designing the drilling programmes or you may choose to move into the Subsea or Well Completions teams.
Some engineers decide that the offshore rotational lifestyle suits them and elect to remain offshore becoming Drilling, Subsea or Completions Offshore Operations Supervisors with the responsibility of leading the wellsite operations. Well Engineers may also be offered international secondments within ADTI.
WHAT DOES A WELL ENGINEER DO?PROGRAMME OVERVIEW
• Planning entire drilling and completion programmes
• Designing oil and gas wells in order to maximise production
• Liaising with drilling teams during operations, facilitating problem solving
• Continuing analysis of the entire project to ensure that all problems encountered can be learned from
• Designing mature well workover or abandonment programmes
• Carry out feasibility studies for subsea well decommissioning, extended reach drilling etc
• Preparing tender documents and commercial proposals with the contractual and commercial groups
• Ensuring throughout that the highest safety, environmental and financial performances are attained
Such a diversity of skills cannot be gained overnight. This is why ADTI has developed its competency based development programme to provide Graduate Engineers with the necessary training and experience they need to become highly competent and qualified Well Engineers.
Offshore rotations are typically three weeks on the rig, three weeks onshore fieldbreak leave. Whilst on the rig, you will work twelve hour shifts, days or nights. Full accommodation and recreation facilities are provided offshore. Fieldbreak leave allows you to travel, catch up on studies or just take time to relax.
A WELL ENGINEERS ROLE IS A MULTIFACETED ONE. AS A KEY PART OF THE TEAM, YOU WILL BE INVOLVED IN MANY VARIED ACTIVITIES. THESE MAY INVOLVE:
Your career. Your choice. Your future. 98 Your career. Your choice. Your future.
