Change Management and You w/ Laurel Benson
Most people have heard of Change Management, but can we really manage change?
The reality is that it isn’t the change we’re focused on, it’s the people going through the change that is the focus of change management. People are typically looking for leadership, support and direction when a change is introduced, however many leaders focus on the achievement of the project rather than the impact to the people. Learn what change management really looks like and gain experience with some of the tools and techniques change practitioners use to help organizations realize the business benefits of their projects and initiatives in this interactive session.
What you will learn: • The history of change management (OE, OD, etc)• The connection between change management and human resources • Various methodologies (Kotter, Prosci, Anderson Ackerman, Bridges ,etc)• What is change?• How people respond to change (personal and professional)• What does change management do?• Change management as part of projects/part of organizational transformations• Change management as a leadership competency

Making Difficult Conversations More Productive w/Maurice Fritze
As much as you’d like to avoid them, you can’t.
But, you can get more skilled at handling the challenging conversations you face - this training will show you how. Thankfully, you don’t have to be born with these skills ... they can be learned!
Sooner or later, each of us needs to have a conversation with someone that we will find difficult. Whether this difficult conversation involves saying “no” to your boss, giving constructive feedback to a co-worker, or conducting a performance review with a wayward direct report, such conversations are filled with stress and anxiety. During this highly interactive session, you will learn models, tools, and techniques for approaching your difficult conversations with confidence and composure. When emotions run high and there is a lot on the line, you want to be able guide your difficult conversations toward productive ends.
You will learn the concepts and skills required to overcome difficult tactics and effectively respond to emotions — your own and others’ — so that you can initiate and maintain productive conversations even in complex situations with challenging counterparts. Through intensive personal coaching, you will also gain valuable insight into your own personal challenges and leave with proven techniques for greater negotiation success.
The Art of Managing Risk w/ Michelle Luit
Oen as HR practitioners we recognize the need to remind client managers and employees of the need to be properly prepared – to have a plan that will help them achieve desired outcomes. Too oen, we as HR practitioners fail to follow our own advice! Today’s labour market presents many challenges that were not part of the historical equation when it comes to risk management. For example, consider how much effort goes into the following decisions: how best to manage social media in the workplace, determining whether to out-source HR functions to service providers in the marketplace, or evaluating whether zero tolerance is a sufficient corporate statement in managing the impact of workplace bullying on individuals, leadership, and company reputation.
There is a significant need to stop talking about planning; it is far more important to take time to put the plan in order and make a commitment to re-visit it oen. In our role of providers of advice and guidance, it does not bode well for Human Resources to be at a loss on how to proceed.

CHANGE MANAGEMENT
The current economic climate requires businesses to make many difficult decisions including initiating changes to the terms and conditions of employ-ment for its workforce. Not every change to employment terms results in a constructive dismissal, but the risk remains. How are employers to balance the need for change in order to keep a business a going concern on the one hand with the rights of employees and the potential for costly litigation on the other? In this session, attendees will examine permissible changes in the workplace and best practices to avoid constructive dismissal.

Investigating Bullying, Sexual Harassment & Violence in Union and Non-Union Work Environments w/ Shiloh NeveuFor many, this topic is considered the “soer side of safety” that should take a back-seat to more hard hitting issues. Unfortunately, the winds of change have arrived. With increased penalties and court rulings against employers, this issue is turning into a liability creeper. This presentation is a “how to” on investigating Bullying, Sexual Harassment and Violence in Union and Non-Union Work Environments. This presentation will walk participants through the most common investigative pit-falls and provide clear operational guidance on how to keep their organizations on the straight and narrow.
Danger & Opportunity: Bridging Cultural Diversity for Competitive Advantage w/ Lionel Laroche
When culturally different people work together in the same organization, they oen work side-by-side and they oen experience an "us-versus-them" situation. Immigrants and people born and raised in Canada on the one hand, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people on the other hand think, communicate and respond differently in the same situations, thereby creating many misunderstandings in the workplace. Using insightful diagrams and powerful anecdotes, this presentation examines the root causes of these challenges and suggests concrete actions that individual employees and the organization as a whole can take to improve the mutual working relationships between these groups.

Effectively Managing Change in a Boom & Bust Environment w/ Merri Lemmex
Change is inevitable. A post on the Manager Smarter website states that one in three employees cannot adapt to change. Eventually they might, but what can you do about it? Every organization experiences change – even more so with Alberta's economic climate and challenges with the effects of boom and bust in the oil patch. You need to empower your leadership team to deal effectively with change and create an environment that embraces the advan-tages change brings. Today’s challenge is influencing your leaders to deal with the day-to-day changes this economic cycle brings, and especially moving forward when the industry rebounds.

Managing the Unmanageable - The Art of Difficult Workplace Conversations w/ Russel Stratton

If these issues aren’t addressed proactively you run the risk of the situation getting worse, leading to reduced efficiency and effectiveness for the whole team.
During this highly practical hands-on session learn and practice a set of proven tools to help you achieve positive outcomes.

Redefining Talent Management Through Personal Accountability Based on The Mentor Mythw/ Debby Carreau
Based on The Mentor Myth, this interactive workshop will provide practical insights on how to rethink your approach to your own career and your organi-zations’ human capital. Most talent management programs are irrelevant to today’s business challenges. Budget cuts, shiing demographics, disruptive technologies and economic uncertainty have changed the playing field and what’s required of employees to thrive. Those organizations that have not shied their talent management strategy are at great economic risk. It is evident that a new normal in Alberta business is emerging and this session gives the participant a framework to drive personal accountability and become your own “talent agent”.

Sales Mastery: The Key To Increased Leadership Impact in Lean Times w/ Douglas Wagner & Vince Aliberti
The best ideas don’t win. The ideas that get implemented best win. Success-ful business leaders are adept at selling their ideas, proposals and plans. They can generate results even in tough, lean times. Most professionals spend very little time mastering this critical skill.
This session will build on the talents HR professionals already possess and give you the sales understanding and tools to create a bigger impact. You will learn how to understand the buyer’s mindset, uncover the hidden motivators, and communicate the value of your initiative to the decision makers so you can get from no to yes.

A Powerful Synergy - Human Capital and Sustainable Business Growth/Profitability w/Bruce Baker
Recent Canadian research (Patrice Rivard, October 2014) has shown a significant relationship between human capital and sustainable business growth/profitability. Additional ground-breaking research (James Fisher, 2006) has also shown a significant link between human capital and sustainable business growth success.
An important part of a Human Resource practitioner's success is having a keen understanding of the intricacies of what makes up the business operation they support. Part of this understanding is an appreciation of how "growth" impacts the business and what specific human capital requirements each stage of business growth requires. For the first time, the Human Resource Professional has a powerful model and analytical tools to make a direct connection and significant business case between sustainable organizational growth and human capital.
Developing Organizational Resilience Through Training The Mind w/ Dorota Ulkowska
If there was one thing you could change about yourself to increase your productivity and effectiveness at work – what would that one thing be?
Whatever your answer is to this question, the place to start is the mind. All our words and actions start as thoughts, either conscious or subconscious. If we want to change anything in our life, whether it is professional performance, social interactions, or lifestyle behaviors, we need to start with the mind.
Evidence-Based HR: Using it to Refocus, Reassess, and Resposition Your Organization w/Laura Croucher and Susanne DiCocco
In Alberta's current economic environment, HR professionals are increasingly faced with the need to make sound, rapid decisions. This coincides with a trend towards using prescriptive analytics and evidence-based HR to refocus the effectiveness of human capital across their organizations. As the focus on cost cutting persists, so will the opportunity for HR to demonstrate the value of workforce analytics. By empowering HR to quantitatively understand their business drivers and success metrics, workforce analytics are enabling the HR function to make critical workforce planning decisions using an evidence-based approach. {break} Attend this session to learn how organiza-tions such as Coca-Cola, SAS, Shell, and RBC are using evidence to bridge the gap between short-term operational and long-term strategic workforce issues, and open doors to new people strategies that impact their bottom lines.
Stressed for Success! Managing Stress in the Workplace w/ Susan Sawatzky
We intuitively recognize that stress has an impact on our workplaces, and in these uncertain times it can be difficult to manage. Understanding key factors in a work environment that contribute to workplace stress, and recognizing how to assess and control stress, can assist HR professionals in better managing stress in their organizations.
Yet work is only half the issue. Much of the stress we encounter comes from our everyday lives and from trying to achieve the work-life balance. ‘Stressed for Success’ is designed to provide HR professionals the tools and information they need to understand workplace stress and to empower their employees to build stress resiliency.

Essential Behaviors for Better Manager/Employee Conversations w/ Alan Fine
In best-in-class organizations, improving performance begins with the quality of conversations between managers and employees.
