Page 13: Advancing action on nature through business platforms...Agenda. 5. 1. Welcome and introduction. with Nadine McCormick, IUCN’s Business and Biodiversity Programme. 2. Presentation

Why are business platforms important? Why are they useful?

• “Safe space” for business sector and conservation sector to exchange on sustainability issues

• Particularly important in countries where the PS has low awareness around biodiversity issues

• Opportunity for both sectors to come together to develop and implement projects, knowledge products, tools, etc.

• Useful to encourage companies to challenge and motivate one another

THE WHY

Why the Network?

31

The Why for your Business

• Business both depends and impacts on biodiversity• Biodiversity supplies clean water and air among many other ecosystem services• Companies use many resources derived from biodiversity• Biodiversity is threatened globally and in South Africa• Business is key driver of biodiversity loss• There is an international call for business to help stop biodiversity loss• There is a relatively comprehensive biodiversity policy and legislative

framework in South Africa

Building a business case for biodiversity should be a priority for your company, with a holistic view spanning governance, risk, compliance, financial, and stakeholder engagement perspectives.

• Add your voice to the business engagement to act as a positive force for the conservation of biodiversity

• Learn from peers and influence thinking in the biodiversity space• Be seen as a leading business in the support of biodiversity mainstreaming
