What conditions will benefit from PRP?

PRP is used to help speed healing in many different types of surgical procedures, sports injuries and chronic conditions, such as osteo arthritis.

Specialist Sports Physicians and Orthopaedic Surgeons, are amongst specialist clinicians across a wide range of clinical disciplines who are using Angel® PRP to enhance the healing of injured or damaged tissue.

Advanced Biotechnology

The Cytomedix Angel® Whole Blood Separation System is intended to be used at the patient’s point-of-care for the safe and rapid preparation of concentrated platelet

rich plasma from a sample of the patient’s own blood. The system uniquely enables the operator to adjust the volume of PRP produced and regulate concentrations of platelets, white and red blood cells to provide a tailored treatment program for each patient.

Are all PRPs the same?

No, platelet concentrations can vary and their use for musculoskeletal injuries, and chronic conditions such as osteo arthritis are considered as “innovative tools for regenerative medicine”Reference: Zumstein, M.A. et al (2011) ‘The Future of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) in Sports Medicine’.

How does PRP work on tissue healing?

Studies indicate that when applied correctly, by skilled physicians, PRP can achieve:

» Rapid healing

» Reduce pain

» Decrease swelling and bruising

» Shorter recovery times

When we injure ourselves, platelets are one of the body’s first specialist repair cells to travel to the site of injury. Platelets contain a range of powerful Growth Factors. These Growth Factors help attract specialised tissue repair cells to promote normal healing.

Poor blood supply to tendons and ligaments restricts delivery of platelets to the injury. This may lead to an incomplete or delayed healing response. By administering your own concentrated PRP, rich in Growth Factors direct to the injury site, the speed of healing and recovery may be enhanced.

What are Growth Factors?

PRP contains highly concentrated platelets which release a complex cocktail of powerful Growth Factors. These Growth Factors have a broad range of activities and help to:

» Improve and accelerate injury healing

» Promote growth of the body’s cells and tissue

» Assist in the repair of tendons and ligaments

» Increase development of new blood vessels

How long does the process take?

The procedure takes approximately 45 minutes. A small amount of blood is taken and placed in the state-of-the-art Angel® Blood Processing System. The Angel® system processes your blood, concentrating and separating the platelets containing the growth factors, into a syringe. This PRP, rich in growth factors, is then injected into the injured area.

The treatment area maybe injected with a local anaesthetic agent, prior to the injection of PRP. Your physician may use ultrasound guided imaging to precisely inject the PRP into the site of injury.
