Stoke-on-Trent is a city with bold ambitions.

We want to see high growth in the local economy over the next few years, to help improve the lives of all our city’s residents and the wider region.

But for that growth and its benefits to become a reality, the City will need lots of new skills; and that’s where our adult learning programme comes in.

From the key skills of English and maths right through to high-tech skills such as IT programming and networking, here at Stoke on Trent College we deliver the learning that will help you achieve your aspirations and the City to achieve its ambitions.

Best of all, we are working hand in hand with the likes of the City Council to develop training and courses in readiness for jobs that are coming here soon, such the District Heat Network, so that it will be local people who are equipped with the skills that those new jobs demand.

So if you are looking to be part of Stoke’s brighter future, then your starting point could be to gain the skills that will help you get there, with Stoke on Trent College. It may mean gaining qualifications to help you climb your current career ladder, developing new skills for an entirely new profession, or perhaps regaining your confidence so that you can get back into work – whatever your aim, we will help you to access the learning that you need, so that your aspirations can be realised.

Equality and Diversity Statement

Equality at Stoke on Trent College means supporting everyone to fulfil their potential. Diversity at Stoke on Trent College means respecting the fact that everyone is unique and celebrating the benefits this brings. HEALTH, SAFETY & SECURITY

Peter Bolam

"This was a well structured and extremely useful first aid course. I have learned a lot and feel that I am now well prepared to act in the event of an emergency to help and perhaps even save a person’s life. Our group was small enough to allow good interaction and the literature provided is a great resource to keep our knowledge topped up."

~These courses are offered on multiple dates throughout the year.

MATHS & ENGLISH

Mike Tyler

Mike Tyler took his Maths GCSE at the age of 44. “At 16 my Maths teacher handed my results to me and said he was very disappointed. I’m mid 40s now and it’s stuck with me ever since. I have two children in primary school and I need to help them with their homework. It was just something I always thought I needed to sort out.”

Completing the course has given (me) the confidence to consider teaching as a potential career, and it has equipped (me) with the skills to do this.

The professional observation feedback was great,.....made a point of recognising the positives within my observation, as well as looking at improvements to be made. I took away lots of points to develop and came out of the one-to-one feeling positive.

The AET programme has had a massive impact on my literacy skills and writing skills.

We all thoroughly enjoyed the course and will be recommending (it) to colleagues.

Observation feedbacks were constructive and helped me to improve my practice.

Approachable and supportive teachers.

What will it cost?Every course has a Fee Code (in the last column of the course listing) which determines how much the course will cost and whether or not fee discounts or FREE tuition are available.

Fee Code LThese courses receive government funding, and some learners will be eligible for FREE tuition if they meet specific criteria. Some ‘L’ code courses at Level 3 to 6 may also have an Advanced Learning Loan available for learners aged 19 and over. See below for more information about the criteria for free tuition and overleaf for Advanced Learning Loans.

WILL I HAVE TO PAY?Fee Code LIn general learners will have to pay the published fee, but you may be eligible for FREE tuition if you meet one of the criteria shown below.

FREE TUITION for ‘L’ fee code courses if:

• You are aged under 19 on 31st August 2018

• You are aged between 19 and 23 at the start of the course, studying an eligible first full Level 2 or 3 qualification

• You are aged between 19 and 23 at the start of the course, studying an Entry or Level 1 course (excluding basic skills) in order to progress to a full Level 2

• You are unemployed* and in receipt of Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) in the Work-Related Activity Group (WRAG)

• You receive Universal Credit because you are unemployed, and are in one of these groups - work-focused interview group, work preparation group, all work-related requirements group - to undertake skills training

• You are unemployed* and receiving any state benefits not listed above but want to enter employment and believe skills training will allow you to do so (at the College’s discretion)

• The course is maths or English, for those without a GCSE grade C / grade 4 or above.

These criteria exclude those aged 19+ wishing to study at Level 3 or above, for whom the Advanced Learning Loan may be available – see overleaf.

Please note that for any course coded L, if you believe you are entitled to FREE tuition, you will need to bring evidence with you when you enrol, such as an entitlement letter or award notice.

You will not be able to attend the course without payment or this evidence. It is your responsibility to notify the College of any change in your personal circumstances.

If you fall into one of the following categories, please seek further advice:

• Cash• Cheque (supported by a valid banker’s cheque card)• Credit/Debit Card (not American Express)• Direct Debit

All learners intending to pay their fees with an Advanced Learner Loan or HE loans but who are unable to provide evidence of either an approved loan or a loan application at the time of enrolment are required to complete a Direct Debit agreement. No collections will be made under any such agreements prior to December 2018 and only then if no evidence of a loan has been provided / is available. No deposit will be payable at the point of enrolment in respect of these categories of learners.

SUPPORT WITH YOUR STUDY COSTS

Payment PlansPayment is accepted in instalments for courses lasting at least one term (normally 12 weeks) and when the total fees total £100 or more. Note that instalments are a method of paying the fee which is due and thus all instalments must therefore be paid even if you leave the course early. Learners eligible to pay by instalments can split the fee as follows:

The first of the equal instalments on fees up to £499 must be paid at enrolment, the balance to be paid by Direct Debit. Payment plans of more than four instalments (including any deposit) may be arranged over the course duration. Failure to pay a Direct Debit will result in the whole of any outstanding fees becoming immediately payable.

Higher Education StudentsIn 2018-19, full-time and part-time Higher Education students are able to apply for tuition fee loans. Full-time students may also be eligible for a maintenance loan, depending upon circumstances.

For more information visit www.gov.uk/student-finance or call 01782 603604

Sponsored LearnersWhere payment of fees is to be made by an employer or sponsor, the College requires an official company purchase order confirming that the course fees will be paid upon invoice, providing an address to which the invoice should be sent. Invoices are payable within 21 days and the learner remains liable for the fees until payment is made by the employer or sponsor. A template for a purchase order (for small businesses who may not have an official purchase order system) can be found on the College website.

Fees remain payable in full irrespective of the period that the learner attends or remains employed by the company.

Refund of feesWhere a course fails to recruit sufficient learners to run, or is closed by the College all fees paid shall be refunded. If a satisfactory alternative has been found for the learner, the fees will not be refunded.

General refunds – either in full or in part - will otherwise only be made in exceptional circumstances e.g. incapacity.

Application for refunds should be addressed to the Head of Finance using the College’s ‘Refund Request’ form, which is available from the Admissions Team.

Should a learner decide to cancel their place on a course prior to its commencement, they should notify the College by writing to the Head of Finance. If this letter is received by the College prior to the course commencement date a full refund will be made, however an administration fee of £20 will be charged and deducted from the refund of fees paid.

The College reserves the right to refer any unpaid fees and additional costs incurred to our debt collection agent.

Financial SupportThe College has a range of financial support packages available for learners. If you are on low income you may be eligible for financial assistance towards the cost of your fees, equipment, childcare and/or other expenses whilst studying.
