PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS/UPDATES:

Literacy Zone

- In collaboration with Wardrobes for Work Program of United Way of Sullivan County, the FWC presented two "Dress for Success" workshops for ESOL and GED classes. The workshops offered practical tips on appropriate interviewing and work attire and no-nonsense advice for building a basic working wardrobe on a tight budget. Students were encouraged to utilize Wardrobes service whenever they were preparing for an interview or starting a new job. Three of our students assisted in the presentation as models.

Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC)

- Our Intermediate HVAC class is a great success! Students are learning how to wire basic protective relay as well as wiring at high and low voltage. They are soldering connection points which require the students to maintain a quality of workmanship. Every aspect of the HVAC circuit is built by the students. All electrical devices and power supplies are safety checked prior to activation.

- After the assembly is proved to operate correctly students inventory the parts & materials used to fabricate the module and move onto the next scenario. Some of the scenario assemblies are working substitutions of very high efficiency furnace units. Students fabricated the entire wiring harness to this 90+afue furnace module.

- These tasks require time and with the available space the teacher can keep the students work staged.

General Educational Development (GED)

- GED Plus o On Friday, March 18, we completed our first GED Plus pilot project. This was an 8 week intensive GED/post secondary

preparation program. It was held 4 days a week for 2 ½ hours a day. Two weekly classes were devoted solely to math and two classes to critical reading and writing. College survival and study skills were also addressed. All students attended a general math workshop for 3 hours on Mondays. Although we started out with several more, three students completed the pilot. All reported that they found the classes very helpful. Below are the Pre and Post test results as well as the results of the Official Practice Test for the GED:

TABE Test Language Arts: Pre Post Student #1 7.8 10.4

Student #2 6.7 8.4 Student #3 6.0 11.5 Reading: Student #1 12.9+ 12.9+ Student #2 12.9+ 12.9+ Student #3 12.9+ 12.9+ Math: Student #1 6.9 12.9 Student #2 8.2 9.0 Student #3 10.3 12.9 Official GED Practice Test Language Arts Writing: Student #1 410 580 Student #2 200 510 Student #3 540 580

Math: Student #1 490 580 Student #2 490 did not return to retest Student #3 440 490 Two students took the actual GED test on March 11&12. One was scheduled to take it March 25&26. As of yet, no one has received results. - Summary: The GED Plus was very successful for the students who participated. Both teachers felt that they have a better

sense of what is possible in a short intensive program and how best to accomplish it. Revisions to curriculum and material selection are inevitable.

- We anticipate offering the GED Plus again in Fall of 2011. Until then, the teachers will develop a series of GED Plus packets for

those students in our current ABE/GED classes who want to prepare for post-secondary training/education.
