  • Introduction

Indian steel industry has been rapidly growing with expansion and modernization of

steel making facilities to cope up with the increasing domestic as well as global demand.

At the same time, steel makers have faced serious challenges of stringent quality

requirements of the market compelling them to develop smart refractory materials and

suitable refining technologies. At present, expectation of the market has been

increasing with the demand of quality steel, in cleanliness level with respect to impurity

and gas content less than 30 ppm, particularly in some grades for critical applications.

The role of refractory and secondary refining becomes vital for this purpose. Thus, it

becomes the need of the hour to keep abreast with latest innovations and

developments in various fields like raw materials for refractories, new generation

refractories, functional refractories, monolithics, nanotech refractories, pretreatment of

hot metal, converter steel making, secondary refining, continuous casting, inclusion

engineering, process modeling/simulation and special steel making.

In view of the above, R&D Centre for Iron and Steel (RDCIS), the corporate research

unit of Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL), in association with Centre for Engineering &

Technology (CET), SAIL and MECON Limited is organising an International Conference

on Advances in Refractories and Clean Steel Making (ARCS13) during June 26 to 28,

2013 at Ispat Bhawan, Ranchi, Jharkhand, India. The Conference is organised under the

aegis of Indian Ceramic Society, Subarnarekha Chapter, Ranchi in association with

Indian Institute of Metals, Ranchi Chapter with the theme Challenges & Opportunities

in Refractories and Clean Steel Making. It is planned to discuss more than 100

technical papers from all around the world on different topics related to refractory and

steel making. Eminent technologists are invited from different corners of the globe to

share their valuable experiences in the above diverse fields. The Conference will

provide unique opportunity for technical and business discussions to the technology

providers, equipment suppliers, steel makers, researchers, academicians, consultants,

refractory suppliers, flux manufacturers, managers, students, and others. Details of the

Conference is also available at the Conference website www.arcs13.com

ARCS13 is being organised by R&D Centre for Iron and Steel (RDCIS) in its pristine

premises at Ranchi. RDCIS is the corporate R&D Centre of Steel Authority of India

Ltd. (SAIL), the largest steel producer in India. It employs more than 250 scientists and

engineers and is a premier research organisation in the field of ferrous metallurgy.

The Centre is equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic and testing facilities as well

  • as with pilot scale laboratories. The major efforts of RDCIS are directed towards process

innovations, product development, cost reduction, quality improvement in different

SAIL plants. The Centre pursues a number of collaborative research programmes with

leading institutions in India and abroad. RDCIS also offers consultancy, specialised

testing services, contract research and training assistance to various external

    organisations.

RDCIS has a dedicated group of Refractory and Steel Technologists who are undertaking

valuable research projects for improving refractory lining, primary steel making,

secondary refining and continuous casting. Scientific research is carried out in various

areas of refractory and steel making such as raw materials for refractory, BOF and ladle

lining life improvement, refractories for tundish, desulphurisation, dephosphorisation,

deoxidation, nitrogen control, inclusion engineering, special steel making, tundish

metallurgy and casting. A dedicated laboratory, which is equipped with a state of the art

experimental heat making furnaces, is used for developing new steel products and for

    optimisation of steel making parameters.

ARCS13 will be dealing with various innovations in Refractory and Steel Making

Technology for enhancing the performance of Steel Industries. In addition to this,

deliberations will be made on some other topics of fundamental nature and of

general interest. Some of the broad areas to be covered in technical sessions are:
