Creatine is a naturally occurring amino acid that is found in the body whose main function is to increase muscle energy levels. Although creatine is present in most all cell types to varying degrees, the greater part of the body’s entire creatine re-serve (95%) is found within the skeletal muscle. The remainder (~5%) is principally found within tissues with extremely high energy expenditures such as the heart and brain.

For many years, athletes and gym users have used creatine supplements to maximize muscle energy. The cells of our body store their energy in the form of a molecule known as Adenosine TriPhohsphate, or ATP. The amount of work our muscles can per-form is directly associated with the amount of ATP that is stored as well as the ease with which ATP is regenerated. Creatine works to increase the avail-ability of ATP, which is the cell’s energy molecule.

Creatine achieves this by continually renewing the ATP molecule. When ATP (adenosine triphosphate) loses one of its phosphate molecules and becomes ADP (adenosine diphosphate), it must be convert-ed back to ATP in order for the molecule to be able to produce energy again. The creatine in our body is mostly stored as creatine phosphate (known as phosphocreatine), and it will donate its phosphate to the ADP which renews the ATP molecule and it can now produce energy.
