Howard Crawford – Director – Howard retired from St. Johnsbury Academy in 2012 completing a career that began at the Academy in 1969. Now living in Savannah, GA, Howard is the Director of the Middle School at the Hancock Day School. He has served as the Institute’s director since 1997 and retires as Director at the end of this summer. His goal as Institute director is to provide a professional learning experience for Institute participants.

Elaine Evans – Administrative Assistant – Elaine has been with the AP Institute since the beginning of the AP Institute in 1986. She has worked with three different directors during the 28 years that she has been working for the Institute. She retired from St. Johnsbury Academy in June 30th and will retire from the Institute at the end of this summer. Elaine has her Associates in Early Childhood Education, a Bachelors of Arts degree in Liberal Arts with a major in Psychology and Elementary Education, and a Minor in Biology. She is an avid quilter and loves gardening.

Steve Jolliffe - Steve Jolliffe is the English department chairman at St. Johnsbury Academy. He has taught both AP English Literature and Composition and AP Language and Composition for over 10 years in both public and independent settings. Additionally, Steve has served as an AP reader and written two AP test prep texts for Pearson publications. Steve has been appointed as Howard Crawford’s successor as Director of the AP Summer Institute and will be working closely with Howard this summer. Steve lives in Barnet, Vermont with his wife and three young children.

Marci McGinn – Administrative Assistant - Marci comes to the APSI this summer after working the past 8 summers as the Office Manager at Camp Walt Whitman in Piermont, NH, a children's summer camp with 600 campers and 200 staff. During the academic year she is the secretary for both the Fine Arts and the Mathematics departments, a position she began in 2011. Prior to 2011 she was employed by Thetford Academy in Thetford, VT for 12 years. Marci believes that if she does her job well, no one will know what she does, and everything will go smoothly.

Stacie Ruggles Beliveau - Business Office Executive Assistant - Stacie is a 1987 graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy and holds an Associate Degree in Business from Champlain College. She has worked at the Academy for the past 24 years. She lives in Lyndonville, VT with her three children and enjoys watching them participate in all their sporting events and dance and hip-hop classes. In her spare time, she enjoys kayaking and spending quality time with family and friends.

Joan Black – Administrative Assistant – Joan works in the AV/IT department during the school year. A native of Barnet, Vermont, she has been at the Academy for the past 13 years. She is an active hunter and in both a certified rifle and bow and arrow instructor. She enjoys numerous crafts and participating in the Eastern Star.

Kevin Garand – Jon Potter - IT Specialists – Kevin Garand-IT Specialist/Network Administrator-Kevin is a 1986 graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy, and has worked as a Network Administrator/IT Specialist for 14 years. Kevin recently was awarded his master’s degree in Computer Information Systems Management from the University of Phoenix. Jonathan graduated from Champlain College in Vermont. He has been a key member of the Academy’s IT department since 2012. He enjoys the challenge of the academic setting, especially integrating technologies in the school/enterprise environment.

Charles Hegarty – Jerry Prevost – Kelly Urie Activity Consultants - For the past 12 summers Charlie has coordinated the AP Institute’s afternoon programs. He is responsible for organizing theater trips, hikes, skeet shooting, and various boating activities. Charlie is an expert fisherman and is always looking for an opportunity to take people fishing! He is an avid chess player and can be found evenings looking for games. Jerry Prevost has been with the Institute for 5 years and leads various hikes and trips each afternoon. He teaches Culinary Arts/Hospitality during the school year. Kelly Urie joins the Institute staff this year and will be leading activities at the Field House in the afternoons. If you are looking for ways to meet people, work off a little of the Institute’s good food or simply looking for a little exercise, Kelly will be providing the activities to help you to it!

Patrick Lovett – Patrick will be assisting at the Institute supporting both our consultants and participants. He graduated from the Academy and June and will be pursue his post secondary education in the fall.

Hue Weatherbee is the executive chef who plans and directs the preparation of our meals. The Sodexo staff is prepared to meet individual dietary needs. Timothy Averill – English Literature – Tim has been a College Board consultant for 36 years. He served as a reader of the AP English Literature Examination and the National Teacher Examination from 1981 until 1998. He currently serves the College Board as an AP National Leader (evaluating and training AP consultants) and as Moderator of the AP Community Discussion Group, offering 7,200 AP English teachers the chance to share ideas, lesson plans, support, and concerns. Tim’s article, “Teaching Hamlet,” was featured in the College Board’s special topics publication used at all national AP English training in 2008. Tim has been recognized with the AP Teacher Recognition Award from the New England Regional office of the College Board, the Harvard Prize Book for Excellence in Teaching, and the MCTE’s Andre Favat and Sister Mary Anderson Awards for service to the teaching profession. In Tim’s other life, he is a member of the National Forensic League’s Hall of Fame and was named national debate coach of the year in 2005. After teaching for 35 years at Manchester Essex Regional High School, Tim now teaches at the Waring School in Beverly, MA, and enjoys his four grandchildren. Tim is very happy to be working with teachers at St. Johnsbury for the 28th year

Ted Graham – Biology – Ted was an AP Biology and AP Environmental Science teacher at Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, NJ until his retirement. “After retirement” he taught at the American College of Sofia, Bulgaria (Biology and Chemistry) and continues his work as an AP Biology Consultant (25 years!). He is a reader for both the AP Biology and Environmental Science Exams. He has worked extensively helping the College Board train teachers to implement the new curriculum. He has many different publications for the US Bureau of Mines related to water jet mining of coal and surface mining of coal. Ted was the recipient of the Advanced Placement Biology Award from the Middle Region College Board. Ted has been with the Academy Summer Institute for 19 years. We are happy to have him back after a short break!

Dave Bock – Statistics – Dave was a mathematics teacher at Ithaca High School for 35 years and has taught statistics at HIS, Tomkins-Cortland Community College, Ithaca College and Cornell University. He won numerous teaching awards including the MAA’s Edyth May Sliffe Award for Distinguished High School Mathematics Teaching (twice), Cornell University’s Outstanding Educator Award (three times), and has been a finalist for New York State Teacher of the Year.

Dave holds degrees from the University at Albany in Mathematics (B.A.) and Statistics Education (M.S.). He is a co-author of the AP Statistics textbook Stats: Modeling the World, an non-AP text, Stats In Your World, three college statistics texts, the high school text Precalculus: Graphical, Numerical, Algebraic, and the Barron’s Review book, How to Prepare fo the AP Calculus Examination. Dave has been a reader for the AP Calculus and AP Statistics examinations and serves as a statistics consultant for both the College Board and the National Math-Science Initiative. He has lead numerous workshops and summer institutes for AP Statistics teachers and made frequent presentations at state, regional and national conferences.

John Schutter – Physics and Physics Labs – John teaches as an adjunct instructor at Lakeland Community College in Mentor, OH since he retired from Shaker Heights HS after teaching there for 32 years. He has been reading AP Physics tests since 1990 and has served ETS in a number of ways. He has been a College Board Consultant since 1993, doing one and two-day workshops in a number of different regions. During the summer he has done week long workshops in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Massachusetts in addition to the ones here at St. Johnsbury. For ETS he is now writing questions for the new Physics I and II AP tests. With College Board he has served as an AP Central Physics Resource Reviewer, physics writer on the original AP Vertical Science Team, and the AP Physics Audit Committee. He is a member of the American Association of Physics Teachers (Board member and Past-President of the Ohio Section). He is a recipient of the William Holdings Jenning Outstanding Teacher Award.

Peter Durnan – English Language – Peter has taught at Holderness School in Holderness, NH for 12 years. Before that, he taught at St. George’s in Newport, RI and Cate School in CA, where he was English Department Chair. Peter has been a reader for the English Language Exam for 12 years and a consultant for the College Board for 11 years. His current position at Holderness is Academic Dean.. He has taken part in the New Hampshire’s inaugural session of the National Writing Program Seminar for Teachers sponsored by the National Endowment of Humanities. Peter is an avid road and mountain biker and will be riding most afternoons after class. Join him!

Patricia Thomas Smith – Spanish - Patricia Smith has been teaching Spanish since 1970, and has taught all levels. She studied Spanish in Argentina and in Madrid, Spain. Originally from Syracuse, NY, she has a BA in Spanish and French from St. Lawrence University, a Masters in Education from Bridgewater State College, and an MA in Spanish from Middlebury College. Most of her career was in the public schools of Braintree, Massachusetts, where she taught a variety of Spanish classes, but particularly AP Language, from 1987 until 2002, when she retired. She missed the classroom, so after one semester of leisure, she began teaching at the college level, at Suffolk University and at Tufts University. She has taught at these two colleges continuously since 2003. Patti became involved with the AP Reading in 1989, and has been a reader almost every year since then. She has read literature, language essays, and listened to tapes and CDs. Much of her expertise comes from experience and knowledge gleaned from the AP Readings. She became an AP Consultant in 2001, and has conducted workshops at St. Johnsbury since 2005. She has also lead workshops in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, Rhode Island, and Florida.

Michael (Mike) Schaab – Chemistry - is an associate professor in the Arts and Sciences Department at Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, Maine, where he teaches courses in physics, chemistry, environmental studies, and ethics. He has taught high school science for 28 years and for the last 12 years at the college level. As a College Board consultant, AP Reader, and AP Mentor for the State of Maine, he has developed and conducted numerous AP Chemistry and AP Biology workshops and Summer Institutes during the last nine years. He has twice received the Distinguished Teacher Award from Bowdoin College, the Educator of the Year Award from Rotary International, the Sustained Excellence in Teaching Science Award from the University of Maine at Orono, and is a Paul Harris Fellow. Mike has reviewed numerous scientific books and texts for library journals and AAAS. He wrote the AP teacher resource manual to accompany the 11th edition of Chemistry by Raymond Chang. He recently prepared and edited exams for McGraw-Hill’s AP Chemistry practice exams using the new curriculum standards and edited three chapters for Pearson’s AP Active Reading Guide and AP Test Prep Chemistry: A Molecular Approach AP* Chemistry Edition by Nivaldo Tro. His primary focus of educational interest and research is in the area of experimental design and learning. Mike enjoys hiking, gardening, kayaking, choral singing and teaching students of all ages.

Joann Winkler – Studio Art - A native of Illinois, Joann Winkler is a graduate of Northern Illinois University (BS in Ed), and Northeast Missouri State University (MA), with continued studies at the following: Carleton College, Colorado Institute of Art, Drake University, Maryland Institute of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, Salzburg College, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. A visual arts teacher at Clinton High School in Clinton, Iowa, Joann has taught AP Studio Art for over fifteen years, as well as Introduction to 2D, Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, and Sculpture classes. She has served as a College Board Reader for AP Studio Art for the past seven years, and as a Table Leader during the 2004 and 2006 reading. Over the last six years, Joann has been a frequent presenter of one-day AP* Studio Art Workshops for the College Board* and 5-day summer institutes throughout the country including Columbia College’s National AP* Summer Institute for the Arts (2004 & 2005). Joann has presented one-day Studio Art Workshops at AP* National Conferences (Chicago, Los Angeles) as well as sessions on AP* Studio Art at the National Art Education Association Convention (Denver, Chicago, Boston, New York). Additionally, she contributed to apcentral.collegeboard.com and written lessons including student work for The AP Vertical Teams Guide for Studio Art, and AP Studio Art Special Focus: Breadth in the AP Portfolios.

Tracey Wilson – US History – Tracey is a teacher of Advanced Placement US History and US History at Conard HS I Connecticut. She is a reader and a consultant for the College Board. Tracey helped develop the new AP US History course consultant training and trained the national consultants. She helped develop and pilot the new Historical Thinking Skills workshop for the new course to start in 2014-5. She has taught summer curriculum workshops for teachers using primary Sources from Connecticut to teach us U.S. History Curriculum. She developed the first College Board Social Studies Vertical Teams workbook, and wrote the Pre-AP Workshop using Soapstone to teach writing. In 2009, she won the Gilder Lehrman History Teacher of the Year for Connecticut. In that same year, she won the Olmsted Prize for Excellence in Secondary School Teaching from Williams College. She won the New England Advanced Placement Experienced Teacher Award from the College Board. She serves as West Hartford’s Town History. Tracey earned her PhD from Brown University in 1993.

Lori Hodin – Psychology - Lori is presently teaching and serving as the Coordinator of the Safe School Initiatives at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School in Sudbury, MA. Over the past 20 years, she has taught courses in AP Psychology, Psychology, and Modern European History. Lori has been an AP Psychology consultant for the College Board for 13 years. She has led week-long summer programs at Fitchburg State college, Fitchburg, MA and at the Advanced Placement Institute in Belleview, WA. She has led numerous workshops for AP Psychology teachers for the New England Regional College Board. In addition, she has led workshops for experienced Psychology teachers at the AP Annual Conference. Lori was an AP reader for the 2006 AP Psychology exam. Lori served as the Regional Coordinator for Teachers of Psychology in the Secondary Schools(TOPSS). Lori has received the following honors: She was selected as Swampscott Public School Teacher of the Year (2002) and as Semi-finalist Massachusetts Teacher of the Year (2001) She was also selected as one of “Christa’s Teachers” and placed on the Christa McAuliffe Honor Roll at Framingham State College. Lori is a member of the Psi Chi, the National Honor Society for Psychology.

Eliel Gonzalez – Calculus AB - Eliel Gonzalez is entering his 24th year as a mathematics educator in the East Longmeadow (Massachusetts) Public Schools. His College Board schedule at East Longmeadow High School includes AP Calculus, Pre-Calculus and SAT Math. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics from Purdue University as well as a Master in Education Degree from the University of Massachusetts. He has been a MathCounts and/or HS Math League every year of his career. In addition to his full-time teaching, Eliel has served the College Board as K-12 Professional Development Project Manager in Mathematics, AP Annual Conference Steering Committee Member, and National Leader. As an endorsed College Board consultant, Eliel has conducted numerous AP Calculus, Pre-AP Math and SAT workshops and summer institutes as well as trained new math consultants. When not working in the math education field, Eliel enjoys traveling, working out, going to beach, spending quality time with his friends, dining out, and following Purdue sports.

Karen Waples – U.S. Government - Karen Waples has taught since 1989 and is a Social Studies teacher at Cherry Creek High School, near Denver, Colorado. She has taught three AP classes: U.S. Government and Politics, Comparative Government, and U.S. History. Ms. Waples has scored AP U.S. Government and U.S. History exams and is a question leader for the AP Comparative Government exam. She is a co-author of several “Fast Track to a Five,” study guides for AP US Government. Ms. Waples is the Chair of the College Board Social Science Advisory Committee. As a College Board endorsed consultant, she conducts worksops throughout the country. She has an undergraduate degree from the University of Denver and a law degree from the University of Colorado.
