No. unknown) (Tk 2) Notes: This album by a well-known French comic duo starts out with a sketch entitled, “Autocar pour Lourdes.” What follows is a series of spoofs on the religious pilgrimage to Lourdes in the French Pyrenees. This particular piece concerns the natural cave shrine there, but nothing is known about the content. Judging by the much longer live performance this routine consists mainly of comments on the various pilgrims that are passing by at Lourdes. Lucienne says that the wooden crutches hanging by the cave are probably there to hold bouquets of flowers. (Tks 1 to 27) Notes: Under the title “I’ve Already Talked to You About Bats,” this CD presents several satiric comedy sketches about bats performed before a live audience, plus the recorded sounds of different species. The well-known Belgian caver Robert Dejardin tells us – “Régulièrement, les emissions de la RTBF [Radio Télévision Belge Française], passe sur antenne TV et radio, Le Jeu des Dictionnaires. Voici la rediffusion de plusieurs de ces morceaux se rapportant uniquement aux chauves-souris… Nous reconnaîtrons aussi les sons de plusieurs chiroptères: l’oreillard, le grand murin, le rhinolophe et quelques vespertilionidés. Et nous pouvons en rire, puisque les ‘chauves sourient’ et en rient. Rires souvent bâtis sur des histories scatologiques!” (Dejardin 2011) [The programs of RTBF regularly broadcast on television and radio, Le Jeu des Dictionnaires (The Game of Dictionaries). Here we have the reissuing of several of these sketches all related uniquely to bats. We can also recognize the sounds of several bats: long-eared bat, mouse-eared bat, horseshoe bat, and several from the family vespertilionidae. We can laugh, since the “smiling bats” are laughing. Laughs often based on scatological stories.] This program was part of the special activities around La Nuit Europeenne des Chauves-souris [The European Night for Bats] – “ ’Est-ce que je vous ai déjà parlé des chauves-souris ? Vous savez, ces petits mammifères qui dorment la tête en bas ? ’ Oui, répondent à Pierre Kroll les adeptes du Jeu des dictionnaires, qui commencent tout doucement à connaître les moeurs surprenantes de ces animaux. Mais, outre les passionnés de chauves-souris et, dans une moindre mesure, les auditeurs de l’émission, le grand public ne les connaît pas vraiment. Les chiroptères pâtissent d’ailleurs depuis la nuit des temps de leur réputation de ‘monstres hideux assoiffés de sang. ‘ Pour contrer cette image et sensibiliser le grand public à la disparition de nombreuses espèces, les bénévoles de Plecotus, un groupe de travail de l’ASBL Natagora, participent ce samedi, à la Nuit des chauves-souris, organisée conjointement dans la majorité des pays européens. Plus d’une trentaine de sites accueilleront en Belgique des animations gratuites pour découvrir cet animal qui a longtemps frappé les imaginaires. But besides those who love bats and, to a lesser extent, listeners of the show, the larger public does not really know them. From the dawn of time bats also suffer from their reputation as a "hideous monsters thirsty for blood." To counter that image and to make the public aware of the disappearance of many species, the volunteers of Plecotus, a working group of the association Natagora, participate this Saturday for the Night of the Bat, jointly organized in most countries in Europe. More than thirty sites in Belgium will host free events to discover this animal that has long struck the imagination. In Brussels, two meeting places are planned.] Some of the jokes here for the TV program, Le Jeu des Dictionnaires, revolve around the idea –

“Les chauves-souris : bêtises, sottises, âneries, blagues, insanités, inventions, mensonges et quelques vérités sur ces petits animaux fascinants qui n'ont des problèmes que pour déféquer la nuit la tête en bas.“ (Anon. n.d.) [Bats: nonsense, foolishness, stupidity, jokes, madness, fabrications, lies, and a few truths about these fascinating little animals that have some problems at night to defecate upside down.] Nevertheless, just taking into account the titles of the different sketches and without an extensive knowledge of Belgian slang, it would appear quite difficult for the average foreigner to understand the humor here.

With a coded message an young amateur detective, Isidore Beautrelet, tries to track down the location of this treasure. His research leads him eventually by chance to Etratat on the English Channel in Seine-Maritime where he stumbles into the Chambre des Demoiselles, a small artificial cave, at the top of the chalk cliffs there. With a coded message in hand he is able to work out that he is in the right place and following the codes he spots the ruins nearby and finds the way to open a secret door. By precaution he later returns with the police, passes a second door, and descends a long flight of stairs that lead down inside the cilffs to submarine cave under the channel. The cave in turn leads to a huge artificial cavity within the needle (L’Aiguille), a high chalk pinnacle just off the coast. This cavity has several floors all stacked one above the other within the pinnacle. Here the police wait while Isidore climbs one of three stairs which finds him five levels up in the Salle de repas [Dining Room] where he meets Arsene Lupin and his lover Raymonde. Here they have dinner and Lupin explains that the Needle once belonged to many different Kings of France before he found it. Then Lupin takes him on a tour of the upper levels, all filled with various treasures: starting with paintings, tapestries, clocks, books, lace, valuable trinkets, and finally at the top the Salle du trésor [Treasure Room] (see profile above). They have to move rapidly because they can hear the police breaking down doors below them that the servant, Charolais, had barred. Lupin shows him many treasures plus a chest filled with precious stones that once belong to French queens. Lupin writes on the wall that he bequeaths all these treasures to the Louvre Museum. The police finally break in, but, using Isadore as a shield, Lupin escapes by a secret door. They quickly descend a separate spiral staircase that runs around inside the outer flanks of the pinnacle. At the bottom they join Raymonde and Charolais in another large natural cave where a small submarine is docked. The marine cave connects with sea outside by a small passage that is above water only at low tide, but underwater at high tide. The opening is closed by a camouflaged door that opens at high tide, but closes and hides the opening at low tide. They all board the sub and escape under the channel while a French naval torpedo boat and several fishing boats search for them on the surface. They slip by and go to Port-Lupin somewhere further east along that coast. This reading was originally released by Livraphone in 1999 on 4 cassettes. Notes: A world classic of prehistoric man fiction that was made into a major film in 1981 by Jean-Jacques Annaud (English title, Quest for Fire). We are told by a French prehistorian that this novel inspired numerous vocations to the study of prehistoric man (Nougier 1977), much as Jules Verne’s classic, Voyage au centre de la terre, inspired many a caver throughout the world. This reading is a greatly abbreviated rendering of the original text, touching only certain highlights of the tale. Music is inserted as bridge between some sections. At the start of some selections the narrator, using a different voice, summarizes the preceding events. Four of the selection headings on this disc correspond with the chapter headings in the original book. The others rephrase the original chapter titles. Side One begins with the prehistoric Oulhamr tribe finding their fire dead, destroyed by their enemies. Three of them, Noah, Gaw, and Nam, volunteer to venture out and recover the fire. The second selection, Dans la caverne [In the Cave] (in the book Part 1, Chapter 3), is the only part of this disc that has action taking place in a cave. 2. DANS LA CAVERNE (In the Cave) – Noah, Gaw, and Nam have been traveling for 9 days. They camp in a cave and Gaw is on guard. He sees a massive silhouette and hears a deep growl. (Sound of bear growl.) “L’ours gris!” [The grey bear]. (A silence between sentences.) They construct a stone wall at the entrance. The bear approaches, pushes on it, and breaks it down. Noah and Gaw jump to the back of the cave. Nam is caught is the bear’s grip. Noah attacks with his knotty club and strikes the bear in the head and on the spine, killing it (see illustration below center by Françoise Boudignon).

In the original story there were two other important sections involving caves that do not appear on the disc. No attempt will be made here to summarize all the other selections on this disc, which do not involve caves. Side Two begins with Noah attacking the camp of the Kzamms and stealing a fire cage. Later, among the Wah tribe, Noah learns from a woman how to make fire by striking two stones together, flint and marcasite. Eventually Noah, Gaw, and Nam return triumphantly with the fire to the Oulhamrs. The 12-page booklet of liner notes is broken down into four parts: L’Auteur (The Author); L’Oeuve (The Work), A.
